I'm trying to remember the name of a movie about a rock band (garage band) looking for a good manager. Then a guy with reputation that looked like Sam Neil (pretty sure it wasn't him) came in and made them tour (in a van etc). At the end the guy disappears.

I think a good answer to your question might go into the cultural divide and language barrier between the East and the West as an explanation why Western critics, by and large, aren't interested in anime. It might also touch upon the fact that anime only really became easily consumable over here since the invention of the Internet and fan subs, meaning that a lot of people won't have had all that much exposure to it.

Throw in the idea that Western animation skews younger (which gives off the notion that all animation skews younger), and you might have a decent answer.

(It's a more personal story, though, and less of a historic war depiction.)
