@ChristianRau - you will have to remind me a little bit about the comments - like which question/answer it was, as I don't remember. I recall declining obsolete flags, because I read them and decided that they might be important for people understanding the flow of how the answer arrived at where it was.
If you remind me of the comments - or reflag them, I'll take another look.

@iandotkelly Yeah, nevermind, was on one of those Interstellar questions.

Q: Need the name of an old film

Steven BradfordAll I can remember is there is 2 brothers, kids, maybe a few friends. They are jumping in to a lake/river and the younger brother is afraid to jump. His older brother persuaded him to jump but just as he jumps a log/tree trunk floats under the bridge and the boy lands on it on his neck and become...

@ChristianRau Wait, it already came out in Europe?

Q: A woman comes out of a mirror and kills a man in jail

TigranI think this was at the end of the movie. A woman is seen running from a man in the woods. Above them is a helicopter. The woman runs until she sees a body of water. She jumps in and sees a little girl in the water with her. They both smile. The next scene shows a man in jail. There is a mirror i...

Q: Asian film where man finds corpse in apartment, runs to the country, sex drugs and nothing ensue

user18695I think I saw it in 2004-5 and that it was made in the late 90s or early oughts and I think it was Korean--maybe. The man is a young depressed office worker living in the city and comes home to find a man dead in his apt and he realizes he needs to leave. I remember there was blood and he was fre...

@MattD It came out everywhere. Are you saying it didn't come out in the US yet?

I have a doubt, couple of weeks ago, I was able to edit questions or answers of new users and the changes are reflected right away, but recently, it says that my edit needs to be peer-reviewed. You guys have any idea about this change?
@chaitanya89 privileges in graduate site are different then beta sites
You might lost that privileges after movies and TV got graduated
Ahhhh, your answer completely makes sense. Thanks.
Got it, rep moved up to 2000 to get the changes applied immediately.
yup
Even i have lost trusted user privileges.
11:19
sorry about that.
But this can be earned back with time
@chaitanya89 not a big deal trusted user privileges are rarely used ones.
okay. Just saw the conversations about Jupiter Ascending. I'm kinda upset that Andy and Lana aren't doing good anymore. Those guys are full of talent.
I was also interested in that film
But reviews are too bad
I don't know why i feel this but TV series in Hollywood this days are becoming good and strong but movies are more bounces.
yes, So, I'll save my movie money to Furious 7. Really looking forward to it. But there's a lot of negativity on this movie on youtube.
Left that long before....last one for me was Tokyo drift. The earlier watch i can think of is terminator
Oops missed Avenger
11:28
yes, Avengers will be another movie that I'll save money to watch it in theaters.
So where you from?

Q: Did Archer cause the elevator to break?

DustinDavisIn Archer S06E05, "Vision Quest", did Archer cause the elevator to break? I didn't quite understand what happened. @ChristianRau Nope, comes out in US theaters today.
@ChristianRau - so much comes out later in the USA than Europe now .... a complete change from when I lived in the UK and had to wait for stuff to come across from the USA >:(
@iandotkelly I know, it's so weird, right? Actually, that may be a good question to ask on the site....
@MattD - Yeah - I'd quite like to know a definitive answer to that. They do it to build a momentum behind a movie - but why the direction has changed I don't know. I wonder if it relates to different distribution technology - digital vs film.
@iandotkelly The only ones I've noticed lately that can kind of make sense are the ones with primarily foreign actors, even if they're playing characters that are definitively American. But there has to be more to it than that, right?
I would think it would have to be more than that. It would be a good question.
14:50
Yeah, I'm compiling examples now.
@MattD Yeah, I didn't consider it on that granularity, +-1 day so to say. That's largely due to cultural differences, I guess. Here new movies are usually released on Thursdays, I guess in the US it's Fridays (or are you more flexible over there?).
Then again other things we only get later. I think this especially applies to the current period of time, often we get stuff from the US autumn in January/February (e.g. John Wick, Fury). Much of the (supposedly) good Oscar stuff is currently running here or not yet released (e.g. Birdman, those Turing and Hawking flicks, American Sniper), while in the US this seems to be a time of qualitative shortness.
There are some movies that have been released in other countries nearly a month before they hit the US, though.
I even was as far as asking if there's a particular pattern in releasing US autumn stuff at the German (or European?) start of the year. But I'll need a bit more examples to actually back such a question with substance.
@ChristianRau - Interesting ... I wonder if weather has something to do with that particular part of the pattern, January & February are particularly cold and snowy for a big part of the north and east of the US.
Much colder and snowier than much of northern Europe
The other thing I'm finding are that all of my examples seem to be comic book or toy franchises.
15:05
I think that digital distribution has freed them of many physical constraints of duplicating and distribution - so I think the current patterns are indicative of marketing and maximizing profit.
Yeah, there's lots of possible answers, but I'm wanting to see what someone comes up with, or if there's another reason that maybe none of us is aware of or thinking of.
Nearly done compiling my list and writing the question.
@MattD Hmm, I'd be interested to see what actual question you come up with, cause I guess this can very easily become quite broad and unanswerable.
Oh, and right while we're talking about distribution a question about The Guest gets reactivated. I wonder when (or if) that ever comes here, wanna see that so much.
So this could end up being some kind of list question, but more along the lines of others I've answered such as, "Why wasn't Cold Hands in the latest season of Game of Thrones?" and that other one about why the story for The Walking Dead TV show is different from the comic books. It's a list, but a list of reasons.
@ChristianRau Maybe they're even waiting with the release for Oscar nominations/wins for increased marketing effect (at least on the movies where a nomination/win is highly anticipatable).
@MattD Hmm, those examples don't sound to me like list questions the slightest, anyway.
Well, they involve making a list of reasons, but yeah, not really a list, but kind of like a list.
I'm about to post it.
15:17
Well, every question involves making a list of answers if you really see it that way.
Posted.
Yet wehn thinking about this, I have a gut feeling we already had such a question before.
I didn't see anything overt in the suggestions the ask template brought up
Stuff about titles in foreign countries, but nothing specific about why movies seem to be released in foreign markets before US markets
However, if there's a duplicate the system missed, mark it as such and I'll close my question.
Though, Jupiter Ascending is an amazingly bad example to start with, since that is really a movie that is released exactly at the same time nearly everywhere. Those +-1 days are as said simply cultural noise.
Right, but there are other movies that released in European countries several weeks to nearly a month before they hit US theaters.
Jupiter Ascending was just the movie that got the ball rolling on the question for the site.

Q: Why are more American movies are coming out in foreign countries first?

MattDWhile chatting about the movie Jupiter Ascending in the chat room, I learned that the movie is apparently already out in many European countries, whereas the movie comes out today, 6 February 2015, in the United States. Over the last several years I've noticed that this trend seems to be increasi...

@MattD Sure, but still. ;-)
Eh, I'm gonna leave it up to the community to decide. We were bitching about the lack of good questions and the inundation of ID, so I'm just doing my part to try and make things better. :D
Many of your examples seem quite below a week anyway, which I'd regard highly insignificant. But this may be just me and the question is concerned about a much finer granularity.
Yeah, I may look for some larger examples, but even still, a 10 to 20 years ago those movies would have likely hit the US weeks or even months ahead of any other territory, so it's still interesting that the gap seems a lot smaller.
@MattD Sure, definitely, maybe I have just expected something else from the question's title and wording.
15:29
Feel free to suggest edits or ways to make it better. I'm not so egotistic as to feel I'm above reproach in not asking good questions here.
@MattD Meh, it's generally fine I guess. Anything else requires far more thorough assessment.
Awww damn, I guess we did have this before. movies.stackexchange.com/questions/2172/…
Even funnier is @iandotkelly provided an answer. :P
Well, in that case I'm afraid it's a pretty exact duplicate.
Yep. Closing it as a duplicate now, or should I just delete it entirely?
@MattD Meh, don't know, for the sake of New-To-IT and his not so bad answer, close-voting might be enough (and might even be followed by merging his answer into the other question).
15:40
Right, and I know about the whole, "Dupe questions can act as a sign-post to the correct answer," and all that. So yeah, I'll vote to close as it's a dupe.
Well this has been a lovely waste of my morning. :P
Well, blame it on iandotkelly and his awful memory. ;-)
Yeah, thank's a lot, @iandotkelly. :P
Oh wait, we have an academy-awards tag now? While retagging that single question should be easy, the cleaner variant would probably be to make the existing oscar tag a synonym of that, as the new one seems quite more formal (i.e. better). Well, back to the awfully non-functioning synonym voting system.
@ChristianRau Ha. Well it was nearly 3 years ago
I would say that things have changed in that 3 years - its more likely now that (some) movies open later in the US
@MattD @MattD - oops - sorry, but it was 3 years. I can't remember every answer I've given.
@iandotkelly Oh, I probably can (but Ok, I guess you also have a non-movies.se life, apparently)! ;-)
15:57
I'm also probably older than you. :)
@iandotkelly Oh, "Its not ideal, and the user has done worse recently, but this example was at least posted a day apart when no answers received on first one." - Still the proper approach in this case seems to be migration rather than cross-posting. Hmm, but I see it's not that easy/clear to decide:

Q: Is deliberate cross posting allowed?

Q: A man rescues a woman from a man with a nail gun

TigranI think this was at the end of the movie. A man enters what seems to be a warehouse. He sees a woman bound to a chair and tries to rescue her. The man with the nail gun appears and tries to kill them but they escape. I think the word "rainbow" was in the title, but I'm not sure.

Q: Why did Matt Damon opt out of the Bourne Legacy?

Tyler DurdenWhy did Matt Damon opt out of the Bourne Legacy? I read on the Wikipedia that he decided not to make himself available for playing the lead role in the fourth film of the series. Is there any indication why not?

19:05
So hey, pretty sure it's a mod that has to do it, but can we change the tagline for the chatroom from the Edge of Tomorrow refference to something more in line with the fact we've graduated? I'm thinking the tagline from the poster for The Graudate: "This is Benjamin. He's a little worried about his future." Or something along those lines. Just feels like it could use a change.
@MattD any room owner can do it but fortunately/unfortunately our room owner are all of our three pro temp mods. :D
19:39
Here are some first tries, gonna post some of them when I tried a little more:
I like the top one best of those two.
@MattD Yeah, that white background in the 2nd is a bit annoying. The bad thing is, you can't put just that icon onto the light brown background, as then you don't see the popcorn anymore, so either a white background or some kind of spot.
