Q: Who was the ultimate originator of the conspiracy the steal the painting in Trance?

matt_blackThe Danny Boyle movie Trance is riddled with false memory and flashbacks. Enough to leave it unclear, even at the end, who first decided to steal the painting at the heart of the theft that kicks off the movie. Every version, even the one I think the movie wants us to believe, seems to have hol...

Hello
Anyone going to start?
@iandotkelly I see that Tom is already over "repairing" the current "site problems". But before I join in I wanted to ask if there is any easier mod-tool for such large scale edits/undos (since I guess we all agree that the state of the respective questions 1 hour ago is preferable)?
There is no tool for mass rollbacks
And yes the state 1 hour ago is preferable
I was funnelled into an anime.se chatroom when I created one.
18:31
Interesting, but you found us
@coleopterist I see you still have enough rep to chat. ;-)
I was trying to create a separate room instead of polluting "the screening room"
@ChristianRau :P
Ok - good idea
So anyhow
@coleopterist There isn't really happening much here to be polluted anyway. And I guess this incident has taken a scale that should interest anyone actively involved in the site, anyway.
Tom
Tom
18:34
@ChristianRau yeah, got the ones with titles (or other edits) that where definitely better than they were before. Wasn't sure how we were going to handle it, so figured I shouldn't just rollback everything
Hello Tom.
Tom
Tom
what's up
So, here I am.
Well I'm glad we're here to talk
My main issue with this is that I have done absolutely nothing wrong. Procedurally.
I enforced what I believed was site policy/guidelines.
18:35
@Tom Yeah, in some cases it's really not necessary to edit it (hehe). But there have been more severe things like spoilers, non-understandable ID-questions and tag changes, which definitely need to be repaired.
Optional decided that he didn't like it for whatever reason and rolled back my change.
This was without leaving a comment telling me why.
Well, for the record I am broadly in support of keeping tagged information out of titles, but that we shouldn't be dogmatic about this
2
I rolled back his change. I left a comment stating why and pointed him to the meta post. Granted that that was my meta post.
He rolled back yet again (no comment) and I informed him that this was site policy (IIRC) and asked him to take matters to meta if he did not like it.
Tom
Tom
@coleopterist well, that's thing. You haven't... up until the rollback war and continuing the unneccessarily heated discussion with JSO. So there's no need to stop editing posts just because of this incident.
Exactly
18:38
He did not take things to meta. Instead he simply rolled back again and I informed him that I would happily roll back all his changes as this was policy and that he should take it to meta.
The policy in this area is not clear cut - its a guideline - tagged information in titles is not necessarily degrading the content of the question
The fact that JSO did not take matters to meta is what should be at question. The fact that he did so even after me explaining matters to him is what should be at question.
@iandotkelly Sure. But what was his reason for including the tag in the title?
Why does he need a reason
If the reason of "adding intrigue" to the title is an acceptable one, then every user will want to add intrigue to theirs.
Tom
Tom
Well, you could have easily made a meta post about it, too. Just saying... You're both equally guilty of the rollback war
2
18:41
Yes, and I tried to address things equally - quoting both of your text where I felt you had overstepped the line into personal abuse
@Tom Sure I could have. But there already is a meta post for that very reason. The one that I linked him to. He could simply have added an answer saying why he disagreed with the policy and why there ought to be exceptions.
I did not single you out
What I did do - was settle on JSO's edit as the one we would leave
@iandotkelly based on what reasoning? That it was short?
When does a title turn from short to long? When does a title turn from bland to intriguing?
I had to choose one. And in my opinion in the case where it is not violating clear policy of the site - the OP has some natural precidence over another editor
I don't care about intruige
That was JSO's point
My point - there is a dispute - JSO is the author, his edit seems acceptable
I couldn't care less about his reason for preferring it.
Reason 2: Stackexchange functions based on the currency of reputation and badges. If I had a question about the Dark Knight and included the tag in my question's title, then it would a) be more visible to other users and b) be better ranked in search engines. More visits = more answers and more badges / rep. Whether this really matters is purely a matter of opinion.
18:47
Ok - i'll revise that last statement :-)
I re-read it
I honestly couldn't care less about that reason either
In other words, all users would prefer to have tags in their titles. I would want my question title to read "What was the point of the wolf scene in Fantastic Mr. Fox?" rather than "What was the point of the wolf scene?"
No
Why does JSO's preference to one question of his get automatically applied to all users?
2
In general I think you are correct - titles being shorter not duplicating tag information is a good thing
No, this is about the policy of not having tags in titles. By allowing exceptions for JSO, this affects all others users whose questions have been edited (most often by yours truly) to remove tags.
(Hence my rollbacks today*.)
I politely disagree
To put it in another way, I will want to have film titles in all my question titles. I like shiny badges and want all the attention that I can get.
18:52
If you read my earlier comments on meta about this - I don't think we need to be dogmatic and remove them in all cases
2
Yes, and as in my meta post about the policy, if it is unavoidable for a valid reason, then it is fine.
You don't make the policy any more than I do ..... this is your preference, and until yesterday your edits were not commented on
3
The reasons for the use of the title in JSO's case are laughable. You might not care about it. But I do.
It's irrelevant that nobody has complained. Perhaps they did not complain because they believed that it was site policy.
I don't think many more than 10 people worry about site policy
I am probably being pedantic here. But my edits were made in good faith. This is no longer the case.
18:55
@coleopterist And perhaps nobody complained about all my edits as they also thought they had no right to complain. Possible? Perhaps. Valid reason to undo all my edits? I don't think so.
Tom
Tom
@coleopterist I think the current rule/guideline is that it's preferred not to have tags in titles, but there's nothing saying that you can't. If someone doesn't like the title being edited, too me, the original version (as long as it's not against the rules) takes precedence over the edited version.
I had no doubt that you were being in good faith
@ChristianRau Sure. But as I said, IMO that having the tag in the title actually does improve your chances at better rep/badges. Most people might not care. But I've edited everybody's questions.
As you have noted in the past, I've even edited closed questions :S
Tom
Tom
but it doesn't mean that you shouldn't edit the titles in the first place, the preferred way is always the preferred way. But if people argue about an edit, if it's not against the rules, then I think the original version should be the final one.
2
@Tom - completely agree
19:00
@Tom Sure. But if a person is applying policy to a question and the OP disagrees with it, it should be up to the OP to go to meta and reason things out.
Personally, I prefer to avoid entering any comment below a question that is not about the content. When disputes arise, I always tell people to take things to meta where stuff can be reasoned out and the community can act on matters together.
That would be ideal - yes - but neither can we force them to do so, so comments are the only way.
This is what I did here. The fact that JSO didn't bother to do it is entirely his issue. Quoting him "but I never saw this as needing to come to Meta in the first place, I thought it wasn't in any way a big deal," <--- even after I requested him to do so.
So you did the right thing.
Furthermore, I would have also liked to have seen confirmation from the mods and other users that this whole tags in titles policy is not seemingly my policy as JSO has repeated claimed or that I am unilaterally enforcing it.
Yes, I did the right thing. He did the wrong thing. I might have done too much of the right thing. But it was nevertheless the right thing.
You entered into a rollback war for which the only outcome was one or other edit to be adjudicated as acceptable. The reasons I chose JSO's has been already stated
As for the policy - you correctly pointed him at meta
It is true however that you are applying your interpretation of a meta discussion - in a different way to how I interpret it
19:07
I disagree with any policy that it's fine to allow tags in titles based on the OP's whimsy. There are surely exceptions. But they have to be reasoned exceptions. Yes, this might be a minor issue in the grand scheme of things.
Its ok to disagree - but there you go
At the end of the day this is a community of people asking and answering questions about movies and tv
If one original author has a strong opinion about a title .... and its not against policy - then I don't see the problem with leaving it
You may see it as 'whimsy' - but my interpretation is that this is 'preferred' as @Tom stated above, not black and white.
shrug then we come back to the point of what is "policy". If the policy is to not have tags in titles except in cases where the OP insists on it, then that is fine. (It is also silly.)
@ian
er
You are certainly welcome to your opinion, but we also have to remember that we should be welcoming to people - and some people find edits to be disagreeable
We're not curating a museum or library here
sigh and here we are again. If people find edits to be disagreeable, then they should go to meta. If they don't, then it's entirely their fault.
Well I'm sorry - but that is how I feel
One day ..... don't know when ... when we graduate to a full site, you can stand as a moderator :-)
19:15
@iandotkelly Yes, you seem to be fine with a system that is held together by worn out shoe strings. I am not. I like things to be organised and compartmentalised. You will also find that most people consider SE to actually be a library.
I actually like things fairly organized too, perhaps not as much as you but we have had some discussions on tagging before.
We are having one now too ;)
@iandotkelly Well, to some degree we are indeed.
In any event, I will be exploiting this li'l loophole for all that it's worth as I will be including title tags in my questions. I want lots of badges.
Honestly I don't think that will make a blind bit of difference, and to think of it as a loophole to be exploited is ..... disappointing, but its your preference.
2
19:20
And many of my questions see no answers/votes any way.
Well, that's what it is.
Fair enough
@coleopterist And I will (un)happily clean those up whereever it clutters the title or hinders reading pleasure (and out of a distaste for users abusing "loopholes" to gain strange advantages from the system, now that I know the true reason for your future cluttered question titles).
2
You can surely try. Please stay away from my intriguing questions though.
I suppose that not much was accomplished here. But it is nevertheless nice to have had a conversation with the three of you in real time, so to speak.
Indeed
Anyway - one and all - I have to go. Happy New Year (just in case I don't get a chance to speak to you again before then)
and to you and yours too.
Ciao.
Tom
Tom
19:28
@coleopterist Well, I don't know where you stand in continuing to edit peoples posts... but if everything is back to normal except for the part where you're going to include tags in all your titles, then I'd say we accomplished something at least :)
@Tom I don't think so. The worst and most likely outcome will probably be that the site lost a valuable contributor in terms of improving edits.
Tom
Tom
@ChristianRau guess we'll have to wait and see, but hopefully that's not the case...
