Q: Identifying a movie about a rock band and its mysterious manager

cesarI'm trying to remember the name of a movie about a rock band (garage band) looking for a good manager. Then a guy with reputation that looked like Sam Neil (pretty sure it wasn't him) came in and made them tour (in a van etc). At the end the guy disappears.

@AnkitSharma We must have a script that redirects new users who asked ID question to a page that will guide them. Something like the script that redirects new users to a page whenever they post a new answer.

@AnkitSharma Well, I won't discuss it further as it has been discussed many times. It was just my opinion.

Q: How do they shoot helicopter/aeroplane blast/crash scenes?

A JMany action movies have a scene where they show a plane or helicopter blast/crash. Seeing as how planes are very costly and it includes various dangers, they wouldn't try to crash real ones. In Spectre, the helicopter in which Blofeld is present is crashed on the bridge. In The Living Daylights, ...

Q: Why isn't anime critically analyzed like other forms of literature or entertainment?

The Pickle TicklerIn high school English classes, we read many classics, such as Shakespeare, Steinbeck, Lee, etc. In many other classes, popular TV shows and movies are analyzed. Granted, these are also classics, such as Hitchcock's Psycho or Nichols' The Graduate. Why is anime/manga not as critically analyzed b...

Q: Please help ID this 1990s movie with drive-by cafe attack set on a crossroad in North Africa

KitKatI am trying to identify a movie I saw in the 1990s or early 2000s, an intelligent, well-made English-language thriller/suspense/action film with multi-national locations. The opening scene involves a drive-by attack on a cafe on a dusty street, possibly with a street market or a lot of shop stall...

8:18 AM
@Hakase Because the vast majority of anime is either a) for children or b) for hormonal teenagers. And I say that as someone who has watched a few anime shows.
I don't mean to be insulting, for the record.
I just don't see anything really worth analysis.

anime deals a lot with psychological problems, much more than any western cartoons I've seen
social anxiety stuff, talking to people, etc
personal crysis of identity in a society

@Hakase There is a big difference between "dealing" with something, and including it as a way to better target a specific audience.

it's much deeper than it seems from crap like naruto and whatever's most popular
you may be surprised but anime and manga which touch upon these issues get a lot of popularity among people who are having them
descriptions like "a shy girl/boy meets a boy/girl in a school and they like each other but can't find courage to talk" is a whole genre
well, anyway, I see where you're coming from

@Hakase You say that, but the culture surrounding anime simply doesn't support that idea. I have no doubt that there are true works of art in anime, but most of it is fan service, waifus, and super powers. It isn't analysed seriously for the exact same reasons that the vast majority of American cartoons/comics aren't analysed seriously.
@Hakase Yeah, that seems like a good argument against serious analysis to me, not for it.

I think it's more a problem of a lot of people brushing off anime as a whole and not even trying to get a good taste of what it is

8:31 AM
There is an entire, popular genre that is effectively nothing more than a specific power fantasy for a subset of the audience.

I'm not aware of many western comics primarily portraying somebody's psychological journey, bit I could find a number of anime and manga on that topic

Again, I don't mean to be insulting, just in case I'm coming across that way. There is nothing wrong with watching and enjoying anime - I do myself, from time to time.
But I'm also not going to pretend that there is a depth or a maturity to the art form as a whole.

yea I understand
I think Mushishi could be interesting to you
check it out sometime, it's different from everything else

I've seen and enjoyed Hunter X Hunter, Attack on Titan, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and One Punch Man. I've also watched and did not enjoy Steins;Gate. I think that's all.
Is Mushishi anything like those?

not even close

8:39 AM
Well if it isn't on Netflix or Crunchyroll, I can't watch it regardless.

@DrRDizzle What, completely disagree
Anime become way mature then western stuff and way silly too and you statement in wrong
And if we apply American censorship, way many anime can be considered as adult only

> I have no doubt that there are true works of art in anime, but most of it is fan service, waifus, and super powers. It isn't analysed seriously for the exact same reasons that the vast majority of American cartoons/comics aren't analysed seriously.

hmmm

if anybody knows both a lot of western comics and anime/manga I'd like to hear their opinion on which has more depth

But your first statement was too close and straight negative

8:43 AM
actually I think we could find some opinions in sff

@Hakase I have not seen lot of them but i think western cartoon seems too censored compare to anime. Anime always go to extremes

@AnkitSharma Well then it's a good job that I didn't just leave it at my first comment.

For example death in american cartoons avoided a lot, for anime it's not a big deal

Death != depth.
Sex != depth

are psychological issues depth?

8:45 AM
Seriousness != death
@Hakase Like everything else, it depends how they are used. Does it add to the larger theme the work is dealing with? Is it just there, are does it provide a commentary?

I get annoyed when people don't die in extreme situation and seems unrealistic and i got distracted away from it
Death is important for me if applicable

People in general have a really hard time distinguishing something that acts serious from something that is worth taking seriously. Humans are blinded by tone.

To me having restrictions make the work narrow and american cartoons seems to have restriction. Non restricted circumstance can make better character development

@DrRDizzle honestly you can just take any literary work and say "hah this is not serious" or go into unnecessarily overcomplicated ponderings about some minute thought a character had about life and death
personally I don't know what it takes objectively to be considered good enough for serious critics to consider
this is why we're having that question
I'm also posting around trying to find answers and attract attention

Q: Why isn't anime critically analyzed like other forms of literature or entertainment?
Ans : Because of Narrow appeal.

- It's animated medium which is not as widely received as live action
- Anime doesn't reach globally well, maybe cost issue in transition

etc etc
Anyways Arcans answer if straight "Anime is just not that popular. "
@DrRDizzle Agreed

8:54 AM
Is there any chance that anime is critically analysed, but only in Japan?

This category includes writers of critical and analytic works about anime and manga, not people who only write anime or manga. Compare with Category:Anime screenwriters and Category:Manga artists....

it sure is analyzed by the regularly issued magazines and journals

I think a good answer to your question might go into the cultural divide and language barrier between the East and the West as an explanation why Western critics, by and large, aren't interested in anime. It might also touch upon the fact that anime only really became easily consumable over here since the invention of the Internet and fan subs, meaning that a lot of people won't have had all that much exposure to it.
Throw in the idea that Western animation skews younger (which gives off the notion that all animation skews younger), and you might have a decent answer.

@DrRDizzle Why don't you answer it, you already did in bits here

ya seems like a good answer

9:00 AM
Because I'm only speculating. I don't really know much about anime.
I don't have any evidence for any of that, it's just what makes sense to me.

it's a good insight still
we're not hell-bent on concrete evidence behind answers

I might write something up then.

But you hit the right spot. Animation do target kids in western culture and in here too but anime don't do that always

I think to a lot of our users don't even consider the language barrier coz we're used to it by now

@Hakase Language is a barrier, I know way many people who still want to prefer hindi version in India and very few anime dubbed in hindi
Language is a barrier

9:03 AM
@DrRDizzle crunchyroll.com/mushi-shi does this link work for you?

Jonathan Clements is a good critic, met him once nice guy
also Frederik L. Schodt puts out a lot of interesting stuff

@Hakase I'm at work, I won't be clicking it. I'll try at home.

On the sidenote anime film not even got released in India but mostly all american anime film got released here. So it's not even that widespread
And I do think India is not that small market
@ToshinouKyouko I don't have Idea about them. I don't even prefer following any critics

> many, many anime have underlying themes and meanings that stretch sometimes deeper than current novels/books that are considered literary classics by the academic community.
Might be a little biased coming from an anime enthusiast.
Pretty much everything has some kind of underlying themes anyway.

I would say 'some' :P
a lot of anime isn't deeper than boobs

9:09 AM
On the bottom line it's probably just popularity.

"many, many" is too much
@ToshinouKyouko lol, agreed

And it's not like schools really discuss every kind of bullshit live-action film or book either. You can't really compare Hitchcock or Kubrick with Dragon Ball Z or Twilight.

I never get why many of the kids anime talk about boobs and comparing them too very casually. Is it normal in Japan or it's just a anime thing?

@AnkitSharma I guess it's a teen thing. ;-)

@AnkitSharma a lot of anime is targetted to pubescent teens

9:12 AM
Poking boobs, talking about them in public not so common here
But anime made me wonder if it's that common there

japanese kids have a weird thing where they try to stick their fingers up unsuspecting people's butts
let me find a wikipedia page

Well, I mean it in the most constructive way, but one step to get anime to be taken more seriously is to work on its surrounding culture, for example by investigating if Anime & Manga's chatroom really needs an official bot that continuously spams pictures of hot manga girls in suggestive positions.

Kanchō (カンチョー) is a Japanese prank performed by clasping the hands together in the shape of an imaginary gun and attempting to poke an unsuspecting victim's anus, often while exclaiming "Kan-CHO!". The word is a slang adoption of the Japanese word for enema (浣腸, kanchō). In accordance with widespread practice, the word is generally written in katakana when used in its slang sense, and in kanji when used of enemas in the medical sense. It is a form of prank amongst children in East Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, etc. In Korea, it is called ttongchim.(똥침) In Taiwan, it is called...

@ToshinouKyouko I have seen that in many anime

@ToshinouKyouko Da...wuuut?

@DrRDizzle Don't people do the prank of placing pen like things before someone sits on there chair ? ;)

9:16 AM
Ok, that's gotta be a new height of "I just don't get this culture".

@NapoleonWilson i have suggested this, and it's slightly better than before - if you can imagine
i still think it should be changed

@ToshinouKyouko Yeah, I think there was a big meta post about it once.
Though, it might just be that I'm not there often enough, but I didn't notice much of a change. Recently there was even a flagged one, I think.

@ToshinouKyouko It's improved but still not as much to make me open that chatroom in office, so i picked to ignore that bot

It is just something that contributes to my (maybe admittedly skewed) picture of the anime/manga fanbase in general.

yeah, it's more like - it's 90% girls instead of 100%
the thing is it's user submitted and the users who submit only put those pics in

Dr R DizzleNote: I can only speak from a Western perspective here. For all I know, anime is critically analysed in Japan. BTW, @steelerfan, today is Rocky II; eager to know whether Rocky agrees for a rematch with Apollo.

Apollo Creed: "Ain't gonna be no rematch. Ain't gonna be no rematch."
Rocky: "Don't need one."
Rocky II is solely about the rematch.

user116211
@DrRDizzle oh... okay no more stuff.... don't spoil my excitement ;(

I just made me laugh that the final lines of Rocky are effectively retconned from existence in the opening minutes of Rocky II.

@DrRDizzle Which, to their defense, is the case in pretty much any medium.

Potentially controversial opinion: Creed is the best Rocky film by some margin.

user116211
And the music is exceptionally good.

@MAFIA36790 I thought you had already seen all those films.

user116211
9:26 AM
@DrRDizzle You mean the last movie of the Rocky Franchise? I've not seen that though.

@NapoleonWilson I don't know if I'd go that far. Most mediums have their fair share of trash, but in my admittedly limited experience, it does seem like anime suffers more than others in that area.
@MAFIA36790 The latest one, yes. It's probably my favourite film of the year so far.

user116211
@NapoleonWilson No; Yesterday I saw I; today is II; and so on. HBO is running it as a marathon.

@MAFIA36790 Oh. I just thought because you were so excited about it beforehand. Sounded like you already know and love those films.

@ToshinouKyouko Anime version of Frank Miller ;P

@ToshinouKyouko I''m pretty sure this is a fake subtitle, but it's still very funny.

@NapoleonWilson it's totally unofficial

@DrRDizzle I believe that it's correct
i saw the documentary
the context is that he was saying he made anime for kids, not for otaku

@ToshinouKyouko how exactly?
but let's bring this talk to our room

@MAFIA36790 Really? Frank Miller made comics "dark" and "gritty" and "angsty" and "kind of wank" for a long time. Miyasaki just makes charming films. I'd say they are nothing alike.

9:31 AM
@Hakase In which way? Seems to be a somewhat of a community effort. Seems as "official" as you can get in an SE community without actually involving SE.

user116211
@DrRDizzle No, I'm not saying that; it is his style of attacking something.... heard his statement on Occupy Movement?

I made it and another user uploaded the pics, not much officiality

@MAFIA36790 No, but I've heard Frank Miller is kind of a right-wing nutter now, so I can imagine what he might be saying.

user116211
@DrRDizzle ah.

@NapoleonWilson oh really?
are you sure it came from our room?
and if it was recent or just somebody went back in time to flag something to be mean to us

9:34 AM
@Hakase Well, it was that Taisho guy, which I think is your bot.

uh-huh

@Hakase Well, I don't know.

did it get approved tho?

All I know is that it didn't surprise me the slightest from what I had seen of his pcitures. (Even if I probably wouldn't have flagged it myself.)
@Hakase I think it was a deleted message.

so… somebody flagged an already deleted message?

user116211
9:35 AM
Okay coming to Rocky, my favourite moments were when Rocky initially refused Mickey's proposal of he being his manager and after rebuking him, suddenly running after him and nodded to his proposal; also at the eve of the fight, when he went to the stadium; he was totally nervous at that moment.

I'd like to find some site-wide flag history so I could see what the issue really was

@Hakase No, it got deleted by flagging.

so the flag got approved then

@MAFIA36790 Rocky's entire character sort of changes between Rocky II and Rocky III, so be prepared for that.

user116211
@DrRDizzle okay..

9:37 AM
@Hakase Hmm, I'd have to correct myself a little, it was in last december.

@Hakase I think the issue is that you have a bot posting NSFW content in a chatroom on SE.
I have no idea how that is acceptable, but swearing as part of a joke isn't.

the issue is in the perceived intention
we don't perceive as nsfw what others may (I guess we have less strict jobs? idk)
but sometimes somebody gets mean with their words and that's not cool

@Hakase Indeed. I fully admit that it might just be my perceived intention, but it contributes to the image I have of the anime/manga culture at large. That might be a wrong impression and just be me, but that's at least my impression.

also our room kinda partially represents the outlook of japan on partial nudity and suggestive behavior so it's not as "unsafe" for us as for users from other communities
sure, sure, this is all a result of the root issue we've been discussing about cultural differences and language barriers

(And I'm a German, so I'm not scared of nude people, but I also know where to put them and what an overabundance of them suggests.)

9:41 AM
we don't get surprised at this point when others react like that to what we deem normal, coz we live in different normalities

there's sometimes borderline images which some may precive as NSFW but we do have commands to un-onebox images and delete them.
in the end you can't blame the bot, you blame the people who give it the links to post and if the upload worked fine we know who it is

This is how a lot of anime fans (obviously not all) come across, btw.
Which again, isn't something that helps it be taken seriously as an art form.

@Memor-X Well, that's what I do indeed. ;-)

@DrRDizzle started reading right-to-left :p

@DrRDizzle bootleg and fansub? correctly me if i'm wrong but isn't Fairly Odd Parents Subbed and Released officially in japan?
2 wrongs don't make it right.....but 2 rights make a left and it's time for the show (couldn't resists)

9:51 AM
@Memor-X I have literally no idea, it's just a joke about how seriously some people take Japanese cartoons.
@Hakase Lol

idk but have u seen my little pony fans

I have no idea if there's a japanese analog of weabooism

there's an overlap somewhat

@ToshinouKyouko if they are anything like what's shown in Bob's Burgers, yes.

@ToshinouKyouko I have, they do weird things like using pictures of their favourite characters as their avatars :P

9:53 AM
@DrRDizzle kek

">.>

In all seriousness, when the thing you like becomes your entire personality, something has gone very wrong. Anime seems to inspire that just as much as My Little Pony does.

I don't think anime inspires it but rather certain communities around anime and by analogy mlp

in the recent users list i see 4 people who've migrated from the Maid Cafe here who i would suspect not normally show their avatar faces here. what did your guys do to us!

from what I know, these people usually very seriously hang around some other hardcore fans either online or in person
they meet up rather often is what I've heard on tv and on reddits

9:55 AM
tbh I think a lot of it has to do with the demographics
young nerdy males

unless these reports are all fabricated and there's no such thing but you know, people can be that crazy

@Memor-X They probably just followed links to chat messages, nothing out of the ordinary.

there's a lot of escapism in it

What's that anime called where something unusual happens at a school, and the main character knows about it but circumstances mean he has to deal with it rather than confront it, but the real issue is that he can't get a girlfriend?

Spoiler: That's every anime ever.

9:59 AM
That's a poor troll attempt

user116211
@DrRDizzle No, no not controversial; it's indeed the best Rocky film; I've checked the responses in wikipedia; Rotten Tomatoes gave a rating of 94% !

@Quill That's my best effort, I'm sorry it doesn't meet your standards for trolling.
@MAFIA36790 Well, good. It earns that 94% and more.

user116211
They are also planning for sequel.

I haven't even seen it yet. :'(

if you wanna get anime fans annoyed, you can start calling avatar or rwby an anime and watch them tear themselves apart

@NapoleonWilson :O

@ToshinouKyouko you probably meant people who like pointless arguments
what does it matter if it's anime or not − just enjoy it if you can

@Hakase yeah, anime fans :)

@ToshinouKyouko i don't believe the US can do anything good with Shoujo Ai/Yuri after what they did with Haruka and Michiru in Sailor Moon the first time. so Avatar and RWBY are anime because of the shoujo ai/yuri undertones/themes

@ToshinouKyouko :/

we're kinda representing our little community here

I don't even follow any of those popular 99999-episode anime

So I've seen Hunter X Hunter, but I've just read the title for an anime called Servant x Service too. Is there a reason for that naming style?

it's like always sunny in philadelphia or seinfeld to me

@DrRDizzle we might have a Q&A about that

@Hakase It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is one of the funniest shows ever made.

People have strange (often personal) interests and reasoning when making (and naming) things

10:06 AM
@ToshinouKyouko This seems to be about romantic couples, I'm asking about the name of the anime.

I think naming conventions are pretty much established in anime, manga and japanese games
you can often see very similar genres have very similar kinds of names

@DrRDizzle it's generally pairing up two characters - not nessicarily romantic
or Themes, etc

@ToshinouKyouko OK then, I guess that makes sense.

while I'm here - does movies.se have any community recommendation posts or anything?

300: Rise of an Empire is a 2014 American fantasy war film directed by Noam Murro. It is a follow-up to the 2007 film 300, taking place before, during and after the main events of its predecessor and based on the Battle of Artemisium and the Battle of Salamis. It is based on the as-yet-unreleased Frank Miller graphic novel Xerxes. Zack Snyder, who directed and co-wrote the original film, acts as writer and producer on Rise of an Empire. The cast includes Lena Headey, Peter Mensah, David Wenham, Andrew Tiernan, Andrew Pleavin and Rodrigo Santoro reprising their roles from the first film, alongside...

@AnkitSharma might've seen memento - does that have robin williams in it? I haven't heard of the other one tho :)
@DrRDizzle ooh

@ToshinouKyouko Memnto is with Guy Pearce
The Machinist have Christian Bale

user116211
@ToshinouKyouko: Also, if you like Cold War themed movies, then you can watch Bridge of Spies .

I was thinking of One Hour Photo
@MAFIA36790 :o

10:25 AM
@MAFIA36790 Great film.

user116211
@DrRDizzle yeh!! Awesome. I never could imagine East Germany had different interests than Soviet Union.

Not into war film but i love psychological/thriller and this two are my top fav with Fight club

user116211
I really loved the character Rudolf Abel.

user116211
Also, @ToshinouKyouko, if you like thriller, you can watch Fugitive; though old but it's really amazing.

Harrison Ford?
yeah, seen that one a few times
think i might have it on vhs somewhere
trakt.tv/users/mrpineapple if anyone has a trakt account, i would be happy to have some friends to follow

user116211
10:33 AM
Also, if you want some extremely crazy, nonsense and yet not so bad movie, you can watch Abraham Lincoln: The Vampire Slayer ;P

don't visit our mod nomination page :p
is… anyone alive?
what have I done

user116211
And if you love owls, you can go for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. I liked it.

user116211
Oooor, you can go for old movies of Bruce Lee ;)

that.. seems odd.
I'm not a big fan of Zach Snyder tho (or an overly big fan of owls) so I think i'll probably pass
Abraham Lincon on the other hand sounds like a fun dumb movie

@ToshinouKyouko No, just chat, which fits perfectly to this.

user116211
10:42 AM
@ToshinouKyouko it's totally your call; but I actually liked it.

user116211
@ToshinouKyouko Totally agree.

this 2014 thread is v useful

@ToshinouKyouko If you like Vietnam treatments, be sure to pay Brian DePalma's Casualties of War a visit, it deserves to be among the other big names of Vietnam cinema.
(It's a more personal story, though, and less of a historic war depiction.)
@MAFIA36790 Uh, what's historic about 300? ;-)

@NapoleonWilson oh cool, tyvm. I think the next vietnam one im gonna watch is 84 charlie mopic

user116211
@NapoleonWilson You have point ;P

10:45 AM
@ToshinouKyouko Do you mean Insomnia rather than Memento?

@NapoleonWilson I meant One Hour Photo

user116211
@ToshinouKyouko: Did you watch Bond series?

@MAFIA36790 as in, James Bond?

user116211
Just day before yesterday, I watched Quantum of Solace.

I haven't watched the ones past casino royale

10:49 AM
@MAFIA36790 Not the best one, though. Neither in general nor of Craig's run. Craig's weakest actually.

@ToshinouKyouko I did a list of the Must See Films of 2014 and 2015 on my blog if you are interested.

@DrRDizzle I am ty

@DrRDizzle Flagged, no Interstellar.

@NapoleonWilson But it is there.
> Interstellar - A smart, well made sci-fi film slightly let down by an emotional undercurrent that's poorly handled by the director.

@NapoleonWilson is interstellar actually good? I've heard a lot of both sides

user116211
10:51 AM
@NapoleonWilson Didn't know that actually; I never got what actually Fields was meant for; she suddenly disappeared from the movie and later we could know she was killed ;/ But yeh not bad that you cannot watch.

@DrRDizzle i would've put nightcrawler as one of the top films

@ToshinouKyouko My review of Interstellar is here. It's good, but flawed.
@ToshinouKyouko In retrospect, I wish I had.

@DrRDizzle Oh, in the bottom list. Ok then. Well, flagged for having Nightcrawler in that list instead of the detailed one with pictures. ;-)

user116211
Meanwhile,

But at least you also list Godzilla.
@ToshinouKyouko It's great! Don't listen to any other opinions and watch it right now!

@NapoleonWilson Yeah, that's fair enough.

ok I will make my own opinion then
i also thought birdman was kinda overrated

user116211
How I could forget that....

@ToshinouKyouko It is, but not as much The Revenant.

user116211
@ToshinouKyouko: Did you watch Equilibrium?

10:56 AM
@DrRDizzle It's the only one from that list that's entirely positively commented on, so it might be a sign for putting it onto the must watch.

@NapoleonWilson I'm not going to edit the article at this point, but I agree. I can't remember my reasoning for not putting it on the Must Watch list to be honest - I think it may have tried to keep my Must Watch list to broadly appealing films? Regardless, it isn't a mistake I intend on making again.

@MAFIA36790 Should I believe him this time?

@DrRDizzle i didnt see much hype for that. i enjoyed it
@MAFIA36790 nope

@Hakase I got that badge only once
@ToshinouKyouko Agreed

huh for some reason i thought equilibrium was an anglina jolie movie
I'm glad it isn't. added :)

11:00 AM
And The Revenant was great and engaging. It might have had made more out of it than it was by the audience, but Birdman tried to make more out of it than it was by itself.

Best thing Angelina Jolie ever did was Changeling, rest i never cared about her
@ToshinouKyouko It's good to me. There is better stuff out there but it's worth watching

the martian looks good also

user116211
Well, it stars Bale, one of my favourites.

brb lunching, this has been v useful :)

user116211
@AnkitSharma Well, this is actually the last time.

11:03 AM
@ToshinouKyouko It also is good, even if a little under my personal expectations.

@NapoleonWilson The Revenant was meaningless, pretentious trash that only existed to stroke the directors own ego while he jerked off to the shots. Alejandro Iñárritu is a hack.
I'm still mad that a "performance" that saw Leonardo DiCaprio grunt and crawl was the one that ended up netting him the Oscar.

user116211
@DrRDizzle C'mon at-least he got it.

@DrRDizzle Um, okay? Sorry, but that's just respectless to say. You're known to disrespect directors but this might be a new low, even after what you said about other well-respected directors.
@DrRDizzle Sure, that was a bad decision, but also an expected one. Just treat it as a "Lifetime Achievement Oscar" then. ;-)
@DrRDizzle Not enough "character development", eh? ;-)
@DrRDizzle Too much of a visual movie, eh? ;-)
Maybe a movie with less enticing and "jerk-off worthy" shots might have transported a more coherent plot ripe with "character development"? How 'bout readin' a book then?

I have not seen it but I am sure it's not as bad as dizzle think
I heard only positive about it

@AnkitSharma Well, I can assure you Mr. Iñárritu certainly didn't jerk off to anything at least.

Q: a silent movie on 2 guys in a hotel

xanderin the late 70's / early 80's a silent movie (the main characters didn't speak, but you could hear all the normal sounds) about 2 guys that started working in a hotel, where all kinds of things went wrong. they glued a guy to a diving board, something went wrong with the painting, a tennismatch i...

@AnkitSharma I don't know if it was "meanignless" because, I don't know, DiCaprio didn't meet his dead daughter in space, or if it was more "pretentious" because the cinematography was too well-thought out. But I liked it and you might like it too.

I do want to check it but my pending list is messed up and too long

@NapoleonWilson The cinematography is literally the only thing worth talking about that film.
@NapoleonWilson There aren't even any characters, so how could there be any character development?

@DrRDizzle Uhuh. Well, I saw a bunch of them.

@NapoleonWilson One-dimensional ones, sure.

11:29 AM
@DrRDizzle What do you need multi-faceted characters for? It's a motherfriggin' survival story. I won't make more of it than that, but neither less.
Of course those people are one-dimensional, they're actual people in actual situations, not some made up characters with pseudo-background.

@NapoleonWilson I know right, what would a film that lives or dies based on how much you care for the character trying to survive need interesting, well-written characters for? What a ridiculous notion.

@DrRDizzle Indeed. Nice change of opinion, though.

@NapoleonWilson My opinion hasn't changed, has it?

@NapoleonWilson Dizzle finds actual reality poorly paced, one dimensional, and overly pretentious.

If you can only care for someone if he has some pseudo background or forced character development, check your emotions please.
@KutuluMike Granted.

11:32 AM
@KutuluMike In fairness, reality really is poorly paced. Nothing I'm doing now is relevant to the story of my life really.
@NapoleonWilson You can only care for a character if I empathise with them. Watching Leonardo DiCaprio roll around in the snow for 2 and half hours doesn't do that.
"Forced character development"
