@mbq By meme approach, all I meant was using "overflow" in the url.
What about statisticsoverflow.com? It's related to "overflow" and is also an "insider joke".

:102508 Still, I don't know why you think that the name can drive anyone away...
Pear lovers do buy macs.

Pear lovers do buy macs? Oh boy...

The same logic then applies to names with "Stats" in there (i.e. it shouldn't drive anyone away). But I do think that a "bad" name can impact the community. One of the nice things about StackOverflow as a name is that nobody has an opinion on it. We need to be careful not to select a name that would have been more equivalent to choosing "JavaOverflow". :)

Shane
That said, once the community is established, the name shouldn't matter. I just think that it can matter in the development stage.

Shane
I'm still of the opinion that CrossValidated shouldn't keep anyone away...whether someone knows what it means isn't particularly important so long as it has a statistical meaning. And I like how it can be viewed as a description of what the community does.

I agree; I just think that both names won't keep anyone away but CrossValidated has this advantage that I don't look like a fast&dirty copy of StackOverflow.
Among others of course.

@mbq @Shane I suppose I going for don't offend anyone with an "Overflow" name, rather than go for something more "edgy". I am British after all

@Shane: As I've said in the comments, I'm put off by cross validated. I sincerely doubt that it will be recognizable to people with introductory to graduate level statistical training in the social sciences.

drknexus
@csgillespie: Putting stats in the title has the problem being too specific and excluding other disciplines.

drknexus
@mbq: The name can and will drive question askers to or away from us. When we ask a question, we consider our target audience. If the name makes it seem as though this isn't our target audience, we won't ask a question.

Again, the memorability of something is important. If I go to an informal statistics forum on my campus and mention something catchy and familiar, people will visit it later that day. If I mention something that sounds alien, it doesn't matter how much I try to sell it - only a few will visit the site.

@drknexus: What name do you suggest?

mbq
:105683 LikertScaleMadness.com?
:105694 There is StackOverflow and people keep asking about making plots in R or using CSS.

I posted a few more names.

Another thing that we could do would be to organize a set time for everyone to join the chat room here and discuss the name. That might be too chaotic?

Something makes this chat marginally popular, despite of my marketing actions...

Shane
I guess that some people just aren't interested in meta discussion. The same few people tend to contribute to the meta site as well...

Kind of surprised that CV is +22 while SO is +27. Lot of downvoting ... what do y'all think of ConfidenceRegion? (Or some of the other contenders) .. seems like a nice compromise and affords multiple plays on the word/concept.
Weird. I show up as "User" (ars here).

Shane
I like some of the other ones (and have voted for them).

Shane
ConfidenceRegion isn't my favorite, but I already gave it a +1.

ars
Yeah, not my favorite. But it's not bad and addresses some of the objections from the SO proponents.
Hmm, still showing up as User131.. even though I created a meta-SO profile. Maybe I need to clear cookies or something.

Shane
Shows up as ars for me.
