@AndriyM - yes I've heard that as well - however, most of the time when I run EXPLAIN it shows an identical plan with both methods. This is the first time in many years that I've seen a difference, and the thing that's got me stumped is that the difference only shows up on one database with identical table schema but on another it's business as usual, with both showing the same efficient plan.
My best guess is that some setting or other is affecting things and it might have to do with table size.. but I played with a bunch of settings and couldn't figure it out.

Probably a really old joke but I heard it for the first time yesterday:
How many DBAs does it take to change a light bulb?

One-to-many.

@Colin'tHart None, it's a hardware problem
Hadn't heard your variation before either

How many members of The Heap does it take to change a light bulb?
All of us, one to hold the bulb and the rest to drink until the room spins

I got a .dump file from a partner which he created from couchDB DMS. I just installed couchDB on my local machine but i struggle on how to reconstruct this .dump.

Any chance of putting the xmltable() into the SELECT statement/section, rather the FROM statement/section ?

A: How to convert xml entities to unicode characters (with read-only access) in Oracle?

Michael KutzThe data looks like it is raw XML data without XML Tags, not the translated text. You should probably get that fixed first. In the meantime, you can run the data through XMLTable() to do the translation for you. with data as ( select 'Hallöle slovenĈina Hallöle slovenđina' str from...

@FerencRozsa how was the dump file generated? What is in it? Maybe the person who generated it can help you?

I've got quite a few JOIN's in the script and would prefer to keep the xmltable() in the SELECT statement so I don't have to rethink the JOINs
in the FROM section, the JOINs follow the following format:
... FROM .. INNER JOIN .. ON .. INNER JOIN .. ON .. LEFT JOIN .. ON ..
and I'm not quite sure how to inlcude the xmltable() in there,
given that I've already included the table from which a column is parsed in xmltable() anyway
so why do I need to include it in the FROM section "again", as it were? (cf. docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/functions228.htm)
not sure what to put in the "ON" of the JOIN...
@Colin'tHart :-)

may have found "it":
ON 1=1
a "dummy" to satisfy the (modern) syntax
see, for instance:

Q: How to get dummy value for XML empty tag in table using Oracle?

Urbiselect a.test from demotable b ,XMLTable('//test' passing xmltype(b.xmlTagColumn) columns test varchar(10) path '.') a b.xmlTagColumn has xml content. If b.xmlTagColumn has <test></test> then I am not getting anything from above statement not even null. How can I get null or dummy value f...

@TomV-trytopanswers.xyz I am sure that it was created with couchDB. Its a whole image of their database, with all dependencies.

@TomV-trytopanswers.xyz I know that already. Thx anyway. But it seems that my dump isnt pure / valid JSON.
