@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells No progress on any Zurich gigs?

@gbn Crickets. I'm guessing they've gone cold or the hiring managed either didn't like my C.V. or decided he couldn't be arsed with the paperwork.
The second one was only for 3 months, so traipsiing of to Switzerland for a gig that short would'nt have been worth it.

Q: Is the comment-only answer acceptable?

Peter VandivierToday I ran across this question, which I think is a pretty good example of a situation where a full answer may not be warranted. It was a bit messy in the original edit, but there was a correct (if incredibly trivial) answer available to respond with. So... Is the comment-only answer ever const...

9:45 AM
@dezso Hopefully the OP will pay attention to the auto-generated edit comment and realise that the word "efficient" is shorter than "performant", which means that typing "efficient" is more performant.

10:34 AM
...and let's not forget that typing either "efficient" or "performant" are both "effective".

10:47 AM
After Noun everyone

@hot2use ...might be quicker to type "quicker".

I like "best".
Even though it's ambiguous.

:-)

Anyone ever had the golden opportunity to design a database model for a custom/dynamic/extensions forms

...after his question had finished reverberating through The Heap™ a great silence descended.

@Mathematics Can you provide more specifics?
I've had the opportunity to work with bad examples if I understand you correctly

@Colin'tHart you are all optimists — I prefer "less awful"

Ice Age 3: SQL Server froze the world

Q: SQL Server switched to use pagefile exclusively instead of RAM and effectively froze the world

ElaskanatorI was hammering my SQL Server instance yesterday for about 3 hours running an intensive calculation which was consuming all allocated physical RAM (I have it limited to 2GB due to my limited workstation hardware), and suddenly it (and many other things?) released all their memory in an apparent s...

@JackDouglas Least awful?

did the grinch swing by to delete the comments from this question?

12:01 PM
@JackDouglas Heh, searching for that, found a question at hermeneutics

12:26 PM
We have a system with let say X sections, users want to add there own forms to each section,

e.g. if they have a section for user profile, they may want to store more data to this section, e.g. passport number, this field isn't available in base form

We may add passport number to core system, but we are in MULTI TENANT business hence we want to provide end users with a core system then they can add forms to some of parts of the system
We are only in planning phase and above is nothing just example made up by myself to explain :)

1:06 PM
@Mathematics That's going to be a mess

1:30 PM
I hate to say this but maybe JSON/XML may be the less shitty solution

@PeterVandivier yes

@TomV that's exact what came in my mind, this doesn't seems like a good choice for relational database
@TomV I was thinking about mongodb

@TomV EAV comes into mind. Whether in tables or JSON/XML columns.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Yes EAV, but in a multi-tenant situation where "users" can add their own fields possibly with different data types
as I said, it's going to be a mess anyway

1:49 PM
interesting term EAV...
reading about it now

@TomV Yeah. And the more one would like to apply constraints and type checking, the more complex and messy it'll get.
If anyone is not convinced, let them take a look at the Magento database diagram

Q: Magento Database Diagram

NotJayI found this great diagram for Magento Database Tables, however, I would like to know if this is still up to date. I am running Magento 1.9. It was published in 2009 and several Magento updates have been rolled out since then. I am hoping that the database structure is still relatively the sam...

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Dear god...
That's terrifying.

morning fellas.

@jadarnel27 Even if you keep only the tables that start with eav_, it is. Like a maze

i'm not sure this is worth a specific post, but can you spot the error in this code?
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
@server = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@provider=N'SQLNCLI',
@srvproduct = 'SQLNCLI',
@provstr=N'SERVER=DR;User ID=Serverlink',
@datasrc='tcp:0.0.0.0'

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@locallogin = N'PoorlyNamedDomain\AssHole', @useself = N'True'
(i'll do a question if you think that's better)

1:56 PM
@James just don't put "asshole" in the post, or it'll be edited out :-)
2

ugh, your right.
SE's censorship bugs the hell out of me, but you folks have really helped me a lot

@James we try to be nice
at least, I do.

lol
here it is reposted
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
@server = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@provider=N'SQLNCLI',
@srvproduct = 'SQLNCLI',
@provstr=N'SERVER=DR;User ID=Serverlink',
@datasrc='tcp:0.0.0.0'

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@locallogin = N'PoorlyNamedDomain\TrouseredApe', @useself = N'True'

I just published a new blog post about a slightly interesting (to me, anyway) issue regarding manually created stats objects, which can be required if auto_create_statistics is turned off on a database. sqlserver.science/performance/…
2

@James you can CTRL-K to format code in chat

1:59 PM
@James TrouseredApe is funny! Unless you're an Ape, I suppose.

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
@server = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@provider=N'SQLNCLI',
@srvproduct = 'SQLNCLI',
@provstr=N'SERVER=DR;User ID=Serverlink',
@datasrc='tcp:0.0.0.0'

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@locallogin = N'PoorlyNamedDomain\TrouseredApe', @useself = N'True'

@ypercubeᵀᴹ nice find, thank you so much

i cant see the difference in ypercube's
(not that I didn't use it)
something I should have mentioned, these servers are on 2 domains

@James it's only the formatting?

i think so
now i'm getting this:
googling....
it looks related to the 2 domains, right?
somwhere, i'm not specifying a domain....
oh, the full error:
LE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "EIH-DR01.eih.ehs.org" returned message "Login timeout expired".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "EIH-DR01.eih.ehs.org" returned message "A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.".
Msg 10049, Level 16, State 1, Line 12
maybe a firewall issue?

gbn
2:08 PM
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
@server = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@provider=N'SQLNCLI',
@srvproduct = 'SQLNCLI',
@provstr=N'SERVER=DR;User ID=Serverlink',
@datasrc='tcp:0.0.0.0'
explian the @datasrc='tcp:0.0.0.0' please
and @provstr=N'SERVER=DR;User ID=Serverlink',

or maybe it's this bit: SERVER=DR

gbn
what <are you trying to do BTW?

Maybe it's the space character in that string?

@datasrc='tcp:0.0.0.0' apparently forces it to use the TCP protocol to talk between servers

gbn
the entire command looks wrong

2:11 PM
goal is to link 2 servers on different domains. I've never had problems with it before - its always just worked

gbn

A: Can you create a linked server in SQL Server and then refer to it with an alias

gbnYes... the linked server name and the target of the linked server are 2 different parameters to sp_addlinkedserver. Avoid using the GUI and it's obvious. EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'Sales', @srvproduct = 'SQL Server', @datasrc = 'SalesServer'; Note 1 to the table in the li...

3 parameters only needed
it's changed in recent versions then, that used to work

needs at least one more: Msg 15426, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_addlinkedserver, Line 23 [Batch Start Line 43]
You must specify a provider name with this set of properties.
I think there's probably a firewall issue in play here.

gbn
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'Sales',
@srvproduct = 'SQL Server'

EXEC sys.sp_setnetname
@server = 'Sales',
@netname = 'SomeOtherAddress'
I took that answer and split it

i'm not sure what @netname does
is that what gives it an alias?

gbn
Updates data_source
server_id name product provider data_source
1 Sales SQL Server SQLNCLI SomeOtherAddress
from sys.servers

2:17 PM
hmm. when I select * from sys.servers
the provider string is null

gbn
But sp_addlinkedserver would suggest that you only need

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
@server = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@provider=N'SQLNCLI',
@srvproduct = 'SQLNCLI',
@datasrc='tcp:0.0.0.0' --correct ip here
yes
not required for SQL Server or SQLNCLI
I ran this

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
@server = N'StupidlyLongServerName',
@provider=N'SQLNCLI',
@srvproduct = 'SQLNCLI',
@datasrc='SomeOtherAddress' --correct ip here
server_id name product provider data_source
1 Sales SQL Server SQLNCLI SomeOtherAddress
2 StupidlyLongServerName SQLNCLI SQLNCLI SomeOtherAddress
However, look at the flags. "SQL Server" has more default things set

cool
i'm gonna do some reading
and maybe go tell the security guy to turn off the goddamned firewall
what's it good for anyways?

@James preventing the spread of worms, for one.

gbn
See you in 30 minutes...

@gbn lol.

2:22 PM
let's not tempt fate shall we

I'm leaving the office shortly with a 45 min commute.

@MaxVernon Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing!

@jadarnel27 thanks for the feedback and for reading it.

No problem! I've never manually created stats objects, but I'll keep that limitation in the back of my mind now.
You're on my list now, Vernon.
3

@jadarnel27 cheers

2:38 PM
Hm. Comes across a bit threatening on the star board, eh?

@jadarnel27 The auto_create_statistics option should be left turned on in my opinion. The fact that it's turned off by default on almost all of our 2500+ databases makes me shake my head.
@jadarnel27 ohh yeah.

=)
@MaxVernon Yeah, I can't imagine turning it off. Especially on systems with the newer "persist sample rate" feature.

@jadarnel27 we have it turned off due to some problem with Sybase ASE back in 1972.
I'm kidding about the 1972 bit. It was actually 1974 :-)

Very cautious of you all.

now it's "policy", and that means it'll be that way until the heat-death of the universe.

2:42 PM
Changing that would never make it past the risk calculator spreadsheet and weekly steering committee meeting amirite?!

precisely

I'm assuming your corporate culture now. Not very welcoming.

trying to stear this ship is like trying to put lipstick on a pig. It makes the pig angry, and afterwards, it's still a pig.
3

Plus the pig might get ideas about your intentions.

@jadarnel27 lol.

2:49 PM
@jadarnel27 I was thinking of a joke with New Zealanders and sheep but that's not allowed any more

@MaxVernon That reminded me of this:

IS THERE A TICKET FOR THE ISSUE?

Sara knew she wasn’t being yelled at. **The entire mainframe team had pressed their caps lock keys once in 1972, and hadn’t touched them since**. Yeah- I’ll forward it to-
Standard DBA policy: when a change fixes something, you keep it that way. For ever.

Are object relational model and their commands in SQL used frequently or rarely in practice?
I heard that Object oriented model hasn't achieved success. So I I wonder about object-relational one.

@Tim Could you give an example of what you mean by object relational model commands?

8:17 PM
that lovely feel when you use a query hint in production to get the execution plan you want

@Tim How is defining complex types violating the relational model?

Tim
8:37 PM
That is beyond my question

@Tim that was an example in the page you linked.

Tim
I only think about my question

inheritance, defined types, GIS
i really don't understand clearly what people mean with "object-relational model"

Tim
I only ask if they are used frequently or rarely in practice

and my question what is that "they".
Oracle also has a whole bunch of things under the title "Objects" and "Object-Relational" but I've ni idea how common is their use

8:45 PM
New ERP is killing me...

9:11 PM
@Tim you may also be interested in The Third Manifesto
(That's mostly theory but there have been some implementations. Not that they got any widespread adoption, the database world has been mainly using SQL implemenetations.)

Tim
9:26 PM
Thanks. I currently only want to know if object relational commands in SQL are used frequently and worth learning.
