3:00 AM
wha
no
i'm in chicago for those dates to speak and teach
then i fly to pass from there

oh, around chicago
pretty unlikely
what are you teaching?

sql crap

I am on to the edit phase
and the "figure out how to format in wordpress" phase

3:16 AM
we use something called enlighter for code formatting
i have no idea if that's standard in wp
have you ever seen this in tf 2363 output?
*** WARNING: badly-formed histogram ***

3:35 AM
yes
I don't know what it means
let me look up a theory that someone had
actually I don't even have speculation on that
ok
the first post is up
the formatting... needs work
I think it's readable if you really want to look at it
I'll see if there are any easy fixes I can make tonight

"For this demo it’s not important that the UDF do anything so I must made "

fixed
the images are pretty brutal right now, trying to fix itr

are you aligning them?

allegedly

do no alignment
that's how mine don't look like crap
did you disable comments?

3:48 AM
not intentionally
what are you seeing?

weird, i hit refresh and the comment pane showed up

the horizontal space is bizarre
I wonder if the problem is with the theme or something

could be -- some themes freak out when images are too large
i think with ours the pixels top out at like 600 width

fixed images
still no width
hmmm

it looks lined up now
i'm cracking up at this function question you linked to

4:02 AM
how so?

the function definition
i've never seen someone create a table variable inside a scalar udf

oh yeah
that was a good one

i might steal that for a bad idea jeans post

I thought it was a nice solution to get a CPU expensive operation

by steal i mean giv eyou credit

4:03 AM
feel free
I think I fixed the images and the scrolling
but still hate how the site works
would you say that it's readable now?

readable yeah, but you might want to do a couple things
add in some headers to separate logical chunks
and space the text and pictures out a little so it's not all "wall of stuff"
you should be able to do headers in the text editor with just like <h3>blah</h3>
(this was all editorial stuff i got barraged with when i started blogging, too)

yeah it's a combination of not knowing the stuff
and not knowing the tools
should be a little better now

that's a million times better

it ate my > and <...

holy cow, i used that to stack my two demo functions, the estimated plan is hilarious
looks like the formatting is good on the code now
nice
i have subscribed to your rss feed

4:26 AM
I don't have a comment to approve yet

you should
Duplicate comment detected; it looks as though you’ve already said that!
i wonder if posting NULL messed something up
heh

you got flagged as spam
wait, that's all you said?
DENIED

i'll remember that
unsubscribes
I NO LONGER CARE FOR YOUR NEWSLETTER, SIR

if you post a complete sentence it's likely I'll approve it
that's how low the bar is
maybe I'll get a comment from Paul full of corrections
then I'll know that I made it

there you go.
punctuation and everything.

4:36 AM
well I got an email

success
first time for everything

so did you actually read the thing?

yes. i got a bit sidetracked by switching to the question you linked to and then testing stacking functions, but i eventually made it to the end.
i nodded along with the top percent line

was it useless?

the post?

4:41 AM
yes

not at all

you'll be a tough nut to crack then
all of these themes appear to have articles that are 80 characters wide
maybe it's some kind of mobile silliness?

ooh, one small thing: you talk about the legacy CE, and then in some parts reference 'changing the CE' -- that might confuse people if they think certain code might change the cardinality estimator and not just the estimate

I like to think that we moved past the days of the 80 character terminals
good poitn
I'm out, thanks for the feedback

anytime

@PaulWhite Nice

I'm fed up with having low quality CW answers on my profile hence sock
As soon as it gets 10 rep it will be able to CW its own answers

Will you eventually delete the OP's comment?

Thanks had forgotten :)

@PaulWhite perhaps a feature request? "Option to disassociate a CW post completely from my profile"?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Yeah. I did think about that a while ago but didn't do it after searching meta. Can't remember why!
It is possible to disassociate posts already but it's a manual process.
Plus I've always wanted a sock.
The site looks very different from a non-mod 10 rep account.

6:47 AM
@PaulWhite Must have been a long time ago?

Morning

@hot2use For my main account? Yes. I don't even remember joining, much less what the site looked like when I did.
morning

Morning

@PaulWhite Not that much different
From 2012-01-03

I mean the adverts and different menu options
Oh I see yeah right thanks

7:10 AM
@PaulWhite Where you SQL Kiwi back then?
must be a fake account. Only 589 points

@hot2use yes!

7:27 AM
I think the change to the real name was shortly before the last mod election

Is there a collection/list of blogs that anybody could recommend?
Seeing as @JoeObbish started blogging, I was wondering who else does?
@PaulWhite is on SQLPerformance, @sp_BlitzErik is on Brent's site, ....

SQLPerformance also hosts blog posts by other DBA.SE users.

Q: How to follow up on answer with updated code?

Sejal Parikh I have a question about my Database Administrators Stack Exchange post: Using NEXT clause to set periodic materilized view refresh in oracle and verifying refresh If I want to follow up on my answer with my code, and ask about errors, how do I do that? @JackDouglas you around?

1:37 PM
@Forrest Paul posted an answer to that CCI question that we discussed last week
3
A: Why can it take up to 30 seconds to create a simple CCI rowgroup?

Paul WhiteIn many respects, this is expected behaviour. Any set of compression routines will have widely ranging performance depending on input data distribution. We expect to trade data loading speed for storage size and runtime querying performance. There is a definite limit to how detailed an answer yo...

@JoeObbish Already upvoted :)
Though now I'm even more convinced I need to learn about debuggers. And Windows Performance Analyzer.

Q: How to convert the ,with table_name of sql in to mysql

AksI am new in mysql and I am migrating my SQL server databae to mysql. I have written the following store procedure and am getting the error: Error Code: 1064. You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '...

Vote to close as too localized or unclear or tip of the iceberg?

@Forrest same. heh.

remember, it's not as glamorous as it looks!

pfft
i don't want glamour
i want that sweet black magic

2:37 PM
@dezso yes, what's up?
@McNets I have no idea! Do you get an error message when you try to create one? I'm not sure they make much sense in a disposable database

@JackDouglas Yes, I have no permission. Thank you, but I finally deleted my answer.

which DDL trigger out of curiosity?

Let me try to recover it
@JackDouglas
CREATE TRIGGER [LogTableChanges]
ON ALL SERVER
FOR CREATE_TABLE, DROP_TABLE, ALTER_TABLE
AS
DECLARE @message_body XML
SET @message_body = EVENTDATA()

INSERT INTO test.dbo.MyChangeLog(vcEventType, dtEventTime, vcServerName, vcLoginName
, vcUserName, vcObjectName, vcObjectType, vcSQL)
VALUES (@message_body.value('(/EVENT_INSTANCE/EventType)[1]', 'varchar(128)'),
GETUTCDATE(),
@message_body.value('(/EVENT_INSTANCE/ServerName)[1]','varchar(128)'),
@message_body.value('(/EVENT_INSTANCE/LoginName)[1]', 'varchar(128)'),

2:55 PM
can you create DDL triggers just within the current database rather that ON ALL SERVER?
ie use ON DATABASE?

@JackDouglas No, I tried before, same error

1 hour later…
4:21 PM
@JackDouglas a flag on this: dba.stackexchange.com/a/176447/6219

@dezso what do you flag that as?

thanks, it's gone

5:00 PM
@sp_BlitzErik NAA-suspect and the copyright issue

word
we need more flagging options

@sp_BlitzErik the custom flag seems enough. There you can also post compliments to mods.

never had that
bet Paul has :p
@McNets if you tell me exactly which permission I need to add, I'll tweak the script

5:17 PM
just did a presentation on stats
think I nailed it, not sure

Another Friday presentation for the devs at your company?

now that you mention it I did do another one
but I can't remember anything about it
hmm
oh well
this wasn't quite for devs

Not in your memory anymore? You must have restarted since then.
@JoeObbish Who was the target audience?

5:33 PM
technical folks in customer-facing roles

Ooooh, interesting crowd. What did you want them to know about stats?

I can pass along a slightly censored version of the slide deck if you like
just need somewhere to put it

Would love to look at it

although it's not really worthy of the name "slide deck" :)
how to pass it along?

Ok with emailing it?

5:39 PM
yeah, got the file size down to 500 KB
I'll convert it to binary and put it on dba se fiddle

thank you

sent
not sure how useful it will be
I don't like putting text on slides
or decorating them

Meh, I still like seeing how other people frame topics

let me know what you think

@Forrest personally I really like a nice dark mahogany frame.

5:48 PM
I was baking something the other day
was supposed to take it out of the oven when it was the color of maple wood
?????
I even googled it and it was completely unhelpful

lol

not if you're a maple syrup maker, I guess.

says the Canadian

Google image search of maple wood shows its light color

I got a bunch of different colors

5:51 PM
I guess you could say a very light tan

6:04 PM
Just finished looking over slides. It's obviously tip-of-the-iceberg info on a big topic, but I think your main points stand out well. Assuming your main points are 1. How stats basically work 2. Why they matter 3. People should actually think about what they do
Thanks for passing them over! I enjoyed reading them.

2 hours later…
7:45 PM
@JoeObbish reading stuff like that really doesn't help my imposter syndrome.

8:03 PM
Thanks Forrest, glad you enjoyed them
yep, that's pretty much it
@MaxVernon you have lots of great answers and obviously the community thinks so too
for me it's different in that I enjoy the experience
"that's how far I have to go"

@JoeObbish what were you baking?

9:11 PM
@sp_BlitzErik raspberry crumb bars

9:59 PM
@JackDouglas To create a DDL trigger with server scope (ON ALL SERVER) or a logon trigger requires CONTROL SERVER permission on the server. To create a DDL trigger with database scope (ON DATABASE) requires ALTER ANY DATABASE DDL TRIGGER permission in the current database.

10:58 PM
@JoeObbish thanks - Paul seriously takes it to another level though, doesn't he?
