VéraceI created a table called "billy". mysql> SELECT * FROM billy ORDER BY f1; +----------+-------+ | f1 | f2 | +----------+-------+ | soho10 | test5 | | soho12 | test1 | | soho123 | test2 | | soho1234 | test4 | | soho222 | test3 | +----------+-------+ 5 rows in set (0.00 sec) which ...

I Love you !!!! thanx alot :D — Kazi Lotus 1 hour ago
Nice work @Vérace. Not sure I love you though.

@PaulWhite I did tell him not to get carried away! :-)

@AaronBertrand xkcd.com/936 that's the one that got me thinking
why not use phrases such as "Time to learn something about databases again" for dba.se or "Are you going to buy stuff you don't really need again" for ebay
hard to crack, easy to remember

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells did you get that from @bluefeet or was it the other way around?

@Zane I stole it from here. So thanks @ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells :)

<--- seem to be having network problems on my server.
Time to do some serious digging.
Also unrelated statistics problems.
Getting vastly different and more terrible query plans on my prod box.

5:17 PM
I'm also having mysterious network-related issues today
Solar flares?

we had storage crap the bed last night
i vaguely recall someone blogging about reading the windows errorlog with sp_readerrorlog
anyone ever see/do that?

hm. no ... it was much more "hacky" than that (unless my brain isnt comprehending correctly which is possible given the night i had last night). basically coaxing sp_readerrorlog into reading the windows event log. it's just a vague recollection and so far my googling is saying "you so cray"

oh sorry I missed a key word there

in fairness, i called it the incorrect thing

5:27 PM
I assume there is a way, because:

indeed. i traced it. seems to be external code.

I didn't trace to see what that calls; I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader. :-)

5:49 PM
Sorry I can't be more help. Why do you need to do this from SQL Server?

@AaronBertrand it's fine. i'm just picking through errorlogs and event files to piece together a timeline of what happened to our storage last night
was hoping to query, sort, and filter easily

And that was not being judgy. I've done many things from SQL Server that I should have done elsewhere.
Can't Powershell query, sort, filter, brush your teeth, and remind you to buy flowers for your mom on Mother's Day?

@AaronBertrand i didnt take it as judgy. and yeah, powershell may have a one-liner for me but i just ... sigh ... i just didnt think of it
soo ... in unrelated news ... allen white, eh? sqlsentry is becoming the yankees of the sql server vendor market, eh? stockpiling mvps and such ;)

Pretty much :-)

2015 Community Moderator Election
ends in 2 hours

6:09 PM
@ypercube youtube.com/watch?v=TDSIknQK9V4 When will the result be out? Instantaneous? Might even wait up!

@swasheck That's what I'm seeing today. A cluster node has a (roughly) fixed extra 200 ms read and write latency over iSCSI. Failover to the other node, the latencies drop. Workloads, driver versions, Windows and NIC settings, iSCSI & mpio configuration are identical.

@JamesLupolt we inexplicably lost our log somehow. no indication in the events/errorlog at all.
instantaneously gone. but instantaneously returned.
writes and backups failed ... that's how we learned of it
otherwise the db was "available" ... de facto "read-only" mode without being suspect/read only/in recovery

@swasheck Is this on Pure?

yep
Fibre
oddly, enough ... 3 dbs have their logs on this volume and this only affected 1 db

Odd
What error were writes failing with?

6:14 PM
The log for database 'FUBAR' is not available. Check the event log for related error messages. Resolve any errors and restart the database.

Hate it when that happens

@Vérace I think so. It takes little time for the voted to be processed.

@JamesLupolt it was in an AG and so it failed over but things were still borked because it wouldnt sync. we had to restart the DB
(as it said) ... but now we're trying to figure out what happened

6:28 PM
@JamesLupolt all the research i've done leads to the autoclose option --- but autoclose is disabled

6:43 PM
@swasheck And aside from that message, there's nothing relevant in the logs (app, sql, system, cluster) at all?

7:16 PM
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Maybe you should take the drives out, blow on the connectors and put them back in

silly @billinkc that only worked for video game cartridges

@bluefeet GIVE IT A TRY

@billinkc this was too disturbing to post in here but - imgfave-herokuapp-com.global.ssl.fastly.net/image_cache/…

I feel oNare is Rolando's protégé

This is the crap I see in parking lots all the time. People are stupid, jerks, or both. http://t.co/GsTvX9XX18
^--- happened at lunch. The idiot who did this yelled at someone who "cut her off" as she sped between parked cars to get a precious spot closer to the gym

"the gym"
This amuses me, greatly

@ypercube Harsh!
@billinkc Yes you'd think they'd want to park further away to get more exercise.

Assume I linked the escalators going to the gym with unused stairs picture
Exactly PW!
(which would be pronounced P-dubs)

Yay! I got something without it being explained in painful detail via a Wikipedia link.

7:46 PM
Pity you won't be at Summit, I'd see how many people I could get to call you that

That does sound like great fun :)

I'll see what the translation to Elvish is so the hobbits down yonder can call you the equivalent

And of course someone argues that there's nothing wrong with it and they do it all the time to save a few seconds. I wonder if getting punched in the throat is worth those few seconds

@billinkc I guess I should be pleased you dropped the Aussie references.
@AaronBertrand I'll never understand what it is about car parks that turns otherwise reasonable people into angry nutcases.

P-Dubs - we're getting down to the short strokes here. 10 minutes remain!

7:49 PM
@PaulWhite You'll be telling your wife all about how today was special because I spoke to you

@PaulWhite ouch

Ouch?
@billinkc I was just doing that!

I do get angry when people do idiotic and dangerous things to park 5 feet closer to something. But I am not a nutcase. :-)
T-9 minutes

@AaronBertrand Ah, no, you misunderstood me. I was referring to the people that do the stupid, jerky stuff in the first place.

@PaulWhite phew :)

7:50 PM
How exciting. Isn't it exciting?

yes, yes, yes.

I was bout to leave pc but I guess I can wait for 20 mins

The suspense is terrible. I hope it will last

yup

it seems like 10,000 hours, not 10 minutes.
<-- listening to 10,000 hours right now.
so, yes! @billinkc
someone should wakeup @kin for the festivities!

7:54 PM
Why ping @kin when you can super-ping @@kin

super-ping???

We should all super-ping @@Kin

If I delete that, I wonder if they'll still get the ping and what what happened

What what? Do they speak English in what what?

welcome @Undo ! we've been waiting for you!

7:55 PM
A regular ping only works if they've been in the room recently

ahhh

Does superping work really?

We'll find out if Kin appears

@ypercube only works for moderators

also depends on packet size

7:56 PM
if you put three @'s in does the world implode?

boohoo

@Undo only for pinging mods? Or mods can ping anyone? Or both?

Mods can superping anyone

thnx

7:57 PM

Mods are only monkeys with guns
Pity jcolebrand isn't here to appreciate it

Okay, I'm going to test the bot thing. Hold on.

yup!

And bananas.

yay

Congrats, well deserved two and the other

Okay, we're ready.
Results will be posted here (Heap) first, and in the election room second.

congrats, @PaulWhite !

I'm just happy that my vote recipients finished in the top five

Is it official or was @Undo just messing with bots?

It's not polite to mention @Undos fetish with the bots

@PaulWhite not with that landslide!

congrats @PaulWhite

@JamesLupolt none whatsoever

@PaulWhite seem official. Congrats!

and we can keep calling you p-dubs

@billinkc Mmmmmm vegemite ..

8:20 PM
@ypercube Ha!

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells the australlian flavour

@billinkc There's some other kind?
I think they made something similar in England, didn't they?

I thought there the NZ and an AUS version of it and one is superior based upon the land of your birth
Sorry, marmite vs vegemite

@PaulWhite Not official per se, but it's never been wrong.

I hang my head in ignorance of your culture

8:23 PM
It's an advantage that we now have a mod in the future

I want to tell @billinkc he's right, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

@PaulWhite People tell me I'm number one every day

@MaxVernon @Kin I wonder how many people read the Q & A and did research, and how many simply went with the "candidate score". Not sure I'm a fan of that. In all honesty, I was half expecting Max to win, so I'm a little taken aback by the numbers.

@billinkc i tend to think of you more like #2

OK, taxonomy of yeast extracts:
o Marmite (UK) - made from tailings from the Guiness factory
o Marmite (NZ) - made in Christchurch by a bunch of Seventh Day Adventists known as Sanitarium. Damage to the factory in Christchurch caused the great New Zealand Marmite shortage. Sweeter and less bitter than the UK version
o Vegemite (AUS) - nectar of the gods.
o Promite (AUS) - knockoff of Vegemite
o Aussiemite (AUS) - knockoff of Vegemite
o Cenovis (SWI) - Yeast extract found on the continent. Comes in green tubes.

8:25 PM
@PaulWhite it's a good question.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells The important thing is: can I make hootch out of marmite as well as I can from vegemite

I'm a little disappointed the results weren't more exciting, like with multiple rounds of 'exhausted' and STVs and stuff that we could pick the bones out of for years to come.

@PaulWhite I must admit my ego did get a tiny little bit smaller once I saw the gap. Anyway, clearly you're a fantastic candidate, and I don't doubt for one minute that you'll make an incredible moderator. Congratulations again!

@billinkc They're both pretty salty.

@MaxVernon We should hack the results to more accurately reflect reality. Perhaps in future only Heapsters should have a vote :-D

8:27 PM
@PaulWhite lol!

@MaxVernon I'll certainly give it a good go. If I suck at it, I can always resign and we can have all this fun over again.
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I have to confess I prefer Our Mate (the UK version in NZ for others).
I can say all this now the election is over :)

@billinkc o_O - they do realise that the yeast is actually dead by the time it gets anywhere near a marmite jar.

@PaulWhite I can't wait till next time. It was really kinda fun!
@PaulWhite I wonder how long till the results are "official", and you get your diamond.

@PaulWhite I find UK marmite a little bitter. I don't mind it but I prefer the salty goodness of Vegemite.

8:29 PM
Yes. I do wish two mod spots had been available though. Feel a little flat about it at the moment.
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Ug. Vegemite. Ug ug ug :)
@MaxVernon I get a real one by post, yes?

@PaulWhite one should certainly hope so!

@PaulWhite Next you'll be telling me you support those dancing rugby players or something ...

Ha ha ha ha ha!

@PaulWhite and one would certainly hope you'd get a diamond DBA.SE T-Shirt

Ooo!

8:32 PM
@MaxVernon I've had quite a few SE T-shirts and they don't make them big enough for me. :(

@MaxVernon the gap is only in the 1st vote-spot. You got 343 votes overall (for 1-2-3 place).

@ypercube yah, I'm looking at the data right now :-)

And congrats to all the other 3 candidates; @MaxVernon @Kin. @ShawnMelton

@ypercube thanks!

Kin
@ypercube first time stood up for any mod election .. I love this community and people over here ... thats why spend a good chunk of my time here :-)

@ypercube Great observation.

Kin
@ypercube how do you get the stats ?
just curious

@Kin download the election data from dba.stackexchange.com/election/4

It's a reflection of site growth that almost twice as many people were eligible to vote this time compared with the 2013 election.

Two of you so far ;)

@PaulWhite thnx for the comment in that mysql question. Rolando's answer and EXPLAIN was confusing me.
it must be a blind spot in mysql's optimizer because I've seen indexes used in similar queries.

No worries, it was an interesting discussion to watch.
2
A: How can I force MySQL to IGNORE ALL indexes?

ypercubeIt's absolutely not clear why you want this but you can use the hint USE INDEX () to tell the optimizer not to use any index. From MySQL docs: index hints It is syntactically valid to omit index_list for USE INDEX, which means “use no indexes.” Omitting index_list for FORCE INDEX or IGNORE IN...

@PaulWhite Now the OP is driving me crazy.
Bacause the whole data do not fit into RAM (in this case index does). Traversing index is expensive, because it is tree, not flat sequential data as with table-scan. Try it yourself on 100M+ rows table. — Mvorisek 3 mins ago
I. must. not. answer. mysql. questions. never. again.

9:18 PM

It's faster for me to pull all the data into my database layer and perform filtering there because IOPS

@ypercube What's that song from Frozen again? ;)

I can't remember now

@ypercube and the classic:
needless to say, I'm not clicking that link!

@MaxVernon that's automated you know

9:28 PM
@ypercube only if you accept the "would you like to move this to chat" question
I was simply making the point that the OP would like to continue to discussing why an index is slower than scanning the table.... lolololol.

ahhhhh so glad I can decide to downvote stupid MySQL questions.

@MaxVernon when I'm nervous about what I might be in for, I right-click -> open in new incognito/private window

Q: Why is dba.stackexchange so...welcoming?

FuriousFolderPerhaps this is but my first impression of DBA, but it's surely a pleasant one. I recently asked a fairly basic question about Postgres's indexing abilities. I was greeted with AMAZINGLY cordial and thoughtful answers, that not only addressed my question, but did so without making me feel like a...
