7:03 PM
@jcolebrand i work at a prop shop

@FreshPrinceOfSO a) a what? b) you couldn't use any of the ten thousand notepad style sites on the internet?

Btw, this is after I formatted it

oh wow

@jcolebrand just started using github over the weekend

7:04 PM
that is awful

@FreshPrinceOfSO If hate were people, I'd be China working with that

DateA, DateS, TimeA, TimeS, FeckU, YRead, IntentWhat
Please tell me this was not hand crafted

My senior DBA recommended I just replace the entire query with SELECT 'NO';

And doubly so by a "brilliant developer"
oh god, the joins
Scorched earth. That will give the best results here

JNK
wowzers

7:08 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO are there like 6 layers of subqueries in that?

@bluefeet what's more, I think with the proper names we could all come up with good suggestions on how to try rewrites :D

i wish I could +100 this

Q: Comments on moderator nomination statements should be visible in all stages of the election

Brad LarsonDuring the nomination phase, members of the community can comment on the nomination statements for each candidate. This can provide valuable information about how the community regards these candidates, as well as specific positive and negative points that go beyond the metrics displayed. There i...

It would also be interesting, IMHO, to highlight meta questions asked by candidates during this phase, as that, too, can provide valuable information to voters. :-) — Aaron Bertrand 6 secs ago
Not to name any names or cite any examples.

JNK
7:29 PM
I may have asked this before, but does anyone here have experience with SQL Test or tSQLt?
hey I did ask it before, back in August

Glad I chose Friday as my "work from home" day
Holy moly ... 57 shots? You crazy, Canada

And only won 2-1 - that was closer than I would have liked
Finally got a real shipping notification for my computer! It arrives Monday

is the us men's team the denver broncos of international hockey?

@swasheck it was in Vancouver
They actually played really well, and are even stronger this year.
They have a very good chance at gold, but they have to get past us first.
I think they'll win their game after the Canada game. So they will either have gold or bronze.

it seems like they have defensive lapses during which the goalie must stand on his head to bail them out

7:37 PM
All teams have that issue from time to time though. Happened to Canada against Latvia today.

true

@AaronBertrand bo cough hem cough ian

I almost went so far as saying "including deleted questions" because that one is by far the most telling.

@BradLarson Candidates that don't answer the questionnaire should also be auto-dropped from the nomination. — FreshPrinceOfSO 27 secs ago

But the lack of an answer to the questionnaire could definitely be considered a preview of what kind of effort he will give to the job. He probably figures he doesn't have to answer the questionnaire because his votes will carry him. I think the questionnaire should be mandatory.

7:39 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO harsh

Thank you so much.
@bluefeet truth hurts. I'm on the same boat as Aaron on the feeling that his votes are carrying him

his vote escalation is crazy - projects.wncc-iitb.org/jsonelections.html

@bluefeet meh, seems a reasonable requirement

As far as I'm concerned, instead of a nomination summary, the candidate's nomination should be strictly based on the responses to a questionnaire. — FreshPrinceOfSO 26 secs ago

@FreshPrinceOfSO won't happen people are so impacted by the primary voting now

7:52 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO that's a wise man/woman

@Lamak He is of the male gender.

then that's a wise person of the male gender

@AndriyM INTERSECT is the complement of EXCEPT, and there are cases where you might want to use the opposite one by flipping your EXISTS clause to NOT EXISTS (or vice versa).

@FreshPrinceOfSO well, I don't think anyone would learn bluefeet's real name from the questionnaire, for example. — Aaron Bertrand 13 secs ago

@AaronBertrand hey now no bringing me into this! :)

8:04 PM
@AaronBertrand lol.
Completely irrelevant for a mod election

I know. I was going to make a joke that nobody would have learned she was a she but thought I'd try to keep the gender discussion stable.

I still think the nomination summary allows the asker to say anything about themselves, and why they are running, that the questionnaire may not cover and that voters may not ask directly.
Whether you, specifically, don't find any value in that? shrug

I think more weight should be placed on the answers to the questionnaire

maybe I should change my name to pinkfeet and then people will assume I'm female

8:07 PM
@bluefeet that will just confuse people

@ErikE It's interesting that you've brought that example because that's what I had in mind when saying that I couldn't see much use for INTERSECT ALL.

anyone have any good articles on replication?
@FreshPrinceOfSO @AaronBertrand they added links on the nomination page to the candidates answers

@bluefeet that's super helpful
... 2 days into it
they should restart the primary

@FreshPrinceOfSO the real voting hasn't started yet.

@bluefeet what are you trying to do?

8:15 PM
@swasheck read about it, I have zero experience

@Shog9 nothing is real man.. it's all a dream

it's @Shog9 what did we do to deserve a visit?

@swasheck obviously, the only way this election will work is if all three winners are bluefeet.
@bluefeet blame that guy who pinged me yesterday

@Shog9 erm ... we're talking about sql server replication right now :)

@swasheck I like my interpretation better

8:16 PM
@Shog9 nonetheless ... tin cup is a modest alternative (more rye bourbon than stran's) to stranahan's ... at less than half the price

@Shog9 we always blame him

@Shog9 having said that ... i approve of this

@bluefeet he secretly loves us

@Shog9 well unless I can clone myself I don't think that is possible
@swasheck thats the one I have been going through

well, you have 2 feet

8:18 PM
@bluefeet but i used it a lot at my last place. it's awesome when you get it working, but getting to that point is absolutely crazymaking

@Shog9 what a jerk

@bluefeet keep it that way. Replication sucks.

@AaronBertrand IIRC, her new employer uses it heavily. michael has asked a lot about it

sad trombone

but yeah ... push for availability groups :)

JNK
8:25 PM
I have broken replication a couple of times here

@FreshPrinceOfSO well, this comment might mean that you'll get to see the answers to the questionnaire you were waiting for

@JNK that's not hard. did you fart in the data center?

@ypercube what questionnaire? — Bohemian 10 mins ago

@swasheck we do use it and I need to get up to speed on it since I have lack of exposure

Maybe a changing of the guard can foster a change to something better (even mirroring is better)

JNK
8:25 PM
@AaronBertrand did I ever tell you I found out why my DBA believed that stuff needed to be in an explicit transaction to replicate?

@AaronBertrand yikes. we use it

I was involved in a system that used replication once.

Once.

@JNK no

@Lamak step in the right direction

JNK
So he told me that when I started and I thought it sounded like BS

8:26 PM
@bluefeet yeah. i know.

JNK
It turns out if you add columns to a table referenced in a view that uses SELECT * and run an sp_refreshview OUTSIDE a transaction the view definition does not get replicated to include the new columns
I told him my solution was not to use SELECT * in a frigging view

@JNK huh, not many people would know that, because doing that is stupid

@JNK I remember when that happened

JNK
@AaronBertrand exactement
It's akin to "Did you know that if you hold sparklers while doused in motor oil you have to hold your arms WAY OUT?"

@JNK If that's still true, I would find it hard to believe it's not a product bug.

JNK
8:28 PM
@PaulWhite It makes sense to me because the sys.columns is not in replication :)
if we were replicating sys.columns as an article I think it would have gone across
but it's a metadata change
It's still a product of stupidity
I just broke a web devs brain with a recursive CTE

@JNK Nevertheless. If it works inside an explicit transaction, it ought to work inside an auto-commit transaction.

JNK
@PaulWhite actually let me see what they use for that, they wrote some proc for this apparently
it's a common enough issue in my environment to have SELECT * in a view...

@JNK You know how to cure that, right?

JNK
@billinkc do tell

Someone's going to say use sp_refreshsqlmodule instead. Might as well be me at this point.

8:31 PM
alter table ? ADD BoomGoesTheDynamite AS (SELECT 1/0)

@JNK it starts by borrowing @AaronBertrand's ruler

JNK
huh they don't do it in a transaction

Computed column with a divide by zero. Doesn't get evaluated unless you access the column. Don't select * and you'll be fine

JNK
it just runs sp_refreshview in a cursor
wtf
I'm surrounded by incompetents

I thought you worked solo?

JNK
8:33 PM
lol

@JNK hey, come on....there are some competent people here...and then there's @billinkc and me

JNK
Legacy code

That's the wrong legacy

@Lamak Damn straight. Cross-America Five

JNK
oh lord

8:34 PM
@JNK *illegal-acy code

JNK
I don't think this ever worked
I have never seen the explicit transaction thing work, and there IS NO transaction in the thing they told me to use

@JNK tell your developers that the entirety of The Heap is currently mocking them mercilessly. shame them into submission

JNK
it's just a cursor that builds dyn sql to sp_refreshview for all views
@swasheck well its only me now
developer wise

is in mock mode
mock mock mock

JNK
8:36 PM
oh no
I've been kiwi-mocked

:-)

JNK
Mocked by an austrian!

Not you, your developers

JNK
ducks

@JNK Flagged

JNK
8:36 PM
oh that's better
fixed

JNK
now I'm super confused about how this crap ever worked

I didn't really flag it. But seriously, fair warning, next time...!

JNK
My solution was just to run the refresh on the other side
understood
I know you guys are touchy about that
If I learned ONE THING from Flight of the Conchords it's that Kiwis don't like being confused with Aussies

@JNK wouldn't those be australians?

8:39 PM
And how to pronounce Brett (Brit)

ha ha

JNK
@AaronBertrand yeah that too
I always say it like that

@JNK i learned how to announce that it's business time

It's not quite "brit". You have to get (git) halfway between the two. Easy. We do it all the time.

"I know what you're trying to say, you're trying to say it's time for business, it's business time. Yeah!"

JNK
8:40 PM
@Lamak yes

@PaulWhite ha, so actually "deck" is spelled like "di.." :D

JNK
"These are my business socks..."

@JNK oh, sorry, I got confused since you said "austrians"

JNK
@Lamak It said australians but I edited it because Paul threatened me with a flag

"is that all?"

8:41 PM
@JNK damn....I was too slow to see that

JNK
@Lamak he threatened me pretty fast

Vertica's version of IDENTITY: a seqeunce

That's standard

SQL Server has sequence now too, and Oracle has had it forever

@FreshPrinceOfSO that's also Oracle's identity :), listen to the master ^^^

8:44 PM
I retract hat statement; It has all 3: identity, auto_increment, and sequence

Doesn't appear to allow you to specify the data type like sql server does.

This is kinda cool
CREATE TABLE test2 (id INTEGER NOT NULL UNIQUE,
        middle INTEGER DEFAULT NEXTVAL('my_seq'), next INT, last auto_increment);

@FreshPrinceOfSO Vertica seems to have ... an IDENTITY crisis
3
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

@swasheck Terribad.
A star for you

@swasheck i dont understand the reference

8:46 PM
Oh my gosh that was awful
CSI Miami

i watched season 1
that'll do pig

You watched too much

@AaronBertrand clearly

I watched season -Infinity; a valid value for float .. and so is NaN

8:50 PM
This seems helpful, with a video example for anyone interested dialectblog.com/2011/04/19/new-zealand-accents

@AndriyM You're right: inside an EXISTS clause, the ALL versions are meaningless. I wasn't thinking. :) However, you can still use INTERSECT in its own clause with an EXCEPT outside it (for example). (A) EXCEPT (B INTERSECT C)

@swasheck Couldn't watch more than 22 seconds

@FreshPrinceOfSO just for the sake of the reference

worst. reference. today.

@ErikE I upvoted your suggestion, for completeness of the language if nothing else. There's no real reason to require users to write row-number queries when they need the ALL versions.

8:57 PM
@PaulWhite Thanks, Paul!

9:29 PM
@PaulWhite @ErikE I tried to find it through the chat, through Google, and directly on Connect, but could not find it. It's possible I've already up-voted, but in case it's not, could you share the URL or Connect #?

Sigh :)

Jinx
Searching is hard. I'm going shopping.

@AaronBertrand Have fun. Exciting to hear the new machine finally arrives Monday.

9:31 PM
OWE ME A SODA!!!!!

@swasheck uh, I'm old enough for beer, wuss

road soda

@PaulWhite oh me too. I'm kind of hoping UPS messes up and brings it Friday instead.]

Never happens :)

my experience is they're either late or on-time (with the latest possible time). maybe that's just my luck, though

9:34 PM
No that's my experience too. There's always hope, though

wow. microsoft is really pushing onedrive with all kinds of free storage

9:49 PM
@AaronBertrand Sorry we are unable to view this link, can we help at all?
WebSense probably prevented their developers from reading about how they were storing passwords like jackasses too.

@swasheck Well, you get all kinds of free storage at Google Drive as is.

@MikeFal yeah. i know.

Reminds me of when everyone on earth was using Netscape. Man did IE suddenly get crammed down our throats.

@MikeFal onedrive has given me 120GB whereas i get 15GB from teh googlez

9:56 PM
@swasheck Ok, that's significant

Do you have more than 15GB you need to put in the cloud?
I find an external drive, in a fireproof safe, is much more convenient, even when I'm on decent broadband.

@AaronBertrand not yet.
@AaronBertrand that's probably true

The cloud will be convenient once I have gigabit connectivity no matter where I am. Until then, it is more of an impediment in most cases.
It's good to have a backup, but I'd struggle to find 120 GB that I absolutely need to upload.

And that's not enough space to hold a quality porn collection
Guess it's time to start assembling a couple submissions for the Summit

@MikeFal you should do one on building a porn inventory solution

10:03 PM
@AaronBertrand Hosted in Azure, of course

@MikeFal no, Azure doesn't support Filestream. And this seems like an important feature.

Pointers to Azure blob storage?
Oh joy, we have our first "DevOps" based team
Do they even know what this means?

@AaronBertrand absolutely. i put more archive stuff from a former life up there in case i ever need it. it's not something that i use a lot
@MikeFal what're you going to submit?

@swasheck Intro to NoSQL, Automating restore testing w/PoSH, and probably my Log File Obesity

nice

10:19 PM
Because porn

10:42 PM
a horse with no name! what?! its name is horse by default! — Timmerz 8 mins ago
Odd

11:16 PM
@PaulWhite are you around?

11:37 PM
$16 billion :s

11:57 PM
@Phil Yeah clearly I should've gone for mobile dev instead of database work, sheeit.
