@Philᵀᴹ that's better for vlogging indeed

NAA or bad A?
https://dba.stackexchange.com/a/246354/68127

11:55 AM
@PeterVandivier NAA for me

my opinion as well but wanted to ask after last time
for 👋 New Contributors I'd rather VTC w/o a downvote if possible to minimise the "feeling like a moron" factor
but if it meets the bar for "answer", then it sure as shit gets a downvote

@PeterVandivier Did you read the latest post on that whole thing? New contributers, the comment system etc

possibly? sounds familiar 🤔 (re)link me?

Delivering improved, private feedback to post authors

Not putting users who curate content on the spot

Giving actionable, understandable information for the vast majority of public viewers

Better distinguishing the “Answer” and “Comment” actions (due to a high volume of helpful “Not an answer” flags indicating problems with the interface).

Ways to reduce the number of unhelpful comments that are likely to get removed in the first place.

Upfront guidance for first-time question-askers

Setting expectations for what happens after asking a question …

ah yes - "blue good, yellow bad"

11:59 AM
Yeah lol

@PeterVandivier NAA IMO

Maybe (and I feel I may invoke the wrath of Paul here) it would be an idea to force a comment if a new contributers post is down voted

What

I'm advocating for more comments for new users
IE if someones new, maybe instead of a downvote they should get a downvote and an explanation of that downvote

12:04 PM
@PeterVandivier how do you find that stuff so quickly man
Do you have the transcript uploaded into your brain every night

It's certainly can be helpful to comment on a new user's post, but it would be a mistake to try to force such a thing. Comments are already largely nonsense enough without requiring someone to type "I had to leave this comment".

@George.Palacios look up there

@PaulWhite hah yeah I can see it now. "Downvoted because post is bad"

Votes (up and down) are useful feedback and especially useful to new users. Brand new users have the advantage of downvotes not affecting their rep.

12:07 PM
@PeterVandivier Ah yeah. I can see it now. The Image not found

Besides, one could leave a comment (required by the downvote) then immediately delete it. I don't think the idea is workable, though I understand the motivation.

@PeterVandivier Ohhh you mean search?
@PaulWhite Yeah that's a fair point. I'd never realised that new users don't get their rep dropped for down votes actually

We are receiving emails, they somehow end up into a sql table, no clue what's is in the middle...

worse thing is that whatever the process is, stopped working and I am looking into finding out the process before fixing it
where to start ?

                                                                                  `.
                                                                               ``..`
                                                                            `....`
                         .:+ooo+//-`                                      `----:-`
                       :smNNmmmNNNmds:`                                  `---/+:-:`
                     .smNNmmmmmmmNNNmds.                                -:::/+s::::`

@PeterVandivier Much better
@Mathematics I'd start with your wonderfully written, full documentation

12:10 PM
@George.Palacios Yep the only cost of a downvote to a 1-rep user is emotional

@PaulWhite I suppose I struggle to see the motivation for change if the whole thing is basically just about not upsetting new users. Some people just get upset with criticism

@Mathematics that or logging, if you've got it. my money's on someone has a custom VBA trigger in their local Outlook and they rebooted their computer finally

@George.Palacios To be honest I struggle with a lot of the recent stack blogs

@Mathematics It's fully stopped working? IE you can't trace the thing?
@PaulWhite Yeah I feel like their finger is... not on the pulse let's say

I presume they're trying to fix SO-specific problems

12:12 PM
@PaulWhite unpopular opinion: i really respect what they're trying to do with the recent moves

SO is an absolute trash heap
Getting a question answered on there is nigh-on impossible for me personally

@PeterVandivier I'm almost certain their intentions are good
I can't say the quality of execution so far has been stellar

as someone who...
a) use to ask _really bad questions_ and...
2) now fancies himself a reasonably productive community member...
...I read them trying to hold back the tide of crap questions while still trying to capture and curate new productive community members

@George.Palacios LOL, i wish there was any documentation, I won't had to go for a hunt then lol
@George.Palacios that's true
no clue what was checking into emails and putting them into db table

@PeterVandivier used to.... >_>.... <_<

12:14 PM
there are no stored procedure or any trace of table in the code

@George.Palacios he asks fewer questions now 😀
2

@George.Palacios (・ω・)

@PeterVandivier they left about 2 years ago and there laptop is switched off lol

@PeterVandivier 1903! I reckon we could get you to 2k today with a well placed question or two

I am trying to rule out if there's any way in outlook which could forward emails to database table

12:15 PM
@Mathematics I.... I'm really struggling with that one lol.

☝️
this guy gets it

Without it running and no logs I really can't see how you'd find that

i wouldn't be terribly surprised to find out someone had a live user session running on a VM two years after termination tbh

@PeterVandivier Yeah wouldn't be unheard of
In my old place when an old admins account was disabled a load of services just died. That was a fun few days

taking time to deprecate a web service running as a domain admin almost got me fired once

12:22 PM
@PeterVandivier was this the same place you worked last? The one you hated?

no, like 3 years ago, at a job i loved with a boss i didn't realize was a snake until he tried to bite me

long story short - i'd been there for 6 years to his 6 weeks and had already put in my notice anyway. he could have been rid of me in a few weeks but the political fallout from his twattery ended up earning me an extra 3 months salary off of his cost center
mic-drop.gif

@PeterVandivier Not a bad way to leave I guess

the money didn't hurt, but all things considered i don't think i'd choose to do it again
@George.Palacios and no... at my last job i knew the boss was a moron pretty quick :p

12:26 PM
@PeterVandivier how long were you there?

less than a year

Ah. This makes sense

would have been less than 6 months but they declined to release me early and made me warm the bench for the full term of my notice period
that's what you get for being polite and professional in the exit interview i guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No good deed and all that

3 hours later…
2:59 PM
@George.Palacios whatever happened to the firewall coming down?

@PeterVandivier It went back up :(
When I asked the network team about the fact that I could suddenly get on things I shouldn't be able to they genuinely just asked me not to tell anyone hahaha
