Trying to think of ways to speed up slave creation without master downtime. The normal way of doing is: pg_start_backup rsync database files pg_stop_backup rsync wal files and start slave Since 2 can take a long time over the network, is it safe to: rsync pg_start_backup rsync again pg_sto...

I would love to see a good answer to this question timing best ways to setup a slave.

pg_basebackup with streaming of differences accumulated during the backup should be just as fast, I would think.

I don't think so.

I think the asker knows that he needs to do pg_start_backup, rsync and pg_stop_backup

but is concerned that doing rsync without might cause harm somewhere

Making the title longer and wordier doesn't really make it clearer, IMHO
