@Taryn I looked out of curiosity but I can't figure out how

Quick question, is it at all possible to combine a "newer version" of the LDF file with and older version of MDF file and keeping changes logged in the LDF?
Instincts and 1 hour trying says no it is not possible.

Long version:

1. Database in full recovery mode
2. Take a full backup
3. Make some changes
4. Detach database
5. Make a filecopy of the LDF-file
6. Restore from full backup
7. Detach database
8. Make a filecopy of the MDF-file
9. Throw away the backup
10. Delete the database
11. Somehow make the MDF and LDF play together with the change made in step 3 still in place.
If you think it might be possible I could make it a question on site. But a short "no forget about it" works just fine in here.

G'morning folks! A MySQL instance of mine just took a nose dive this morning, after booting in recovery mode & then booting in normal mode, everything is back and working, but accessing a specific unrelated schema from the app is taking a long time
There were a fair few indexes and generated columns in the DB, is it safe to say it's slow because it needs to rebuild them? Ah scratch that, everything seems to be slow

gbn
@MikaelEriksson No. the LDF is also "keyed" to the MDF by a GUID so you can't substitute antoher LDF

@gbn Ok, But they are from the same database only different places in time. Error I get with restore is The log scan number (38:194:42) passed to log scan in databaseattach

@Sean Not rebuild the indexes. But needs to read the data (indexes, tables) from disk. It needs "warming up"

gbn
9:50 AM
But in that case the LSN of the copied LDF does not match the expected LDN stored in the MDF
@MikaelEriksson As expected

Yes, it make sense.

gbn
Step 6 sets the LSN stored in the MDF (in some system table of course) to "earlier" than the LSN of the copied LDF
I'd like to think this is a test system and you're trying out of curiosity...

@gbn I thought perhaps something could be done with a tail-log backup (not sure what I am talking about here).
@gbn I would also like to think that.

@MikaelEriksson And that on a friday

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Yeah, time does heal most things by the looks of it. It seems to be picking up again :D

9:55 AM
Too long story, somewhat interesting, involves many parties. I'm at the sideline as a guy who happens to know something about SQL Server.

gbn
right...
- The database is offline? or suspect? or just not there (deleted)?

It's not an current happening crisis. It is a slow soon to be crisis if they don't get their shit together.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Fantastic, thank you!

gbn
I assumed deleted so try this...
1. copy current MDF and LDF to a safe place
2. create a new db same name, same file names etc.
3. take new one offline
4. copy original MDF and LDF back
5. bring online
6. now won't start
At this point, SQL server has an database that won't come online
> If a database is offline and fails to start and you need to restore the database, first back up the tail of the log. Because no transactions can occur at this time, using the WITH NORECOVERY is optional.
> ...Tail log backups capture the tail of the log even if the database is offline, damaged, or missing data files.
YMMV and good luck

10:01 AM
Thanks! Will try that.

gbn
Please let me know. It's a long time since I had to rescue something like this. SQL 2000 on some idiot's desktop that was "critical for trading" (investment bank). Also see multiple LDFs, no backups, LDF filled disk because full recovery model

10:18 AM
@MikaelEriksson I think it's worth a question on Database Administrators

10:37 AM
@gbn Think I got it now.
Lunch and then retest.

10:54 AM
@TomV when you go to your dev story, click edit at the top of it near your pic, you should be able to select the network sites you want to display.

@Taryn Is there a problem if I activate my "Developer Story" but use my alias (ypercube or "Yper Cube") as the name?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ it's your story, you can do what ever you'd like. If you use Yper Cube, then that's how you'll appear to any employers. We do offer two fields though, one for your Display Name on the site and a Full Name for employers.

Just wanted you folks to know that table-swap I did last night went really well, both tables are performing much better today. Going to keep an eye on it and see if it changed more.

@gbn No luck after lunch. Will post a question on site.

gbn
@MikaelEriksson I wasn't sure it would work TBH because of LSN chain

Yea, now it is the final restore of the tail log that complains about LSN is too early.
Probably because I had to make a fullbackup/restore to put the database in restoring mode. Perhaps there are some other way of doing that.

@MikaelEriksson it might be a workaround to use something like apex log reader to find changes in the the t log and manually apply them to the db

11:53 AM
@sp_BlitzErik Yep, I have suggested that they have a look at third party apps that can do things with the log-file directly.

@Philᵀᴹ Awesome! (I managed to post it with the image ^^^)

A: Should we really allow thank you comments?

Shog9So... This is one of those ideas that sounds really caring. Who could possibly be against expressions of gratitude! I mean, sure, they get noisy for 3rd-party readers after a while, but hey, small cost compared to making authors feel good right? Well... After a while, they ain't that much fun f...

interesting idea

ah, meta.SE
quite some controversy about the arbitration clause in the new ToS

Even better: Instead of up and down arrows implement a box containing positive emojis and negative emojis. Clicking on positive emojis is an up-vote and clicking on negative emojis is a down-vote.
:Meh:

12:19 PM
I can't wait for suggestions on what those emojii should be
@Lamak surely not

ahem
I heard turdles have a high acceptance with users.

@PaulWhite no controversy?
no arbitration?

@Lamak I will not believe there is any drama on meta. It could not happen.
define: turdle

@PaulWhite ah, well, I almost never go to meta.SE

@Lamak meta.SO is also perfectly fine at this time

12:23 PM
anyway, reading about it, an arbitration clause doesn't seem like the best of things
@PaulWhite is it?, what am I missing?

@Lamak Sarcasm. You are missing sarcasm.
@Lamak Honestly I have no idea. I have had no time to read anything about that yet.

@PaulWhite that's bad, I didn't realize I was so sick today

Not sure how I myself feel about this, but to me it doesn't seem to play well with their initiative to become more welcoming and inclusive. Thanks are unnecessary noise as far as finding a ready solution to your problem is concerned, but not letting you express your gratitude in your own way, offering you a standardised "reaction" instead – not sure if that's going to play well for newcomers. But I'm curious to see what it'll be like

It can happen to anyone
@AndriyM Seems like it's worth a shot to me. They have been unwilling to try things in the past, and I think that has hurt.
Not that I personally find "thanks" comments so bothersome.
Of course I still delete them when they've expired.

shouldn't any comment with no votes expire after a certain period of time?

turdle: (noun) A nice word for an otherwise objectionable description of an excrement, which can be used in chats, which would otherwise be moderated away. Not to be confused with turtle.

@sp_BlitzErik That's an idea worth trying

Q: Allow for setting comments to "auto-expire", to become "temporary comments"

ArjanMeanwhile, in August 2009 "noise" was added as reason for comment flagging, and the comment flags show in the 10k tools. And Allow low-rep users to suggest edits is on its way. Hence: I don't care for this request myself anymore. An explicit [status-declined] would be fine. What about being ab...

@hot2use 💩💩💩💩💩?

@PaulWhite eggsactly

@PaulWhite just don't go there right now

12:41 PM
oh I can handle reading meta, I just don't have the spare time right now

12:51 PM
The deadline for me to say something ingenious about this is in 10 minutes. Add the Q on site anyway. My current standpoint is NO.

Q: Make a newer version of the LDF-file work with an older version of the MDF-file

Mikael ErikssonIs it possible to combine a "newer version" of the LDF file with an older version of the MDF file and keep changes logged in the LDF? Lets assume there has been no log-backups in the time between as I guess that would make this truly impossible. Steps: Database in full recovery mode Take a fu...

do believe you're right without a third party tool
trying to think what would happen if you followd @gbn's instructions up top but only copied the ldf and not the mdf
but that's... just crazy talk

I got that after going back to serverfault after a while (or revisiting the same question after a while))

@sp_BlitzErik "The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'mic' database." on restore of log.
The tail log is taken from the database that was created in a later step. So not the same database anymore.

@Taryn Ah thanks I missed that edit link somehow

1:07 PM
@MikaelEriksson ah okay

1 hour later…
2:19 PM
@MikaelEriksson, have you checked Paul's article on hack attaching a db?

Anyone uses google apps with a private domain?

@Marian nope, Thanks.

2:54 PM
Solved.

3:48 PM
I'm generating an EDI message and date/time format is: `CCYYMMDDHHMM`.
Does anyone know what CC stands for?
Century?

But there is a sample in the doc: 201110011200
Should it be 21?

CC = Century
@McNets 21?

2011
21 Century

I suppose that's 2011-10-01 12:00
@McNets I don't think so. That would not be very readable. I suppose CC stands for the first 2 digits of a 4-digit year.

3:52 PM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ yes, I think so. Thank you.

4:35 PM
its not every day you get a necromancer badge.

@MaxVernon Grats!

thanks

A: Conditional Connection in SSIS based on Availability Group status

Evandro MuchinskiLet's assume that you have an availability group with only one secondary replica (you could easily expand this sample for more replicas) 1. Connections You will need 3 connections: AG listener (to run the query that will return which server is holding the primary an secondary) Primary (to be...

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Never been downvoted for that before =(

Fairly new user and a good answer

It's true though.. ANSI is a powerful cabal
> The dispute, which has played out in a series of closed-door meetings around the world over the past three years and has not been previously reported, turns on whether the International Organization of Standards should approve two NSA data encryption techniques, known as Simon and Speck. The U.S. delegation to the ISO on encryption issues includes a handful of NSA officials, though it is controlled by an American standards body, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Oh gawd,
> ANSI, the body that leads the U.S. delegation to the ISO, said it had simply forwarded the NSA proposals to the organization and had not endorsed them.

@EvanCarroll just a guess. I agree with the proposal.

too much style =) dba.se can't handle it.

5:16 PM
@EvanCarroll it's a 4-letter organization. A level below 3-letter ones, in cabalness.
(if that's a thing)

hahahahahahhah
Only because they stuck a Murica' on there.
Otherwise it would be a full 3.

A: How exactly does trigram word-similarity work?

Evan CarrollIt doesn't work like that, from the a mailing list thread in 2017-2018 We searching for continuous extent of second string trigrams (in original orders) which has best similarity with first string trigrams. Possible solution could be forcing this extent boundaries to be at word boundaries...
