Oh you're talking about the app. I use that even more rarely.
@dezso It was @JackDouglas that handled your comment flag originally.
I made an edit to the answer so the comment is fully obsolete (and no longer referenced), then deleted the comment.
@SeanGallardy-Microsoft Part-timer!

@PaulWhite to think, we could have been neighbors. livescience.com/61490-chunk-of-north-america-in-australia.html

hello @sp_BlitzErik

@JoeObbish howdy!

should I feel bad that my sql saturday presentation isn't done?

@JoeObbish no, I finish most of mine waiting people to sit down.
I thought that was obvious 😊

I did kind of give the presentation before
so I guess I have more than nothing

1:21 AM
Which one is it?

1:35 AM
optimizer one
really is there no other one

maybe you guys can be interested
;)

666 is unlucky

@Lamak I think I could only get there if I had a precon

come on....one of you guys could come to Chile sometime
@sp_BlitzErik that can be done
Benjamin Nevarez had a precon in the last one in Santiago

@Lamak I'll talk to Brent about it when he's back from vacation. Do people generally speak enough English for it to work?

1:46 AM
@sp_BlitzErik that would be awesome. I'd venture that some people could have some trouble....but there are ways to make it work

have lamak translate in real time

@Lamak cool, I'll stick a reminder on my reminder thing. Do you know the organizers?

@sp_BlitzErik yeah, I'm part of the team that's organizing it

Well there you go.

2:03 AM
yup

1 hour later…

4:02 AM
@sp_BlitzErik Sort of. The shortest distance between Aus and NZ now is about the same as New York to Dallas, TX.

3 hours later…
6:57 AM
Good morning everybody

Everyone move to Houston!
Dallas sucks, it's not really a city.

gbn
7:30 AM
Is that Houston, Europe?

Morning

What's the correct/most optimal hint or set of hints to use on a table when doing upsert in SQL Server with UPDATE ... WHERE ...; IF @@ROWCOUNT = 0 INSERT ...; (wrapped in a transaction)? I thought I saw WITH (UPDLOCK, HOLDLOCK) to be suggested somewhere but can't find it. Instead I've found this suggesting you just set the isolation level to Serialisable. Would it make sense to do both perhaps?

Morning

morning and evening

Ah, HOLDLOCK is equivalent to SERIALIZABLE, so there goes part of the problem

8:16 AM
@PaulWhite thanks a lot

@gbn hi, I'm trying to get last backup name for one of my databases using your answer here, Does maintenance plans store backup file names on msdb..backupset too?

gbn
@McNets Maintenance plans just invoke BACKUP, BACKUP always populates msdb..backupset (and the rest)
SELECT
bs.database_name,
bmf.physical_device_name
FROM
msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily bmf
JOIN
msdb.dbo.backupset bs ON bs.media_set_id = bmf.media_set_id
WHERE
bs.database_name = 'master'
ORDER BY
bmf.media_set_id DESC;

@gbn mmm, backupset has one record only, and my m. plan backup at least 10 db

@McNets Remove the where on 'master'?

I'm using: SELECT * FROM msdb..backupset

gbn
8:21 AM
How long ago is the backup? How often does sp_purge_jobhistory run?
SELECT * FROM msdb..backupset gives me 888 rows on a UAT server, going back to 23rd Dec

@gbn sorry, my fault, I need a coffee, I was using select top 1

gbn
ha ha

rookie mistake :)

gbn
That's also a copy+paste fail

Have a coffee

gbn
8:23 AM
see yah in 10

haha I've copied it from this answer: stackoverflow.com/a/31082858/3270427

gbn
I actually use this now a lot paulbrewer.wordpress.com/sp_restoregene
or sp_databaseRestore from brent etc

@gbn ok, added to favorites, thank you

9:19 AM
SELECT
   CONVERT(CHAR(100), SERVERPROPERTY('Servername')) AS SRVNAME,
   msdb.dbo.backupset.database_name,
   msdb.dbo.backupset.backup_start_date,
   msdb.dbo.backupset.backup_finish_date,
   msdb.dbo.backupset.expiration_date,

   CASE msdb..backupset.type
       WHEN 'D' THEN 'Full'
       WHEN 'I' THEN 'Diff'
       WHEN 'L' THEN 'Log'
   END AS backup_type,
   msdb.dbo.backupset.backup_size / 1024 / 1024 as [backup_size MB],
   msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily.logical_device_name,
   msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily.physical_device_name,
and put this in the WHERE clause to find the last two days worth of information:
AND   (CONVERT(datetime, msdb.dbo.backupset.backup_start_date, 102) >= GETDATE() - 2)

Q: pg_restore using azure platform

Andy KI'm trying to restore a postgres dump on Azure. Most of the restore are doing ok, one issue is giving me some headache: the postgres role. In most postgres database, the postgres role is set as super user by default. In Azure, the postgres role is set as a normal role without super user privil...

@hot2use Thank you

You are welcome.

This looks like a bash problem, not a dba one. I suggest we move this question to SuperUser or Unix or AskUbuntu — ypercubeᵀᴹ 50 secs ago
Which SE site should a bash question be asked?

9:47 AM
I guess over on Unix or ServerFault.com, because they have a bash tag too.

Sure, you already stated this in your answer. But what, where, how? — dezso 9 secs ago

@dezso yes, but as the answer referred to the comment I thought I should leave it. A bit more thought and I'd have done what Paul did and edited the answer as well.

10:02 AM
@JackDouglas why do you say it's not valid if?
It seems ok to me, if he fixes the output of the psql.
if $(psql -tc "select 'echo 42';" &); then echo "ok"; else echo "not ok";fi
The above works ok. Prints '42' and 'ok'.

10:20 AM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ the thing that he thinks he is testing he is executing

ok. But it is a valid if - fi.

yes, true

I'm not sure what exactly he is trying to do. Perhaps check if the (psql) statement has been succesfully started in the background.

I think he really wants to test that the psql command returns 'success'
what you said :)
pretty sure he doesn't want to execute the result of the command!

Stack Overflow has 95,365 questions tagged bash.
We have 62,279 questions total.

@PaulWhite Wow.. what a difference
I wonder how many sql tagged items there are on SO

hi @bluefeet

1:05 PM
@Lamak morning

@bluefeet how's everything?

@Lamak very busy but good. How's everything with you?

@bluefeet kinda similar....though I'm changing jobs soon
now that I remember, I read a tweet last weekend, how's your wife?

@Lamak oh yeah, what are you going to be doing?
@Lamak she's fine, though uncomfortable. He thumb looks a bit sad between the chunk she cut off and then the burn to get the bleeding to stop.

@bluefeet yikes, that kinda thing hurts so freaking much
@bluefeet kinda starting the BI area/department at the new company

1:11 PM
@Lamak that's awesome, congrats
@Lamak yeah, they are guessing it will be about a 2 month recovery for it to fully heal

@bluefeet thanks!. Good luck with the recovery

thanks!

@PaulWhite well, comparatively...
@AndriyM this is a great post® about that

@sp_BlitzErik Thanks!

@bluefeet oh no, what happened?!

1:19 PM
@sp_BlitzErik she was chopping veggies and took about a 1/3 of an inch chunk off her thumb -- off the tip/pad of the thumb

@bluefeet didn't even know you had a wife. And vegetables are evil.

@dezso Yes I do, and some veggies are evil. She hates cutting them now.

@bluefeet I hate the chicken for the same reason. Even if I cannot tell anymore which one of my nails had an unorthodox shape.

@bluefeet maybe she just needs a better knife. i bet if she had a kikuichi warikomi she'd be more careful ;)

1:25 PM
@sp_BlitzErik cheapo

@dezso lol - do you cut your food with an actual katana?

@dezso well I'll say we didn't eat chicken as planned the night it happened. The chunk sorta looked like it.

@sp_BlitzErik only when I am invisible

@sp_BlitzErik we actually just bought new knives and she is always really careful, she thinks it just slipped. :(

@dezso real ninjas are always invisible

1:28 PM
@bluefeet yeah, like in 'what did you have for dinner? A roasted chicken-human with bloody vegetables'
@sp_BlitzErik then just do your math

@bluefeet i hope her hook grip isn't permanently damaged! what a nightmare.
@dezso icu

otherwise, this is the thing you can laugh about a few years later, but are rather scary at the time
like when I tried to discard an old plastic watering can, and the knife failed, nearly opening one of the big venae in my underarm
with my 3-year-old on my side for the paedagogical effect

@bluefeet a couple of months ago we had friends over to lunch....I was chopping vegetables too, and the kid of my friends ran to hug my legs....aaaand goodbye to my index finger nail...I chopped it completely off

@sp_BlitzErik it definitely would be if she lifted.

@bluefeet i feel your pain. my wife is a damn dyel too.

1:33 PM
I quickly said something that I won't cite here, then assessed if it was the vein, and then didn't call an ambulance

The sad part is we're always worried about my fingers since I'm the one using power tools/saws, etc and she does that with a knife
@Lamak ugh, terrible
I mean I did this with no real injuries

oh wow, that's awesome

@bluefeet yup....luckily somehow didn't really cut flesh....just the whole nail

do you take custom orders?

@bluefeet saw it in twitter, looks great

1:37 PM
thanks, no custom orders yet

rumor has it brent is gonna start paying us in real money, not just brentcoins anymore

@bluefeet aye

maybe eventually I'll sell. I've had several people ask

@sp_BlitzErik what exchange can I find some brentcoins?

@Lamak they only work on ebrent, our company store

1:41 PM
@sp_BlitzErik I may need your company's assistance in the future....rumor has it that there could be some budget for it
so those coins sound interesting ;)

they're on nearly par with the bolivar

question

how do you deal with accent in access...?
@sp_BlitzErik ah...

@sp_BlitzErik at least it isn't a zimbabwean dollar
(not that those exist anymore)

1:49 PM
I have a few files that are linked as data source on access
before they were coming as ascii
now they have accent like é or è
it is making access mad
maybe that

@Lamak I still have a hundred trillion of those

@TomV yeah, pretty crazy

Quick question, anybody here used SQL Server MDS/DQS? If so how badly did it suck?

> The final redenomination produced the "fourth dollar" (ZWL), which was worth 1025 ZWD (first dollars)
that was supposed to say: 10^25 ZWD

2:19 PM
@Lamak haha !
I have a note from the 2nd world war, during the German occupation of Greece. Face value: 2 billion drachmae.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ that's sounds like a lot

2:34 PM
@Lamak you could probably buy a loaf of bread with that ;)

@ypercubeᵀᴹ that's too much
a whole loaf of bread?

Wartime inflation (or if you're Zimbabwe, economic-crash peacetime inflation) can be pretty crazy. I remember stories about how the German reichsmark (WW2 currency) in the last few weeks of WWII was more useful as kindling (for starting fires) than as actual money (i.e. the purchasing power was effectively nil)

@SimonRigharts You're probably referring to Weimar, which was between WW1 and WW2 but indeed, the notes were used as cheap wallpaper

Quite possibly - my education (being as I come from NZ) wasn't really focused on Europe :)

2:43 PM
@Lamak my bad. It was 100 billion drachmae

so 50 breads?, that's just crazy

@Lamak no, probably less.

gbn
@Lamak Only for the next 5 minutes. Then inflation means it's worth 4 loaves of bread

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Nice Hekaton note!
5

2:47 PM
According to a site I'm reading, it's value compared to current values would be 0.10 euros

third time lucky, turns out linking images from Wikipedia is hard

@gbn ah, of course

1 hour later…
3:57 PM
Yo.

hey there, @Zane

4:13 PM
that is 10^9 * 10^12 pengő

4:55 PM
@dezso amazing
(reading the "End of the pengő" section)

How interesting.

3 hours later…
8:16 PM
fine, i'll blog about computed columns and cardinality estimates

8:32 PM
@sp_BlitzErik NO
blog about something not boring.

i asked for ideas days ago

pssh. Never asked me!
the XTP stuff is pretty interesting go blog about that. Or see wtf Microsoft is talking about with AI and python and whatever
blog about that.
or blog about cross-platform disassembly of PE32+ executables and coredumps with Radare

snoozefest
python
good lord
do you still get crayons when you go to restaurants?

if they put crayons on the table, I'm not ordering an appetizer.

@EvanCarroll Putting crayons in your mouth is what enables you to wax eloquent on so many subjects

8:42 PM
am i on acid?

@Forrest one of the many humble qualities. Crayons truly are the Tide Pods that God wanted us to have.
