> Read the amazing story of dv01 and how SQL Server on Linux exceeded their performance expectations as they migrated from PostgreSQL

> At one point, we hired a PostgreSQL consultant to try to optimize our queries, and, at the end, he told us not only was this use case impossible on Postgres, but it was impossible for any SQL database
aha
this is another call for bashing, as it sounds

gbn
Many hedge funds and the like use/used PG because it keeps costs low. Especially the small outfits. I know one or guys who left big banks to start hedge funds

Morning

7:33 AM
No bashing. I'm just posting in contrast to someones usual pro-PostgreSQL stance. And it seems to be fact based.

fact based coming from an article written by an editor is not what I would called that article. Sorry to say so

@hot2use fact based?
"a consultant said ..."

gbn
At some level all RDBMS are equal. So the consultant is talking bollocks.
I'd suggest a bad implementation of the design on PG that happened to better suit SQL Server

It seems that the workload they were talking about is OLAP. Which considering the lack up to now of paralellization, was not the best fit for Postgres. Or perhaps a bad design/implementation. We don't have enough info to be sure.

@gbn or is not that skilled (read incompetent) and the DV1 team as a whole too...maybe...

gbn
7:45 AM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ my experience of PG is OLTP. I have seen a 1TB DW on MySQL which absolutely sucked too
@AndyK nah, I think @ypercubeᵀᴹ is correct, wrong type of load for PG

@gbn ok

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Does Postgres columnstore extension thingee compare to SQL Server columnstore?

I will have a more thorough read later, I parsed it instead of read it

I interpret the article as saying they fixed it with columnstore instead of some druid/olap/elasticsearch setup

I see, so if a consultant (Example: Brent O., Paul Wh, Paul R., Adam M., Aaron B., ...) say it performs better, then I better not believe it?
just thinking

7:58 AM
@hot2use Who says it was somebody good
"We hired a consultant" could just mean "Tom V came and he couldn't fix it"

True, but also true the other way round.
I'm not anti-PostgreSQL BTW, I prefer PostgreSQL over MySQL for example, just because I find the former more mature than the latter.

Sure but still, the article is just an infomercial, not necessarily fact based
Their TPC-E benchmarks are facts, for what they're worth, but I don't see any "proof" it couldn't be done on another platform

8:21 AM
@TomV I don't know. It's in my (company) plans to check for possible solution for analytic workloads, so it's one thing I need to look into.
I should add SQL Server for Linux / columnstore in my to-check list for possible solutions ;)

or is there?
since my meta question doesn't seem to be popping up in here

Q: New Review Queue: Faulty Red Dot!

sp_BlitzErikWith the new toolbar, sometimes when I check the review queue, I'll see a red dot. However, when I go into the queue, it says that its been cleared. The red dot will persist for a bit afterwards.

Oh boy, a technical support call with Microsoft and our project manager is doing the talking

never a good sign

12:48 PM
We aren't making any progress on the installation of updates and stuff, and the support engineer wants to close the case because it hasn't been updated for a while
tbh the support engineer is a muppet too

Q: Review queue updates

Joe FriendWe are actively working on top bar improvements, many of which are a part of bringing the new top bar to the Stack Exchange network sites. Several of the changes are relevant to SO. As such, you should read the full update here. Specifically, I wanted to call out the following issues which have...

A: New top bar is coming to the Stack Exchange network

E.P.If you want me to review, then don't light up the review icon if there are no actionable tasks The number-one complaint I have with the current top bar is the fact that the review counter lights up even when there's nothing at all I can do to make it go away: So, what's the main outcome o...

is there something specific at one of those links about the problem i'm having?
did a quick scan but it wasn't obvious

the "Review queue false positives?

that looks like it's showing the old top bar/icon

@TomV my heart-felt sympathy

gbn
1:07 PM
@TomV You need a quiet store room and some cable ties. Chloroform helps

First time ever a support call ended in name calling and the support engineer scrambling for the exit

@TomV sounds successful!

@Marian It was amusing to watch more than it was successful

I can believe that..
we've got a similar ticket open with our data center providers, them sending weekly emails about "happy to close this one? long time nothing happening", with them exactly being the ones who were supposed to find a fix for a cluster crash :).
can't think of any polite reply to that email.. so I'm stalling a response

I understand the support engineer in this case too, it's been months since we were suggested a fix, and our response is "haven't had the time yet", so all they ask is "can I soft-close from our side, just reopen it once you've gotten around to testing the fix"

1:21 PM
@AndyK long time ago we talked about this one, but I got my first half marathon yesterday

@Marian well done

@TomV ah, so then's a split responsibility for it :)
@AndyK thanks a lot, it was a difficult, as I didn't have a consistent training schedule, and maybe wrong shoes
but I made it.. eventually :D

@Marian it is the most important things to finish it
I completed a marathon 3 weeks ago
same here, not consistent training, bad shoes, 6h05m
but eventually I made it
I talked yesterday with a running mate, 55 yo guy, he said he completed his last marathon in the Alps. in 10 hours. He was saying that at the end, it is not the time, more finishing
so congrats, especially for a First

gbn
1:37 PM
@AndyK I've complete many Marathons too. I prefer that name to the new fangled "Snickers"

@sp_BlitzErik blame caching

@gbn lol

2:23 PM
[closes the word "asking" as unclear what you're (null)].

2:42 PM
@AndyK nice, well done

@Marian it was really tough. I saw some guys who passed out and one guy passed away

@AndyK that's a crazy time to endure a walk in the park, can't think of a mountain race that long..
@AndyK wow, that's tough

@Marian when I heard my mate said that, I was like ... wow. For the dude who passed away, yep tough. It was all news around the region where I live

3:04 PM
@AndyK I've also have a long runner friend who's doing crazy mountain races pretty often.. but he's extremely fit and makes it look easy :/

3:16 PM

@AndyK bye

@TomV untrue

@SimonRigharts @PaulWhite never sleeps ... there are just times when he's placed in the RUNNABLE queue so that others get a chance (yes, that means that sometimes his quantum has elapsed and technically he's waiting on a resource)

@Marian I meant the master database bot

@TomV ha, thought so.. and also thought of trying a silly joke :)

3:26 PM
I think @PaulWhite fixed that a while ago by re-initializing the bot

3:45 PM
Today I have been mostly using a c# decompiler and wireshark. The joys of debugging other peoples code …

Q: The help center does not reflect the new top bar

Tom VI'm not sure if we should wait a bit longer until we are absolutely sure that the new top bar is staying in it's current form (such as the dots in the review drop down) but currently the help center isn't reflecting the new top bar. Take for example access review queues which still states: ...

@PaulWhite explain lemonade apples to me

@JoeObbish Well they're apples that taste somewhat like lemonade?

Do you recommend them?

Well I quite liked them when I tried, but my wife was less keen. There are other apples we both like more
It's not a very strong taste at all
I think our current favourite is a variety called Envy, but not 100% on that

imo pink lady apples are the best

There are many nice ones to choose from
@sp_BlitzErik Yes they're nice too

7:08 PM
quite~

Ah. I'm being told the current favourite is Eve
Who can keep up

your wife can?

I guess

is it really keeping up when you're in charge?

Our food shopping is strictly moderated
I've been trying to get suspended for years

@sp_BlitzErik good point

@TomV Congrats on breaking 10k

@PaulWhite by whom?
@Erik what about me, name thief?

@sp_BlitzErik you were congratulated enough

@sp_BlitzErik Kiwibank, ultimately :)

7:27 PM
@sp_BlitzErik I did not

nice work Tom
and you did it without me having to give you a bounty

your bounty was meaningless

sniff
@PaulWhite I'll give them a try if there are any left. Grocery store had 3

Q: *Why* Does the SQL Server Debugger Require Sysadmin Privileges

GWRI recently posted a question looking to find an alternative to granting devs sysadmin privileges just to use the sql server debugger. I am finding that there really isn't a feasible solution to this. My question here is, WHY does the sql server debugger require sysadmin privileges? I want to un...

or rather, it doesn't seem to stand a good chance of being answered here

@sp_BlitzErik you're just a stored procedure. No need to congratulate bots... ;)

@Erik i start with sp_, i'm not just any stored procedure
hmpf

lol

I run the sp_BlitzErik stored procedure on my 2008 R2 servers all the time
just to make him suffer

I do congratulate you for spelling Erik properly though

7:37 PM
i don't recognize any other spellings
heresy, afaic
@JoeObbish i still support 2008. r2 is at least from this decade.

yeah, but do you like it?

I don't know how many times I've had an exchange like the following; (them) "Do you spell your name with a 'c'?" (Me) "No, K" then they write "Erick"
@sp_BlitzErik Do you support Azure? I wanted to use some of Brent's tools on Azure but they weren't supported. One of these days I'm going to pretend to be smart enough to port them to Azure, and put some effort into porting some of them.

@Erik we tried but they change support and features too often

gotcha that makes sense.
Such is the blessing and the curse of SaaS

I was already boycotting SO

you're so hip

@Erik Thanks
And welcome back, it's been a while since we've met in here IIRC

@sp_BlitzErik yes
you may ride my coattails

are there cocktails on your coattails?

@Philᵀᴹ No, but I am very concerned about it.
In other news, I am actually moving to Tunbridge Wells next weekend.

are you concerned?

he's a phony!

I used to live in Edenbridge, which is not far from Tunbridge Wells. However, I am now actually moving into Tunbridge Wells. I've just rented an apartment in St. Johns, just behind the eponymous church.
This is, however, no particular cause for concern.

you can practically spit on @TomV from there

10:06 PM
I think Belgium is a little further than spitting distance, although most poms do think 100 miles is a long way.
I could get a train to Belgium from Dartford or Ashford, though.

perhaps, if you come from a long line of chimney sweeps.
genetic black lung

I don't think any of my ancestors were a chimney sweep.

probably would have seen them in mary poppins if they were

But I don't think I would have been concerned if they were.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells You'd be closer if you took a train to the north of France than if you went to Brussels

10:18 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells totally understandable

I think I need to change the heatsink gunk on my computer's CPU.
Never done that to a Thinkpad before, but I understand it's pretty straightforward.

it's not bad, i did it to my w540
you never quite need as much as you think

@TomV We're positively encouraged to do so, to protect from UV

Proper windy here this evening. Had to dodge a few full wheelie bins getting blown into the road when I was driving back from climbing

did you notify the constabulary?

@phil - ever look at windy.com?
