Q: Should we tag with all terms in a tree?

JoeI've noticed a couple of questions that have all of the tags: oracle oracle-11g oracle-11g-r2 Ideally, the tagging would support hierarchies, and know that 'oracle' is a broader term of 'oracle-11g-r2', so we didn't have to put on the redundant tags, but I don't think it currently does. So, ...

Also many of the tags have explicit guidance about tagging the product and the version

shhhhh, I didn't give great advice back then, and I'm definitely not listening to that @jcolebrand asshole

@jcolebrand Yeah I wonder what ever happened to him.
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ You still around?

12:15 AM
@PaulWhite he probably got knackered off and busy, who knows

Anyway the way I read that "reserved keyword" Q & A, the issue was not solved. See the comments on the answer. It seems Rick just gave up and I don't blame him. The question in unclear and useless to the site, IMO.

@PaulWhite each update is creating a new version of the row — that isn't actually necessary because the original row (and all the updates) are currently only visible to this transaction so pg could just update the row in place without losing any information needed for MVCC.

context switch

context switches are expensive :)
generally speaking, you don't keep on updating the same row in a single transaction so I guess no-one has ever bothered to optimise this edge case
I have no idea whether Oracle would bloat undo or SQL Server would bloat whatever it uses in the same circumstances

@PaulWhite yes

12:20 AM
@JackDouglas I see thanks. Thinking about that after the next context switch.
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Opinion on my statement about that Q & A just above?

@JackDouglas I think I've seen some reecent activity on that matter.
@PaulWhite Let me reread that question and answer again.

FWIW I think Evan's edit was way too brutal. Something that needs that much editing is usually past saving (or the editor is ha ha)

Q: Merge date, time and datetime tags

TypoCubeᵀᴹdatetime has 175 questions, date has 98 and time has 45 (and some of them are common, 15 for example are tagged with both date and datetime). Are the three tags similar enough to be merged? Or is there any important difference between them from a tagging perspective? If you think the tags ar...

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ oh that's interesting. I didn't find anything on Google (but didn't look that long)
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ all the easy questions have been asked :)

A: In case of multiple updates of the same record in a single transaction, how many versions are being stored?

Paul White In case of multiple updates of the same record in a single transaction, how many versions are stored? Just one. The first update to the row generates a row version and exclusively locks the row. Later updates to the same row within the same transaction do not generate new row versions. A...

Q: Merge date, time and datetime tags

TypoCubeᵀᴹWhile editing/tagging a question, I noticed that the datetime tag has this info: for questions specific to data types that contain both date and time parts. which seems wrong to me. Seeing a "datetime" tag, I would assume the question has to do with "date or time", not "date and time". D...

If I ever join hands with someone in the Microsoft borg, Paul is going to be my man.
That's a great idea!
I once suggested we merge all the sites together.
It's the most downvoted answer on the whole network, afaik.
Fight the good fight, brother.
@PaulWhite I'm for closing the question.
Or deleting it entirely.
@PaulWhite But, I like my edit because that's useful.

@PaulWhite Yes, I agree. I hadn't read the comments on Rick's answer. Should be treated as an abandoned question. The issue is somewhere between the bash script and the SQL produced by it.
I can flag/vote for closing

On the subject of questions that should be closed... This one is FARRRR more subjective than my question. dba.stackexchange.com/questions/2195/how-is-like-implemented
Also stupid-popular.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ haha, that would be a gazillion lines of xml :)

I can think of a way to solve his problem but it would be messy and I'm not sure I have the time to work it out today

10:21 AM
@TomV so I remembered well, that you have worked with SSRS/SSIS ;)

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ sssht, I don't put it on my resume :)

A: ssrs expression to display first 3 parameter values if "ALL" is selected in Parameter List

Tom VI don't think you can influence the behaviour of the "Select All" check box, but you could achieve something similar using Cascading Parameters. This is a fairly messy solution, especially if you query for the parameter list is slow, but could be an acceptable solution for your end users. For ...

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ ^^ That should put you off using SSRS for a while

@TomV oh nice.
You know there is a secret hat for posting at :00 hours (or :15, :30, :45)?
Or so the rumour is.
Something to keep in mind before posting the next answer!

I can say there is no secret hat for posting a (stub) answer, editing and then undeleting :)

you got the Noel hat

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Just voting on something would have been less work
I'm more proud of the gold badge hat for marshal

10:56 AM
Marshal yes, good one.

How'd you get trendsetter?

@TomV no idea
rhymes with transgender ;)

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ I don't want to taco 'bout that :)

I haven't go that one. Or elementary.

@TomV My guess is it is related to changing hats. Perhaps using the controls to customize it. Perhaps wearing a hat for the first time starting yesterday.
Or very sightly possibly interacting somehow with the very newest question on a site.
Getting the tumbleweed one will be hard on dba I reckon. Ditto the -3/+3 one.

11:01 AM
Or being the first to vote (close / repopen) in X questions?
(trying to find something that matches the "set a trend")

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ It's possible but I was awarded TrendSetter yesterday after doing nothing but wearing an existing hat for th first time.
Set a trend may be a fashion reference.
First time 'dressing' a certain way.
But who knows.

yeah, it could be. I've used the controls and I got the hat. I'm surprised not many people have it, if that's the trigger

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Reverse the downvote on the SSRS question into 2 upvotes maybe

The trigger period for it may have ended already.

Happy Saturnalia for tomorrow one and all, and a little philosophical observation from Jakarta.
When in Jakarta my arse reflects the nature of matter - it has three phases: Solid, Liquid and Gas.
Having said that, I'm not sure if I'm tight-arsed enough to do a Bose-Einstein condensate.

13 minutes into Christmas Day here.

Happy Saturnalia then.
It's still 6pm or so here.

You too. In advance.

Merry Christmas, Happy Saturnalia everyone.

And, for those who are into such things, here's a picture of @MiniConcernedOfTunbridgeWells

I nominated the question for reopening. Interested to see if there is a better approach

Cute.
@TomV Pretty clear cut that it's not unclear to those with experience of the subject area. Do you think the question could be slightly edited to make it even clearer?

On mobile and not home I'll have a go at it later

11:44 AM
@TomV Cheers. No rush, and only a suggestion.

A megagram database, that's new
! thanks for your answer, but of course I know it's not zero byte! but not that much as 3Mg! (for example the file which I deleted the data inside tables and queries, it became only 350kb. But, in any case I used McAfee database security scanner, and It was safe. Thanks again in anyway — Armin 2 hours ago
