@PaulWhite aye.
00:18
and not that i didnt expect this to be the case, but i'd like to confirm that @AaronBertrand is a really good guy. he gave me good advice, too
wife: i need you to cook 2lbs of bacon ... and not eat any of it
me: #@!*#&)@$^&#$)@#
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells @phil @james @jackdouglas @ypercube Before I book flights to come back and get drunk with you all, are you all on for the 5th?

@swasheck That's why a wise soul would cook 4 lbs of bacon

That would be my plan as well

Q: Current Thesis topics in Business Intelliegence and Data Analysis

NagejI am a student who is more interested in the Data Analysis and Business Intelligence. Please let me know the current high trend thesis topics in the Business Intelligence and related fields. Thanks in anticipation.

@JNK what earthquake?

I felt nothing but I saw friends posting on FB that they felt it, despite being 30 miles further away (OK/KS border area had a shake yesterday)
@bluefeet It's so not on-topic here and it's not even on-topic for academia. They specifically exclude 'what should my research topic be?' type questions.
I'm a good 3 hours from the OK border
I get all excited by a title that makes me think good things are in the question. Then I actually open it

Q: How to use parameters in a SQL Task in SSIS?

K4timiniI'm working on a datawarehouse. I wrote a script to loada dimention table by creating date entries (such as the SSAS wizard but directly in my SSIS ETL process). It works well in SSMS and directly in a T-SQL task in SSIS without using parameters). This script doesn't provide any ResultSet, this ...

Oh, I thought that was yesterday. Must have been a precursor
@JNK geez, I'm out of it. I didn't even see that

@billinkc the bacon shortage has affected me on main street
Forgot you were a peasant. Why do I continue to allow you into my circle?
pity

@swasheck Could be worse. Could be a marmite shortage.
I really need to unsubscribe to their daily shirt list

@billinkc you have a circle?
With the junk food I've been eating, yes
More spherical at this point than just circular
I probably shouldn't have favorited this

Q: Updating Identity with DELETE - OUTPUT - INSERT

GidilI need to update an identity column in a very specific scenario (most of the time the identity will be left alone). When I do need to update it, I simply need to give it a new value and so I'm trying to use a DELETE + INSERT combo. At present I have a working query that looks something like this:...

But the guy is asking whether it would cause a deadlock in case of tens of thousands of rows.
My guess is it would and the reason is lock escalation. Is that correct?
18:31
I've used that pattern for ETL before. Actually tried to use it here but they had silly foreign constraints on the target table
@billinkc what did you end up doing with your stage-destination table with uniqueidentifiers?
@billinkc I'm not sure you've noticed this: the rows are being deleted and re-inserted into the same table with a single statement.
Testing it today. Had to get the tables set up, plus I'm making ugly, not exactly accurate graphs to demonstrate performance
@AndriyM Oh, ewwww, no. Hell no
BTW, I hope the reports from NATO about the little green men showing up in your country are not true
@billinkc too late, you already said you've done it
@billinkc uh?
@billinkc Er, I haven't been following the news closely lately, so not sure what that's about.
18:35
@AndriyM he must be still drunk
@Lamak still drunk?
@AndriyM russia is creeping further and further into the country, apparently
you know...since he was 15 I'd say
Ah. I think it's called a black flag operation where soldiers are in a foreign country but not wearing the uniform openly. Anyways, the green men, or polite men, was the term for the Russian soldiers that were operating in Crimea
@billinkc oh, right, I thought you were talking about my country, dude.....I forgot that you just ignore me
18:38
@Lamak Chile is not located in the North Atlantic, mi herman~o
I know I should probably be worried about these things (or at least look worried), all the more so since I live in the region that's actually have borders with Crimea, but, well, I'm just not.
@billinkc Well, I didn't read your comment completely, as always
Not that I'm fine about my country being occupied, but still...
Well, as long as you're not worried, then I'll go on focusing on more tangible fears, like a chunk of asteroid F2372820BeeBop21 breaking loose and hitting me in the head
@billinkc yes. that may knock some sense into you and nobody wants that
18:42
I will cut you
The funny thing about what you said above, Bill, is that I misinterpreted it at first. The "little green men" somehow caused "NATO" to be turned in my mind into "NASA" and the entire message took on a very peculiar meaning.
I suspect (and it pains to me to confess this) that I've got some form of dyslexia when it comes to English
It's ok, I have an IQ of zero where it comes to Ukranian
That's not the same thing and you know it. It's not like Ukrainian is in a position to become the world's most spoken language in the nearest future
Fine, my Mandarin is at zero
Same goes for Hindi
Well, we are equal at that, that's some comfort, thank you.
18:54
Chinese... wow, what an amazing language that I'll never have an opportunity to comprehend

Q: Clustered Index improvemens for particular queries

HoraciuxI found a table that looks like this: CREATE TABLE [dbo].Table1 ( id NUMERIC primary key IDENTITY (1, 1), [idUser] INT NOT NULL , [Amount] INT NOT NULL , [Attempts] INT NOT NULL , [date] [datetime] NOT NULL , [SUM_Amount] INT NOT NULL ) ON [PRIMARY] This table i...

@billinkc you here homie?
Any idea why converting a datetime variable to a string in an SSIS expression would round it up?
@Zane because it's SSIS
@[MyVar] = (DT_DATETIME) "2014-01-01"
@[MV2] = (DT_WSTR, 8) @[MyVar] => "2014-01-02"?
19:53
@myVar = '11/11/2014 11:59:59 PM'
oh @billinkc my answer was better
@billinkc impossible, you are converting it to 8 chars
@bluefeet I agree
(DT_WSTR, 30) @MyVar = 11/12/2014
(DT_WSTR, 23)@[User::ZaneIsNuts] is the formula for Zane2
don't sit at the table 'til your able to
19:56
@billinkc shouldn't be the other way around?
from datetime to string
"datetime variable to a string"
@billinkc yeah, read your variables wrong
yeah, we're talking the same thing. I start with a data type of DateTime in ZaneIsNuts and then convert to string
@billinkc I've got the same plan for a workaround but why does it do that?
19:58
Ahhh, check the precision of your milliseconds
If I change the value to 11/11/2014 11:59:59.999 PM, then my string is rounded
Huh, but SSIS will then dumb the time part down to just 11:59PM and re-evaluation of the time will result in same day at 11:59
I'm assuming there is much derp involved with conversions but never run into this, that I'm aware
Fighting so hard to resist snarky comments

Q: Custom Logging in Data Flow Tasks in SSIS

Raj AryanThe requirement is to log information about the source and destination row counts and start/end times for all DFTs in a package at run time. The following are what is required to log - the name of the parent container of the DFT package name package exec ID the name/id of the DFT name of the s...

It also seems to change my Datatype.
If I set it as a string it seems to set itself back to datetime.

A: How to partition an existing non-partitioned table

Sebastian MeineYou do not specify if your table has a clustered index or not, so let's walk through all options. I am going to use this example partition function, partition scheme and table: CREATE PARTITION FUNCTION pf1(INT) AS RANGE LEFT FOR VALUES(10,20,30,40); GO CREATE PARTITION SCHEME ps1 AS PARTITION ...

Does the CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX ptc ON dbo.pt(pc, Id) WITH(DROP_EXISTING = ON)ON ps1(pc) ; bit work for y'all?
Getting -> Cannot recreate index 'TK421'. The new index definition does not match the constraint being enforced by the existing index.
Ah wait, might have found my dumbness
There's so much to sort through, I know it's amazing I'd find the particular dumbness

I was not this trying as a 13 year old.
He was ultra grumpy this morning, just pissed at the world.
hey - my 9-year old was too
Happen to look at a game we're "friends" on and it says he won a prize and I should congratulate him. At 1:45 in the morning
His bed time is 8:30
we have a "no electronics in the room" policy after my 9-year old (at the age of 6) faked being sick to spend a day playing the iPad and 3DS in his room all day
I can't tell if he intentionally does dumb shit to get caught or if he's just not that shifty
20:58
either way ... lulz later in life, frustration now

@billinkc erg
Bet he didn't realize it would notify you
@billinkc "Congratulations!!! You're grounded, sucka!"
Yeah, he's not supposed to be on it after hours. Can't decide whether to just lock him out of the wireless network at bed time, take away the devices, set up CCTV in his room so I can yell at him, etc
JNK
JNK
Glad I'm not dealing with this stuff yet
@JNK Yes, but I'm going to look like a freaking psychic, and psychotic, parent this evening
JNK
JNK
21:00
though my 4yo apparently picked up "Whatever" somewhere
and now uses it as an all-purpose response
@billinkc the access hours only work when network is needed
@JNK whatever
It's become quite the power struggle lately. End of last school year, I kept hearing him making noise in his room and went in at midnight. He's got his clock radio up to his face using the red LED to read a book (I had removed the flashlight the previous night)
I mean, he could be doing far worse things buuuut I'm shopping for a localized EMP I could set off nightly
So there's that
@billinkc localized to just his room?
JNK
JNK
@billinkc lol
@swasheck Yeah, the physics are a bitch to work out
21:02
@billinkc at least he's reading
JNK
JNK
Why don't you just flip the breaker to his room?
His punishment is usually the threat of taking away books
@billinkc frickin slacker scientists
House wiring isn't granular enough to support just shutting it off to his room or that'd be done
@billinkc sacrifices must be done
21:04
Sacrifices? I suppose I can look around for some live chickens or do I need to step up to goat sized animals?
@billinkc depends on how bad the behavior is
@billinkc GOAT
It's a pity you can't eat the sacrificed animals.
why can't you?
i thought you were supposed to. it's how you support the cult leaders
Nope, you leave it on an altar for the deity to enjoy
21:08
oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
This is why joboo does not answer your requests
has the meat sweats?
Doesn't have them because you gank his victuals
well i guess i deserve the silent treatment
I think it's really because you don't believe in him
21:15
that's a personal decision.
21:30
WHERE IsTransmitted = 1 is not the same as WHERE IsTransmitted = CAST(1 AS bit)
So happy I decided to look at query plans before I ran that
21:43
@billinkc @PaulWhite post?
i noticed
implicit conversions are a work of pure evil
i say that ... but i know they're "necessary." i just think that devs are idiots with them
Yeah, I was looking at my plan since I'm a neophyte with partitioning and comparing it to that post and it saved me some time as I'd have been waiting some time for it to get through all that data
21:46
also ... i may be speaking from personal experience with my small slice of interaction with developers
I think just a big ol warning "hey, we converted this for you" would be nice
where?
In the query plan? SSMS to the dba? Mild electrical shock through the keyboard? I'm flexible on the delivery
WITH NO_INFOMSGS;
Hmmm, my testing strategy neglected to include some indicator of where I'm at in the process
21:56
entropy.
It'll finish when it finishes
Had I made this a real table instead of temporary for holding timings, I could query it about now...
Huh, SELECT StatMan([SC0], [SC1]) is a new one for me
oooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
you're updating stats
Someone else but they're beating the snot out of the box
yeah
that's the auto_update
also - stupid twitter app has 3 notifications for me but i've got nothing
I find it odd that the statistics updating query is using readuncommitted
22:00
@billinkc it's an estimate, at best, anyway
I thought Aaron said we should never use estimates, that's why select count(*) was the best
He's so going to kickban me next week
22:36
Swapping out a partition to delete is pretty freaking awesome
yes it is
I thought making sure the delete was taking advantage of the partition was enough but it's dirt slow. This though, this makes me very happy. I need to get home and write this up (not that it's new or a revelation but at least I'll remember all the gotchas I saw doing this)
Oh and back to my thing about loading the table. At least from an estimated query plan perspective, inserting from a heap into the clustered table is forcing a sort so perhaps a clustered key is in order
