Hi, anyone there? I need some assistance on designing product table for an ecommerce application.

2 hours later…
08:03
@rathishDBA I'm here. Have you posted a question at the site?

5 hours later…
13:31
@rathishDBA Just FYI, this is a chat room, not a help forum... you should ask a question on the site and then, if you have any issues with that, bring them here.

Greetings All ..
@AaronBertrand @swasheck @billinkc how was PASS
14:37
@FreshPrinceOfSO @Kin was there too. he's a really nice guy
@swasheck tell me about PASS
@FreshPrinceOfSO but it was good. i'm on call but wish i wasnt because there are so many things i want to experiment with now
@swasheck you learned STUFF ?
@FreshPrinceOfSO some things i learned that were new (Hekaton and the latchless resource system) ... some things were more in-depth dives into something i knew (Kimberly Tripp's Statistics session) and some things were nice confirmations of what i was already thinking (SQL Server Archaeology session by Kehayias)
@FreshPrinceOfSO still dont know how to use STUFF ... you'll have to ask @AaronBertrand about that .;.. he's the T-SQL/Execution Plan stud
Ahh. Cool.
Silly question
When I do SELECT * FROM sys.databases, how do I ignore an owner_sid of 0x01 ?
14:43
you mean without using WHERE?
@swasheck WHERE owner_sid <> '0x01' doesn't work

@swasheck Nice to see you too ... PASS was an event with knowledge from experts + the only event with close to 5K people for networking ... enjoyed it and will see if I can attend it next year
@Kin so ... who was that other guy that i met (from london) that first night?
Kin
Kin
He is a dba who works for an Oil company .. Vishal Patel
@Kin yes. he was quite bright
@Kin it was quite nice to meet you
Kin
Kin
yeh .. met a lot of people like that .. formed a good team of sql professionals
@Kin there's an industry to get into
Kin
Kin
15:07
@FreshPrinceOfSO Agreed .. as they have tons of money to spend for good opportunity
@Kin they just have tons of money in general
Kin
Kin
Met our heap friends ... @AaronBertrand @billinkc @PaulWhite and @swasheck ...
Also, many people dont even know what dba.stackexchange.com was .. they were under the impression that stackoverflow.com was the only site :-)
Do you see how such a poorly defined problem leads to such haphazard and incorrect answers? — Aaron Bertrand 3 mins ago
Sorry I didn't get to chat with you more last week @Kin. Hopefully you'll be at other events.
@swasheck so how did you find the conference? Will you be back? :-)
@swasheck hope SQL Sentry treated you well on Friday. :-)
@AaronBertrand absolutely
Kin
Kin
@AaronBertrand Yes I will try to be in .. Now time for some knowledge transfer to my team members
15:16
@Kin that used to be one of my bargaining chips back when I had to fight to get to PASS - I'd have to do a few debriefs on my return.
@AaronBertrand let me tell you what ... i was blown away. i loved everything about the SQL Sentry team and my time with them. you guys are awesome
Kin
Kin
@AaronBertrand same here .. Did you managed to attend the Hekaton keynote .. that was amazingly brilliant and well presented
@Kin it's Dr. DeWitt. He could cough up corn flakes on me and I would be smarter for it.
2
@swasheck awesome, that is great to hear.
Kin
Kin
@swasheck Agreed and they were always helpful .. from transportation to knowledge .. Simply awesome ..
@PaulWhite was awesome .. knowledge wise + sense of humor ... He told a guy that your accent was even harder than his .. and he could not understand the question .. the entire room cracked down ...:-)
@AaronBertrand yes. this was eye-opening ... and i also loved his slides
15:22
@swasheck he is definitely a non-conformist
@AaronBertrand i'd work for you guys if i could stay here (and if i was ever asked)
@swasheck do you mean stay where you live?
@AaronBertrand yes. wife has no desire to move.
I'm expected to move to Charlotte at some point. A few of us are rare exceptions that are allowed to work remotely, but it's not their ideal.
@AaronBertrand no, i know ... i remember you saying that ... it was more of a musing out loud thing (which i know wasnt communicated in the chat message).
15:25
No I get it, just wanted to set expectations. :-)
@AaronBertrand oh ... absolutely. i understand. i was musing with Brandon about future goals and if we could describe our ideal job descriptions. i described mine to him and he laughed at me and said, "good luck with that."
Kin
Kin
@swasheck Brent's team is hiring .. and it might be remote as well :-)
@Kin i like them as people ... not sure i'd fit in as a coworker
also ... i'm not there as a SQL Server professional.
also ... i'm not looking right now :)
hey @AaronBertrand how can this be more performant?? :)

Q: how to make a performant 'group by' query in postgres

@bluefeet by storing dates as strings and then casting and filter with BETWEEN
@bluefeet poof
@Lamak It was more a post because they used performant
@AaronBertrand boooooooo
@bluefeet you'd probably rather I ridicule them publicly for not using English? :-)
@AaronBertrand why yes, of course!
So, I don't know if it's just me, but I think that lately in SO there has been a lot more answers on really unclear questions without waiting for clarification
I mean, high rep users just answering whatever might (or not) fit the question
which is weird, because there is almost always someone who asks for clarification

Kin
@Marian Yeh .. figured that out .. Its the words in the title that provoked my curiosity ...
Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love is a 1996 Indian film directed by Mira Nair. The film takes its title from the ancient Indian text, the Kama Sutra, but this only serves as a common link between the characters. During filming in India, the name of the project was not revealed to government officials who would have denied the petition to film in India had it been called "Kama Sutra." Instead, it was called "Maya & Tara." Since government officials made many periodic visits to the set to ensure proper Indian film etiquette, the cast had to improvise fake scenes which avoided the nudity and s...

random downvotes on accepted answers = awesome
@Kin did you meet him at PASS?
@swasheck failed at this complicated task.. :)

@Marian Yeh .. at the event organized by steve ..
@AaronBertrand The format is awesome! I guess they used Word and left-aligned.

@swasheck well, your implementation of error handling (twitter messages) was funny, so it's ok :-)
restraining myself from asking why I got a downvote on this

A: Concatenate Date and Time Variable using SQL Query

bluefeetIn SQL-Server 2008, you can add the values this way: select cast(dt as date) + cast(tm as datetime) from yourtable See SQL Fiddle with Demo

The same person who downvoted me I believe just upvoted an answer that is mysql on a sql server question

It was a bit awkward and it was in Lincoln that a 60 something person was in the session and after it was over they said, I got a lot out of this but I never figured out what the title meant
anyways, back to the hadoop mines

@billinkc Thought initially like that .. but then going through the presentation .. Nice work !

Q: SQL: Find column names for select by XML definition

RobertI have two tables in SQL server 2008: Definitions(ID, XML) Data(DataID, DefinitionID, COL1, COL2, ..) XML looks like this: <definition> <field columnname="COL1" fieldname="FirstName" /> <field columnname="COL2" fieldname="Surname" /> </definition> What I need is something like this:...

@Marian i do what i can
does instant file initialization benefit data file growths as well?
@swasheck only data file. Log files can't benefit from IFI because the data has to be zeroed out.
@AaronBertrand yes. i was just wondering if it would benefit growths of the data file or if it was only for new files where you'd see the benefit
@AaronBertrand Have you ever presented and had someone ask a question that you didn't know the answer to?
@swasheck oh I see. Missing context. Yes, it will benefit data file growths and initial creation the same way.
@Zane of course, it happens all the time
@Zane many audiences are very good at coming up with questions I could never have anticipated on my own. In fact I learn more through presenting than I do otherwise, I think.
(That includes the preparation, of course... but I'm getting better at predicting the outside-the-box questions.)
16:48
@AaronBertrand thanks. i figured it would but didnt want to invest a whole lot of effort into forcing that into group policy if it wouldnt help
@swasheck IFI is always worth it.
@AaronBertrand How do you handle those situations when presenting?
@AaronBertrand like "optimize for ad-hoc"
@Zane i'll look into it and post a blog update on it
@Zane I just tell them great question, I don't know the answer, but I can help you find out.
I offer them to come see me after the presentation to exchange contact details, then I will eventually go find them a blog post or ask the right person and get back to them.
A good percentage of the time, someone else in the audience knows the answer.
Cool.
Thanks.
16:58
Bah, I'm still jet lagged from the week in Charlotte
@MikeFal yeah. it took me a bit to get over it.
Really?
sir..what i have to change ..? — user2878851 1 min ago
does anyone know if this is true outside of Oracle? I can't get it to work on sql fiddle for Oracle
Actually you can as long as you do not have other non-aggregate columns. The group by applies to the inner function, and the outer function then executes without a group by so you can calculate the average of departmental salary maxima, for example. In this case if the minimum average "fall" was required then the group by can stay but the other non-aggregate columns would have to go. — David Aldridge Oct 13 at 16:23
@AaronBertrand ... was hoping that you'd use the PASS Summit as a buffer to wean yourself off of SO
@swasheck guess not :)
17:10
I probably should have
grumble grumble LARMOOKA grumble grumble
@bluefeet Have you set up a fiddle? (i.e. feeling lazy)
@ypercube I will have to create another session. I had one earlier but have closed it because I was busy at work
After a week in training, I have comeback to production issues
@bluefeet Works in Oracle: sqlfiddle.com/#!4/5e49c/3
@Dan Do you have a SE/SO question already posted regarding this?
Dan
Dan
17:16
@MikeFal no
@MikeFal because it is easier just to explain
@MikeFal the issue is that programatically in C# it determines the max sequence ID for a record
@ypercube thanks for the demo
Dan
Dan
@MikeFal and adds it to an add statement just before the OUTER APPLY, after the join
but this doesn't seem to affect the results
@Dan It would probably be easier to explain in a question along with making that information available for others who might have this problem.
Dan
Dan
you can see that 'accounting' was spelled wrong the first time so the department was edited,
@bluefeet I don't think it would work out of Oracle though. Postgres and SQL-Server would need this: sqlfiddle.com/#!3/5e49c/2
Dan
Dan
17:18
@MikeFal the problem is I'm not sure how to ask it here since this site is SQL only and I am using C# to determine part of the sequence ID
but that part is really irrelevant as a SQL function could be just as easily used
I am getting stabby
sir i executed first:CREATE TYPE dbo.Integers AS TABLE(Item INT PRIMARY KEY); then i added "@locations dbo.Integers READONLY" to my sp.but getting error Must declare the scalar variable "@locations". — user2878851 3 mins ago
@Dan We're not SQL only, we're databases. Most of us can understand C# code to some extent. Though if you have concerns about it, you can post it to SO and then post the link in here. If you post the question, it makes it much easier to provide detail and allows a better format for helping you out.
Dan
Dan
@MikeFal 10-4 thx
It also makes it visible to more than just the handful of folks in here.
In other words, more eyeballs to get you more (and better) answers
17:21
This is just a chat room, not a forum for questions
@ypercube that makes sense. I was surprised that the nested aggregate worked in oracle
Dan
Dan
@AaronBertrand sounds good thx
@bluefeet It only makes sense because of the SELECT list. 'tis a good little shortcut, but not something you see very often
MySQL probably does half AVG(), half MAX(), then spits out a CHAR :)
@Phil MySQL and its wackiness
17:46
@AaronBertrand I think I should ask @FreshPrinceOfSO to flag some of @bluefeet's comment so I can shift the blame again ;-)
@Lamak hey now!!
@bluefeet joking, joking ;-)
I don't want to get banned again because @FreshPrinceOfSO is playing :)
I mean, seriously...
My blog post (sqlperformance.com/2013/10/sql-performance/…) says: the slides and demos aren't all on the site yet, so here they are to download. How much more do I need to help people?
@AaronBertrand there are these kind of people at PASS?
17:49
@FreshPrinceOfSO yes, I think more and more SO people are getting budget approved somehow
@bluefeet nobody does
@AaronBertrand lol
Actually, that's not fair. The people I met and who were in sessions and asked questions etc. were all much more useful than this guy, it seemed.
Except that @swasheck character.
@AaronBertrand and the guy that had to go to the bathroom
@Lamak well, thankfully, I didn't meet him
17:53
@AaronBertrand still having a conversation with my senior dba about using schema prefixes.
@FreshPrinceOfSO they don't want to use them?
@AaronBertrand thankfully
Tell them I said suck it up and type the extra four characters.
i just feel it's advantageous to use it even if our default schema is dbo .. in the slight possibility we ever start using schemas
i understand there's no need for them now
@FreshPrinceOfSO I had that same argument a few months ago
17:55
@bluefeet how did yours go?
@FreshPrinceOfSO they eventually gave in and allowed me to use them
however we still need to discuss it further
@bluefeet mine isn't a use of them.. it's just adding dbo to code
it's just all database..table
@FreshPrinceOfSO it's just ridiculous to encourage you not to use them. I mean, it is the right way to do it
@Lamak i'm just a junior dba man
Day 6
But you still write your own code, use them
17:57
can't just walk in and be like, well @AaronBertrand says so.. (even though I tried)
and tell him he can edit it out if he wants
@Lamak haha, good one.
@AaronBertrand hey ... that was deliberate ... i didnt want to go all fanboi and start bombing you with questions. i just wanted to be a person. it was nice to see you at the track and not feel like i was a pomeranian yipping at your heels.
But, there's no logic in forcing you not to use them. It's stupid, because you want to use them.
- "Hey man, I wrote those stored procedures you wanted, I also commented them so they are easier to maintain and explain"
- "What?, no, delete the comments, we don't use them"
@swasheck I was totally messing with you!
18:00
@swasheck Giving him an early valentines card may have been a mistake...
@AaronBertrand no ... i know. i just know that i am painfully shy and that can come across as F-U so i try to not talk, but i also want to keep a very low footprint. i dont like just barging into conversations. at any rate ... i dont care what @MikeFal says about you, you're a good guy and a nice person.
@Lamak i'll let you know the outcome
Thanks. We should arrange for more specific hanging out next event. The speedway was as much chaos as the rest of the event.
@Phil the valentine's card was, i thought, a nice touch. it's when i offered him champagne and chocolates that i felt a bit awkward
@swasheck well, yeah, because you forgot the strawberries, you insensitive brute
18:04
now, that's just unforgivable
there's always next year
@swasheck oh yeah how was the speedway?

A: while using table valued parameter getting scalar variable error in sp

Aaron BertrandSeriously? I showed you here that you can't use IN (@TVP) but instead must use a different technique, e.g. WHERE EXISTS: WHERE EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM @locations WHERE ss1 = Location_tbl.Locid) You can also say: WHERE Location_tbl.Locid IN (SELECT ss1 FROM @locations) Or: INNER JOIN @locatio...

@Zane i'm disappointed that it took me so long to get a feel for the car, but it was a blast. also ... if you're ever around a person from SQL Sentry ... you're in good company. some of the nicest, friendliest people i've ever met. don't be scared of them.
i may be biased, though, because of my experience on the track :)
@AaronBertrand sounds good. i'll know what to expect this time.
@AaronBertrand lolz
18:10
@bluefeet currently busy elsewhere. Will have a look in a couple of hours.
@MikaelEriksson that's like years in SO time
@swasheck I fear no man. :)
@lamak years and eons. Rehearsing "The Planets" by Holst.
Ok, welcome to my twit list
how i can do that — user2878851 21 mins ago
@MikaelEriksson most folks only really care about mars
18:18
We are aiming at doing them all in concert in 4 weeks.
It is somewhat difficult today the least.
@swasheck How exactly did you go about winning that again?
This guy has asked 12 questions about the exact same problem.
@Zane Kevin and I gave away 6 slots during our July and August webinars
3 drivers and 3 ride-alongs
Then my boss bought ride-alongs for all of the employees who came along to watch. :-)
That's pretty cool.
PS @swasheck I don't think I ever asked you - what did your lap sheet say? Paul hit 142 mph
@MikaelEriksson ahhhhh this brings me back. lots of fun
18:26
@AaronBertrand 132
Nice
I've gone 138 in a BMW, a long long time ago.
Saturn is lot of counting so I have time to be on the heap :) @enderland
@MikaelEriksson what instrument do you play?
Holy. Cripes.
@user2878851 IT IS NOT AN INT. You need to populate a DataTable. Please go see the example and READ FOR YOURSELF HOW TO DO IT. Since you have now asked at least 10 questions about this single problem, I suspect you need a consultant, not a Q & A site. — Aaron Bertrand 11 secs ago
18:28
@enderland @MikaelEriksson it's fascinating to me how many times Mars has been ripped off by other composers
@MikaelEriksson I played trumpet many moons ago (get it?) and played jupiter/mars a few times
@swasheck no joke
@MikaelEriksson sweet ... i played trumpet
trumpet players unite!
JNK
JNK
I did too
(Played cornet that is)
@AaronBertrand i've not gone that fast in a car ever
18:28
Time for Uranus. Mya....?
@MikaelEriksson yourANUS? or URINEus?
Good god they must go out of their way to find cofee this crappy.
@Zane I roast my own coffee. what you said applies to most other coffee I drink :)
@enderland I grind my own beans or pick up some caribou usually. However I didn't have time to do either of those things so I'm stuck with the cofee at work.
Do you ever find yourself cycling through someone elses code and just find yourself baffled? Just wonder what this person could have possibly been thinking.
@Zane I sometimes do that in my own code.
5
18:34
@Zane yeah. in fairness, i read what i wrote 2-3 years ago and think, "man ... i was so ignorant. i wish someone would have taught me better."
@swasheck I'm not just talking about learning some new stuff. Just the broad thought process about how to accomplish the end goal.
yup. I'm doing that frequently
@Zane yeah. I read through and tried to modify someone else's code once which had literally no debugging or error handling :(
This thing I'm looking at right now is 100% unintelligible it just cycles over itself constantly. It's frustrating.
@Zane show them a better way
That's the plan I have ideas for replacement and my desire to tackle this problem is the reason that I've been hired.
It runs like 500 lines of code to generate a set of rules that apply to each flat file. Why not just store those rules in a table.
It makes no sense.
18:42
@Zane Rules in tables! Unheard of ;)
@ypercube madness
@MikaelEriksson so far i'm on Jupiter and it's still my favorite
@swasheck I was young and dumb. It was 2AM on a deserted bridge in Rhode Island. I wanted to go the same speed as the highway # (route 138 near Jamestown).
@swasheck Now you have me curious. Have to open laptop.
@AaronBertrand ah. that's the story of the bridge. we all have our moments. mine was never speed.
@swasheck Is what these true? Yes it's true this man has no dick.
18:47
@Zane so many good lines
@swasheck Mine was never speed after having one or two drinks on New Year's Eve
@AaronBertrand Worst I've ever done is hit a bridge drop off going 90 in my truck. Massive air. I was 18 or 19 fastest I've ever gone is 100 never had a car nice enough to go faster.
@Zane that happened to me the other day. i was merging onto the highway and a GMC pickup came flying over me and landed on a car in front of the car in front of me
@MikeFal speedball + drinks on new year's eve is notsohealthy
@swasheck I didn't have that much air.
@Zane this was the craziest thing i've ever seen. it was like a movie
18:50
@swasheck I didn't know that had a Hazzard county Colorado.
@Zane yeha
we have an intersection that has quite a few accidents
