Though I think we should not try to create a completely realistic picture but a symbolic picture, so a mixture of both would probably be best

So, as for the board, maybe change the background color

to something more wood-like

or possibly, if that's not too difficult, add a slightly wooden texture, not too much though, it should still look symbolic

that other question looks pretty much the same

chromium is even buggier. There the correct image shows up for a fraction of a second, and then the background (the outer, lighter brown) hides it.

but that might be because it's likely not a stable version of chromium
