A: How do we go about getting the markup plugins we need?

balpha I doubt anybody working at Stack Exchange is going to take time to learn how to write an SGF parser just for a private beta site. Sounds like fun -- challenge accepted :) No, I didn't write an SGF parser, but the arguably most important thing – Sensei-style diagrams – will work ...

nice :)
that's something to work with
the diagrams look a little mangled for me, but it's readable
@mafutrct Which browser? it looks very nice without errors for me
Chrome on W7
There are no errors for me, too, it just looks hmm.. as if it was upscaled
Maybe it's just the missing font smoothing
It's antialiased in most parts
Can I send you a screenshot?
Tha's how it looks for me
I find it looks nicer than the other implementations I've seen
11:15
Yes, looks the same for me.
Let me check with the Sensei's one, 1 sec.
I think you mean the slightly fuzzy lines, that's the antialiasing.
Eew, I forgot how ugly the Sensei's one was. You're right
This one is better.
Certainly ok for now :)

13:19
@mafutrct Lines should be crisper now.
14:07
@balpha yeah looks a little better. If you want to keep working on this, maybe make the font of numbered stones slightly less bold (it reminds me of the ugly Windows 3.1 bold fonts), and the outline of the stones (the thin black line around them) less pixelated (current AA does not seem to work perfectly there yet). Just my opinion though
like that?
Is there no event that's triggered when the editor changes the preview content?
yes, the board is updated in real time in the preview window
need to wait a few seconds
@CodeInChaos noting that's really easily pluggable at the moment. I'm considering adding something; until then, you'll have to live with a timeout
14:25
where can I see the source for the board above?
I tried but couldn't get the move numbers to show correctly
I looked for such an event when hacking together my user script, and finally went with a 500ms timeout(but only on pages with an wmd-editor) which felt quick. Looks like you went with an increasing timeout once nothing gets edited.
or guideline on how to use it (is it just like SL?)
It's just like SL
14:28
@balpha woah, nice
15:15
Does anyone feel like posting a Q about the wall +1 rule? I feel dumb answering my own questions all the time

2 hours later…
17:07
@mafutrct I, for one, don't feel bad about conspiring to form questions at all... what would you like the direction of the question to be?
@jkerian Along the lines of "how far should an extension be?"
This is one of my favorite topics when teaching beginners :)
17:37
sorry.... got distracted by work
@jkerian lol, dont worry, this is not supposed to be a real time chat :)

Q: How far can you safely extend from your own wall?

jkerianWhen extending into what is basically open territory, how far can you extend to increase your influence/moyo, without inviting an invasion?

On that note... during the private beta there is probably few enough questions on the site that we could turn the channel feed on
Or, alternatively, turn on the "Feed screen" at the top, that way it doesn't interfere with the rest of the chat
18:11
Holy moley, the diagram generator is gorgeous
I gotta agree with Fabian, the anti-aliasing makes it look way nicer than the ones we're used to on Sensei's
Mad, mad props to balpha for this
19:01
@jkerian Will have to consult some books to get further examples, should suffice as is for now, I hope
@jkerian What is that? Channel feed?
@AdrianPetrescu Absolutely, it's very nice. Superior to Sensei's already, of course hoping that it's further improved :)
:)
The only thing on my wishlist for the diagram generator at the moment is improved star-point graphic
The big hollow circle is grating to me, it should definitely just be the smaller filled-in circle
SL always got that wrong, and balpha was probably just using that as a model
Oh, that's right. It was a little confusing

Q: Why did black avoid the straightforward capture here?

Adrian PetrescuThe following position is from a 1998 China-Japan friendship match, described in Shuko's book The Only Move by Hinoki Press. $$Bcm31 Why B33? $$ --------------------------------------- $$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | $$ | . . O O O X . . . . . . . . . . . . . | $$ | . . O X X X O . ...

I'd guess its because of the 2nd line attachment at M18
there seems to be a tiny difference in the fight, assuming black hanes on the outside
but far from being worth not capturing that stone, imo
Hmm, never considered M18
I'm sure 'a' is not sente though, there is no way white would answer locally
white would always take the W34 point
well, or attach at m18 :)
Sure, that's why I say it's "almost" sente. There's bigger points on the board, but the aji created at 'b' is definitely worth something
mafu, do you play on KGS? :)
@matutrct Do you play on KGS?
19:20
sure
mafutrct :)
Cool
I'm apetresc
We should play sometime :)
What's the explanation behind your name, out of curiosity?
if someone feels like posting a question... "Why is the first move in the upper right corner?"
sure :)
oh, that's one of my FAQ :)
it's a long story, and I kind of forgot the details
I remember that it was an abbreviation
with the nice feature of being almost impossible to pronounce... and to type, unless you're used to it.
Yeah, I keep having to double-check it ;)
19:46
@mafutrct Whoever owns this channel (no idea who that is), can turn on a feed where we'll see each new question that's posted to the site here in the channel
If we decide that's too spammy, another option is for a little dropdown to show up in the top-left of this chat-frame, that shows the same information, but doesn't interrupt the normal flow of the conversation
@jkerian Oh, sounds lovely
20:14
@AdrianPetrescu Added an answer... I think it's wrong though >_>

2 hours later…
21:55
I like it a lot -- thanks :)
22:12
Does anyone know who is currently able to accept suggested edits?
Since there's nobody with 2000+ rep yet
Only @balpha or something?
@AdrianPetrescu I just accepted an edit, not sure if it was yours. If I remember right I have enough rep to edit posts now anyway. Why?
@AdrianPetrescu Updated the answer :)
I forgot that the original author can accept an edit
I think you need 2,000 rep to accept suggested edits on arbitrary posts
(Or to make edits)
(On others' posts)
I was just curious how that was gonna work, no particular reason :)
Ah, yeah, probably.
22:17
You are definitely the rock star of the Go SE so far
Ooh, thanks for the high-dan confirmation
It's fun :)
Yup
Thinking of people to invite to get more questions in
Particularly concrete, positional questions
welcome. I found it funny that they didn't see it either. maybe the pros were just messing with us :)
Not just "How do I do [x]" types
I'm preparing a few questions right now.
They should be reasonably easy to answer, too, but I'd had to do some research so I figured they'd be a good fit for the site
22:22
Awesome
@AdrianPetrescu I'm pretty certain it is coupled to the general edit privilege, so anyone that can edit can accept a suggested edit. The notification about pending edits is coupled to the mod tools, though, so you need more rep for that.
Gotcha. So 2,000 then?
I have over 2,000 rep on SO but I've never seen a suggested edit by anyone else :(
I guess I need to get the mod tools at 10K
It's only 1000 on a beta site
22:36
wow... that board display widget is very nice
23:15
I am horrified to be unable to find the wall+1 rule in any book
I found extend 3 from a 2 stone wall in Shape Up! but that's all
I'm sure there has to be more....
I think I read it in the introductory series by Jeong Soo-Hyun/Janice Kim
23:34
Yeah, reading the description of that volume, I'm pretty sure it's there
I just had a look, it is somewhat in there.
just the 1->2, 2->3 variant
Yeah
Maybe I was confusing this with what I learned online
I thought I read it in books, too
I remember one great example of black extending 1 too far, white too advantage of that in such a cute way
granted... I'm not sure "if 12, 13" is completely reliable as a guide to when you can't be invaded
Let's see if I can find it.
You mean for large extensions?
23:43
yeah
Certainly, it doesn't work that well for say, > 4
In those cases, global strategy becomes more important
Sometimes you want to play tighter because your wall has a tiny weakness
Sometimes you want to go extra wide because your wall is super thick
LOL
mafu has ~14,300 reputation on all of SE combined
Which the chat room rendered as a "14.3k" under his name
I immediately thought this meant he was 14-kyu
And was extremely impressed that SE had already implemented rank indicators
Alas
I think he's a fair bit stronger than 14k, also :P
haha xD
