> Hypothesis: "Magic that works whether or not you believe in it" is something more magical than scientific, and also very rare among the known magics. Even rarer are non spirit mediated versions of this
"Did you believe in magic that works whether or not you believe in it whether or not you believe in magic that works whether or not you believe in it" =>
do you believe in magic that works independent of belief, including your belief that this statement is true
(not meta enough!)
Actually... regarding the reality hypothesis above, it does not quite hold: Consider the following Verse:
Suppose this is a universe where personal beliefs can be imposed onto reality to produce phenomenon. what happens when multiple people have different outcomes expected when a rock rolls downhill. Which way will the rock roll. Also consider how if these people does not aware of each other's existence, then to them when things deviates from their expectations, then it will look like surprise to them that is unpredictable, exactly what it means to be unknown unknown
(Of course I am ruling out the easy solution where each person live in a subjective reality, thus the rock will always roll in a way to conform to all their beliefs in some relativism fashion)
(Ok this is getting toooo long. Will open a new room to store all of this)

@Shalvenay hey!
Did you ever figure out the NEMA 10 plug situation?

@Green well, I haven't found a 240V-only range yet :P

@Shalvenay good luck!

Hey @HDE if you come in anytime in the near future, I asked a question you may be interested in. Link: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/136693/…

@Gryphon Nice question. I think it might be out of my wheelhouse, though. :-(

Just thought I'd ask the guy who knows about 10^5 times as much as me about space stuff.
And I love the scientific accuracy and detail in your answers.

Let's say 10^1, with an uncertainty of quite a lot. :-)
Also, thanks.

Apparently people like the question though. 3 upvotes and 8 views.
And your welcome, although the praise is entirely deserved.
Hey HDE, could you but the hard-science banner on the question?

2:15 AM
Yup. Done.

Thanks a lot.

No problem.

3 hours later…
5:36 AM
@AndyD273 Most futuristic plots that I've seen where Magic existed had also technology... except for a bunch of post-apo scenario... for obvious reasons ;-)
combining magic and technology can be fun

9 hours later…
2:21 PM
@bilbo_pingouin Agreed, that would be my second favorite genre after science fiction.

3:12 PM
Morning all

3:24 PM
@James Morning.

3:50 PM
@HDE226868 You post confusing things on twitter...

@James Which one?
Reality keeps posting confusing stuff in my reading. . .

@HDE226868 "whimsical astronomy"

Astronomers are whimsical.

@HDE226868 No...fairies and elves and unicorns are whimsical.
Astronomers are giant pocket protector wearing nerds.

I'm wearing a sweater without pockets, for what it's worth.

3:58 PM
@HDE226868 ...quit ruining my attempts to stereotype people.

And I'm drinking hot chocolate in a trendy coffee shop.

@HDE226868 mmm... hot chocolate :)

@HDE226868 No real astronomer visits trendy coffee shops.
(Yeah, I was finally able to use the No True Scotsman fallacy!)

We'll rename it the No Real Astronomer fallacy after you, Hosch.

4:17 PM
Fine by me!

I was going to ask "what about millennial astronomers" but that has too many fantastical elements to be taken seriously.

I am not sure how I feel about this question...
20
Q: Is it harder for an intelligent octopus to live on land, or a human to live in space?

TimI have a race of octopodes with the same intelligence distribution as humans. I want them to “colonise” land to a similar extent as we have “colonised” space; have regular transport between the ocean and land, and have a permanent settlement. Ideally there would also be some form of EVA suit, to ...

@AndyD273 Person who is both a millennial and an amateur astronomer sighs at the mostly deserved reputation of his generation.

@Gryphon Heh. Always happy to meet an exception. Gives me hope

@James Any question for which the top answer contains the phrase "I would definitely feel" is probably opinion based.

4:30 PM
You mean a disaster like Guam tipping over and capsizing because of all the US Marines on it? — DSKekaha 20 hours ago
LOL.

@Gryphon I dunno... It's got stuff to back it up, but until it's tested experimentally it's kind of up in the air.

4:43 PM
@AndyD273 The "up in the air" bit is the problem, for the moment there's no way to objectively tell, or even subjectively tell given we have no experience with the kind of structures your average intelligent octopod might build on the land.

@AndyD273 That's roughly the same as saying humans like getting metal hot and hitting it. Not super helpful in terms of complex habitats and life support requirements.

5:21 PM
@Gryphon It is fun to hit hot metal...just for the record.

@James Its definitely a hobby I'd love to take up when I have the time. I've got a friend with a small foundry, I have a crucifix he made out of aluminum for me. It's not exactly the same thing as you do, but it's really cool to watch.

6:21 PM
Is it possible to turn cast iron into regular iron good for making a blade?

6:47 PM
I hate it when people answer my well-researched question, in which I talk about preventing detection by infrared emissions and radar and say something along the lines of "Remember that detection systems won't be visual, but will use infrared and radar detection." I know about that, that's why I asked the question!

@AndyD273 I'm sure you can...not sure how it works though.
If you try and hammer cast iron it falls apart.
@AndyD273 Yeah, you have to smelt it then blow oxygen across it...

ok cool

2 hours later…
8:57 PM
Hey

@SoraTamashii Hola

What's up?

9:26 PM
@SoraTamashii ...trying to work. Its not going well.
You?

Hey, @SoraTamashii.
@James I'm waiting for an hour to demo my newest feature for our site.
Just a little thing that will make a big difference.

1 hour later…
10:33 PM
@Mithrandir24601 I would have said this in the TL, but given how busy it is there, I'll say it here:
Les Mis is now stuck in my head. :D

@HDE226868 Yay! :D
I'ma going to listen to some of it now

I will, too, when I get the chance.

10th anniversary - why not?
bom baah!

I'm in.

"come in sir, for you are weary"
I wish I could write in musical notation
(in chat)

10:50 PM
That'd be neat.
