I may have an interesting take on the HNQ ivory question. I have staying with me an Alaskan Native who carves indigenous ivory (walrus, mostly if not entirely) for sale as jewelry, art, and tools. He's out selling just now, but I'll pose him the question upon his return.

@Jolenealaska cool!

@James In the old days, I'd have recommended Flash to do your animations. I haven't had to do that kind of work in a long time.

isn't HTML 5 kind of the replacement for flash?

Video format is fairly work intensive (so I understand your frustration). But anything that will let you render a Powerpoint Presentation to video (there's gotta be a free service or two) should do the trick.
@JourneymanGeek It is. I've never done any real work with Flash or HTML5 animation features.

Hey @Shalvenay

11:49 AM
@Secespitus damn I should probably read the whole log

12:16 PM
@Secret I am not sure if I would call that "soft sci-fi", but it sure sounds interesting. No need for noise-cancelling headphones when commuting - though they would still be very important once you are at your destination.
@dot_Sp0T The usual WorldBuilding craziness

well, it definetely is not hard because we don't know of any material that can allow two human beings to pass through each other as if they are immaterial
It is possible it is even off the scifi scale and become pure fantasy

@Secret Ah, yeah, I think I confused that for a moment. What I wanted to say is that it basically sounds like magic
Blissful, quiet magic

But the issue it is trying to do a hyperbole on is how people when on commutes, they rarely talk to each other and are basically lock in their own personal space
so it will be interesting to see what happens if we made that literal
I have not came up with stories yet, cause I am better at philosophy than storytelling

You could make a story where that is the norm in big cities and then someone from the big city goes to a small city and for the first time there are humans on the transport and he thinks about how similar, yet different it is and how weird that nobody wants to chat with him.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

Shard martinwhy would telepathic communication be more difficult than speaking? Human beings have the ability to communicate with their minds. This form of telepathy extends up to a few feet, usually 12-15. They can share thoughts and ideas. Forming thoughts in your mind and sharing them with others should ...

@HDE226868 hello how are you?

So.....
One prototype Orion nuclear battleship vs a giant extraterrestrial spacecraft and four escorts = winner?

@dot_Sp0T I'm doing fine. How are you?

@HDE226868? Any current or near-future materials for use in military-grade Whipple shields?

@FutureHistorian I have no idea.

3:27 PM
Oh.

4:16 PM
@HDE226868 I am doing quite well. Sort of bursting from anticipation for the game 'Surviving Mars' though

@dot_Sp0T I can't say I'm familiar with it. It looks intriguing.

Hmmmmmmmm.
How powerful is 4220000 joules per square metre for a Casaba Howitzer?

4:30 PM
@HDE226868 I am hoping it delivers. The last few games of the publisher / team certainly did (Stellaris, Cities Skylines, ...)
@FutureHistorian your best bet might be the physics exchange or just plain old google

@FutureHistorian are you, by chance, born after the year 2000?

No.
I was born in 1999.
So, a bit close.

Very interesting correlation

4:50 PM
@dot_Sp0T Just out of curiosity, not that it matters, what year were you born?

@AndyD273 '93
the year of the Rooster

ah, k

Hello, This question is on hold for being unclear: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/q/106947/559 Can anyone explain what is unclear about it?

@Mr.Mindor I can't tell you; I voted to reopen it due to there being no comments on what is unclear and the other votes already there - it's a nice question; although it might benefit from a paragraph or two explaining why you don't want the buildings taller than 4 feet and how you expect your people to live in buildings that are shorter than the average human :)

@Mr.Mindor It already has 4 of 5 reopen votes. It's good that you bring this up. I already voted on it in the reopen review queue.

cool. Not my question. it just didn't make sense to me that it was put on hold for the reason it was. (and I have an answer I would like to provide for it.)

Then I'll go ahead and provide the feedback on the Q :)

Q: What to do about near-duplicate answers from unregistered user(s)?

SecespitusIs it feasible to have a literal ivory tower? At 9:42 the unregistered user bromey_jestman posted this answer: A literal ivory tower would be one to two meter tall, simply the tusk of the elephant standing upright, in which a small enough fairy is living. Because: The literary ivory tow...

@Bellerophon i think i might miss on some context here

You seemed to be talking about correlations based on age. I wondered if you were working out some demographic statistics.

6:42 PM
@Bellerophon I was kind of getting the impression that he was curious if certain members were pretty young based on certain behaviors, attitudes, and seeming sense of entitlement. Just a guess though.

Shame. I'd be interested in the spread of age of Worldbuilding members.

Though not interested enough to overcome my laziness and actually work it out myself.

@Bellerophon would it off-topic to ask on meta under the title "market research"?

Probably not.

6:57 PM
I'm having an on/off thing with a women I met about a year ago, she turned out to be born 1999 herself and is displaying most of the same behaviours. So I was curious

7:08 PM
I kind of think all the generational stereotypes are stupid. They make sweeping, often incorrect, generalisations and just increase anger between generations

@Bellerophon stereotypes are two-edged blades
With which I mean that stereotypes are based on common characteristics in exchange for dropping specialities
But they are quite accurate normally

7:29 PM
Even a fairly accurate stereotype usually stokes anger between groups which just seems pointless, particularly because it usually leads to the parts of the group that don't represent the stereotype end up getting dragged in and vilified because of a stereotype which is usually based on a small but vocal part of the group.

That is the lot of generalization

I blame the parents for listening to bad advice from "Parenting experts" who spew tons of BS in order to sell books to the ignorant.
Also the media
The problem with stereotypes is that while exaggerated, they are true enough in high visibility cases that they stick. The good news about the millennial stereotype is that you can get around it by not acting like a spoiled, self important, entitled moron. I have a friend that was also born in that general time frame, but was raised by responsible parents, and strangely doesn't act badly, other than the "normal" occasional mistakes that teenagers make.

7:44 PM
Which years are millenials?
I don't really follow which generation is which.

I'm not sure. Honestly, I think millenials is more an attitude than an age.

@Bellerophon m.xkcd.com/1962

So I'm not a millenial. Good, now I can insult the millenials for being soft, spoiled snowflakes.

Looking at the age ranges in that comic, I know a lot of people who are "millenials", but very few of them act that way. But I also live in an area that more conservative, and most of my acquaintances are pretty big on personal responsibility and instilling that in their kids.
