Google has failed me. Any idea what is an “old Soviet-style paper clip”?

1:27 AM
@JDługosz context might help

L.DutchThis is what I see on my screen Is this a bug or am I missing some underlying info?

Hi, @RedactedRedacted, just passing through, so I don't want to seem impolite, but I have to go. Catch you soon. Have fun!

1:26 PM
@a4android Look at Redacted’s profile page. I think the rep pegged at 1 means he can't come into chat.

ooh, looks like someone did something bad. Is there a place where I can still find the evidence?
@JDługosz in Soviet Russia, paper clips you!

@DaaaahWhoosh well, you can see deleted posts in the sandbox (and/or their edit history), but not deleted comments. And you were here when strangers came here rebuking him for all the flags paging everyone with chat powers.

was I here for that? It doesn't sound familiar, let me go look back
oh, I think that's when I realized something bad might happen, so I left for a bit

@DaaaahWhoosh “don't do it, flags ping lots of people” is starred.

1:42 PM
yeah, I said "I wonder if there's a safe way to test that" then instead of saying "probably not" I left

1:54 PM
@JDługosz As far as I know he can't do anything on the site, not even edit his posts.

@JDługosz It only matters what his parent site on his chat account is, AFAIK. If you're suspended on Site X, and Site X is your parent site, you can't use chat, but if you're suspended on Site Y, you still can. Switching makes things complicated.
(It's worth nothing that here, "complicated" = "gives me a headache".)

btw is it just me or is this question too broad?

@DaaaahWhoosh I count three question marks in the final paragraph. That's not a good sign.

yeah, I just think there are going to be too many possible answers, which will be hard to judge against each other
eh, I left a comment and a VTC, let's see how they turn out

@DaaaahWhoosh You're too broad.

2:09 PM
:(

@DaaaahWhoosh What are your thoughts on this question?

probably too broad, it feels like idea generation but that doesn't exist any more
I'm also having trouble seeing what the question is
oh, it's just "how to grow food underground", right?
yeah, I don't like it. The question needs work
but I don't want to take the time to comment. Does anyone agree with me and want to provide assistance to the OP?

2:48 PM
aaaargh I've been trying to get less sleep the past couple of weeks, and I'm finding it hard to not be angry at everything
I like to think of myself as level-headed, but maybe that's just because I'm the only person in the world who gets nine hours of sleep a night

@DaaaahWhoosh Why are you trying to sleep less?

@sphennings because everyone else does and it's not fair
just imagine if everyone else in the world slept one or more hours less than you a night. Wouldn't that make you wish you could sleep less?

@DaaaahWhoosh Only if you're doing something productive with those extra hours. The extra hours I get to spend mindlessly watching junk youtube isn't worth the sleep deprivation.

@sphennings I'd like to think if I could go from nine to eight hours, I'd have my hour of before-bed reading back again. Which would be time well-spent
and the experiment I'm trying now is to see if I can avoid sleep deprivation. If I train myself that less sleep is normal, maybe it will be

@DaaaahWhoosh You can get down to 4-5 per night during the week with a bit of training.

3:02 PM
@Secespitus exactly, so going for 8 per night should be easy
it's just, now I'm angry a lot
and/or more emotional.

That's only because you are still thinking "I didn't sleep as much tonight as I used to! This is unfair! Now I feel bad!". Stop thinking about your experiment and everything will be fine.

hmm yeah good point

It'll come naturally in ~1-2 weeks probably

I'm getting near the end of two weeks now, hopefully week 3 is better because I've only gone 1/4th of the way to the goal
on the bright side, I haven't gotten any migraines. Which apparently afflict half my family

3:51 PM
Poison just passed up my #1 answer.
And 111 is a prime number (while it lasts)

4:19 PM
A strange way to phrase something: “They were trapped between the Henders predators on one side and no other place to go.”

I can't tell if it's actually wrong or just bad
the programmer in me wants to think they're just being efficient, saying 'on one side' implies that you will be talking about 'the other side' so maybe it's just unnecessary to specify
maybe "they were trapped between the Henders predators on one side and had no other place to go"

5:03 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh good idea, but the context was that the preditor was coming down a tunnel and their other direction was blocked. Thrapped between the preditor and the previously explained obstacle is probably what he was starting to say. This has a Markov-chain humor, like a literary analog of the impossible shapes — locally the words are in a familiar and sensible order, but the patches don’t match up.
A short chapter at the end of the first book was pretty mixed up — a plane flying at 1200 feet over the ocean dropped a bomb that fell 5000 feet before the chute opened? And the speeds don't agree; it's like it was two different flight plans mixed together.

5:37 PM
@JDługosz 111/3 = 37, right? :P

5:50 PM
@Mithrandir24601 OK, half way between two primes.
Although in binary it's a Mersenne prime.

Primality and Mersenne primes are base independant.

2 hours later…
7:44 PM
@sphennings I think he just means that in binary 111 = 7, which is prime. 7 would of course be prime in any base.

@AndyD273 I was thinking of decimal 111 converted to binary. You are right.

@JDługosz Yeah, it did way better than I could hope. So many great answers.
And it got me my second gold badge, for famous question

@AndyD273 Congratulations

@AndyD273 Congrats!

8:05 PM
Thanks!

@AndyD273 and I got one for the answer! Yea, I noticed the question pushed into 9000 views and then seemed to peter out. Congrats on hitting 1000 views!

Got something for you will never forget again: Cars in movies have no headrests

@dot_Sp0T why not?

@dot_Sp0T whoa.

@JDługosz It apparently got a second wind, it's really close to 13k now, and most of those are me refreshing the page to see how many votes I got...
@dot_Sp0T Cause they block the camera from seeing the actor?

8:14 PM
@JDługosz pretty much what @AndyD273 says. Sometimes they even remove the rear-mirror

Now I'll have to keep my eyes open to fine one that does have a headrest

It's not in every movie, but it's done often enough that it ruined my movie watching considerably

@AndyD273 i don't think it multiply counts one user.

The car-chase in the second matrix movie has headrests. If you consider it canon that is

@dot_Sp0T So maybe they put them in when they expect to crash

So Trinity does, but not Morphius...

Well, he's Morpheus after all
Also the Keymaker doesn't get any (head)rest either

@dot_Sp0T Well, they dont remove it, The back seat just doesn't have them. There is one very short scene with Trinity and Morpheus from behind, and trinity has her headrest, Morpheus doesn't, but you can see the holes where it would be mounted.
It just would have made the fight a lot harder if they were reaching around it the whole time

It's also that a headrest usually provides an uglier backdrop than no headrest

Oh, wait, I was wrong, I can see the holes where the back seat headrests would be mounted

8:28 PM
@dot_Sp0T That will haunt me forever

So it's really just weird that they left Trinity her headrest... I wonder why
Oh, hmm. It's because it blocks the view of the stunt driver?

@AndyD273 probably

9:08 PM
I remember on episodes of Jake and Amir where they were driving, they'd use a van. That way, they'd pretend to be driving but would actually be in the middle seats, so they'd have a driver and cameraman in the front seats
I thought it was a clever low-budget trick for driving scenes, but once you notice it it's pretty obvious

@DaaaahWhoosh I’ve never heard of that show.

it was bad, then verying levels of good, then bad again. And now it's over

I should start a series that's 0 budget and dumb as possible.
Like, half hour of the dog napping. Each episode is different location.
But I must say, if she could wear the GPro while playng with us, that would be cool to see.

@JDługosz if the dog snores, it could be an ASMR series
hell, if you just put the mic close to their nose, that might be enough
come to think of it, I wonder if there's people out there who need to listen to someone else breathing in order to fall asleep.

@DaaaahWhoosh why did you watch it?

9:21 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh Had to google that term. That's pretty cool.

@JDługosz I think I enjoyed it more than I'm willing to admit. Plus, the varying levels of good lasted a few years

@DaaaahWhoosh that's crazy.

Now I have to go watch ASMR cat purring videos.

@Secespitus that actually does sound like a good time, but I don't think it would hold my interest

@DaaaahWhoosh It's was cool for a few minutes, but I got carried away by the similar videos on the right side of youtube and it's getting weirder with every video
THanks for introducing me to that term!

9:29 PM
o7
I kinda do want to see if it'd help me sleep to listen to sounds of people/animals breathing
in terms of evolution, it'd make sense to be more at ease when you can hear other individuals nearby

@DaaaahWhoosh Hearing relaxed people/animals should indicate that there seems to be no imminent danger, so yeah, it should help with sleeping. Maybe it helps you overcome your problems with sleeping less. That would be cool.

yeah, it might be worth a shot, though I'd have to work out where the sound would be coming from

10:19 PM
hey there @Mithrandir24601

@Shalvenay rytsas

how're things going?

10:46 PM
@Shalvenay Good thanks :) Currently working away on the essay... How are things with you?

alright here. trying to fathom a political thing actually

11:05 PM
@Mithrandir24601 what essay?

11:20 PM
hey there @JDługosz

@JDługosz about Quantum Key Distribution between ground and satellite(s)

11:56 PM
oh no, not that asmr stuff
