1:54 AM
@James Yeah, what'd'ya want?

hey there @Green

2:06 AM
@Shalvenay Hey! How goes it?

alright here. debating between fractal+erosion terrain gen (using Wilbur) and noise+erosion terrain gen (using Jasper McChesney's approach), as well as trying to figure out what scale heightmaps should be on to be good for stuffing into a GIS, and how to make heightmapped terrain play nice when used as a GIS DEM in terms of geodesy -- I really want to avoid a disaster like the one Paizo created with Golarion -- the only way the Paizo maps of Golarion make sense is if the whole world was flat
I wonder if the last question is one I should throw at GIS.SE?

I think you'll get much better answers there than here.

(i.e. taking a heightmap generated using uniform-distance pixels and stuff it into a GIS)

@Shalvenay A bunch of those concepts in not familiar with so at best what you'll get from me is a guess.
Sounds like a fascinating problem though.

12 hours later…
2:13 PM
oh look, the election ends today

2:25 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh Yep, we should get the results in about 6 hours :)

2:39 PM
Proposed question: What would a spaceship orbiting HDE 226868 see?

2:56 PM
@HDE226868 Space whales with lasers battling space squids with reflectors
@DaaaahWhoosh You voted for me in all three positions right?
@Green I forget now but it was very important.

3:12 PM
lol

3:50 PM
Voting for James "in all three positions" just seems so very wrong.

Wait we have a Michael Kjörling and a MichaelK?
Who are completely different people...?
mind blown

Who'd a thunk there was more than one Michael in the world with a last name that starts with K...

Well that proves that at least two people were born after Michael J Fox...

4:20 PM
@James You've done this kind of thing before and I quote Genie. I'm gonna quote him again.
Did you rub my lamp? Did you wake me up? Did you bring me here? And now, you're walking out on me? I don't think so. You're gettin' your wishes[answers] so SIT DOWN!

@Green RIP Robin :'(
GAH. 3 More freaking hours.

I still have a third vote left, whatshouldIdowithit?

4:37 PM
Me?

@James Go get yourself into a really boring meeting. It'll be fine!

Q: "Close >> migrate to another SE" : please add Physics SE and Biology SE as options

SRMWhen we vote to close a question, one of the options is to move the question to another Stack Exchange. But the only one listed is Meta.Worldbuilding. The two I most frequently wish were there are Physics SE and Biology SE. I would like us to add both of those as options for question migration.

5:14 PM
Two Hours...

6:04 PM
@James It's 3:00 EST, right?
@James YES

6:19 PM
@James Of course I did, but the three million illegal users I shipped in from New Hampshire might've voted differently.
@HDE226868 I like how the whale needs rockets, but the jellyfish can just swim in space.

@DaaaahWhoosh Newton would not be proud.

6:44 PM
Squishy seems to shoot lasers out of it's posterior -- perhaps it doubles as propulsion?

@HDE226868 One down.
@SerbanTanasa Maybe.

@HDE226868 An important question is: what is that jellyfish up to?
I mean, nobody just "passes by to watch a gigantic space fight" without a reason.

@HDE226868 In a moment of sheer insanity, I'm currently reading a paper about orbiting bodies in the Kerr-Newman metric. There are some very, very long equations. I don't think it's worth translating into an answer...

@PatJ My guess, waiting for one to kill the other (or for them to both kill each other) so it can swoop in and devour the loser.

@Mithrandir24601 I don't have the bravery to explore the Kerr metric much, let alone Kerr-Newman!

6:59 PM
@HDE226868 wait...did that already exist?

@James Yes it did.

Wow
I love the internet

@HDE226868 I had to study a bit about the Kerr metric last year. And the Reissner-Nordstrom, but not the Kerr-Newman. I can see why. The equations are... Nasty

Rotation in general messes up any analysis of a potential, never mind bringing in another force entirely.

7:15 PM
If you haven't voted yet, you've got about 44 minutes to join the 471 people who have already done so.

In other words, you've got 43 minutes left to make @James go a little bit nuts by poking him repeatedly.
2

@Green are you implying we can't do that after the election?

happy TZ all

43 minutes to see who did win
Questions
Will there be official inauguration?

7:23 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh Certainly not. We can needle him anytime we choose. I'm merely pointing out that right now he's paying especial attention.

@James ah, I see

What book does new moderator takes oath on?

oh, wait, I mean @Green

Where can I buy tickets?

@James sorry for pinging you

7:23 PM
@PavelJanicek Hitchhiker's Guide of course
and a towel in the left hand

cool!

if you were a galactic hitchhiker, what modifications would you make to your towel?
I think mine would be bulletproof and have a cushion on one end to act as a pillow
ooh, and it'd have fastenings so it could be worn like a cape

Q: Proposal: ALL questions start "on hold" for 1 hour

SRMI do not know if there is a way to adjust the SE software to accommodate this request, but this idea has come up REPEATEDLY in multiple meta discussions, so I'm formally proposing it. ALL new questions start out "on hold" for 1 hour WorldBuilding SE exists on the edge of topics that work for th...

I would modify mine to constantly ping @James just because I love trolling

@James that is a good idea
oh, wait, I mean @PavelJanicek
@James sorry for pinging you

7:29 PM
@James, not sorry for pinging you.

Dang, I am so close to 19K right now.

@Green Jerk
@Green Wad

I want to be called bad name too, @James !

@James did you split it up to make it harder to flag?

Oh to annoy @James, it is so very easy: simple as a ping!
4

7:33 PM
Wait, how do you annoy @James again?

@James it's very simple

I have hunch, that @James is going to be elected as mod and his first thing to do will be to ban us all

oh, wait
I did it again

@James Yes you did.

@DaaaahWhoosh Britney wanna-be
@PavelJanicek Bartholomew J. Erkwad

7:34 PM
@James Thank you

@James, were you trying to get work done today?
@James I can imagine why. There's the moderator election on today.

Why are we annoying @James?

@Green As much as I do any day...so not really

Ways to annoy @James: write ev'rything in Haiku, or you can ping him

@Secespitus Because you fear my greatness

7:35 PM
@James That's news to me

@Secespitus I do not know, but I do enjoy good trolling

@PavelJanicek I enjoy lighthearted trolling.

And I sometimes also enjoy it when it is against me

If trolling is how you all show affection I should win in a landslide.

@James We didn't vote, too busy trolling you.

7:37 PM
in a landslide, everyone loses

@DaaaahWhoosh Except for the guy that kicks the first rock

@DaaaahWhoosh I disbelieve.

@MonicaCellio I can do things willingly and still be sorry about them
I think...

@DaaaahWhoosh I know I can do that

@James like that one time you kicked a rock and started a landslide?

7:40 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh I am not entirely sure but I think I started this one

Wonder if haiku
will be a hanging offence
after the election?
oh on a side note,
I had cherry almond pie.
It was glorious.

There was a young woman called Rhoda
As sweet as chocolate soda
Ah, haiku
Nevermind

Seems like a haiku
Would be short in binary.
Poor sad computer.
@PavelJanicek Yeah. limericks have their place too though. On the "annoying @James" list I mean.
1011
11010
1110

7:56 PM
So, if I write limerick mentioning @James and pretending it is actually haiku ... Do I get extra annoyance points?

@PavelJanicek Yes

Should be about five.
Or maybe its seven points?
No I think its five.

There was young lad with name @James
And I do not know how to continue

@PavelJanicek Shame upon you and your descendants

Shame on me indeed

8:00 PM
@James He may not be Irish or drunk enough?

@James 'countdown theme'

Well, at least our haiku's are safe

Dang...

@James Sorry about that. Next year perhaps.

Huh. That did not turn out how I thought it would.

Looks like you were second place, @James

@ArtOfCode Yeah I think I was one or two places out of winning last time too...SAD

@DaaaahWhoosh That should be the motto of the year 2016: "Huh. That did not turn out how I thought it would."

Q: 2017 Community Moderator Election Results

Jon EricsonWorldbuilding's second moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the new moderator is: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes! For details on how t...

Yeah, I guess I forgot that mod score counts a lot more than chat participation in these elections.

lotta people vote purely based on the number, yeah

well, I guess it's certainly not a bad choice, and now @James has more time to be the chatroom mod

8:31 PM
Our three main contestants were three very good contestants, that's all.

1 hour later…
@AndyD273 I've watched 6 seconds and my answer is: No

Well settles that then

I'll be fair - I'm still watching it and could change my mind
The bit at ~40s in is pretty decent
@AndyD273 So, the first few seconds are very much not HEMA - it consists of wildly swinging swords about, which is no more HEMA than running into someone flailing your fists is boxing
Taking the actual fight to start at 20s:
Footwork is non-existent - they're walking.
26s: Guy in the cream/beige suddenly adopts a posture that looks a bit like a defensive sport-fencing stance - not quite HEMA. But not utterly ridiculous either. Guy in the black seems to have no idea what to do with his shield. Or sword

10:05 PM
hehe

This is promptly demonstrated at 27s when he gets hit with cream guy's shield. This bit is reasonable. Demonstrated again when he gets hit twice more in rapid succession. But they're both still walking instead of using proper stances and both still flailing swords around
Cream guy crosses his feet at 32s. This is wrong
Massive choreographed attack at 35s. Very bad

Hmm, so I wonder if they are some other kind of fighter and they just decided to throw in swords and armor just for the fun of it?

The next few seconds (the grappling) seem reasonable, so they might have had some hand to hand combat experience before
@AndyD273 This is HEMA: youtube.com/…
Although having said that, it's tournament HEMA
I like this one: youtube.com/…
~3.21 Beautiful guard

1 hour later…
11:29 PM
@AndyD273 I will say grappling/wrestling is a big part of armored combat. Swords and shields considerably less so. But HEMA is usually more about unarmored fighting; they just wear armor so they don't die.
I'm really wondering how historical those shields are. They're too small to offer full protection, and bucklers usually aren't strapped to the forearm. Plus with that much armor I don't get why they wouldn't just use longswords, but maybe I'm biased.

It really depends what you are fighting
the tiny bucklers give enough flex to block and move
you must remember big heavy weapons don't change trajectory so much, so putting a chunk of metal in the path is pretty reliable [source, done a tiny bit of HEMA]

Oh, bucklers are definitely effective. I'm just saying that in the video Andy linked, the shields they're using don't actually look like bucklers

hey there @DubberRucky and @DaaaahWhoosh

o/ but I really should be going

@Mithrandir24601 no THIS is HEMA youtube.com/watch?v=uz40dYDj4l8
