One mol/second of free neutrons would be quite a weapon. Calculating… 21 megawatt-hours of power, each second, released from the neutron decay.

12:21 AM
@JDługosz one mol/minute puts us at 300kWh of power, which is still quite sizeable from a benchtop apparatus, but not nearly as unreasonable

@Shalvenay If you can harness the energy to run the apparatus, you only need to make up the under-unity portion. But, you are using the neutrons, and this will eat some of that power. Your in-story narrative could note that the stuff starts getting hot as the input element is consumed, and that’s how they monitor it.
@Shalvenay I wonder where you’re getting the concentrated duterium?

@JDługosz background takes care of that -- the char in question could basically buy it from the corner store haha

@Shalvenay I thought this was a steampunk kind of thing.

@JDługosz haha, no. more "far-future ET" :) but I forgive you for that -- lab apparatus tends to take on a slightly steampunk appearance no matter what the era :P due to how much of it has to be custom-fabricobbled for the job at hand

@Shalvenay Just from what I recall skimming the discussion earlier.
Are you interested in Peking Opera?

@JDługosz not an operatic type

1:00 AM
My current project is distilling the photos and video from Saturday.

@JDługosz (backgroundwise -- the char in question comes from a society which got fusion to break-even long ago. fusion reactors for them are probably as common as a portable genset in our society :)

And a society docile enough to allow such power in the hands of the unwashed masses?

@JDługosz or that said character might not be so low-status despite their appearances...

Here’s a photo before the show. My wife’s the one playing the pipa. photos.dlugosz.com/2017/2017-Nov-18-UTD/i-mgXJ3JQ/A

Anyone help explain the Sagnac effect? worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/98266/…

3 hours later…
8:50 AM
@JDługosz I can (I still remember the difficulty of building a sagnac interferometer...) but no guarantees it'll happen until this evening

@Shalvenay Hey!
