A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

Anonymous InquirerIs there a possibility for electricity to go through a computer screen? The AI must have sent something tiny enough, like electrons or something conductive, into the computer screen. Before sending in the conductors, it made tiny holes through the screen. The AI temporarily implanted very tiny...

1 hour later…
2:59 AM
Liquid like ice. Perhaps useful in designing "ice lava" for scifi planets

3:19 AM
@Secret interesting.

10 hours later…
Ash
1:36 PM
Is there somewhere onsite to park a draft question until I decide if it's worth asking or not in its present form?

@Ash there's a sandbox question?

@Ash try the sandbox? And it’s “its”.

Ash
@JDługosz I think I've finished the question I don't necessarily need any feedback I just don't think it will be a good fit for the site and want to sleep on the whole issue. It has been my impression that the Sandbox is for questions one feels still need work. Is that wrong, can I just park unfinished material there too?
@JourneymanGeek Not sure it constitutes a Sandbox question, I'm still a little unclear on the role of the Sandbox.

@JDługosz is a mod here soooooooo
You can ask him. I just prop up the bar ;p

Ash
@JourneymanGeek Fair enough, I'll wait for him to get back to me.

1:50 PM
@Ash so why do you need to “park” it? Just post if and when you are ready.
@Ash well, you’re still considering, so why not sandbox? Get feedback on “is this a goid fit” and perhaps find out how to make it fit better.

Ash
@JDługosz Want to park it for the "night" before making a prat of myself with it but I've put too much work to want to risk losing it.

2:46 PM
Don't know if anyone here likes audiobooks, but todays Audible daily deal is a steal. $4 for The Fold by Peter Clines‌. I really liked it a lot.

I still want to try getting into audiobooks, but I feel like I've got too much of a book backlog already
I just finished the Three-Body Problem, and of course only at the end do I realize it's part of a trilogy
oh, actually, now I can finally respond to this with a 'yes'

3:01 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh What did you think?

I enjoyed it. There was a bunch of cool sciency things, and luckily I didn't read the back of the book so I didn't really know what was going on for most of it

The Chinese perspective on things was pretty interesting too, and that bit about the cultural revolution was chilling.

yeah, I don't think I'd ever heard of the Cultural Revolution before, now I'm wondering why not

The Chinese government is really good at repressing things. I think Mao killed around 3 times as many people as Hitler

well, it definitely was a really interesting way to start a sci-fi novel. And it made Ye Wenjie into a really interesting character

3:10 PM
Yup, made her pretty sympathetic, even at the end

yeah. I'm still angry that the book turned out to not finish the story, but I enjoyed it enough to want to read the next two

I've read the second one, and the third is in my queue. I find that i have to split series up or I get overloaded. I didn't used to be that way.

hmm. I think for me it depends. I'm planning on reading Blue Mars eventually, but those books are just such a slog for me
plus the second one ended well. If a book ends well, then I don't necessarily want to keep reading

Hmm, now that you mention it, I kinda deal with the same thing
Also, comedy is a lot easier for me to binge than serious/drama

hmm, yeah. Serious things take their toll, you gotta recover from those
I guess now I have to decide if I should take a break from this series, maybe it's finally time to go back to the Mistborn series
I suppose it'll depend on if I want to read in the next two days, while the book is in the mail

3:24 PM
I really should type out my whole reading queue. Maybe see about putting them in some kind of order

I have a physical reading queue. It's a stack of books on my nightstand. Though I think mine is out of order too

4:03 PM
So apparently my queue is a bit long... 64 books as far as I can tell. I think this is all of them.
Not in any particular order

My reading list is 1 book long.

@Bellerophon That makes choosing books a lot easier

Yep. Once I have read this one I will buy some new books and then my reading list will grow.

I just pick them up when they are available, and put them in my queue. I go through books very fast though, so this isn't as long as it seems

@AndyD273 you haven't read Harry Potter before? Or Hyperion?

4:08 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh I've read Hyperion, but it was a very long time ago. It felt very disjointed, and now I'm curious if it's like I remember. I read the first harry potter book, so now I'll try the others
There are handful of rereads on this list

from what I recall of Hyperion, it was basically Canterbury Tales in space

Andromeda Strain, Jumper

I would like to hear your thoughts on Harry Potter. I want to know what it's like outside the context of reading it as it came out

It was just weird, where the main character (the Shrike) isn't consistent from story to story.

@AndyD273 I thought the first book was great because the Shrike didn't really factor in all that much. The second book did start getting inconsistent though
or, at least, it got weird. I felt like it ended strangely.

4:16 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh The Shrike was the only thing that tied those stories together even a little. You got the anthropologist that come to study the people who worship the Shrike and have the crosses implanted under their skin that rebirth them. You got the guy that gets seduced by the Shrike pretending to be a woman... It was never the same from story to story... It really started strangely too. I'm curious if 15 year older me will make any more sense of it.

@AndyD273 yeah, I mean, the Shrike stuff was confusing, but what I mean was that that's not the part I focused on. In the first book at least, I was more interested in the worldbuilding, and how each character had a different perspective on the world
the soldier, the detective, the diplomat, the artist, the priest. They all saw different parts of the world, which made it feel so much more alive

@DaaaahWhoosh I'll give you my thoughts as I read them. The first book was interesting. I don't mind reading YA as long as it's well written, so I won't hold that against it. I think it started pretty strong, introducing the characters. Some bits were a little silly, but not enough to really bother me. Over all it held up enough for me to check out the others

@AndyD273 I think it definitely gets better as time goes on. I was looking through the first one for an answer on SFF, and was surprised how bad the writing seemed to be
(the question was "why didn't Ron make Harry the king" and my answer was "because he never intended to actually finish the game")

4:33 PM
Yeah. It wasn't the greatest thing I've read. It wasn't terrible. Maybe listening to it helped somewhat.
The thing that turns me off of a book the fastest is foreshadowing. I don't mind spoilers all that much, but foreshadowing when I can predict what is going to happen and know I won't like it is hard sometimes

I would think that foreshadowing would be better than spoilers, since you at least get the smugness that comes from figuring it out yourself

I don't know why it is. I'd almost rather have someone spoil the whole plot than drop some ominous single line of dark foreboding. Mostly I think it's because foreshadowing is usually about something bad happening, while spoilers are more general
I'm sure there are exceptions on both sides.

well, either way I do hope the entire series hasn't been spoiled for you yet, I feel like a big thing about the books is their surprise endings
Dumbledore is Harry's father, Ron and Hermione are actually the same person, that sort of thing
ooh, and Nearly Headless Nick was a ghost the whole time!

4:50 PM
Heh. I think the only spoiler I've caught over the years is the "Snape kills Dumbledor" one, but by and large I've avoided most of them just by not knowing (or really caring) who the characters were up till reading the first book. So we'll see
I will say that spoiler did shape my view of Snape in the first book, of course thinking he was the bad guy, but I think that's what you're supposed to think anyway, so it probably didn't change things much

yeah, Snape is always supposed to feel like the bad guy. He just goes back and forth between "he's actually a bad guy" and "he's just a dick"

So that was kind of a nice plot twist. Oh, so he's not evil, just an ahole with some weird issues

yeah, I actually remember exactly where I was when I read that part. For some reason I was in a bank.
I was probably like 10 years old at the time, I think my dad was doing bank stuff and I was reading to keep myself busy, but then I got to that part and it blew my mind

Snape is actually Dobby.
2

@Bellerophon it all makes so much sense now.

5:07 PM
Is Dobby a character in the first book? I think it's the goblin looking creature, but I don't remember it being in the first book

nah, he's in the second one
he is a house-elf, which is a species you don't know about yet

ok, gotcha.
I'm almost done with Earth Core by Scott Sigler, then I think I'm going to do After On by Rob Reid, then probably HP book 2.

understood, I can wait. I'd almost recommend you read one HP book a year, but that might be unnecessary.

The Goblin in book 1 is Griphook.

5:40 PM
Hmm... I’ve got a question in the sandbox that I genuinely can’t decide whether to post or not, as it’s either really stupid or painfully difficult, and I can’t work out which...
If anyone has any thoughts i’d Love to hear ‘em (the question about living on a god)...

5:57 PM
hmm, seems almost too broad, but I think it could potentially get good answers
yeah, I think it'd work

6:09 PM
@JoeBloggs What question about living on a god?

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

Joe BloggsWe live on the body of a god. How does gravity act? We live on the skin of a cosmic being, fleas being transported through eternity. The being (variously called The One, Allfather, The Lord of Days and Barry) is a gigantic human, mysteriously held against it's own gravitational pull by what we c...

Not sure if I chose the best duplicate, but there's so many that I don't care; thanks for voting fast: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/93844/…

Interesting question.

@dot_Sp0T the new one implies the second moon wasn't always there, that seems unique

6:25 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh just doesn't make it a duplicate; question is still a oneliner with no effort aside from : I wonder what happens when

@Ash are you trying to say that you don’t have a way of saving a text file on your device? Try Google Docs or Evernote.

@DaaaahWhoosh Thinking of making it more obvious that interesting points and general reasoning around the concept are acceptable answers. Reckon that will make it too broad or more appropriate?

@JoeBloggs I'd say avoid 'interesting points' but maybe keep 'general reasoning'

@DaaaahWhoosh Fair. General reasoning leads to interesting points, I suppose. I’ve got to admit I’ve done an inordinate amount of wondering about whether or not you there’d be a lagrangian point below the.. erm.. gusset...

lol oh yeah. I think it'd only work if they had their hands in the air
(assuming I'm interpreting your euphemism correctly)

6:32 PM
Just made a sick curry
Also about the question @DaaaahWhoosh have you read current answers?

I just skimmed them

CaM
6:47 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh skimmed them. You mean you just... wait for it.... Wooshed past them?

@CaM I see what you did DAAAAAAAAAAAAH

CaM
:)

1 hour later…
7:51 PM
What exactly are people expecting from us when they state themselves that their question is too broad?

@dot_Sp0T pity
mercy, perhaps
they should know better

Never show mercy. It is a sign of weakness.

Never do sign-language. Because mercy is.... something.
I also made cookies.

CaM
8:09 PM
Never show Mercy. Mercy is shy. She likes to hide behind the curtains and shoot people with her crossbow.

Never not add milk to cookies, because not adding milk will make them slightly brittle and it's a shame.

never tempt me with cookies... because honestly it's just a mean thing to do
3

Never mention @James just because you could mention him.

8:29 PM
@dot_Sp0T : I generally say things like that in sandbox if I’m stuck on how to ask a question in a way that will get meaningful answers or I’m worried it’s too broad for general acceptance (given that it’s mostly subjective), but may be interesting in a slightly pared down format.

@JoeBloggs well it's alright in the sandbox. The sandbox is a testing ground for potential questions. But people posting questions and even writing in the question body that they do not expect the question to stay open. What's the intention behind that?

Stack Exchange Random Term of the Day: dream wee

@DaaaahWhoosh I am not sure what disturbs me more: The fact that her parents carried her to the toilet and made her pee while she is asleep, or the fact that they couldn't themselves think of just making her take over and walk to the toilet instead of being carried...

yeah, I mean it does seem like a no-brainer
"okay, we've successfully potty-trained our child. We just have to carry her to the bathroom every night for the forseeable future"

Maybe that's the future we'll eventually end up with

8:42 PM
honestly a dream wee system sounds great
like, if there was a robot that could do it
just carry me into the bathroom when I need it, then carry me back and tuck me in

How about just walking there yourself?

nah, too difficult. The people of the future can't be expected to live with such torment
it's not a dystopia, it's a pisstopia!
2

@dot_Sp0T: People do that?
@DaaaahWhoosh : I can’t decide if horrifying or nice...

@JoeBloggs I am just about to actually

Hello all

8:46 PM
@dot_Sp0T The concept of a dream wee, I mean. Not a pisstopian future. That just sounds awful.

@JoeBloggs I think it's worth it, for the pun

@dot_Sp0T: if you expect it to be closed then what’s the purpose?

@JoeBloggs you lost me there

@DaaaahWhoosh : See, maybe my imagination is just too vivid, but i immediately envisioned something like blade runner, but more yellow.

the new sequel looked pretty yellow to me

8:49 PM
@dot_Sp0T: I think we may have got the ‘too broad question’ and ‘dream wee’ streams crossed. No pun intended.

@JoeBloggs did you consume any spirits tonight?

@DaaaahWhoosh: Yeah... do replicants dream of electric wee?
@dot_Sp0T : not yet.

@JoeBloggs then do that please

oh no and the original movie it was always raining... I'm never going to think of it the same

Harrison!! No!!!
That amused me far too much.

8:52 PM
lol me too

And now, to sleep, perchance to be carried to the bathroom by a gentle Android.

\o

9:33 PM
How does one consume a spirit? I assume it involves pentagrams and rituals.

9:47 PM
@Bellerophon and ice and tonic water.
Hmm… goodreads.com/book/show/17797577-geek-love looks interesting. But I hesitate putting it on my Birthday wish list.

10:45 PM
@Bellerophon Pretty sure you forgot blood. Extra virgin.

10:58 PM
@Secespitus I assume you mean a bloody Mary then?

hey there @Mithrandir24601

@Shalvenay Rytsas! How're things? I'm just about to start Bitter Seeds with some nice white tea :)

alright , as for you?

@Shalvenay Pleasantly happy and relaxed :)

cool, cool.
I still do wonder what Daenrys would be thinking if she got picked up and plopped into the modern world (probably out in the countryside somewhere, tho -- not going to completely blow her mind from jump ;)

11:13 PM
Probably try and find some problem with it so she could conquer it :P

Q: A World Building iPad App

Isabella ChenDoes anyone have an idea for an app that would be really useful for world builders? I’m thinking of creating an iPad app that allows users to upload a map and plot points on the map, at different points on the timeline. This seems quite obvious to me, but are there other ways of thinking about co...

11:36 PM
The tea, by the way, was lovely :)

@Mithrandir24601 nice
@Mithrandir24601 I wonder what thing she would run into that'd blow her mind the most...?

@Shalvenay If it was evening or night, possibly city lights?
and the size of the buildings?

@Mithrandir24601 maybe?
@Mithrandir24601 and yeah, that, I reckon. some of the things we put in our buildings these days would probably boggle her mind

@Shalvenay Oh yeah, definitely

@Mithrandir24601 never mind some of the vehicles

11:40 PM
@Shalvenay and the planes. Rockets!

@Mithrandir24601 ah yes. obligatory:

Show her a video of the ISS in orbit?

@Mithrandir24601 that'd be pretty good too
on a different note...going back to the counteroffer from a few days ago, which of the Westerosian nobles do you think'd be most receptive, and which the least?

@Shalvenay Hmm... That's... A good one... A Meister would be pretty receptive, so I suppose Sam counts for that one. Although Euron Greyjoy would probably be up for it. Least might be Theon. I think he's done with adventuring
Yeah, most would be Euron Greyjoy, least Theon

@Mithrandir24601 yeah, I could see a Greyjoy being up for such, given their nautical background and all
what would Theon's rejection be like? just a "no deal" or would he get angry or nasty about it?
also, who would give the nastiest rejection?

11:50 PM
@Shalvenay It depends on how it's phrased and when it occurs really... At the right moment (when he's told no-one cares about him kind of thing) he'd probably be receptive, but right now, he just wants his sister back and (I think) to sort his own life out, but he's not a nasty person, so probably just a 'not interested' unless pushed. I'm really guessing now though

@Mithrandir24601 yeah, "not interested" wouldn't bother the lass in question much. I'm curious as to who'd be most inclined to get angry/nasty about such though

@Shalvenay Ha! Easy - Cersei. She'd probably try and kill your character to take the ship for herself

@Mithrandir24601 heheheheh. that'd be a really bad plan

@Shalvenay I figured that :P

between "Don't pick a fight with someone who buys their thermonuclear warheads by the production lot" and "I don't duel." -- I think both Cersei and her champion of choice would be in a heap of trouble -- her best fate would be her waking up next to the Mountain in someone's tender ministrations, wondering what the heck happened to them both
her worst? my character coming home with some green, glassy trophies

11:55 PM
@Shalvenay I could just imagine the arrogance: "That oddly shaped thing. They call it, what is it? A nuke? How pathetic. Kill them all"

@Mithrandir24601 and then Cersei is waking up to a front row seat to all her land getting wiped off the map.
"You apparently somehow forgot that my ancestors forged starfaring warships from scrapmetal and orbital debris." (Sebestior engineering skills FTW)
