Q: How shall we celebrate our birthday?

Monica CellioWorldbuilding will be one year old on September 16, 2015. We've got a great community here and lots of great content, so if any bunch of people could come up with fun ideas for how to celebrate our first birthday, it'd be this community. :-) Thoughts?

Since this question's more a discussion question, I figure chat is the most appropriate site to discuss the following question as it's highly subjective.
How alien can a alien be made without making them "too alien" while still making them alien enough that they can't be confused for humans and are different enough that they would come from another planet? I am not asking for alien designs, simply to what degree of "alienness" would you consider "sufficiently alien" while not being so alien that they are difficult to relate to.

Thats nice question which has two answers
1st: Writers one. Decide how you want your alien to look like and then design a planet which would plausibly produce such alien
2nd: Worldbuilding: Design a planet where your alien works and try to determine what type of intelligent life would it produce
The second one has a drawback: You are most certainly to produce an alien which is "too alien"

What would you consider "too alien"?

thats psychology type of question
have look at the movie "Alien" - the alien here is definitely "too alien" and would be too scary to work with if we are about to form an alliance with them

So they can be physically alien, but still be relatable if they are psychologically anthropomorphic?

I did not get the question, but I think its actually vice versa
The humans would rather form alliance with Cuddly Bears type of aliens, even if their psychology do not match ours. Just because they are cuddly
And on the other hand, dealing with "Alien" movie aliens would be hard even if they followed exactly the same rules of living as we do

7:21 AM
So how physically alien could a alien get but still be relatable?

Not that much, actually. Have a look at this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_effect
(And thats one of the reasons why "good aliens" look as something you can relate to and "bad aliens" look really ugly in the movies)

Would a alien that is uncanny valley be less relatable than a alien that doesn't really resemble any animal on earth, but doesn't look threatening or ugly? (Like say, a octopus)
(Of course a octopus is a animal from earth, but it doesn't resemble anything on land)

I think the one which does not resemble any animal on earth, but looks not dangerous would be better to work with
BTW, I studied biology on high school, so just a side note: Our animal range is really huge and some animals on Earth look really really alien like
But I think it is good worldbuilding question: How would people relate to this alien? (with provided picture or detailed description)

Q: Accidentally deleted low ranked question. Now what?

Pavel JanicekQuestion to discuss: http://worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/22836/what-would-happen-if-affirmative-action-activists-had-free-reign Now got deleted, thanks to me. I think its bad question. I think it is troll question. Thats why I did click "Delete" on it. I got told, that next 9 vote...

@InterstellarFascist As long as the alien doesn't trigger anything that our brains identify as "threat" and doesn't lie in the bottom of the uncanny valley, then it should be workable. Anything in the uncanny valley just comes across as creepy to really creepy.

How was everyone's weekend?

Really good. Ate way too much candy (Seriously, Welch's Fruit Snacks are gonna kill me.)
I had a few 200+ days this weekend too which I'm really happy about.

@Green I never seem to get here on the weekends...to much real life to manage...you know...kids.

@James Ah, that would do it. I have neither wife nor kids.
Although, on the scale of things, a weekend with kids that you love is a bit more valuable than twiddling Internet Numbers.

@Green Oh for sure...though on occasion it would be a nice trade...lol

4:13 PM
I just had this idea; what do people think about it?

A: How shall we celebrate our birthday?

Monica CellioHow about a "share a glimpse into your world" week? If you've asked questions here it's probably because you have a project -- maybe a full-on novel/game/script/etc you're in the midst of, or maybe a more early-stage idea. Either way, would people be willing to share a (non-contract-voiding, no...

Oh, I see that in the time it took me to bring it here somebody has already upvoted. Cool. :-)

I want to see if I can write a question that is a worldbuilding meta question that doesn't belong on MetaWB.

Like a meta-meta-WB question?

Yeah, though I want to avoid the "Meta-all-the-way-down" problem.

So you've read GEB?

I own it but it's really hard to just sit down and read it all at once. I've mananged a few chapter so far.

Yeah, same for me. I'm halfway through. In two years...

5:25 PM
What I've read so far is fascinating. A lot of my books are packed away so I haven't made any progress in the last couple of months.

Recently moved?

It's complicated. I moved out of the lease I was in with intent of moving to Seattle sometime this summer but that hasn't worked out yet so most of my stuff is still in storage. When I get to Seattle, I'll be able to start reading again.

Ah nice, welcome to the great North West when you do make it.
I'm in Portland Oregon.

Thanks! I'm really looking forward to it. I've been planning the move since November.
Job hunting from the other side of the planet is hard!

Of course most of Washington is on fire right now... But that's not typical.
What type of job?

5:33 PM
Software quality or Systems Architect.
The QA position is easy to "prove". For the systems architect, there's a bit more reading between the lines in my work history.

5:53 PM
@Green A lot of IT jobs require reading between the lines it seems...

Ain't that the truth.

So, Amazon?
I have a friend there. Doing mostly back end stuff.

I've heard less than pleasent things about working there. I don't know if that applies to just the employees who work in the warehouses or if that extends to the tech people too.

Yeah, he liked it for the first year, but now does not enjoy working there.

I've been at my current job for four years and like it. I'd like to not skip around between companies if I can help it. Bouncing around is okay if I'm a contractor.

6:05 PM
The faking martians question reminded me of this... youtube.com/watch?v=vITJdaJ4xxM

@Green What's your education in?

Bachelors in Computer Science but I have a long history in IT too.

Ah, ok. Well Portland is also an excellent place to look.

I am a config engineer...my degree is in philosophy...and an MS in international relations...

We have Intel.

6:08 PM
Super useful education...

And people seem to like working there.

Release engineer is a fun job IFF you are allowed to automate all the things.
I'll have a look at Intel.

@James Sounds like you have more to talk about at parties at least.
@Green Also, we don't have sales tax while Washington doesn't have income tax.
Hard to say what's better.

I prefer the sales tax approach.

I certainly enjoy knowing what I'm going to pay for something without doing math.

6:13 PM
But it depends on how Washington makes up the difference. Sales tax is 10% and I don't know about property taxes. Eh, we'll see.

Property taxes are different. I pay those because I own a house.
You can usually rest assured that you're getting taxed at least the legal maximum.

@Samuel Super substantial debates from which nothing tangible will ever coalesce. :)

I just barely gross six figures, so I have to pay about 45% of it to the government.
Because, you know, we need more aircraft carries and fewer space missions.
@James Isn't that what the internet is for?
Or most conversations...

@Samuel The Internet is for telling people their wrong. (or downvoting them. Either way.)

@Green That's wrong.

6:19 PM
Prove it.

lol

@Green Because the other thing its for, you meant to write "they're"

it's*
Damn it.

They're wrong.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH!

6:21 PM
Touché

@Samuel, do you happen to remember which question it was that you answered with "throw a big rock at the planet"? It was in the last month or so.

38
A: What's the most efficient way to destroy civilization from orbit?

SamuelHit the planet with an asteroid. Guide a 100 km wide asteroid at the planet at around 10 km/second and there will be a global extinction event. Anything larger than 3 km can cause extinctions, so the 100 km figure is simply to make sure the job gets done right.

@Green Oh, you answered that too.

Thanks. I'm gonna use that for the "Claim a country in space" question.

@Green I gave the diplomatic peaceful method. I know those are not popular here.

@Samuel Less flashy for sure...

6:31 PM
I liked your answer.

you know...cause there aren't any explosions...

I would recommend Musk uses a hyperloop launcher.
All the research for it has been a front for this orbital bombardment space station.
@James Exactly, and there aren't finger-pyramids of evil or a cackling supervillain.

What do you think it is about "fire from the sky" that has such a visceral reaction? An answer more nuanced than "Because it's raining death, stupid." would appreciated. :)

Also "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is recommended reading for that scenario.

@Samuel don't talk about @bowlturner like that!
...ok go ahead.

6:38 PM
@Green It's the whole attack from above thing I suppose. Natural blind spot.
Also that book "Fire from the Sky" is a good one.
Oh wait it's called "Fear the Sky"
Damn, I was not expecting that kind of expansion of an Amazon link.

The space ships those aliens are flying sound like torchships. If so, then earth is in big big trouble.

Yeah, they talk a lot about those in this description but they don't show up in the first book.
Beyond basically that description.
Of course, if you buy that book through that link SE gets a cut now.

That's disappointing.

Since they modified my link.

6:55 PM
@James I don't make finger pyramids! much...

Lies!!! Heck I make them while sitting at my desk thinking about the best way to make a developer's life more difficult...

Ack! your one of them! get back!

7:11 PM
I aspire to be a member of IBM's fabled Black Team. I'm one of those :)

a necessary evil. "Thank you sir, may I have another!"...

Q: Votes remaining for deleting a question is (probably) wrong

SamuelIn this answer Michael Kjörling told us that a question that is not well received requires three close votes to be closed. That answer was to a question about why the question the OP voted to delete was immediately deleted. I believe the vote count remaining for deleting questions is not being r...

7:47 PM
@bowlturner I only bite when they make the same stupid mistakes multiple times.

8:29 PM
I assume that most people here read XKCD's What If?

The blog, but not the book.

@Green xkcd makes such a regular appearance around here he should get author credit on most answers and questions.

I was just responding to a comment about how gamma radiation from the sun wouldn't glare-out a leaky ship reactor. It reminded me of the lethal neutrino question what-if.xkcd.com/73
where he says "A supernova, seen from as far away as the Sun is from the Earth, or
The detonation of a hydrogen bomb pressed against your eyeball?
"
"...against your eyeball..." Contented grin Astrophysics is so very much fun!

@Green Thats an amazing way to explain that by the way.

I mean, it's this tiny tiny thing in front a gigantic spotlight. That's like trying to see a gnat flying (and somehow how not frying) in front of stadium lights when you're standing 5 miles away. It's never going to happen.
@James Thanks
sigh people that downvote and don't say why.

8:50 PM
@Green That can be frustrating

Well, you can see which of these people happen to be active at the moment.
Uhh, beside me.

@Samuel oh...you are so busted lol

Why you no upvote!?

Yeah, I think I just forget to vote unless something is really terrible or really good.

Y U no upvote!?
(Memes have never been a strong point.)

8:55 PM
Also, on questions I answer, I have a bias. So the other answers need to be really good.
And, as you may have seen, I answer a lot of questions.

I tend to upvote questions that I answer. If the answer was good enough for me to spend the time to answer, the OP deserves some love.

I have the same view on downvoting other answers for questions I answer though.
Oh, I upvote the questions.
Usually, if I remember.

I usually let other people do the dowvoting. Usually one downvote is enough to indicate a problem.

Well, you're welcome then.
:)

Anyone seen HDE today?

9:06 PM
Nope.
Also, I just looked. I didn't start upvoting questions I answered until like four months in.
I ran out of votes for today correcting that error.

@Samuel lol well done.

Isn't there a badge for running out of upvotes?

2 badges, one for 30 votes, one for 40.
you need to vote on at least 12-13 questions to be able to reach 40
@Samuel it takes a couple hours for them to be awarded

Ah, well I maxed it, so I suppose I'll get both.
Still working on Epic badge.
43/50 days maxed rep.

9:13 PM
nice. I'm only at 19/50.

I suppose we could correlate that with productiveness at our day jobs, but I'd rather remain ignorant :)

@Samuel, I suspect the same.

sometimes ignorance IS bliss...

@bowlturner About 96 percent of the time by my calculations

@James HA! wait until your kids are teenagers, you're going to WISH for more ignorance... ;)

9:24 PM
I don't doubt it...

10:07 PM
@Green I had a long cross country practice (7.74 miles to start off the week, done faster than usual) followed by a college interview two hours a way . . . plus traffic.
I appear to have missed quite a busy day in chat.

It's true. We party when you're gone.

@MonicaCellio Great idea. I'm just reading the meta post.

10:24 PM
@HDE226868, I just hadn't seen you around and was wondering. How did the interview go?

@Green Very well, I think. It was my third college interview, so I'm getting better (in theory).
By the way, I have practice Monday - Saturday each morning, so I'll be inaccessible until ~ 16:00 UTC.

@HDE226868 Good luck! Are you going to study astrophysics?

@Green Hopefully, in about a year. The school I did the interview for has a great astrophysics program, so here's hoping I get in. . .

@HDE226868 You're applying for undergraduate admission? Or higher level?

@Samuel Undergraduate.

10:35 PM
Ahh, a nice long road ahead.

@Samuel I'm looking forward to it.

Especially for physics. You'll want to do a graduate degree to get a good job.

@Samuel I'm planning to go to grad school, assuming things go well.

I would recommend a graduate in any case (the only exception is computer science).

p'shaw, there are no good jobs in physics :-P

10:37 PM
Why not computer science?
@DavidZ Ah, you're the expert here.

The extra time for a degree is not as useful for the vast majority of jobs compared to the experience gained.
That is, two years for a MS is less useful than two years experience.
For everything else though, it's an educational arms race.

Well actually I was mostly kidding. There are good jobs in physics, just not very many of them. Most people who start out studying physics wind up doing something else for work, and given that, you shouldn't take for granted that an advanced degree will be beneficial.
There are a lot of things you can do with a physics or astrophysics PhD, but it does take a lot of time out of your working life to get it.

But what kind of work can you do in physic with just a BS?

10:52 PM
@DavidZ Anything interesting in the first couple years?

@Green You went for the far inner edge of the Solar System (nice idea!). I went for the opposite.

@Samuel you mean, jobs you can do with just a bachelor's degree in physics? There are a lot of consulting companies, financial companies, and other analytical-type companies that look for people with physics BS degrees
(or BA or AB or any of those letter combinations they use)
Having a physics degree suggests that you're adaptable to many different kinds of technical tasks

@DavidZ That doesn't sound particular to a physics BS. I can do the same, and probably many more, with an electrical engineering degree. No?

11:08 PM
A mathematics degree would seem to be equally helpful.

PyRulezOn How shall we celebrate our birthday?, I was reading this idea for us post our stories. I was wondering how this would when it hit me! Q: Can stars exist that are not powered by nuclear fusion?

HDE 226868Stars generate their energy by fusing lighter elements into heavier elements. The most common reaction in Sun-like stars is converting hydrogen to helium via the proton-proton chain, but heavier elements can be synthesized. Before nuclear fusion was proposed as the source of energy for stars, th...

And yes, I'm working on an idea, too.

@Samuel yeah, probably. I don't think there's a whole lot that a physics bachelor's degree specifically qualifies you for, that other bachelor's degrees wouldn't.
