@HDE226868 It could be interesting to thinker on this. We also have a community promotion ad but I was not able to participate on the design. Apparently, I'm the only one who down-voted it.

worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/14273/… <-- so, this has me thinking of "how many things can I run off of waste heat w/ an absorption cycle?"
because people think a mansion must draw multitudes of kilowatts of electrical power...
but if you have high-temperature waste heat at your disposal, you can use it to power either a NH3/water or water/LiBr absorption cycle, and cool that way, as well as being able to build heat pumps off of it to concentrate heat
@BESW?

@ArtOfCode Basically you need to somehow generate the list of empty dates and then left join/union/whatever that into your data
i.e. SQL to generate day 1, 0; day 2, 0; day 3, 0 - then your select joins onto that and takes the other value if it exists, if not then the 0
using an outer join

@TimB still no luck. My SQL isn't that good, I'm having a go but no results yet. Feel free to try yourself

Don't really have time at the moment
maybe in a few weeks if it's still not done :)

Fair. I'll keep trying but if anyone wants to see if they can do it then feel free.

Anyone know of a decent beginner tutorial (that's free) for sql?
Turns out I created the flora tag...

2:06 PM
I learnt sql a long time ago, so can't help you there :p
just start from tables, rows, columns & the select statement and then work out from there

@TimB I mean really really beginner...assuming I know virtually nothing is best. lol

yep

When I first learned sql I read through the definitions at:
http://www.w3schools.com/sql/sql_intro.asp

@Vulcronos Thanks Ill take a look.

@james you have programming experience?
because SQL has bits that are similar to programming, but for the most part you have to think very differently
it's not a new type of programming language
although you can program in it

@TimB no, never been a programmer. I was a logistics officer in the air force and then I ended up sort of accidentally in IT...conceptually I understand a lot because I have to deal with it everyday, but I have no practical use/practice my role is mostly governance and management.

ok
that's actually not a bad background for picking up SQL
if you were coming in from programming you'd have some useful skills but also a bunch of stuff to unlearn
a lot of programmers write terrible SQL because they are still thinking in the wrong way

@TimB ...yeah I have seen the repercussions of that problem lol

The specter of cursors everywhere instead of just writing a single sql statement

@Vulcronos, I found w3schools references to be pretty good, but there are lots of flavors of SQL
PS, i think i like the new user dashboard

Yes there are, but w3 schools is the standard and good general introduction
Most of the concepts there will be replicated in various languages. Only syntax will differ slightly

The most basic SQL is SELECT FieldName, OtherFieldName FROM TableName WHERE something = something
So in terms of SEDE, you can do
SELECT Id, Body FROM Posts WHERE PostTypeId = 1
to get the ID and body text of every question (post type 1)
It's very verbose and at the simple end, very easy to read.

It is

@James another good way to learn is to read other people's SQL and try to work out what it does
The low-quality posts query is quite a good one to do that on

@ArtOfCode I will have to do that.
Good thinking

Why are we suddenly discussing SQL?

@MikeL. I asked...lol

8:50 PM
@James I suppose, but I gathered that someone is doing queries into the DB. Is this an ordinary occurrence?

Q: what tag is needed? something *about* planets unlike earth

JDługoszThe Methane-world tech questions left me wondering what tag it ought to have. planets is about the planet itself, but what about a tag for alien (unearthly) conditions? Is an existing tag suitable, or should I create a new one? If the latter, what's a name that would be meaningful?

@MikeL. My fault, I had spare time and I decided to find things out about the site...
A day later we have 2 meta posts, 12 queries, SQL discussions in chat, and I still have too much free time.

@ArtOfCode Do all mods get DB access?

@MikeL. I'm not a mod, and it's SEDE - data.stackexchange.com

cool

8:57 PM
Nerdtastic.

^^^

I'd love to play around with that if I wasn't writing a paper

@MikeL. oh nice. What about?

9:24 PM
@ArtOfCode The usual, graphics stuff.
We're submitting it to a conference that has a deadline June 2nd, but since I'm leaving for the US on May 19th, I'm officially going into crunch mode come Monday.
A friend of mine publishes on SoundCloud and has managed to get some stats on views on his songs. There were some interesting trends he noticed that it would be cool to verify on other artists' work.
So it's kinda awesome that you can just do things like that here on SE
