12:00 AM
@spicklesandwich So you roll dice to get these values?

As for Civilization:

- Era and Power Source (Like, cultural development era times magic or tech level. Pretty specific to my game.) // Fade and Chaos (Plot variables. Meh.)
Aye.
Or can just choose, whatever.

@spicklesandwich Sounds pretty cool, and useful, too. The one catch is that some of these variables are related to one another. For example, ecology is related to climate, and in pretty complex ways.

I also like to do it for random landscape speed-paining.
Right, so I have to weight them and make adjustments, or make some kind of justification. Can come up with some cool results.

@spicklesandwich Is there a specific problem you're having with it?

Most of the civilization variables, I have to come up with sublists, so it gives me a better idea of how it fits in. I'll break those down individually into questions. For now Ijust want to see if anyone sees any reality-breakers or the like.

12:06 AM
@spicklesandwich As HDE pointed out, if you're trying to make this into a system that anyone can use to generate an encounter, it needs to not rely on that person just trying to figure something out if there is a conflict. There either needs to be a consistent priority or no overlap.

Civ variables that matter:

- Economy (wealth? devpmt? Sources?) // Population (humans or domesticated animals and the like)
- Development (access and quality of basic needs - Shortage-/-Excess; I have a list of sub-var's here.) // Structure (Type and 'decay' of government? I guess? Goes from Dystopian-/-Eutopian.)
- History (Archaic-/-Frontier; basically how old, how many 'periods') // Culture (level of tradition and expression - I have a few sub-variables here)
- Ethics (Like, level of? From depraved to too strict. Solidarity. Equality. Etc.) // Alignment (Isolated-/-Open borders; and/or
Hm. True. Would you suggest I go about that? Like, weighting them?
As far as it's been, it's only been necessary to do enough to generate an idea.

@spicklesandwich I'd do priority from the top down. Like pick a climate, then within that climate, several ecologies are chosen from.

As far as ecology and climate goes, I'm mostly using those terms to mean 'amount or complexity of life' and 'relative temperature and sometimes moisture'. So there's not much overlap there methinks.
So as you stated, the /type/ of ecology would differ based on where it was.
But that also depends on water sources, altitude, most any other factor.

@spicklesandwich Ok, well, I'd use that structure at least. The mutually exclusive items on the outside, then down to dependent items.

Do you still see there being overlap then?

12:16 AM
@spicklesandwich The important thing is that you don't end up assigning totally incompatible things.

Would it work to list them in order of dependence, and then rate them /according to that environment/? So a high ecology for a frozen tundra at high altitudes would have really high ecology, but only for that terrain.
And maybe might not be compatable with much animal life, but lots of shrubs and such.

Some sort of weighting system like that could work well.

So I'd have to weight the dependents on the other variables in general terms, so it'd be clear that high altitudes mean low life, etc.

@spicklesandwich Yeah, you're going to have to simplify a lot of it to get it to work together like that. You'll have to balance how much structure you're providing and how much detail the user has to come up with.

Hm... I'd probably say it's better, at least for this game, to specify it as an idea-generation tool; not a completely prescriptive one. And then explain how each variable, in basic terms at least, will effect the environment. Incompatibilities might have to be a special modify-or-justify weighting 'clause' in there, too. But I think that would work pretty well.
If It were to be put in a video game... well, then the open-ended result would have to be completely defined, and I can see that being more important.

12:28 AM
1
Q: with $2million what kind of survival kit would you bring to a prehistoric earth like medieval world with dragons, dinosaurs and uneducated populace?

mico villenawhat items would you bring with you to another world with the budget of 2million dollars. You were given the information that they are not technologically advance and they have magic. On top of it you deducted upon questioning that it is a medieval-like age as well! You are asked to save the ot...

this clear enough?

Yeah, procedural generation style.
@micovillena Nope. The list of possible problems one might face are seemingly examples of randomness. I might add "In-laws will visit and might demand to stay the night"

damn... i thought that was it

@micovillena It also doesn't clearly state how you will choose the best answer.

Any feedback on the Civilization variables? For most of those, I'm going to have to break them down and do some research individually for more specifics.
I'm working on the Structure right now. I'd like a variable or two to define what KIND of government, if I want, instead of just how decayed/integral it is.
There are so many ways to define governments that it's hard to tell what's a good way to 'build' one.

12:48 AM
@spicklesandwich How important is the type of government to the encounters?

Not hugely. At least, not until I build in a more robust social encounter engine.
But for flavor's sake, I think it'd be nice to not have all-feudal medieval or all-democratic modern societies.

1:32 AM
need help...

do we have portable nuclear reactors that can fit in 50x50 sq meters? Under the cost of 2million dollars

5 hours later…
6:41 AM
@HDE226868 That's providing it lets you explain your theory. The "Excuse me, Sir" being answered by a projected jet of flames... with a bad breath odor, isn't really easy
@micovillena Yes. No. Nuclear Submarines. Or if you don't want much control: nuclear bombs.
@spicklesandwich I did not go through the details, but I'd suggest to approach your generation as a tree and not as a combination of independent pools. Like: period (medieval, modern, sci-fi), climate, etc. That way you can exclude immediately options that do not fit together.
If you haven't already, have a look at one of our world creation series: meta.worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/2594/…
it might give you some idea on how to organise the nodes of your tree

1 hour later…
8:23 AM
@micovillena Reactors, yes. Power plants, no.

@MikeL. but even then, not below 2 millions $

@bilbo_pingouin Well, that depends. There's nothing terribly expensive about making it, most of the cost is just quintuple-checking everything to make IAEE and Greenpeace happy.
But yeah, maybe $2M is not enough.
For a modern one, that is.

I'm pretty sure getting enriched U/Pu does not come out pretty cheap neither

@bilbo_pingouin Uranium. No, but then again, you don't need that much of it.

It really depends... but again, I doubt you could find it under $2M...

8:29 AM
Chicago-1 cost 2.7 M in 1942
For everything.

and correct it for inflation?

But that's probably not the kind of reactor you want to be running on long-term basis.
@bilbo_pingouin And for the drop in the price of materials, more significantly.

@MikeL. doubt it. Dollars are less valuable than they were back then, and I'm not sure the price of metals has lowered that much...

@bilbo_pingouin Well, there is now an entire industry dedicated to mass-producing higher-grade fuel than they had at the time.
We could go check the market prices on graphite, metallic uranium and uranium oxide. But then again, I don't feel like making NSA watchlist.

you probably already did. Remember, this is public ;)
by staying on the less sensible data... Chicago-1 was based on 360 tons of graphite, which makes about 400,000$
hm...
but Uranium Oxyde, is, according to one website, $60 per pound
(I hate imperial units)
so for 50 US Short Tons used in CP-1, we get $6M
so without considering the rest, here you go

8:44 AM
It seems counterintuitive that the same material would have gotten more expensive.

there is much more demand
no-one except some labs wanted it back then
and the purity probably increased considerably

@bilbo_pingouin So it's probably not a good idea to use the same ratio. But anyhow, you're right that you won't get a useful one under $2 million.
You might get a castle for that price, though.

Maybe some WWI tank... or even WWII. That might be useful against the dragon

@bilbo_pingouin WWII tanks are not terribly resistant to immolation.

no, but they might overpower the dragon...

8:55 AM
If it's dragon-slaying you're after, maybe a heat-seeking missile?

either way, a 50x50 m$^2$ castle won't hold that much neither

@bilbo_pingouin They'd have to be really lucky to do that.
@bilbo_pingouin It's non-flammable at least.

missile is good, but again below $2M, you can't get the crème de la crème of them...

@bilbo_pingouin Stingers are 38k a pop
you might get five and have cash left over for a truck

@MikeL. can you be more specific? A lot of aircrafts and missiles are called that way

9:24 AM
how big is that 2.7m reactor? can it be constructed within 3 months to a year? Do i need to worry about waste and maintenance?
Heres the scenario Under 3 months, someone needs to go to another world and was given a budget of 2m-10m USD give or take. One issue is the portable energy producer...
something along 100kw would do alot

how much does a blue diamond cost btw?

@micovillena The issue is not the reactor, but the power plant. The reactor is not terribly big, but the machinery around it is.
In the 100kW range, you're better of with a diesel engine.

i see... the problem with diesel engine is the fuel... i need to feed it constantly

@micovillena, if you want to have 100 kW, below the $2M and in 3 months, nuclear reactors aren't the best solution
at my company we offer some nice products for it :D
@micovillena that will be the same for any source
well maybe wind is your best option there

9:34 AM
@micovillena Is firewood available?

you only specified some area... should it be a cube?

3 months to a year should suffice... lets say i have 100m for it... how long will that take

@bilbo_pingouin I wouldn't call that a good idea

i hope for a container van size one but i guess no...
fire wood is available of course

@bilbo_pingouin Not that you can't build a 100kW wind turbine, but it's going to be awkward, big and constrained to a single spot.

9:35 AM
then again that would not be so productive...

@MikeL. well it does solve the fuel issue

@micovillena A solid-fuel boiler then. It'll have to be bigger than a diesel engine, but you can get the fuel anywhere.
@bilbo_pingouin Partially. The fuel is for free, but the uptime might be an issue.

yeah... steam turbine one?
yes the uptime is the issue... i suppose i'll have the hero buy slaves to keep the engine up
call for a stoker

@micovillena If you can get a steam turbine. It's a little bit more maintenance-intensive than an oldschool triple-expansion steam engine would be. How long does it need to stay operational?

50 years before he can return possibly... if he is still alive at all

9:38 AM
here's a 100kW steam turbine for $100k: alibaba.com/product-detail/…
@micovillena Yeah, that's longer than anything you'd bring is likely to stay operational, unless you go low-tech.

you think 3ple expansion Stirling engine can fit inside a container van?

I'd also go for low-tech steam... he has 3 months to learn how to maintain it, and any fuel or materials would be "easy" to provide for
and he could actually employ dragons... :D

@micovillena This one looks like it might: spilling.info/products/steam-engines.html

make a valyrian steel while at it
think i can do foundry, machine shop and glass mill with 100kw?

@micovillena You can do those without any electricity at all

9:42 AM
electricity makes it easier... specially if i go full blown Bessemer converter

electricity is good... for electric devices

@micovillena I think you might wanna just heat it directly using whatever heatsource you have than lose efficiency through multiple conversion steps

or transport over long distance (in comparison with steam)

Even for the machine shop, I'd just ditch the generator, couple the steam engine with a compressor and drive everything pneumatically.

but you are probably lacking electric devices around the medieval world...

9:45 AM
yeah... it will include fire arms and other items/devices as well so i cant really spend much in space
the electric devices is most likely laptops, UAVs and tablets
i even go as far to make a UAV airbase in my dreams
hahaha

Anything battery-operated will last five years tops.

the good thing about the bag is that time stops inside

you laptops aren't going to last 50 years... and you can't build the industry from nothing, alone in that time

so i guess i can exploit that?

@micovillena Well, you can't be using it then.

9:47 AM
what?

@micovillena well... either you're realistic, and the time stops so you can't run a simulation, develop anything that requires time. And probably the operator gets frozen as well.
or you aren't. And then magic can do it all...

@micovillena You can't use stuff while it's stuffed in a time-bag

yes
thats the idea

you could not stop the time, but stop aging. But then why bother with energy sources, a battery will never run empty

if i want to do something i need to take it out
the solution would be is to bring multiple of the same items
then the issue would be the item organization inside
time stops inside, but once i take it out it resumes to the item... i can prevent batteries from spoiling/degrading if i exploit it that way no?

9:51 AM
you need to clarify your rules... ;-)
if time stops inside, you can't get out

only when you open it the time starts flowing again
you close it back it stops
is that clear enough or i need to clarify it more? sorry for being not clear

well, he needs to leave the door opened then.
but what is the goal? Why do you want to have a bunch of batteries and laptops?
I thought you wanted some survival in the medieval fantasy world?

10:07 AM
so that he can live comfortably or at least he hopes so... he'll just need to move the things outside... its easier then close the door after he gets what he wants so that he can preserve the materials inside the space

so he's planning to spend the next 50 years playing video games? :-D

hopefully not... the story is not yet fully realized but the end game is defeat of high orcs, the dark one and tragic ending.

yes so I'm not sure laptops and batteries are the best devices to bring...
well, except maybe if you plan to act as a tactician and want to run some simulations (look erfworld up)

what do you suggest then?
we can take out items from the "room" without disturbing the time flow for other items inside "the room"
thats wrong... time flow stops when we close the room
thats what i mean
and we can take out items from the room
so i thought multiple laptops would be great since if 1 breaks i can take out another one, factory fresh since the time stops inside the room

10:29 AM
no the time flow and laptops things are consistent... I am just wondering what does he need laptops for?
hence my question about playing video games
note, that he has no internet, so no Facebook...
or Facebook alone which is kind of sad

entertainment and access to the thumb drives that has the data/information for all sorts of knowledge
he's preserving space a s much as possible

11:30 AM
@micovillena, I have seen that you ask a few questions related to the original point. Please note, that "what should my character do" are more related to plot or storytelling than worldbuilding per se. There are some overlap, and there are some cases where it is accepted, but inherently it is close to being off-topic...
so you should keep that in mind when asking derived questions

@SerbanTanasa That's an interesting list of questions.

yeah, i was looking at posts by the number of views
so i figured it'd be interesting to see which high-view posts also got high scores

@SerbanTanasa I love that query
but I wish it showed User Links...

Also, is it just me, or is it not properly counting LastNDays?
CreationDate > DATEADD(day,DATEDIFF(day,##LastNDays##,GETDATE()),0)
I'd think it should be DATEDIFF(day, CreationDate, GETDATE()) < ##LastNDays##

@DaaaahWhoosh easy fix to add the userid:
@DaaaahWhoosh, both work, was just lazy optimizing it

@SerbanTanasa, if you look at the plots I made some time ago: meta.worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/2552/… you'll see that the vote = f(view) isn't linear. So a ratio does not have the same value depending on the number of votes. It might be interesting to think about it for your comparison.
