@MichaelDunfield seconded
@KitFox Oh, I thought it ended after the first page. Derp.
I thought a story with a young, not-so-wise wizard would be something new.
I know I would read it
Really? A story about an escaped demon?
19:02
Yup!
It's kind of ... trite, innit?
Trope, not cliche...yet. So it depends on what you do with it.
@KitFox An escaped demon who was summoned for sex.
Well, it's NaNo. The first novel was crap anyway.
considers
What happens at the end?
The demon, having its own agenda, gets Rachel to agree to aid him in some infernal endeavor in exchange for leaving the material plane.
Maybe she visits Hell, or Gehenna, or whatever.
19:06
In the unfinished erotic short story, a young woman makes a deal with a demon.
They could be linked. I'd have to think about it.
Hmm, that meshes.
Something more interesting than the old 'your soul for riches' would be indicated.
Problem is, there is a ton of demon mythology and I don't follow it. I'm sure I'd piss off regulars.
@Metamaterialgirl Not so exciting. The girl says "I would possess her heart." The twist is in how the demon fulfills that, sneaky demons, you know.
And once again the demon is free.
Here is the beginning. You might have already read it?
I think I had, way back when you shared your blog link. The two stories...*could* mesh, but don't necessarily have to. The tone of the stories is rather different.
19:13
Yes.
@Metamaterialgirl Your soul for sex?
One is erotica, the other is making fun of stupid girls.
Eh, way too expensive.
@KitFox Why not both? It can be like Spring Breakers: the Novel
ha ha ha ha
19:14
Well, Rachel is cocky, but she doesn't have to be stupid...unless I'm mistaking which is which?
Or maybe she grows out of stupidity in the course of the story?
She is cocky and young.
I hadn't decided what would happen to her.
Right, neither of which are unpardonable offenses.
@KitFox Whatever it is, make it gratuitous.
Being young is an offense?
Although I think the demon ought to appear sympathetic and then be sadistic.
We-ell...maybe the first twist is that she thought she was summoning an incubus (since she wanted great sex), but it turns out this demon is something else...
19:16
I want the reader to want him to succeed and then be horrified that they were on his side.
Approves
@Michael, some of the traits that tend to come with youth can be offensive, to the old at least. :P
Ya whippersnapper.
Hmm. Perhaps there is something completely else happening there.
That's one good way to trick the reader into sympathizing.
I took the liberty of interpreting safe word a little differently
I don't know if I'm up to the task of writing an erotic novel though.
And somehow the plot seems like it ought to be.
19:18
@KitFox Only one way to find out though.
You're such a horny toad.
@KitFox I don't see why you should contrain yourself like that.
Well, there's a difference between an erotic novel, and a novel with some erotic bits in it.
If you don't think you can do it properly, make it something else!
19:20
Done. As its my only work its unfortunately my best work. But I hope you aren't expecting much! :P
Yep, it's not like you have to constrain yourself to follow some concept of a novel type. Maybe it ends up being surreal body horror with philosophical discourse and bizarro sex scenes that morph into LSD hallucinations or something.
@Metamaterialgirl Please do not rewrite 50 shades of grey with added tentacles
@RhysW, you just made me hoot with laughter.
@RhysW Are you going to post it?
@KitFox Certainly. I'm ashamed but I won't get better without breaking that habit. What is it they say? The first a million words are the worst.
@Metamaterialgirl bows as is always my goal!
19:22
Well, if you want crap, I can post some stuff I wrote a couple of years ago. It's really awful.
Hehe, I haven't read it myself, I just wrote. I hope it flows
I wrote a short story that I probably linked in here at one point
for school
it was pretty bad
But it was fun
I can't remember it. Remind me.
Taste improves faster than skill, always. But we're all here because we love the process, to some degree, don't we?
19:24
@KitFox It was sci fi.
I forget what it was about
also the formatting is pretty terrible
Oh yeah! I remember that. Using your brain to control things will eventually kill you.
Sounds about right
@KitFox This is why i outright refuse to use my brain
@RhysW vivid premise - the POV shifting is a little confusing.
I remember this being better than it is
Hah
19:27
@RhysW Not bad for ten minutes. You produced a lot of volume and you had a solid concept.
@Metamaterialgirl Much appreciated, I seem to have a habit of POV shifting far too much. Should either get better at it or break that habit!
@KitFox In retrospect it would have made more sense for the last thought to have been that name, but i realised hastily that I sort of deviated from the Safe Word topic a bit
It's a flaw I've been called on too, so it looks familiar. Sometimes it helps to have a definitive page/section break, to alert the reader of the change. The authors that seem to get it down really well usually can indicate the voice of the new character very clearly in the first sentence, so there's no confusion as to who's doing the observing in the new section.
Nah, better he never remembered and that was what drove him insane.
@Metamaterialgirl You can smooth the transition by talking about the new person for a little bit before sliding into that viewpoint.
The obvious solution is to make everything you write terrible so no parts stick out as particularly bad.
@Metamaterialgirl Oh it was all the same character
19:30
@MichaelDunfield True. That helps a lot.
Poor reading skill on my part then, sorry.
Not poorly read, poorly written if thats the case! heh
What about you guys? I haven't seen yours, would like to
I didn't do this one, sorry.
If I did it would be really dirty anyway
@Metamaterialgirl It's four!
Or maybe it's three.
19:36
It's a pitifully tiny contribution.
Compared to you guys who actually created a coherent story in the same amount of time. :P
@Metamaterialgirl I like yours!
@Metamaterialgirl Confession time, i took 11 minutes
Thanks @Michael :)
What kind of weirdo glues dictionary pages to themselves, though. =P
Oh, well, 11 minutes, that's just ridiculous.
19:37
@MichaelDunfield someone who needs to have someone behind them read off big words? :P
A fetishist of some kind?
@Metamaterialgirl woah woah what the hell did I just click into
@Shiester A box? Lets think outside of it!
@RhysW id prefer to stay inside the confines of my safety cube, thank you very much.
@Shiester The grungy, sordid depths of a bunch of depraved psyches, that's what.
19:38
@Metamaterialgirl + me
:D
They fled!
I feel...slightly guilty now.
2 hours ago, by KitFox
Here's my not clever today contribution.
Victory!
@Metamaterialgirl Don't. User was cruising chat rooms.
@Metamaterialgirl i think network issues, they left every chat they were in simultaneously
19:40
Well, it wasn't THAT guilty. Though if they were chased off every single chat by our contribution, I'm now impressed with us.
But yeah, network sounds plausible.
@KitFox Do all of your stories involve keys? :P
I don't think so.
What other story has keys in it?
ah, just coincidence that the ones i picked start like that then! The spider one starts with keys too
Oh right.
in The Bridge, 42 secs ago, by Shiester
So, I'm going on an adventure across the different chat rooms here and I've come to the conclusion that this place, despite what I thought at first, is really the lesser of all evils.
19:42
Ah, that would be the notorious game room?
hey, i take offense that our topic is deemed evil!
Good...bad...we're the guys with the keys.
Hey I actually get that reference having never seen the film.
...Army of Darkness right?
@MichaelDunfield, allow me to present you with this quality chocolate cookie.
19:44
@Metamaterialgirl low or high quality?
I pride myself on the edibility of my cookies, so...high?
And @Michael, you haven't seen the film? Shame cookie!
@Metamaterialgirl I knowwwww
I've played the iPhone game based on it. That voice clip is used in it.
There's an iPhone game? Huh.
I played the PS2 game of it.
Wait, there's a PS2 game?!
19:46
Now I want cookies and sex.
@Metamaterialgirl Yep. It's not bad.
Is there an app for that?
@KitFox This sounds like a plan.
I have a sex cake...would that be acceptable, @Kitfox?
@RhysW For cookies and sex? I don't know.
@Metamaterialgirl Also Android: play.google.com/store/apps/…
19:47
@Metamaterialgirl Is it sentient?
I get the feeling i've walked into the middle of something very strange
@RhysW, just roll with it. The sex cake is worth it.
/me begins rolling with the sex cake
Damn, now I have to find the link.
@KitFox, I just imagined a cake with the attributes of the cowlike beings in The Restaurant At the End of the Universe.
19:48
What is it with you people and sex.
Is it really that great or what
Life is one big sex joke.
shrugs asking the wrong guy if thats directed at me
Unless it's one big fission joke.
@MichaelDunfield It depends. We can talk about other stuff.
19:49
@KitFox :P
Like. Cake.
Doesn't matter to me.
I like sex as much as the next guy.
Great. Now i want cake.
...Probably.
Obligatory.
19:50
@Michael, it seems pretty random. One of the last chats I was on ended up being all about giant Japanese hornets, so yeah, potluck on topics.
@KitFox Yknow, thats actually an acceptable alternative! thanks
Oh yeah, those hornets. Yak killers.
@Metamaterialgirl Wh... what.
Holy crap, that was freaky.
Aaaaand here we are back at sex.
Oh, nm.
19:51
That's cool with me
With fingernails that shine like justice.
Ha, That was at the exact time that line was said for me
What kind of nail polish would work for that? Some kind of metallic silver? Or is justice more of a vivid primary color?
Cherry red with a slick clear top coat.
Justice is cherry red. That makes sense, especially in the 'I'm seeking Justice! for my fallen comrades' sort of way.
19:54
In that "I want to suck on it until my tongue is the same color" sort of way.
Oops.
You want to suck on Justice?
I did it again.
This feels like an episode of "Writers UnBound"
We have officially discovered the lowest-energy point on the writer's topic graph.
Being the person who usually takes the conversation out of the gutter and into the sewer, it could be much worse
19:56
We could be talking about surgeries.
I used to do those.
Or bullet ants.
i read that as Sugaries
Sugary surgery...insulin pump implants?
No, that would be a remedy.
Cake Extraction
19:57
Leaving a lollipop behind accidentally.
So Kit, did you ever decide on a Sodium Nobelium topic?
I don't know.
I'm still torn.
Even with all our useful and intriguing input that wasn't in any way devolving into sex jokes?
@KitFox How many pieces?
The escaped demon that strikes a deceptive bargain to be banished still sounds like fun to me.
20:00
@RhysW About a dozen.
@Metamaterialgirl You could write it.
Except you have something else you are writing, right?
I could, but I already want to do my autistic psyker story.
@KitFox Challenge yourself to a 12 chapter novel, each chapter revolving around a different theme that you are torn between?
I figured out a way to not-really-cheat, which would be to concentrate on a coherent, linear narrative for 50k words. When that's done, then I can incorporate all the vignette bits I've already done, if they're worth adding.
And like @Rhys says, that could be cool - though it can be hard to do novels based on structure. Takes some good chops.
I still cant decide what to do, i had an idea for one, but dont think i can flesh it out enough to 50k
@Rhys, what's your idea?
20:05
bare with me 2 seconds
begins undressing...oh, uh, right.
Sorry. Had to be done.
You know the rules, only I do the undressing
I'd get undressed but it's a bit chilly
What? No one vouchsafed me these 'rules'!
Ok, so the gist of the story, is this boy who is bullied relentlessly, at home, at school, at work. He has no peace save for the few minutes he can steal here and there in his hidden spot in the forest.

He decides to take his own life. But before he does he decides to attend the 'party' of the year. Not because he is popular, but because he wants one taste of happiness before its all over.

Of course, he begins to enjoy himself, but is soon singled out by the bullies who crash the party and chase him into the basement.
20:15
You should absolutely do that, @Rhys.
Theres more to it, a flip side of the coin. But im not revealing that bit yet ;)
Even if it's not a full novel's worth of material (and I think it could be with enough detail), it's a powerful premise worth exploring. And a flip side would make it even more so.
I guess i can write a fair amount from it, having a little experience in the field helps i guess
@RhysW Sorry to hear that, and yeah, maybe it's powerful because a lot of people including myself can relate. But a topic close to the heart is the easiest for me to write; perhaps it's the same with you.
I have a few twists im throwing in there, a few confrontations with some people too. But its funny how much you can come up with in 10 minutes with 4 cups of tea!
20:20
Caffeine: the wonder drug.
caffeine free tea bags
but not sugar free tea
Sugar: the other wonder drug!
Ye gods, it's after 2 and I haven't glued anything to the floor!
I dont.. even..what?
Home improvement project. I swear.
Well, it will be if I actually do it.
Pro tip. Sex dungeons dont hold together using glue
20:22
I'm on a concrete slab anyway, no luck there.
That doesn't sound like a comfortable place to live
um, i think i destroyed everyone else
It's a small house, 1949 construction, a little cold in the winter, but it's mine, and I'm slowly improving it here and there.
Heh. Nah, they just realized it was after 2 also.
'Tis been lovely, as always. @Rhys, @Michael, @Matt, hope to see you around - waves to distant @Kitfox. Take care.
oh, its half 9 where i am :L
Cya Laters!
@Metamaterialgirl Peace. =]
@Metamaterialgirl CU
21:05
@Metamaterialgirl Bye!
Hi @Matt.
hi @Kit :)
I don't know what to write for NaNo.
I'm not sure either, but I'm getting an idea
something about libraries
and time travel
What's stopping you picking one of your ideas?
The difference between something I don't care about and something I do.
I think I could finish one but not the other.
Libraries and time travel sounds sexy.
21:11
I liked the horror story from last year.
thanks! I still need to finish editing it
Well, I need to finish editing mine.
I enjoyed your conspiracy, eugenics story
So what do you think I ought to write about...oh.
whichever story feels right
21:13
They none of them feel right.
scowls, feels sorry for self
I think I feel bad because I want to do something easy, but also want to be a good writer, but also want to be a popular writer.
And those things cannot co-exist.
There is the choice between the suicide story, the sequel to last year's story, and the escaped demon story.
And about a hundred other ideas.
the ouput from nano is going to be less than your best, that's inevitable
you've then got 11 months to polish
so pick the one you want to do, but are afraid to get wrong
then you'll have it wrong and can fix it afterwards
Yeah, maybe.
Which would you pick?
Oh, dinnertime.
See you later.
21:25
Back
for a short time anyway
@KitFox probably the suicide one.
time for bed.
Cya matt
