Q: Fantasy writing and Personal Philosophy

Matthew Paul ChapdelaineI've been writing(an re-writing) something for a good number of years. In the development of the story, it kind of felt like I was finding myself. In this, I feel that the fantasy world I've created is having an effect on me philisophically(I know I spelled that wrong). While this might be a good...

So everybody - any thoughts on how this could be possibly turned into a useful question? Or is it discussion-board material?

@NeilFein I think the core of the question might be answerable if rephrased somewhat. Whether or not it's strictly on topic for Writers ... I dunno.
It appears as if the core of the question is, "I created an in-depth fantasy word that I'm so involved in I'm concerned that my mind is starting to blur the lines between fantasy and reality. Am I alone? Can I fix this? Should I fix this? If so, how?
Whether that question is more on topic in Writers, Philosophy or at a therapist's office I will leave in the hands of those more capable than I.
@KitFox [insert sharp, snappy comment that reassures @KitFox that my sensibilities were not offended by the preceding comment] My mind is unable to conceive of a sufficiently witty comment that lets you know that I've listened to enough Louis C.K., Lewis Black, Christopher Titus, et. al. to be okay with properly lampooned child abuse. We're good. :)

@JedOliver - I'm tempted to close, since it's hard to know what's in this guy's head; I really don't think it's something that can be answered, or even should. But I really don't want to shut this guy down.
Gonna give it a while and see what kind of answers it gets (I know, I usually close 'em first). But this may be a case where the answers may help focus the question, and I really want to start giving the community a chance to step in on this one.
But I wonder if this guy really should see a therapist. Anyone that's not me think we should leave a note to this effect? If it's causing him dysfunction, that could be a problem. And I don't want to contribute to it.

There is a legitimate writers problem here. ish. How do you cope when you've created a whole new world and you spend so much time writing the stories of that place that you have a hard time keeping track of the real world? How do you stay involved in your project without being completely enveloped in it?
Also, story about a writer who [in my best Robb Lowe from Parks and Rec voice) is literally unable to distinguish between the fantasy world he created and reality is now officially #5 on the list of novel ideas to flesh out.

5:04 AM
If we treat this as an "occupational hazard," then I suppose it's on topic.
That might be a reasonable treatment,
considering the vast number of never-published crackpot writers running round out there :P
I know I keep reading about them in all the "most flabbergasting query letter/inappropriate attempts to push their ms on my" blog posts...
Though that's rather more correlation than causation...

So do we wanna see what kind of answers it gets?
I'm just worried that answers will be guesswork, and could cause more harm than good.

Point being, what we could do in the answers would be to define warning signs vs. healthy immersion.

OTOH, we do have some mightily perceptive people here.

Not offer a diagnosis, but guidelines to self-diagnose.

I don't think anyone here is qualified to help self-diagnose.
But general stuff like "if you can't function in your life, then get professional help" can't hurt.

5:31 AM
@NeilFein: I think this one sets precedent (deleted, hi-rep only):

6:30 AM
Ok, I'm here
I posted that thing Neil was talking about

6:44 AM
Damn, how hi-rep do you have to be?
It says 404, and I have 802, but it's still not working.

that seems a bit excessive

I answered your question, fellow

really? Thanks, I'll read it now
I'm not seeing gnomes
But from what I've read in this chat, my question might not be relevant to anyone not qualified to handle it
You all make a good point.
But as you have said also, it might be beneficial to see what the community has to say, especially since the question has received a bit of attention.
Ultimately, it may be closed, but there might be more reactions.
@Neil I have been getting professional help, but not an answer to that kind of question. I brought it up last session, and didn't receive any helpful advice...

@JedOliver How very witty of you! Now I feel not only less awkward, but also completely at ease. You have such panache.
@NeilFein I feel like answering this question, but I don't know if I have anything useful to contribute.
@Matthew Are you still about? We could talk about it in chat.
Or maybe this could be the topic for the next Writers chat.

@KitFox hi! I've been so busy!

Hello.

I think I might leave that story alone and re-write my submission completely
And publish an edited version on my blog and make fun of myself

What for?

For writing a 16 year old's fantasy at my age

Come on now, it was just a draft.

3:09 PM
;)
I feel like I got it out of my system and I can work on the real story now

Exactly. Just like a real writer should.

Work has been busy lately

You work?

4:14 PM
:)

I work, and I'm the boss of people

Spiffy.

Is this a good question for over here?

Q: Citing in a paper: one citation for two paragraphs?

Marie. P.I'm not sure if this stackexchange-site also includes scientific writing, but I guess it is the best site to post my question at, so I'll give it a try. I'm writing a short paper on macroeconomics; the professor gave us two tries, I submitted the first try, and now got my feedback. The feedback...

@Neil @Standback ^?

7:38 PM
How do I summon the mods, again?

Just migrate it, @RegDwight, you do not need @NeilFein or @Standback or @justkt for it.

Oh I will. But I'm still interested in figuring out how this summoning works.
I only ever got summoned myself. Never summoned others.

Well, I only know the @name method, @RegDwightB8.

Well yeah. I also could mod-ping them individually.
But I want the summon.

Don't be greedy ;)

7:42 PM
Oh, it only works in the Teachers' Lounge, it would seem.
Another day, another riddle solved.

Well, than do it there :)

Too late. You go sort it out now.

Q: Citing in a paper: one citation for two paragraphs?

Marie. P.I'm writing a short paper on macroeconomics; the professor gave us two tries, I submitted the first try, and now got my feedback. The feedback is: "The first paragraph could also deserve a reference". And these are the two paragraphs this refers to (note the reference [3] in the end):  ...

Cleaned up the layout as requested by the OP and purged all comments before migrating.
Have fun.
Over and out!

awesome. thanks.

@RegDwightB8 - I can't see the revision history anymore, but the question looks good to me.

Yeah she basically didn't know how to make a paragraph on the very next line.
And the first sentence in the question was, I am not sure if this is the right site, yada yada.
Nothing spectacular.

7:56 PM
Cool, I also added the tag and left her a note about style guides.

Well yeah I have no idea about tags on this site except perhaps .

@RegDwightB8 - That tag has been depreciated, and we're slowly retagging to get rid of it. meta.writers.stackexchange.com/questions/495/…

Oh haha. Well then I have no idea about tags on this site, period.

'sall good, no worries.
That's our <strike>headache</strike> problem.

You have no inlining love in this chat?
Lemme try myself.

Q: Is [critique] a meta-tag?

StandbackJeff Atwood has discussed meta tags, which he (via Aaronut at Cooking.SE) defines as follows: Meta-tags [are tags which] do not describe the content of the question. They describe some other aspect of the question, like the author's skill level, or the author's motivation for asking it, or ge...

Ah! Yes I can.

7:59 PM
That only works when the URL is the only thing in the chat message.
Yes, you can indeed bring love to our chat room. :)

Well it looked like it was in yours, did it not.
And you never know what they do to Beta places.
But I'm happy to learn you've got all the toys.

I think that chat is chat, no matter the site.

I would certainly hope so. Which is why I was confused in the first place.
Anyway, I gotta run eat cake. Important matters await!
So over and out once again.

Q: Is there a name for the literary techniquie where the author writes themself into the book?

tombull89In a number of novels by Clive Cussler, the characters are sometimes offered help or assistance by a person who's surname is Cussler, same as the author. I believe this happens in at least Sahara and Dragon, and also Stephen King has done it in his Dark Tower books as well. Is there a name for t...

He's asking for a definition. What EL&U calls single word requests. Does this belong here or in EL&U?
Or is the name of the technique best answered in Writers?

10:19 PM
I edited it to fix a spelling error or 12. And even though I gave an answer I still think this is best handled as a single word request at EL&U, but I will default to the wishes of the mods. @NeilFein @Standback
