@JedOliver - I agree that this'd be best off handled on EL&U, but I'm okay with it being here since it's about a writing technique. A question more about, say, the history of the technique, or perhaps it's benefits and drawbacks would make more sense, but I think this is fine too. @Standback @Justkt - what do you think, leave it here or migrate it?

Yo pipls, wanna have this question?

Q: Are parentheses good (or bad) practice?

T. WebsterI most often find it easier to write many things with parentheses, but I don't know if this is considered good or bad practice. I would almost expect some might criticize and say that parentheses would be indicative of excessive digression and that instead, the sentences would be clearer if restr...

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I hate to speak for the mods but it feels more like a Writers question than an EL&U question. It also feels like it is likely to be closed as not constructive. But we'll give it a whirl.

Well I'm not in a hurry, if you're unsure.
I mean, I myself have closed it as "not constructive", rather than "off-topic".
I'm just not sure if your rules are more relaxed.

The problem for me is that as worded the question is seeking opinion. Properly edited it could be a useful question on style

I mean, it's already closed @ EL&U. Might as well ship it over. Worst that's going to happen is that we'll close it again.

Fair enough.
It's yours.

Thanks. Taking a look at editing it now.

I purged some of the comments (that were literally saying pointless things such as "they are good when they are needed" and "overuse is bad"), but left mine be as I think it still applies.

cool

Yeah I'm selfish like that.
Just kick it out yourself at a later point when the issues have been addressed and it no longer makes sense.
Over and out!

@RegDwightB8 As it is now, I think it's a good question. Yeah, it's seeking opinion, but it's also fairly narrow, and it invites users to say why rather than just asking "should I use parentheses, like ever?"
Thanks for sending it over!
Okay, everyone, I have a question for y'all:

Q: Input on my outline of a fictional short-story with a personal message.

BOSSHey everyone, I am hoping this question isn't too unorthodox for this site. If so, I apologize in advance. I'm writing a short-story for my english final. I'm a junior in high school to give some context. Also, the reason this freedom is being allowed is because we have already taken our AP e...

tl;dr - what's up with it?

I was going through some older questions, removing the critique tag, and came across this. Is this user asking for anything specific in this critique? It seems they're concerned that it's derivative, which would be a fine question to ask, but it could also be seen as somewhat general. Is this specific enough to leave open? With older questions, I'd prefer to err on the side of leaving them open.
No rush on this, of course. It's been here for a year, after all!

@Neil, you are already overruled, so leave it. Community decided that it is a good fit. it has 8 (in words: eight) upvotes. Lauren's answer has 9. Leave it as it is.

Yeah. I'd just leave it at this point

Upvotes on a question do not mean that it's on-topic.
(And even a bad question can get good answers.)

It means it has value for the community.
Who are you that you think you know better than we?

I'll leave a note explaining that it's an old question, and were such a question asked now, we'd ask for more specific criteria.
I am your moderator. Kneel before Zod! :)

@NeilFein [rolls eyes]

I'll kick you little mod ass, just show me your virtual butt ;)

:D
Is there an emoticon for virtual butt?

Hmmm... invent one

Okay, left this comment:
> Note: We'd ask for more specific questions about the work if this question were asked now, as per our critique guidelines. However, the question is nearly a year old, and has been asked and answered, so I'm leaving this here for historical reasons.
Aha! It works!
Markup likes me, at last.
@justkt @standup - What do you guys think?
of that note, I mean. If we hit another one of these older vague critiques that has value, you guys good with leave it as is with a note like this, unless it's a a really vague "make it better, somehow" question?

Finally read it. He is literally asking "What do you guys think of this?".
Could you be slightly more vague about what you want, please?
