A quick softie question for @PolyGeo, what is your user icon?

7 hours later…
19:51
@AndyW - it has two parts - Mars because many others have incorporated Earth into their logos and I did not want to just copy them.
The other is the head minus antennae of an Australian bulldog ant Myrmecia forceps which is from the genus I studied for my Ph.D.
My original idea was to have the globe much smaller and to be carried in the ant's mandibles like it would an egg
But then I thought by making it bigger it started to look like the base of a globe
Overall it represents my original and eventual careers - thanks for being the first to ask a question here!

@PolyGeo Interesting backstory! Did you make it in GIMP/Inkscape or (shudder) MSPaint?
21:14
@blah238 That sounds like a rhetorical question :-) I did it in ArcMap.
21:42
@PolyGeo That is somehow scarier than MSPaint then!
A scanning electron micrograph from my thesis, an image downloaded from NASA, no need for georeferencing, and a simple heads up digitizing job that took about an hour I think.

@PolyGeo A user once asked for a list of offensive symbols/colors. On sites like StackOverflow questions like this are often closed with a reason such as "too broad", while your decision was that it should remain open. Is there a right level of leniency for GIS Stack Exchange to both encourage quality content while welcoming new questions from new users? Could you summarize your attitude towards questions like this one?

Q: Should Shopping List Questions be Off Topic (and Closed) on GIS Stack Exchange?

PolyGeoThis Question is prompted by the List of GIS applications for Android Tablets Question on Main which received its 21st Answer today. Such Shopping List questions are off topic at StackOverflow as per discussion at Why are "shopping list" questions bad? and Jeff Atwood's blog Q&A is Hard, Let’s G...

Above is a Q&A I initiated on Meta to discuss Shopping List questions last December which I thought I would link to here first as background.
When it comes to my current view on Shopping List questions, I look first for whether the asker of such a question has undertaken an amount of prior research which is commensurate with what they are looking for potential answerers to undertake or to have undertaken ... but Shopping List questions are always likely to have a big grey area in their definition so I am clearest in my personal policy at either end

Q: Comparison of open data portal solutions

blah238For many organizations, such as local/county/state governments, providing public access to GIS data is a challenge. Simply knowing what data is available, what it is, who owns and maintains it, and where to get it is probably the most immediate challenge. Therefore a GIS data inventory is a nece...

Above is a Shopping List question that I upvoted and below I will add one that I recently proposed for closure as "too broad".

Q: Get a db of all the addresses of a country I need

GriendersI'd like to know, is there any way to get a free list (database) in csv or something like it of all the addresses (regions, cities, streets, buildings...) for an arbitrary country? UPDATE: What's unclear in my question?

I would not like to see us become Yahoo! Answers (answers.yahoo.com) for GIS but instead to attract quality questions and to have quality Q&As found by visitors to our site.

On Shopping Lists a blog posting that helped shape my thinking was blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/11/qa-is-hard-lets-go-shopping
