Q: How can I stop offering a service?

SometimesBasically, how can a business stop offering a service? Should you give current customers a certain amount of notice? Are there any legal aspects that should be considered? What kind of effect could it have on my company's reputation? Are there any differences for this between free and paid serv...

@MatthewHaugen: Not sure it makes sense to edit the scope/meaning of a question to match an answer after the fact. Are you aware of any existing meta supporting this?
@blunders The original question was way too broad. I edited it to fit the scope that I understood the OP to be asking about, as an alternative to closing it. I didn't mean to step on your answer, if I did.
If you have an alternative edit that you'd like to propose, my ears are definitely open.

@MatthewHaugen Nothing to do with my answer, just think that the you, not the OP changed the meaning, and that change was made to match the existing answer. More to the point, while I'm unable to cite a meta, my understanding is this is not good form, though very possible I'm mistaken, or for that matter, don't completely understand the edit or the OP's intent.
(Going offline; be back within 12-hours, or so. Cheers!)
@blunders The OP failed to respond to a two-week-old comment by Connor requesting more information, but has been seen on SE since, but has not contributed to Startups. I didn't base my edits off of the existing answer. I also didn't change the meaning, I expanded on it. At least that was my intention. Again, I'm definitely open to a more suitable edit.
The original version asked "Basically, how to stop offering a service whether free or paid?" which I fixed the grammar of and made a bit more professional, but nothing serious, and "Do you give current customers certain amount of notice or what would be recommended?" which to me implied a curiosity in the logistics of ending the service, so I expanded on those. Again, the original was just too broad.

@MatthewHaugen Main issue in question is what rights the OP has to manage the intent of the question, given it appears that the OP has had the chance to review the edits in a timely manner, in this case, much like when you edited my question and I was around to notice the edit, I no longer see this instance as an issue.
That said, in my opinion, an OP has the right not to respond to comments, and the community has the right to close the question if it believes the OP question does not meet the site's guidelines.

@eggyal: Any reason you don't post questions too? Realize that you might not have a question yourself, though I am guessing that you are in the position to ask good questions. Thanks for your answer on debt-vs-equity!
@blunders No particular reason—you can be sure that when something occurs to me, I will ask! I just feel, at the moment, there are an awful lot of generic questions (which are still useful, in their own way) but very few specific "I'm running a startup and am stuck on problem X" (which is the type of thing I think SE is particularly great for).

@Mr.Alien: Hey... :-)
@eggyal All the more reason for you to post questions, right?
@blunders hello :)
@Mr.Alien Any progress on your question related to financing your idea? Also, any reason you haven't selected an answer for the question?

Q: I've an idea but I don't have enough capital to start up a company

Mr. AlienThis is a common issue for an individual has a lot of ideas but cannot start a business because he/she lacks sufficient capital backup. Assume that I want to start a decent Web Development company, but now I can't afford to buy assets in the initial stage. If I hire a few employees, I'll need su...

@blunders You're right! As soon as I have one...
20:24
@blunders sorry for the late reply, was playing and will surely select one after I read them :)
@connor: Hey.... :-)
how's it going?
Good, chilly at the caffeine shop working... you?
doing pretty well
@connor Awesome; so, any thoughts on how to increase the quality of questions being posted; ask in part because I've recently posted a questions, some of which I've deleted due to a lack of traction.

I don't have any perfect solutions, sorry. I know we've slowed down a bit the past few days, but were doing alright compared to other sites in beta
it's rare for a site to to hit all of its targets in the 90 day period and we also had an extended private beta period
there's nothing wrong with leaving a question open even if it doesn't get an answer immediately
you may even get the tumbleweed badge
@connor dont worry about the stats, all you need is quality content

That's definitely true and I think we've been doing well in that regard. I think we're still on a good track here, steadily growing and producing usefull content
@connor Yes, I know there's nothing technically wrong with it, just my personal way of managing my queries; for one, I really don't like a low-quality answer being posted, and then having the question just exist forever like that, since I'm able to delete the question after an answer is posted.
@connor I don't care about gamification; unless of course that's how to game the system to get more information.
@Mr.Alien Correct; from Tim Post's public beta announcement "Put simply, unless we see the site overrun with extremely poor quality questions and spam, and no one doing anything about it, you've got a site."
that's fair. You can still flag your question for deletion, but if the question and answer look fine it's unlikely to be accepted
if you do still want an answer to an old question, bounties can be effective
@connor Nan, I have a billion questions, no single question is that important to me.
20:57
well keep asking them, I've learned quite a bit from your questions and the answers they generate
@connor Thanks, that's good, wish more people would ask questions.
They'll come. Whenever I have one, I ask it. I just can't make up questions on the spot.
@connor (Personally, I hunt for good questions, but that's me... :-)
also, if you know anyone who would interested in a site like this, be sure to invite them
@connor I used to market SE sites, but it too hard to get solid data from them on my marketing campaigns, so I stopped doing it.
