Batman took levels in some insane variant of Paladin. When a Paladin takes levels in anything other than Paladin, you cannot continue levelling up as a Paladin ever again, in some editions. Batman was in way, way too deep before he noticed his variant of Paladin was making him insane, but at that point he didn't want to forgo ever being able to put more levels into his main class ever again. (That'd be suboptimal!)
So, Batman continues being Batman, and becoming even more insane as Batman, and never puts a single level into something that doesn't make him more insane.
@JoshuaAslanSmith ah yes... I have read select few outliers. I've read the one that cemented the Joker's origin story, one exploring a future where Superman effectively becomes a US military pawn (and gets into a fist-fight with Batman who's in a mechanised suit), and I can't remember the others because it was so long ago. At least one probably explored the idea of Batman just being entirely disconnected and possibly psychotic.
@JoshuaAslanSmith naw, i haven't read any critics - i just read the comics and discuss them with one of my friends sometimes. I really did just read a comic by an author who decided to explore that possibility of batman's story.
Yeah I just mean psychotic as in mentally unglued from reality.
Before I get into the details I just want to mention that I'm working in a remote area right now and don't have access to the 5ed starter kit, just the downloadable pdfs.
I'm looking for advice on how to upgrade adventures/encounters from older versions of D&D to 5ed. This looks like it would b...
I've just read the D&D 5e basic rules, and I'm not sure I'm up to speed regarding casting spells while clad in armor. The only mention I can find about this (page 79):
Because of the mental focus and precise gestures required for
spellcasting, you must be proficient with the armor you are w...
Whirlwind Attack:
You can use your action to make a melee attack against any number of creatures within 5 feet of you, with a separate attack roll for each target.
Am I right that Whirlwind Attack can not be used with Extra Attack, because you do not use the Attack action? Generally, can ...
I noticed combat was quick - I've read complaints that combat in D&D (especially 4e) can sometimes take hours to resolve, but that wasn't an issue last night.
Yes indeed. There are also a few Redbrands hanging out in their favorite tavern in town whom we didn't visit (unless they were the four we defeated in the showdown outside the temple).
I was thinking, now that glass-staff has been captured & will no doubt be serving time...perhaps he could be convinced to continue working on his potions while in prison in exchange for a few gp allowance. Although that may be a dangerous proposition.
@waxeagle @robertf I think as a GM in a general campaign setting Id have to make calls on whether or not a monster would stumble upon the party short resting in a dungeon
basically scope out a behaviour pattern for all the monsters and where they are to start and then roll to see how they move
A gelatinous cube would just be sliding along all day and all night
but sentient enemies would probably follow a set patrol schedule
@waxeagle apparently the eldritch knight gets access to a cantrip that grants advantage
I liked the small touches in the Redbrand hideout: the barrels of food & the source of fresh water (although we didn't encounter any privies - where were they going to the bathroom?). Their hideout seemed very plausible & functional. Some older dungeons I played as a kid were pretty silly in hindsight, such as the Lost City Basic D&D module, where monsters inhabited separate rooms on each level of the pyramid w/out interacting with each other. Who knows what they were eating and drinking?
A friend of mine picked up the starter kit for 5E. After some discussion, we have 4 players and a DM ready to start a campaign. Three of us have little or no experience, while the other two have a few games under their belts but still think of themselves as novices.
Between the group members, we...
@JoshuaAslanSmith burns an action to get it though. So you'd have to burn your Action surge to get it on the same turn (and it's concentration, so have fun with that :))
@JoshuaAslanSmith that's a serious challenge actually. Probably OT depending on what the answers are...( things like get a baby sitter or put them to bed/hand them iPads/books before you play are more parenting.se decision than rpg.se stuff)
One of the comps I want to do is between a Fighter 10/wiz 10 and an EK. I'm curious how two sets of class features to 10 does vs 20 levels of class features
@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah, exactly, opportunity attacks are rare, so having other things to spend your reaction on isn't a big deal. It's like immediates in 4e (as long as you weren't a classic defender)
@JoshuaAslanSmith the proper comp is probably evocation since EK is aimed there. I might see what abjuration looks like though because that's the EK's other school
abjuration is freaking cool for a melee character though
10 levels of fighter gives you 3 archetype features, action surge, second wind, and one use of indomitable, plus 2 attacks
10th level wiz gets up to 5th level spells. Obviously you take Fighter as your initial class since you don't care about skills probably (or you'll patch them with a feat later)
Ok, I'm going to build these later. Probably put them in PDFs on my google drive and tweet them at Rob Donoghue (Because he was wondering in his blog 'bout that)
hmmm hunter's mark is much better than I originally thought
I was like meh, concentration, duration 1 hour, only 1d6 extra damage, though the adv on perception or survival checks to track the creature is cool
but then I read about it being transferable to another creature if the spell is still up, and I was like, hot dog
some of those paladin oath of vengeance spells just feel off
bane seems like, Ill spend my turn helping the wizard/sorc/warlock
protection from energy seems of very limited use
scrying is cool but again not terribly useful
and while I like banishment there is a 5th level spell called banishing smite which is sooo much more paladin
@waxeagle Im probably always going to roll with the custom background rules as a GM. Pick a feature (or make one of similar power and out of combat utility), pick 2 skills, pick 2 or mix and match tool prof and langugage, and then crib a background item pack or just use your class gold
@JoshuaAslanSmith - So we need to discuss a gameplan for the next 5e session with waxeagle. Do we want to sweep thru the easy side adventures (like the banshee lair) to gather magic items & loot, then take on Cragmoor Castle at the end? Bet we could even hire a few folks in the town (such as the retired adventurer + the priestess) to beef up our party.
The fellow Glass-staff was corresponding with, Black Spider, is the chief bad guy at Cragmoor, is that right?
Sounds good. If the party donned our confiscated Redbrand cloaks (and my wiz even disguised himself in Glass-staff's robes) wonder if we could walk right into Cragmaw unopposed, posing as a delegation from the Redbrand Hideout?
What is the highest Armor Class achievable for a Sorcerer with the Sorcerous Origin of Dragon Bloodline?
Player's Handbook Chapter 6 variant rules included. (Multiclassing, Feats, etc.)
