Q: Pros & Cons: Sorcerer & Cleric cross-class

XerosigmaI'm toying with the idea of cross-classing a Sorcerer with one level in Cleric. At 2nd level, 1st level Cleric & 1st level Sorcerer, what would be the pros and cons? At 20th level, 1st level Cleric & 19th level Sorcerer, what would be the pros and cons?

12:50 AM
half elf rogue/cleric:knowledge
8 skills, so many double prof bonuses

1:24 AM
There's totally an Oregon Trail minigame in HotDQ

2 hours later…
2:57 AM
So a quick study reveals that basically...there are no magic items in tier 1 of the HotDQ adventure..Tier two of said adventure is filled to the brim with them (specially Episodes 6,7 and 8)
This is in marked contrast to the starter adventure where there are numerous

Interesting.

There is a single magic item possible in tier 1 (there is also an opportunity to kill an NPC who has some magic scrolls, but it's not necessarily even probable you'll fight him that early).
Tier two has over a dozen possible magic items. And most of them are actually pretty tough to get.
(plus potions and scrolls)

1 hour later…
4:12 AM
@waxeagle That is exciting
man just ran the redguard ruffian hideout, boy did one player think the signet ring had some kind of significance
specifically in conjunction with a detail I made up.
about the fountain
sad that I ran it before I played it so Im going to definitely take a back seat tomorrow/tonight as a player

4:53 AM
> make sure you took cleric spells that scale (so you can cast them in your higher level spell slots).
@waxeagle Can MC chars use any spell slots for any spells they know?

5 hours later…
9:55 AM
@Adeptus yes

4 hours later…
1:29 PM
Two new 2015 book announcements from WOTC: Elemental Evil Adventurer's handbook, and Princes of the Apocalypse, which appears to be the first adventure of an Elemental Evil arc
both produced by Sasquatch Studios
interesting to see WOTC farming out a player's book

1 hour later…
2:35 PM
It may just be like the Tyranny of Dragon's Adventurers Handbook, giving guidelines for organized play.

> Not inherently evil, elemental power can be mastered by those with both malevolent and benign intentions. The Elemental Evil Adventurer’s Handbook provides everything that players need to build a character that is tied directly into the Elemental Evil story arc, with skills, abilities, and spells meant to augment their play experience throughout the campaign. Additionally, valuable background and story information provides greater depth and immersion.
I don't think so
looks like maybe some new subclasses, feats, schools and domains possibly

Perhaps it's a bit of both then..... it's tied to the arc like the Tod one is, but it sounds like it will be bigger.... marketable... filled with good stuff.

yep, with a cover price to match
($30)

That's going on my buy list even though the adventures don't.

yeah, I'll likely pick it up...probably pick up the adv path too though

2:58 PM
check that, cover is $40. will likely be 30 or so on Amazon

It appears to be adding races, even
> An accessory that expands the number of options available for character creation for the Elemental Evil story arc, providing expanded backgrounds, class builds, and races meant specifically for this campaign.

Though I can only access the cached content of that release
Main page is giving a 502 error

of enworld?
whoah, Enworld reporting the official release of DungeonScape is F2015... that's late
weird, I've got it
is the direct link to the page

Yeah, that just ends up being the standard 502 bad gateway page for nginx
Oh, it went through the second time
Weird, they might just be having some server issues

might be some internet wide server issues, Cartographer's guild was 502ing
(though that could simply be my web filter's way of saying "go do work" to which I say "compiling")

3:16 PM
@waxeagle - I should be able to play tonight if the game is still on.

k, haven't heard from Gruber yet, I sent him an email to his own domain (couldn't find his gmail right off hand). Haven't seen him around since he moved so I don't know how that's going

If we want to reconvene at a different time next week when Gruber's ready that's fine.

Q: Can a sorc 19 / cleric 1 cast cleric spells at higher sorcerer levels?

DampeS8NInspired by this answer http://rpg.stackexchange.com/a/46442/3799 Sorc 19/Cleric 1 has a bit more issues. You only have the few L1 cleric spells, and lots of Sorcerer spells, make sure you took cleric spells that scale (so you can cast them in your higher level spell slots). It is my unders...

@SurrealAnalysis just a thought, a couple of your answers have been heavier on the quotes than the original content. Just quote the relevant sentence or two and summarize the rest

Okay, can do
I'll edit that one a bit more
@waxeagle Thoughts on the new answer? Would you say that's better organized than before?

3:35 PM
@SurrealAnalysis excellent, yes, that's much better

Q: Does 5e better explain what they mean by "duration, or until you lose your concentration?"

DampeS8NFrom many spells: After 1 hour, or until you lose your concentration This can be ready either as "Whichever comes first" or "Whichever comes last". Presumably it means whichever comes first, but I can't find that stated anywhere explicitly and the ambiguity has come up here and also in my o...

@RobertF and @JoshuaAslanSmith Gruber is unavailable tonight, but has said that he is OK if we want to go on without him. I'll leave it up to you if you want to play without him.
also (@SurrealAnalysis and @Aviose), if I haven't already invited you, we have an open seat (2 tonight) in our 5e starter set game if you're interested in joining

@waxeagle - Sure I'm still in - are we starting ~8:30 again?

@RobertF yeah

4:31 PM
@waxeagle Thanks for the invite, but I'm actually playing in a different game tonight
Are you running through the Mines of Phandelver?

@SurrealAnalysis yep
I'm also planning to run HotDQ later in the year when this game wraps

How do you like it so far? My group was running that, but when the PHB came out we all wanted to make new characters, and someone picked up HotDQ, so we all abandoned it.
We had basically just gotten to the first real town
And started exploring a crumbly manor

@SurrealAnalysis it's a very solid starter adventure. I'm glad I'm running it before jumping into HotDQ...it's learning curve for the GM is shallower than the ToD storyline

Okay, noted, thanks

(not that I necessarily need that but with it being a new system it helps

4:41 PM
What time zone is that 8:30?

@Aviose EDT
1230 UTC

5:12 PM
@waxeagle ken is good to go

ok, we've got 3 tonight unless we round up a 4th/5th

If that is 1230 pm UT that's 5:30 here. I may be able to show up.... any guidelines on characters?

@Aviose we're using the pre-builts from the starter
playing tonight we have a rogue, a cleric and a wizard. You can pick Ranged Fighter or Melee Fighter

6:01 PM
@waxeagle - You'll post the link to Roll20 tonight here in the 5e chat room?

yep

Ah, I would love to join but I’ve got roller derby practice.

@BraddSzonye - You can't multitask roller derby & D&D?

Definitely not.

As far as the pregens, I'd suggest the ranged fighter. I liked the backstory, as well as their abilities, a bit more. +7 to hit on a bow is pretty nice.

6:17 PM
@waxeagle - In light of a recent question in the discussion forum, I think my character will pick up a 10' pole from the outfitter store before we venture into the secret tunnel under the manor...

@RobertF no problem should be plenty of time to swing by and grab one
@SurrealAnalysis that +2 is a strong feature
considering no one else in basic gets an accuracy bump like that
(though I'll note it's completely balanced with GWF and Dueling fighters)

Q: How do I map a 15' cone to a 1" grid?

wax eagleI've been playing 5e for a while now, and mercifully this hasn't come up yet, but it's definitely on it's way. When a caster casts burning hands, how is that properly mapped onto a standard 1" battle mat? The easy response is a 3x3 square, and that's the method I've told myself I'm going to use....

trying to decide if ranged fighter or ranged ranger is stronger

@JoshuaAslanSmith I need to read the classes more thoroughly. Tuesday night was a fast flip through. Spent all of last night in HotDQ

a lot of ranger features trigger as reactions
you basically chooose between features as you level up the hunter archetype

6:31 PM
the biggest issue I see with reaction stuff is that 1/round issue

and it eats your possibility for an opportunity attack (not a big deal for a ranged fighter, but in melee...)

multiattacking via volley is as many targets in a burst 2 (within 10 feet of a point)
but you roll each attack individually
but it eats up your action
soooo yeah I think the ranged fighter's multi attack, while less iconic, definitely has more utility
beast master is of course lame and we shall never speak of it again
hunter seems to let you build features that made up the two previous builds of the ranger in the playtest
the horde breaker and giant slayer features are basically within the hunter archetype

6:46 PM
ok, 3.PF's cone rules tell me I should stick with my gut
and make "cone" mean xbyx square

6:57 PM
Sorry, at work, so more out of channel than in... is it only pregens, or are PHB characters allowdd?
I can certainly take one of the fighters.

@Aviose only the pregens if that's OK
Going to recommend the melee fighter so you don't have to switch up if you want to continue when Gruber returns.

That's cool... I'll have to look him over again.

hes pretty dope aside from them giving him a battleaxe vs a greatsword

(and they had to go and make it an heirloom too....)

7:49 PM
hah
just belt it down and reforge it

8:22 PM
What I am missing with 10 foot poles and 5e?

what about them?
they are terribly needed?
because 5e took passive perception from 4e a ten foot pole is superfluous in many ways

8:43 PM
Is it just me or is the 5E Warlock's Eldritch Master ability utter crap? It requires a long rest to recover, only restores spell slots and not Mystic Arcanum or your daily invocations. I'm better off just taking a short rest for an hour since the 1 minute activation time (10 rounds in combat time IIRC) precludes its use during combat.

It's not great, but I've been pretty underwhelmed with the capstone ability for most classes
I'd say the times it would be good depend on the DM
For example, there are a lot of times you may not be able to take a short rest in a dungeon
But you can take a minute to grab your breath

9:20 PM
Speaking of underwhelmed, I was looking over the D&D5 ranger (one of my favorite classes) and I just couldn’t get excited about it.

Q: New to Tabletops, Starting with 5E. Advice?

DanAfter looking around, I've found some helpful discussions on differences between the versions and introducing players to 5E, but nothing specifically directed at players new to tabletop gaming who are starting in 5E. Hopefully this isn't a duplicate question. A friend of mine recently got the st...

Then again, I’ve probably been unhappy with the rangers in half of the D&D editions

I can imagine
They never seemed to really fit a niche for me
Because most rangers in lore are the gods of everything, essentially
They tend not to have realistic weaknesses / flaws

I like the scout/shock-troop kind of ranger
I think the class went into a bad place for a long time because of Driz’zt
Because some game designers got Driz’zt’s drow powers and ranger powers confused

Can you explain what sort of things you would want from a ranger?

9:30 PM
AD&D1 rangers were a ton of fun, and D&D4 kinda recaptured that
For me, the core of the ranger archetype is scouting, survival, and lore
And a bit of badassery
Basically Special Forces type guys. Like modern military Rangers.
Or Tolkien Rangers

hah
so I think hunter ranger can work
beastmaster is obviously a trap/for the drittz fands
thats a great description of what a ranger should be
and I agree that all 3 versions of the 4e ranger: Ranger, Ranger(hunter) and Ranger(scout) fit it

Hmm, I know that this doesn't necessarily give you the flavor you want entirely, but if you want that sort of character, I'd look into a shadow monk with a outlander background?
Gives the feel of badassery
Skilled in hand to hand / close quarters
Good with a crossbow

pretty balanced article io9.com/…
I think if you build a hunter ranger you can still achieve what you want @BraddSzonye
the core ranger features do sorta become fighter but with some utility spells. I think the terrain mastery stuff is cool but obviously you need to work with the DM to make it fit where you are going to be playing

Yeah, the Hunter seemed the better fit of the two, but it just didn’t thrill me the way the Ninja Monk and the Batman Paladin do.
@SurrealAnalysis Good point about the shadow monk! That’s one I actually want to play too.

9:46 PM
oh man
vengeance pally
can we like just talk about how Im so happy the avenger made it into 5e in some form
my favorite class of all time from 4e

Heh yeah. I’m not actually a big fan of the D&D4 Avenger – they became a fad with my game group and just sorta left me cold. But I was really excited to see them presented as a kind of Paladin. It just makes sense.
And it’s amusing how the core Avenger mechanic is basically advantage.

I liked the idea of the combo of class features and feats allowing an avenger in cloth armor to have really high ac

So it translates really well.

yeah
right, I liked avenger because it met you go full MAD without any penalities
In 4e it was a class that could have only 16 at lvl 1 in its main stat and still work
which is crazy
@BraddSzonye was it people multiclassing avenger or hybriding them?

No, just too many of them.

9:50 PM
it is like the only real divine striker

I think the group was going for an all-divine theme at that time.

@waxeagle This was probably my biggest surprise. I was expecting at least one of the classes to be a reaction master that gains lots of bonus reactions like how fighters get attacks and rogues get hiding.

ah yeah, radiant mafia in the house

And the group did two of them.
Heh, radiant mafia.

oh yeah that could get a bit borin
the avenger ability to inflict radiant vuln, sooo good

9:58 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith Good article, although the characters remind me more of AD&D than D&D3

Im not saying I agree with it totally but in the past io9 has pretty much slammed/not understood 4e

Maybe AD&D2.5

that opening sentence I feel is correct
as much as I love 4e it is a failure in terms of D&D historically and from a business perspective

Yeah, I agree. Great game, bad D&D.

but he rightfully pays it dues by describing it as bold and innovative

10:21 PM
> The pricing model for the app hasn't been released, but the demo build suggested a sort of a la cart model, where you could purchase access to individual classes and races. On one hand, I hate microtransactions like that, but if you're a casual player who just needs basic access to one or two classes, that might make things cheaper in the long run. We'll have to see how it all plays out.
That would be a very interesting way to do things

Wacky, I just read that sentence now.

hopefully there is an "unlock every dadgum thing" button
I'd hope BD&D would be free
more than that and I'm speculating
on that note: dnddungeonscape.com/gen-con-beyond still reading will comment in a minute

The DungeonScape didn’t seem to have much real information.
And it’s hard to search for more because apparently there was a D&D3.5 tool with the same name.

@BraddSzonye that's their latest blogpost I linked to

Ah at least they’re talking timeframe a bit more there.

10:35 PM
no link between book purchase and digital tools access is a bit disappointing (understandable, but disappointing)

Not sure how they would do it without non-reusable codes in the books.

@BraddSzonye I was basically hoping for that
but you'd likely have to shrink wrap books for that to work
(I would have been fine with a subscription model too...)
I know a lot of folks hated that about 4e, but it worked

@waxeagle The biggest desire I had from a digital tool was some way to help organize separate spellbooks. On that front, someone else has already beat them to the punch: 5espellbook.azurewebsites.net

@Dyndrilliac nice. I'm thinking if I have a regular playgroup, GF9's spell cards are going to be a thing

yeah I was hoping my 4e sub would just roll into dungeonscape and legacy tool access

10:51 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I think Mearls had said they'd stay seperate

Guess I need to cancel my DDI subscription then.
I also need to unload a TON of old books.
Because I expect that I will probably never play D&D4 again, and I will certainly never play D&D3 again.

@BraddSzonye most of the 4e stuff is available as PDF now

Yeah I saw that, although it looks like it’s mostly the DM-targeted books available, not so much the player books.
Campaign settings and monster manuals and such.

it seems like stuff they don't want to bother printing any more of....I expect things will continue to get added as things go out of print

11:06 PM
Yeah I figure they will too, just not yet.
I’m trying to decide whether I want to keep a handful of core rulebooks for older editions or just get rid of all of them.
And whether I want to bother with finding new homes with them or just recycle them.
I recently tossed dozens of tech books in the recycle bin, probably paid thousands for them, but there’s just nobody who would want them.

yeah, old tech lit just isn't worth anything :(
I'm definitely hanging onto my 4e essentials books, not sure about my core books
but I'm still playing for a while longer

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, keep the compact essentials books, maybe the core books.
But then I’m also tempted to keep Primal and Psi
and so maybe I should just let it all go :D
The D&D3 books are easy to let go of at least, because I just don’t even want to touch it again.
And I don’t think there’s even anything I’d want to borrow from them, except maybe adventures.

I need to download every single dungeon and dragon issue before I cancel DDI

Oh that’s a good point!
Although I don’t know whether I would ever actually READ them.

just to have if I dont have compendium access
they should just sell the compendium as an app at this point
I would totally pay 20, maybe even 30 bucks for the compendium

11:21 PM
I don't see a reason to play 3 anymore. Everything I Liked about 3 has been done better in 5

@Aviose Exactly!
I need to reserve judgment until I actually get to play it, but so far everything I liked about 1, 2, and 3 are done better in 5.

and I love for, but I think it should have been called D&D tactics instead. It would have been a better label. It wouldn't have attracted so much negative feedback that way.
Four, damned voice to text
I've already run a couple of sessions of 5, & I am going to be organizing my game stores organized play

@Aviose You can edit chat messages for a short time after you post them.

D&D Tactics sounds like a great, non-confrontational way to refer to it
@waxeagle what was start time, 8 or 830?

@JoshuaAslanSmith I kind of almost hope they re-release it in 3-5 years under that label
@JoshuaAslanSmith 830

11:27 PM
cool
yeah there is a gold mine of videogame adaptations for 4e

that'll give me some time to get the kids to bed, do a few dishes and figure out how the eff to RP a Nothic

won't be able to join waxABBA I got paid today and my wife wants to leave the house when we get

@Aviose legit.
that's a new one. I like your v2t :)

I always felt they really dropped the ball on not having both a wargame version and a big bioware style rpg
yeah
dont use that worthless story power
theres no reason
because the nothic is insane
none of us speak undercommon
Im not sure if its even supposed to be working for the reds or if a certain someone has it controlled or what

They tried the wargame version thing a few times. It didn’t work out!

11:38 PM
I felt like 4 was an attempt to take 3rd ed and their chain mail rebuild and combine them.

@BraddSzonye not really...
Im talking like Fire emblem style
4e feels nothing like 3 and its proliferation to me, coming at it from a 4e first mindset

@JoshuaAslanSmith I'm loving the flavor abilities for the Great Old One Warlock. 30' Telepathy is awesome.
Allowed me to be the only person in the party that could communicate with that thing.

@Dyndrilliac did I ask if you were free for a game tonight?

@waxeagle I think I saw a general chat message about it. Alas not, I have to go in a few minutes to get my kid from his friends house and I won't be back online till like 11pm. Unless of course you guys like to play real late...

nah, we'll probably wrap about 12

11:54 PM
when I was originally trying to play rpgs online all the playgroups I could ever find ran on cali time
they all started playing at midnight
for me
and I was in highschool then

Thanks for the offer though! Maybe in the future. I'm on EST by the way just in case.

cool, as are all of us (except our guy who is absent this week, he just moved to PDT)

@BraddSzonye Batman Paladin?

@Adeptus i just realised why batman is so insanely batman

@Adeptus Yes, the Oath of Vengeance is described as a “dark knight” paladin.
