Q: Prior to 1790, before dentist chairs, did dentists put the patient's head between their knees?

barlopI read here https://www.sesamecommunications.com/wp-content/PPNarticles/2007-Q1/chair.html (and similarly in a book of facts from the TV series QI), that in the 1700s, the dentist would have held your head between his knees as he operated. I have read that before dentist chairs, they had stools...

Q: How effective were archers/ slingers / skirmishers in Greek, Roman and Medieval Period?

Hao SunSo it seemed that from the accounts of Thermopelea, Roman military strategy of waiting out an arrow storm, and Knights holding out for hours behind a shield wall during the first crusade it suggests that arrows were not effective weapons until later on, however it seems that archers and skirm...

@T.E.D. On comments: There is now that "New Contributor" badge, which you thought of as very helpful. Previously we had a meta discussion on how to be more welcoming to new users. We shall not answer in comments. Yet I still miss a welcome message on most posts and hesitate to add one if there are already more than 3 comments.
On that HNQ that I complained about here (and on meta for the general case) there were –including my comment– 2 comments requesting clarification for a contradictory with altogether at least 14 upvotes. OP saw some of that presumably, did not edit (and lack of welcome message steering him towards that I can't really blame him), those edits that were made were not helpful in that regard.

Q: What's this coin

M.hh Can anyone plz tell me whats this coin ? I found it with other coin in a bag left by my father after he passed away .. thanks

This is a broad, unclear – in short, still– a bad question with not very good answers. Although a lot of those. What exactly is the problem here? Am I just overreacting? Are most unaware of the meta discussions relevant to what I just pointed out?
