@Amit There's (probably) a way to fix it, but it's a bit fiddly, and would make the code much harder to understand for a tiny improvement.
The problem is that the ymin gets expanded to allow space for the X axis tick marks and labels.
But we can make it look better! Simply pass frame=True to the show() call.
FWIW, there are some plot parameters that can be used to modify plot quality, see doc.sagemath.org/html/en/reference/plotting/sage/plot/…
You might like to take a look at the Help page for the Sagecell Interact widgets. sagecell.sagemath.org/…
02:43
BTW, you can append an 'r' to numbers to tell the Sage preparser to leave them alone. See doc.sagemath.org/html/en/reference/repl/sage/repl/… This is handy when setting default values in input widgets, eg default=10.456r since it prevents those ugly trailing zeroes.
02:56
@Amit Ah, ok. It looks like the plotted curve only extends into the tick mark space, not the space for the axis numbers.
Here's a JavaScript bookmarklet that lets you adjust the SageCell window width. That can be useful on a phone.
javascript:(()=>{let%20w=prompt('Width?','150%');if(w)jQuery('.sagecell').css('width',w);})()

@PM2Ring The frame=True trick does help make it look better, thanks! Incidentally.. do you happen to know why interact would sporadically crash after a few updates and re-renders? I'm going to use this prompt instead: An imaginative illustration of a chatroom in the form of a tree populated with small birds representing users. These birds - a diverse group of robins, sparrows, thrushes, and finches - are perched on branches, chatting to each other. Some are flitting about, delivering messages, while others are listening intently or chirping enthusiastically. The vibrant tree bark and leafy canopy provide a cozy and lively atmosphere. Throughout the scene, symbolic ...
chat bubbles containing 'Chirp' text float around, hinting at the ongoing conversations.
lol
/convert someone just said "the chat is not 100% crickets", what did he mean?
@ShadowWizard It means the chat is not completely silent; there's some activity or conversation happening. (source)
@Pet ^
/convert why "crickets" is a term related to something being silent?
17:55
@ShadowWizard The term "crickets" refers to the sound of crickets chirping, often used to describe a lack of response or silence in a situation where noise is expected. (source)
Now back to the pile!
/imagine Amit on top of Peter on top of Yahav
I'm going to use this prompt instead: A person standing on top of another, who is further standing on top of yet another person. The first person is of Hispanic descent, the second of Middle-Eastern descent, and the third, upon whom the others stand, is of Caucasian descent. They are all standing in a straight line, each one looking up towards the one who is elevated above them.
@Amit In what way does it crash? Do you get an error message? Or does it just become unresponsive, with a ghosted update button? If it's the latter, I think it's just the server kicking you off as a security measure. The Sage server is free, but it doesn't want people to suck up all its power as a free cloud computing resource, eg bitcoin miners. It had big problems due to those guys a few years ago.
oh, definitely an error message, hold on I'll reproduce it in no time
@ShadowWizard Crickets are making a quiet ambient sound, which is hard to notice unless everything else is silent =)
18:01
@PM2Ring weird... just now all I'm getting is the ghosted update button as you said. I noticed it happened before too, but that's not what I was worried about (because I realized it is some kind of capping mechanism)...
maybe I fixed a bug by accident :P I'll keep checking
So if you "hear crickets", that means nothing interesting is happening
/imagine Peter with Ryder Rude and Amit the Turtle with Yahav with a wooden robot with Lucky Couchan and Fne6 the Cat with NOTE Book and Michael the Robotmaster with the Master of 4-colored spheres
I'm going to use this prompt instead: An image showcasing several individuals and their unique possessions: First, Peter, a Caucasian man with Ryder Rude, a beautifully designed wooden robot; Next, Amit, a Middle-Eastern man with a green turtle named Yahav; Then, there's Lucky Couchan, a Black woman holding Fne6, a fluffy white cat with a closed notebook beside her; Lastly, there's Michael, a South Asian man who is known as a robot master, interacting with a fascinating device that controls ...
four differently colored spheres.
@user430580 quiet? Quite the opposite actually. ;)
> According to some sources, crickets can chirp as loudly as 100 decibels, which is about as loud as a snowmobile (a fact you're likely all too aware of if you've ever tried to fall asleep with one trapped in your house). Even the word itself, borrowed from French, imitates the noise the insect makes
@user430580 I don't think this is the source of the term, but not sure. Where you saw/heard this?
@ShadowWizard I don't remember, but that's how I always understood it. But I do not claim that my understanding has origin in truth :P
Another Sagecell security mecanism is that it restricts the sites you can send requests to. Several years ago, you could send requests to any site, but they now use a whitelist, due to the bitcoin miners. Fortunately, Github is on the whitelist. And so is NASA. But for a short while all my Horizons scripts stopped working because NASA wasn't on the whitelist. Fortunately, Andrey is pretty responsive to whitelisting requests. groups.google.com/g/sage-cell
18:10
@user430580 It's tumbleweeds you're thinking about... :P
@Amit Ok
@PM2Ring That explains the notice in a big red rectangle :P
@PM2Ring I did end up finding a bug which actually does crash it now, in the edge case when the numerical part returns only a single point of the initial conditions :)
Maybe that was the actual issue
"This expression was derived from the cinematic metaphor of chirping crickets at night, signally (otherwise) complete silence." (source: rutlandherald.com/opinion/commentary/the-sound-of-silence/…)
@Amit Yeah ;)
"The term likely evolved from your senses indicating a rural setting (which is way less noisy than the city) to any place or stretch of time that's quiet enough that, in theory, only the sound of crickets could be heard. From there, crickets became a term for silence itself." (source: wfre.com/2024/07/22/…)
@Amit maybe? :P
18:13
@user430580 yeh 'cause I think the earlier error I've seen may have been different...
"Crickets is a bit of a paradoxical term, as it means or indicates silence, but literally refers to some pretty noisy creatures." yes you were all correct :P

omg they banned Kenny... (if South park had a stack site)
Kenny is not banned, it's a Super Bot! :D
Ah I see more mod-bots, so perhaps there's some secret private chat for bots.
@Amit only technically, i.e. some staff get a diamond on sites where they need it (e.g. to tag stuff as status-something) but they're not actually moderators, i.e. it's not their role to moderate the site.
It's kind of a simple hack, instead of changing the code.
18:48
oh I see. I guess it makes sense, that way they can at least state that the site is moderated by its own community and not meddled due to company interests
Also note, staff users are not listed in site's moderators tab of the Users page.
@Amit by " moderated by its own community" SE usually means the ordinary high rep users actually, with e.g. edits, reviews, and close votes.
oh yeah , I know more modding privileges depend on rep, but that's still different than being employed by them right
19:25
It is gigaconfusing how they worded it all, like you join the site and see "this site is moderated by YOU! Everyone moderates the site, everyone is a moderator, but not really because there are actual real moderators who also moderate the site, but yes it is also moderated by YOU" it was super awkward to understand it at first, if everyone is supposedly a moderator then nobody is
19:39
The alternative would have been to write "As you gain more reputation, you gain moderation privileges" , which just doesn't sound as good :P
@user430580 it's just like onion, there are many layers of moderation. ;)
and tears all the way
And like onion, the outer layers are bigger, then become smaller and smaller as you get into the core. :D
@Amit true! :D
/convert how do Stack Exchange sites are being moderated? Who are their moderators?
@ShadowWizard Stack Exchange sites are moderated by a combination of community members, who act as volunteer moderators, and elected moderators. Community members can participate in moderation through flagging content, voting, and contributing to discussions. Elected moderators have additional privileges and responsibilities to ensure community guidelines are followed. (source)
