morning :-)
rubs eyes
You're up early :)
just ate dinner
heh :) yeah I've got to leave in 1½ hours
01:36
Enjoy you're trip! See you next week
thanks :-) see you then!
01:48
You should be able to guess what I had for dinner - it's Thanksgiving Day here in Canada.
Server's timing out... I guess the trial's done?
AFK.
Shouldn't be done yet
02:06
@GeorgeEdison Someone was putting it through it's paces :)
02:56
Hmmm...
03:32
I managed to get an executable ELF file on to the server, but it won't run :(
"cannot execute binary file"... wait, I bet it's the wrong architecture
@MarcoCeppi: Is this a 64-bit server?
Never mind - a bit of investigation figured that out.
So I am willing to concede that your server is secure.
I cannot execute a chroot syscall using a C program (which is good - I shouldn't be able to) so I think you're good.
03:47
One more test...
Wow... I just allocated 1 GB of memory... time for more experimentation!
@MarcoCeppi: Can you please check how much memory is in use?
Waits for him to go crazy since I have allocated 10GB...
04:04
Awesome! Ondina PPR in 4 weeks!
Wait, Did i just miss the most awesome ssh test ever :/ hates GMT+5:30
Perhaps...
@GeorgeEdison the real deal breaker might be if you can allocate that amount of RAM and lock up the processor :).
(But that would just be evil)
04:20
Will be really hard soon since I'll be adding CPU priority and limiting long running memory intensive processes
@MarcoCeppi so now its possible?
Oh good.
Technically, yes. But it's still pretty difficult.
heh, writing a blog post bout' Ondina
04:39
@MarcoCeppi the server runs on 11.04 right?
@MarcoCeppi Did my trick work, though?
Did I really eat up 10GB of memory?
05:22
@AmithKK Stefano did the design? I never knew that.
@RolandTaylor Yeah, it was in Marco's blog.
Oh cool!
I didn't see that part before.
@GeorgeEdison Also they discussed in chat
@AmithKK you taught me something I didn't know :D! Congratulations!
05:28
I was trying not to star... but that was worth it :D
(No offence to Sara ♥)
(jk about the um... ♥, it's purely platonic! honest!)
BTW is that on Marco's blog?
@RolandTaylor yep
BTW Amith the link to Ondina in your post is broken.
it is?
Very.
The correct link is Ondina.co
@RolandTaylor TRISARATOPS IS DISSAPOINT
@AmithKK I'm getting a warning when I visit your site that I'm using a proprietary operating system >:(
@GeorgeEdison Good!
Why?
Because I already know that.
05:33
If you want to attract flies, you use bait, not poison.
okk
removes jquery script
In other words, if your goal is to get Ubuntu users, you need to attract Windows users first :)
Show them what life without walls is like :)
done!
:D
Now, back on topic :)
(if you noticed, that script was active on one of my 2buntu posts ) :P
jk

Thanks!
Bye all!

6 hours later…
12:02
@RolandTaylor Yeah, a lot of the skeletons were already designed by me - but he did the prettifying of it all. Something I'm not very good at.

3 hours later…
15:12
@MarcoCeppi Oh! Got it :)

4 hours later…
19:23
What is Ondina?
jrg
jrg
19:53
@Jacob It's marco's awesome new hosting company.
@jrg oh
@MarcoCeppi: I ran my evil program again.
Can you confirm that it ate 10GB of RAM?
Nope.
@GeorgeEdison The machine doesn't even have 10GB of ram.
root@devdina:~# free -m
             total used free shared buffers cached
Mem:           592        585          6          0         20        417

Swap:            0          0          0
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi you didn't even give us perl. :(
You'll get Perl, PHP, Ruby, and Python soon enough.
jrg
jrg
20:05
guess i'll be thankful that I actually have vim. :P
First is to test security, then to add layers of applications
Quite a few people have picked up the cause of breaking this poor little server
So far the only exploits found were ones with Apache
jrg
jrg
I'm trying!
i can't figure out anything though.
just tried rm -rf /*
IT DIDNT WORK!!! :(
is sad
@jrg What would you want to break it?
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi You asked me to break it. :P
What would you want added to the jail to try to break it?
jrg
jrg
20:10
Oh, i'd be interested in trying a few perl scripts that i've found.
other than that.... can't think of anything.
Perl it is
jrg
jrg
cool.
I was afraid to add Perl because of Dean. Dean is a Perl god more or less. He scares me when I give him Perl
jrg
jrg
haha nice
t124@devdina:~$ perl ./test.pl
Hello World.
jrg
jrg
20:17
I noticed. Sweet.
I want to try to setup rbenv
@MarcoCeppi ???
It doesn't have 10GB of RAM?
No.
It has like 700MB
^---- That's weird.
It allocated 10000 chunks of 1MB each.
Maybe it used swap?
Is it running right now?
20:24
Yes.
It's /home/t118/test.
I programmed it to display an error if an allocation fails, so I'm baffled.
Yay EC2 Virtual Memory
Heh... that's just too weird.
Prepare for a really big test.
cat /dev/random - nope.
It's /dev/urandom.
What do you mean by 'nope'?
yeah, killed with fire.
20:32
:( How big a file did I create?
Not sure, but the Disk IO was killing the systems load.
You wanted us to break stuff :)
You did it!
It's /home/t118/bigfileondisk if you want to stat it.
Need to limit Disk file size and other things in limits.conf
20:37
Found an unusual way of getting its size.
It's 145MB.
@Marco:
t118@devdina:~$ ps
cannot find /proc/version - is /proc mounted?
ps doesn't work ----^
No proc in the jail
nor does killall
I know, but then what point is there in having ps in it?
@MarcoCeppi your server only has 700meg of RAM?
Okay - this isn't a production server. It's just for testing SSH
And trying to break SSH
and the Jail
The production servers are a lot bigger
Hey... Perl is on the server.
20:52
Yeah, playing with rbenv ATM
21:04
@jrg Almost got rbenv working on the test server if you want to try it out in ~1 hour
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi Sweet.
I'll have to read up on rbenv's docs before I do anything, but I'll give it a go.
21:28
@MarcoCeppi: >:) Got nmap onto the server... scans for backdoors...
@GeorgeEdison nmap -v -sn 19.168.0.0/16 Wrong IP Address, Wrong Range too :)
Only noobs and home users use 192.168 :)
@MarcoCeppi Oh right...
The '2' key on my keyboard sticks a bit.
I missed pushing it.
Still, don't even bother with the 192.168 range :)
Aren't you impressed that I got libstdc++ and all of nmap's files onto the server?
I should have got dpkg on there or something...
I think my testing is done now, I can't turn up anything.
@MarcoCeppi are you looking for any Ordina staff?
21:42
Not at the moment and not for a while. Since I'm bootstrapping this entire operation there won't be any money until after public launch and even then it'll be sometime before I start hiring.
It's probably the #1 slowdown for Ondina is I have to continue my day job to fund the operation
@MarcoCeppi I'd take stock options LOL. just kidding, Good luck
Thanks, my goal is to keep this company away from investors who may take their hand in the company and push away from quality for a quick payout.
I'm actually starting a 501(c)3 shortly after PPR which will be providing hosting for non-profit organizations
@MarcoCeppi You know, do you think I could help with that? I provide free hosting for NPOs/FOSS groups and maybe we could join our efforts?
Well the hosting won't be free, but the company would be able to operate at very lax tax standards.
@MarcoCeppi oh.
21:48
The idea behind this: Donate a large % of the profits from Ondina to the 501c3 that hosts other non-profit companies. The 501c3 Pays Ondina for using it's servers under a special contract. Ondina gets large tax reliefs for donating money to a 501c3 and non-profits get an extremely cheap - potentially free - platform all while the money stays "in the family".
It'll probably be free to host but paid support - something like that.
@MarcoCeppi got ya.
A friend of mine, she's a lawyer for non-profits and small business, turned me on to this idea a while ago. It pretty much seems like a win-win-win. I'll keep you in mind when I start gearing that up. Are you incorporated at all?
@MarcoCeppi I have a LLC for some app stuff, but not related to the free hosting.
@MarcoCeppi Your DNS panel looks cool
Thanks! :D
@MarcoCeppi Yeah that seems interesting, I'm currently looking to move away from my current job so I'm looking for other places.
@MarcoCeppi BTW I'd be glad to help during startup without compensation.
@GeorgeEdison can you install something for me on your VPS
22:16
Anyone still here :)
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi let me know when you've got rbenv setup.
(no rush)
I'm here.
@Jacob: What is it?
@GeorgeEdison The ServerDensity monitor daemon
How do I do it?
@GeorgeEdison I'll email you a link and login, it'll give you stepbystep
22:25
K.
22:44
@Jacob I didn't get the email...
@GeorgeEdison Still working sorry
