oh, they are pingable here.
@forest you probably already saw this but...
> Researchers Hacked California's Digital License Plates, Gaining Access to GPS Location and User Info
> Curry says a vulnerability in the Javascript of the website let the team change an account type from a regular user to an administrator, giving them access to GPS location and all information of registered users: this info includes “vehicles people owned, their physical address, phone number, and email address.”
.... Javascript.
Client side.

@SPArcheon Anyone putting a digital license plate on their car is looking for trouble!
I've seen some important websites with client-side checks that would make your skin crawl...
Any time someone wants to use technology to do something important, they're looking at a future data breach.

@forest yep, that idea is really stupid.
Why should the license plate have any digital component in the first place?
12:00
In theory?
you can 'just' change the style and content of the licence plate
in practice
you can do it in about 5 minutes with a screwdriver? :D
....
thought that rang a bell

Anything that can be done with JavaScript eventually will be done with JavaScript...

Solution without a problem seems about right in modern tech. No idea why, but "progress" in the past decade seems to have been largely defined by taking an existing thing (juicer, license plate, baby toy) and adding Bluetooth and Smartphone connectivity to it.
If I had a dedicated FGO playing machine, I would abandon smartphones immediately, grab an old Nokia brick and an iPod and that's it.
I don't want my phone to be "smart". I don't want anything in my home to be smart. "Smart" means it thinks for me. I'm the human, I do the thinking. The task of the tool, be it phone, music player, license plate, fridge, is to do the one thing it was designed to do, not to "connect to my phone"
When you buy a nixie tube clock today, you can't configure all the settings on the clock. It has to be done on a smartphone.
