RCE and possibility to create a root account is pretty bad

One issue that I rarely see people talk about is users blindly confirming security-critical prompts
It seems like developers think "Just ask the user if they really want to do that" solves all issues
But the thing is, most users have no clue what is going on on their computer

@MechMK1 Rather than having the user answer those prompts, should computers have a set policy (presumably from IT) that makes the decisions instead? (Am I reinventing something?)

That works if you are in a managed environment, not with private devices
I have a question: Which protocol should I use to make files available in my home network?
Journeyman Geek
What's wrong with SMB?
MechMK1
I wanted to do SMB, but SMB reacts horribly to certain file names containing "bad" characters like | or ;
Let me quickly see which ones
Journeyman Geek
At which point, I'd wonder what your environment is like
MechMK1
Linux, Windows and MacOS
Windows doesn't like handling files which include
|
, but doesn't have any trouble downloading files with that in the name
Also, I can't really access my files outside my local network without VPN
Journeyman Geek
hmm
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebDAV
seems to be the other semi universal one
MechMK1
2:30 PM
Which on SFTP and HTTP, I can (with private keys on my devices)
I tried WebDav right now
But I can't seem to get nginx to work with WebDAV
I tried for some hours now, but creating new files fails
I tried some workarounds, but those require me to build nginx from source
Journeyman Geek
I was also considering git ._.
MechMK1
For music files? :D
Journeyman Geek
....... yes
MechMK1
i doubt VLC supports that
Journeyman Geek
the idea of "git clone" to make a full copy of my music is... oddly useful
MechMK1
2:33 PM
That is true
Journeyman Geek
and at the moment I maintain 2 copies of it at least
MechMK1
The issue is...do I want some "universal", file-based protocol or something more application-specific
Journeyman Geek
(master + one copy for my music server I access from my phone)
MechMK1
Would you like to know my dream setup?
Journeyman Geek
:D of course
MechMK1
2:35 PM
A "media server" based on Linux, which announces the entire library (Music, Movies, etc) via network, and clients, which can stream them via network
I am not sure if there is such a thing already
Journeyman Geek
oh
there's a few
Jellyfin, Kodi...

I need to figure out what quality I want all the movies at, for the TV
1 hour later…

9:58 PM
1080p is probably a safe baseline
4k if you wanna future proof but UHD media isn't that common
