@A.Hersean I don't have a printer and the only IoT devices are an ESP32 with custom firmware I meddled with, and a set top box running Ubuntu 20.04 that I installed myself

I actually have a 80kg laser printer but it is needing repairs so isn't installed, and does not count

I was reading an article on /r/netsec about SAML being dangerous... as an non-expert on SAML, the article made sense. so I got to the comments and most people were roasting the blog author for speculating about things he aren't expert in and saying the experts are wrong

it reminds me of people with absolutely no medical background saying that the experts that created the vaccines are wrong

I've been toying with a comparison between cybersecurity quackery and medical quackery for a while

I see it most in the way that health enthusiasts and computer enthusiasts who never get formal education often get persuaded by alternative solutions that are good at selling themselves

It's free for anybody to post things online. Just because somebody is persuasive doesn't mean they know what they're talking about.

and nobody knows you know nothing about vpn, crypto, medicine, economy...

so it's very easy to sound expert to non-experts

I know very little on macOs, but if I talk to people that know less than me I can pass as an Apple engineer

I never worked with macos, all my knowledge is reading things here and there, but I can paint a picture of it that can convince people that know less than me

and I was watching a video on why starlink is doomed, and it makes sense too... they spend around $2k per dish and sell it for $500, and charge $100/mo... so it takes more than an year to recover that cost. and the satellites cost around 100k each and have a lifetime of 5 years

@nobody I mean, some do? But there's like a difference. There's enthusiasts who really dig into things, and then there's enthusiasts who don't get that far

I know a few guys who are ultra nerds, been around for years, built their own computers

But they have a amateur knowledge of the security side

Basically, whatever they read in forums somewhere or saw in a news article

Like they have opinions on security, but their opinions are because somebody else said so

"See I'm using this not that" Okay, but did you build a threat model or are you doing it just because somebody else likes it?

I see. I think I've met too few people. Because I only ever met two types of computer enthusiasts. Those that don't care about security, and those that actually try to understand what they're doing. (Well, okay I've met skiddies too, but I don't consider them enthusiasts)
