:D
Welcome to planet earth, 4billion girls!

@FireQuacker He's thinking outside the box.

Q: Why do some people think that handholding should be censored in anime?

KaliferOn Crunchyroll, there is an anime called TONIKAWA. In the comment section of episode 5, someone commented that there was too much handholding that was uncensored, over 900 people have liked the comment, and there was a lot of replies supporting the commenter. 10/30/20 The 2 kisses are one thing,...

Because unprotected handholding is LEWD

@MechMK1 Huh, I thought it was because of the pandemic

Okay, literally imagine two people HOLDING HANDS, ON TV - UNCENSORED
They might as well have sex then and there!!!

@MechMK1 I'm afraid I can't imagine that. I stick to my morals

Better that way
I've seen way too much already

Uh, I was being sarcastic (in case you think I'm serious)

11:16 AM
Nobody ever doubted that
fuck now I'm making those puns again
I'm blaming it on Friday and lack of sleep

which puns?

Nevermind
:D
I am honestly so thankful for the "You wouldn't get it" meme

@MechMK1 But I don't get that either :)

What? The Joker?

I dunno

11:20 AM
Just a scene from the movie
In a sense, the Joker is all of us

Glad the joker is everyone. I'm safe ;)

:D

Sorry, I said I wouldn't do this again, but I couldn't resist

Also Scáthach-Skaði's NP gain is out of this world. 3rd card Overkill charges 50% NP
Like what the fuck, who thought that was even remotely acceptable?!

Not me!

11:23 AM
Also, want to have some fun?
Google "Nero Claudius" and click on images :D
Fate has literally taken over history

@MechMK1 Nothing happens :(
Wait what? Nero was a roman emperor?
Oh I get it now :D

I can't wait for some poor student to get tasked with making a presentation about Nero Claudius and he starts to talk about her

I thought that was just the name of an anime character so those image would be expected

No, it's actually a roman emperor

Yeah, got it now :D

11:27 AM
Fate has the gimmick that "heroic spirits" that shaped humanity can be summoned to fight for their master. And these heroic spirits don't necessarily represent how they were, but how they saw themselves or wanted to be seen
Seems Nero wanted to be a cute girl :D

Hahahaha

For some lesser-known mythological figures, it's the same
Like Scáthach from Irish mythology
some historical figures are still safe
Like Leonardo Da Vinci

And Hitler

Though in Fate, the reason why he has become a "girl" is somewhat sensible, as Da Vinci strived for universal beauty, and thus an androgynous body, or rather a body with both male and female characteristics, would be seen as universally beautiful
I am honestly disappointed we don't have Hitler as servant
I would spend ALL my money for hitler as cute anime girl
Long, blonde hair, blue eyes, traditional clothing
But my heart belongs to Minamoto-no-Raikou. How could it not?
Just look at her! She's perfect!

Our definitions of perfect differ :)

11:34 AM
Once you learn of her personality, you would agree
Or maybe not
Not everyone is into that

My first problem with her is that she is anime
nobody has been suspended from The DMZ for 5 years

Technically, not
It's the guy on the right, historical figure in feudal japan
Literally so OP they made legends about him

Charles Geneviève Louis Auguste André Timothée d’Éon de Beaumont was a French man who spyed dressed as a woman in England. Obviously in FGO he became a girl. But why dress him/her as a man instead of putting him/her in a dress as he used to? For once that a guy wore a dress IRL, he is portrayed in FGO in pants...

NO!
d'eon is not a girl in FGO
Officially he counts as male
He receives more damage from Queen Medb's attacks too

11:41 AM
That is a guy!
Literally

He his missing something, then...

Like what?
Dude just has tight pants

Very very tight then. So tight his attributes are non-existant.
But yeah, in the code the character has "attribute: man".

Doesn't mean non-existant just because you can't see a huge bulge in his pants

So admitting your point of view for the sake of the argument: why, for once that a guy was trans before it was cool, is the character portrayed as a guy instead of a woman. Half the males became females, but not him?

11:46 AM
Fun Fact: Both d'Eon and Astolfo could give chocolate (female) and receive chocolate (male)
@A.Hersean He doesn't seem to care at all
In several dialogues, he says he doesn't mind being a man or a woman for you, because what matters to him is that he can be by your side, and he will act in whichever way serves you the most.
As for why he's not "trans"? The reason is simply because it's japan, and they don't see transsexuality as this huge focal point like the US does.
Astolfo on the other hand is a bit of a weird one. In Fate/Extra, it was revealed that he was male, but in F/GO, his gender is "a secret"
But it's heavily implied he's male, because, well, it's already canon anyways

So, (s)he is both, but they choose "male" in the code because it was too difficult to add a 3rd gender? Still, they default for female as soon as they can get away with it, so I find it strange that they did not do it for him.

Astolfo says he likes to dress the way he does because he wants to be cute
No, d'eon isn't both
D'Eon is male. If he'd undress, you'd see a penis.
One moment, I got a call coming up

Still, I can't understand why they didn't make him female. I do not compute.

I still don't understand why anime have to portray some boys as girls
my anime knowledge would fill a post-it compared to you guys, but I've seem this a couple times... Haku on Naruto, for example
why make Haku a boy? I was as surprised as Naruto when we found out Haku is a boy

12:02 PM
@nobody Nobody has been... :D

some males are very femine, some females are very mascluine
and wow I can't spell

me neither

@ThoriumBR Haku is a boy for drama: Naruto is surprised, half the readers/viewers are also => that's a good plot device. In FGO, that's just because originally Fate stay/night is a hentai visual novel, of the harem kind, where the main protagonist is a male that can fuck the side characters. Then it was adapted in anime dropping the hentai stuff, but the characters (mostly female) remained.
Fate has roots in the harem genre, but when lots of historical figures (so, mostly male) were added, they had to become female to stay in the harem genre. Also, in the original Fate stay/night, the King Arthur was female, so there's a huge precedent.

makes sense while making no sense...

In the original Fate, Arthur was a female because who she was was not important, but she had a big epic sword, that obviously was name Excalibur, so she had to be Arthur's reincarnation. That was just lazy writing.
In the previous VN by the same editor (also adapted in anime, Shingetsutan Tsukihime, quite a good one), they did not bother to integrate an existing mythology, and they avoided this misportrayal of characters.

12:24 PM
@JourneymanGeek Since the nobody was at the beginning of the sentence and was not capitalized, it's refering to my username. Sorry, no ambiguity here :)

How can you still post here while being suspended?

@A.Hersean because nobody has been suspended for 5 years 🤣
I think that max chat suspension is about a year

1:07 PM
@JourneymanGeek I know, that was supposed to be a joke.
It's Friday, don't expect good ones

@A.Hersean Journeyman probably unsuspended me :)
What's with Friday, though?

because we are all tired because of the workweek?
*IT Analysts immunized with AstraZeneca vaccine shows no adverse reactions:*
According to studies, symthoms like headaches, excessive fatigue, generalized pain and death feelings are normal on those people.

Hahahaha :D
@ThoriumBR Does the first line of your message show up italicized to you?
I see it italicized in the starboard, but not in the message itself

1:23 PM
no, it shows default text encased in asterisks
both on vivaldi and on firefox

chat sure has a lot of bugs

they count on us doing the formatting...
after a while you don't even see the codes... all I see is bold, italic, strikeout, display:none...

@ThoriumBR  I guess I'm just too young right now

Since it's friday, time for a music suggestion
@ThoriumBR Haha same
I feel like my headphone adapter is fucked

1:40 PM
strange... only 19 likes and no comments? for something almost a decade old? 20 likes now

You should hear it in high quality
I can provide FLAC directly ripped from the CD if you like
YouTube compression (and mp3 conversion) really doesn't do TAM justice

I liked it

Also, anyone know where I can buy a Chord Mojo online?

have to buy medicine for my cat now, she is pretty much dying

Oh dear

1:42 PM
she got here 4 months old with a nasty bite 3cm away from the neck, and the infection got coming and going for an year
the wound would close, fur grows back, and 3-4 months later the wound appears again...
this time she spend 10 days interned at the veterinarian, they discovered a massive infection INSIDE the muscles, and that infection appears to have penetrated the medula
she lost almost half her weight, and her balance is gone, she don't even have the reflex to right herself when dropped (and I catch her, obviously)
the prognosis is meningitis, and if is the bacterian meningitis she can somehow recover if she survives long enough to the medicine to work

I hope the best

losing 6 cats in a year is sad... she had 5 kitties earlier this year, but she is a very small cat and the kitties were more mouse babies than cat babies... 2 died on the first night, one died 3 days later, and the 2 surviving were going very well. they were 3 weeks old, starting to walk around, but the older cats from the neighbors entered our home at night and killed both kitties.

Oh dear
I am so sorry to hear that

when we got up in the morning one was cold dead and the other was still breathing... I rushed to the veterinarian but it died on the way there. and now she is dying too
she got the kitties earlier this year, not this month... edited...

Sadge, I like cats, although I am still somewhat scared of them

2:44 PM
good thing feline meningitis cannot infect humans, and can be treated... viral meningitis is death sentence
one of those days I was reading on reddit about rabbies... it was scarier than I remembered. it have a latent phase that can last for years (fortunately not infectious in this phase) and the "active" phase that lasts for 2-3 weeks, is highly infectious, and is lethal...
there are less than 10 survivors worldwide since the records started, and I cannot say those few are fortunate...

I'm trying to understand how the hell it could be possible to find out whether a package on Ubuntu (or linux in general) is actually up to date or not
I don't know if it could be an acceptable question here on SE. Anyway, I'm looking at VLC as an example

it's possible... apt have a record of every installed version, and a database with the latest available version

Ubuntu's latest LTS release (20.04) has VLC 3.0.9.2-1 in the repos. The latest release of VLC on the official website is 3.0.14. Snap has the latest, by the way, 3.0.14, but I'm still not sure what are the pros and cons of snap vs official repos (my latest question here was about this, got 6 upvotes so far, but no answers)

so apt-get (or apt, or aptitude) surely have something to check
@reed now I understood your question...
and there's no easy way

what I mean is how to check if it's up-to-date with security patches. Because software in stable repos (especially for LTS, long term suppors releases, is never really up-to-date)

Ubuntu will grab a version, patch it for its distro, and package it for distribution... VLC is free to release whatever they want, but ubuntu won't package it the next day

4:12 PM
For Ubuntu (and Debian) it's easy. You can by default assume you are a few minor versions behind.
/s

I don't like snaps very much, they solve one problem and create a dozen more... like every snap is way larger than the equivalent deb or rpm, because they ship all dependencies
and as every gtk program ships gtk libs, you will have the same lib on a lot of snaps
and updating snaps is still a pain... if libgtk-2 get updated, for example, you will have to update the same file on every snap that uses it

It's confusing because VLC 3.0.9.2-1 (from the repo) was published in April 2020 according to launchpad (launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/3.0.9.2-1). From the VLC website though, the latest security issue was patched in VLC 3.0.13, which was released in 2021. See this: videolan.org/security/sb-vlc3013.html
So should I suppose that VLC in Ubuntu's repos has not been patched to fix that vulnerability (and at least other two reported on VLC's website after April 2020)?
@ThoriumBR, I'm undecided, I both hate and love snaps. Not sure if they are better for security, that's why I even asked a question

sometimes backport the patch to their version to fix the vuln, but not bump the version to implement the new features

right now though it seems that if I wanted to publish something personal and unofficial called "firefox-official" I could do it, and nobody will review it, as long as it doesn't have permissions to access the whole system (containerized). With access to lots of stuff, I guess they are going to manually review the package (or so they say)

it will end up like the "portable" versions for all windows programs
ten dozen copies of msvbvm60.dll, winsck32.ocx, riched32.dll scattered everywhere
every Java based program shipping the entire JRE
I don't know if snap uses delta updates, because if they don't the bandwidth reqs will skyrocket once you have the majority of your apps being a snap

4:29 PM
they definitely waste a lot of space

and memory... they have to load dozens of copies of basically the same libs over and over again
so in a gtk-heavy environment they will load libgtk3 over and over again, and libgtk is around 8MB on my system
imagine loading it for every gtk-based app
and not only libgtk, but all other libs: libjpeg/libpng, network libs, io libs...

however I'm not sure all the software is actually duplicated, I'm not sure how it works, it might have some kind of optimization, but I don't know

grab one snap package, unpack it, and compare

at least I read that it's not actually as bad as it would seem at first, yet it's definitely going to waste more resources anyway of course

you will find a /usr/lib full of libs...
the same libs you already have on your system

4:41 PM
do you think I could ask if VLC from the official repos is secure here? Not sure it will be accpeted
or I could ask if my method for deducing it's insecure makes sense
my reasoning is that the package in the repo was published before some security advisories and later versions were published
yet I can't believe a LTS Ubuntu has an insecure VLC in the official repos, it sounds pretty serious to me
worrying

5:12 PM
sometimes they backport the patch but not bump the version
you have to check if this is the case

what do you mean? A name change is expected anyway I guess
so from 1.2.3 to 1.2.3-ubuntu1

it will go from 1.2.3-789 to 1.2.3-795 for example... but the major, minor and revision will stay

yeah

so you will see vlc 3.0.9.2-123 on the repository, but you will say you have vlc 3.0.9
and that .2-123 will be the backported patches

exactly. The problem here is that 3.0.9.2-1 was published more than a year ago, and meanwhile a few vulns have been discovered and fixed by VLC

5:18 PM
I have 3.0.14, and looking at Help->About I don't have the full packet version

however I'm writing a question anyway
what distro are you on?

RHEL 8.4
but I am using the snap because vlc isn't on the corporate repo
and that repo misses A LOT of needed packages

ah ok, on snap it's totally up-to-date though!

I have it on my windows too, and it's 3.0.14

that's one of the pros of snap I've noticed. If the maintainer publishes on snap, officially (vlc does, chromium, and some others I guess) then they are going to be fully up-to-date and they will be updated very quickly after the release

5:27 PM
it's easier to the developer: a "works on my machine" version gets packaged and the same package runs everywhere
easier to the distro too: grab the "runs on my machine" fat snap file, host it, done
snap is kinda like "docker for desktop apps"

yeah, as I said snaps have some advantages, we cannot deny it. I'm just not sure if at the end of the day it will improve things (security-wise, especially), or not. I'm not really concerned about the waste of resources, as long as it's not too much of a waste... HDDs are big nowadays, RAM not as big ok, but security is what is going to be more and more important now and in the future

Unsolicited caller wanted to help me update my satellite and/or cable TV
He asked me to tell him the model number on my remote
Since I don't have cable or satellite, he didn't recognize it
He seamlessly switched from asking to help me update for one provider to doing an update for another provider
Chances it wasn't a scam are near 0.001%
I had no idea that there were cable TV scammers out there...
"I'm going to help you update your TV so you get more channels. Now which provider do you use?" ...Right

Q: What stack exchange is good for debating about gay culture?

bluejaykeI strongly disagree with gay culture and believe it should be totally and completely outlawed,I have many arguments to present for such a case, but was wondering, first of all, IF there is any particular stack exchange to do this at, or if stack exchange is not meant for debating at all?

Holy shit, what a troll!

Q: Community Ads for 2021

JNatWe're almost halfway through 2021, and in case you missed it, Community Promotion Ads are gonna be a bit different this time! TL;DR: submit and vote for ad proposals before August 2nd! What are Community Ads? Community Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, or...

So what do you guys think? Should I submit an ad for EFF or Tor Project?

every time I see "community-vetted" it reminds me of Boaty McBoatface

8:36 PM
@forest Tor Project, yes
I'm not sure how EFF is related to security

@nobody Huh? They're the reason cryptography is legal in the US.

they are a strong ally on the privacy protection battle

Yeah, well, I dunno, when I think of EFF I think of privacy, not security.
Granted, privacy is dependent on security

Privacy is an important aspect of security in many threat models.

Right, so then EFF is probably a nice one too then

8:43 PM
Things EFF pioneered or championed: Legal status of cryptography (US v Bernstein), switching to stronger algorithms (EFF Deep Crack showing how weak DES was), ubiquitous encryption on the internet (LetsEncrypt)

almost every question here about VPN is concerned about privacy, not security.

@ThoriumBR Which is ironic because VPNs are misused 99% of the time. :P

LetsEncrypt is EFF's? I didn't know that...

"championed"
They weren't the sole funder.
But EFF was a major sponsor and pushed for it hard (also, they're a co-founder of LE).

So, what's the EFF's ad going to advertise?
Like, asking for donations?

8:45 PM
@forest yep! they want protection against something irrelevant and share their entire life live on facebook to everyone to see...

@nobody Probably. Or just a link to eff.org.

a link to eff in a banner saying: "SE was sold to another company. What does that mean for your privacy?"
it would be funny to see, it would be like when Signal tried to create ads for Signal on Instagram and got instaban...

hah

Haha, never making it pass CMs

and would probably mean ban for the unlucky soul trying

8:48 PM
For sure.
But tbh at this point, I have no idea what the purchase means for SE.
It might be really bad, or it might be neutral.

@ThoriumBR Hm, I'd like to try then. But I'm not sure I'll be able to make the troll subtle enough. Likely a task for @MechMK1

for me it could be the same as when SuSE was sold to novel, later to attachmate, later to i dont remember who... until got free again
@nobody I am not good at it either

@ThoriumBR By and large the worst case was when Sun was sold to Oracle.
And OpenSolaris was killed.
Seriously, Solaris had so much potential.

@forest when anything was sold to oracle

A powerful community was building around it.

8:51 PM
that was sad... Solaris was such a fine OS

Some of the technologies it uses blow away Linux equivalents.

and OpenSolaris was a great project...

E.g. dtrace and zones.
OpenSolaris was just Solaris, after Sun had made it open source.
But then when Oracle bought it, they closed it, and the Illumos project forked it.

and sun bought mysql for no reason, and oracle bought SUN for what? I still don't understand why grabbing it...

But Illumos can't keep up with the development pace and it is now vastly inferior to Solaris.

8:53 PM
didn't oracle DMCA'd opensolaris to kill -9 it?
or something like that?

No. It's still active (the Illumos fork).
But OpenSolaris was the name of the official Sun Solaris when they decided to open it.
Illumos is the "look ma, no trademark!" fork of the latest public version of OpenSolaris.
And Oracle can't touch Illumos any more than NetBSD can touch OpenBSD.

2 hours later…
10:39 PM
Fun fact: In Solaris, the command killall is taken very literally. It's the equivalent to kill -1.
So someone who tries to killall -9 buggyprogram will end up shutting off their machine!
