oh thanks. didn't want to fish for congrats. ;) rory gave me a little bit of advice on interviews some loooong time ago, when I finally decided to change jobs
took some time and some twists and turns, but now everything looks great
Congratulations to @Schroeder for hitting 100k! Our 5th 100k-er
He not only manages to be the most active moderator on Sec.SE, but also has answered over 1500 questions
Well done!
Awww, isn't it lovely that you use my real name here, even though I don't use it anywhere else on Stack Exchange? It's almost as if you purposefully post my personal information without my explicit consent to do so
@MechMK1 If there's information being shared without your consent, you should be able to mod flag to have it deleted, and there's probably also a way to request an employee to censor it so it doesn't even show up for room owners
@FireQuacker I already flagged it, but can't really add more. I just think it's a dick move to do after expressing heartfelt congratulations in an attempt to bury an old grudge
:54514997 Ignoring the issue of whether or not Mech may be a bigot (because I doubt he cares much what you or I think about him anyway), even if he was why do you feel that gives you an excuse to be rude or insulting?
Nah, I asked him about a pretty special situation, so it's hard to re-use the advice, but to boil it down a little: be yourself and communicate what you expect from the company.
@ConorMancone I dunno. Not even sure we have to discuss the issue further as I just ignored him now and it seems to have been cleared (as far as possible) by the mods. But to be honest: I really really liked this place maybe one-two years ago. And a lot has changed in the meantime. I attribute a lot of this change to him.
@FireQuacker: Yeah, additionally you won't be happy at the company when you are only adjusting to their needs
@TomK. Note how, while I don't appreciate the way your comments took the chat down a dark alley, I'm able to discuss it with you without resorting to insults. However if the best you can do is ignore a person then that is at least something, so indeed let's move on with our lives...
@RoryAlsop I guess starting out is the hardest. If you have little work experience, it can be hard to find a job, and you don't know how to judge them, anyway.
@RoryAlsop That's true. My last job turned into a dead end after a couple years, and I was not very happy that last year. However I was able to at least use it to get experience with some new skills, and that landed me my current job which I'm very happy about.'
My rule is usually that unless a job is reaching the point where I'd rather jump out a window than go to work, I'll at least give things a few months to see if the situation can be changed or I can at least use it to launch the next "phase" of my career
Maybe not the best analogy :) Like Rory said though, I'm usually willing to put up with some short term unhappiness, especially if it may work out better in the long term.
ah, that's what you two mean. I meant: if you have a ton of - for instance - student loan debt, then it probably doesn't matter that much what kind of job you get; you are first and foremost happy that you have a job
@ConorMancone My first career job was okay, but very unstructured, and it paid me less in my pocket than my rent each month, so I slowly got more and more in debt. But it gave me great experience which got me a considerably better job after a couple of years
But if you look at the documentation, you aren't using the camera properly unless a) everybody stands in the building for 15 minutes first, b) each person comes to the camera one at a time, and c) they stand exactly the correct distance away, for several seconds, with their head at the right angle
Even then, it's going to be accurate to maybe 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you consider that people don't even start at the same temperature (98.6 Fahrenheit is just an average), then you realize that fevers could start as low as 99 degrees Fahrenheit--which might be a normal temperature for other people
Not to mention that some people are asymptomatic
I guess you have to have some heuristic for compliance. Temperature is... something.
@MechMK1 Stuff like this is why I don't worry overmuch about giant companies or governments turning evil
I mean, they could cause a lot of problems as side effects, but to be very efficient at evil they would have to be competent, and that's not something that happens often.
Like, I would worry about corrupt individuals abusing their privileges to exact revenge or other bad stuff
Eh, now that I think about it, my argument isn't holding water. The USSR was pretty corrupt and inefficient, and they were still able to do bad stuff on a wide scale. Same with the Nazis.
