@daya Weechat is nice, definitely one of the better clients. I use irssi personally (it's similar to weechat but a little simpler and more minimalistic). You managed to get on #twit on STS? Lots of great people to follow there (or just read scroll logs).
02:11
@J.J Nice!
02:36
This is interesting.
> Reduced attack surface area: Google has helped to improve KVM security by removing unused components (e.g., a legacy mouse driver and interrupt controllers) and limiting the set of emulated instructions. This presents a reduced attack and patch surface area for potential adversaries to exploit. We also modify the remaining components for enhanced security.
This is something that's been on my todo list for experimenting for a long time, specifically limiting the amount of instructions that are emulated (esp MSRs).
Though to be honest, while the PIC/PIT (i8254/i8259) could certainly be emulated in userspace, they aren't that complex. APIC probably should go to userspace though...
Hm, I wonder if there could be a slight security improvement by turning ASSERT() into BUG_ON() so it doesn't get optimized out by the compiler?
#define ASSERT(x) BUG_ON(!(x))
03:22
A possible interesting target for hardening (or exploitation).

5 hours later…

@J.J I didn't pick up any swag, unfortunately, but I got a good chat with the two vendors I need to talk to, and a good dinner with a couple of the old hands on Sec.SE
Anonymous
09:05
@RoryAlsop You should've said you'd be at Blackhat :(
Anonymous
(To be fair I only had the free pass, but nonetheless you should've said :p)
Anonymous
@forest Hah, yeah it was pretty fun!
11:45
New Spectre V1 variant:

> We explore one such variant, SPLITSPECTRE, in depth and demonstrate its applicability to a real-world scenario with the SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine. Further, we introduce SPECULATOR, a novel tool to investigate speculative execution behavior critical to these new microarchitectural attacks. We also present our findings on multiple CPU platforms.
12:47
@J.J I only was there for a couple of hours. Free ticket too - as I only found out this week that I could get there
12:57
@RoryAlsop as long as you are here, would you mind taking a look at my chat meta-question (I just remembered)?
https://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/151?m=47850926#47850926
13:13
damn..
Anonymous
Hah.
Anonymous
Oh, I just hit 1200 rep lol. That's funny.
14:11
I fail to see the comedy in that <:
because you hit the exact number?
Anonymous
14:46
@TomK. More like because I do not use the site and I gained rep :p
Anonymous
I don't know, I say lol way too much.
Anonymous
>.<
@J.J yeah, I also have some questions/answers that already have a lot of upvotes that still gain me rep over time
if you look at the top users per month you will almost always see one of the bears there, because they still gain rep through their many great answers
Anonymous
@TomK. Hah, that's true.
Anonymous
I would answer but I feel so...
Anonymous
14:52
Out of my depth to answer questions here.
Anonymous
So I don't.
Anonymous
Hmm Tom.
Anonymous
Question about CVs.
Anonymous
Do you think I should put my specific interests in security on it?
definitely
Anonymous
14:59
In a specific field or just in the general personal statement kinda' thing?
Anonymous
I am awful at this CV stuff.
most people are
Anonymous
I don't like "selling myself" as they call it.
Anonymous
It makes me really uncomfortable.
if you want I can take a look at it and give you some pointers
Anonymous
14:59
I feel like a wanker enough as it is let alone bigging myself up, I don't think I'm good at anything.
you don't need to compare yourself to Bruce Schneier or Jann Horn
you need to compare yourself to an 18year old who knows nothing about IT
Anonymous
That's a good point.
and personal interests are great in a CV/motivational letter
Anonymous
I just feel really awkward.
most people leave work and think about their hobbies, their families and a lot of other stuff
Anonymous
15:02
I'm really not great at all this fancy writing stuff.
to show that you are invested in what you are doing is really cool
as I said: everybody is bad at this. especially IT folks
Anonymous
Yeah that's true.
I reviewed applications a few weeks ago and most of them were horrible
Anonymous
Well, I will just add these in a separate box I think.
Anonymous
Like "hobbies2
Anonymous
15:03
Or something.
Anonymous
"Hobbies: none" ;D
one of them had an inspirational quote on the CV that went something like:
"I'm like a tree, I know my place, but I can still grow branches into new areas"
Anonymous
That is cringe.
Anonymous
I'd never write anything like that.
yeah, supercringe
Anonymous
15:05
I couldn't even bring myself to typing it.
Anonymous
I've just said this.
good :P
Anonymous
(I don't know if I should flex being young or not...)
Anonymous
"Young, driven cyber-security enthusiast with a strong passion for vulnerability research, cryptography and penetration testing, aiming to break into the cyber-security field in order to fulfill my dream of becoming a full-time vulnerability researcher"
Anonymous
Then I just mentioned that I am currently working on my OSCP (well, I've not bought the PWK course yet but nonetheless I am working on it)
Anonymous
15:08
And that's it. Maybe I should add something about what I can bring to the industry?
if you have something like "youngest network engineer that completed XYZ" put it in there
but I wouldn't do much more than that
Anonymous
Well, I think I might've been one of the youngest network engineers in the world.
Anonymous
I know people that do CCNA at like 14.
Anonymous
I don't know any who were network engineer at 16.
but that's probably a claim that is hard to prove
Anonymous
15:09
Yeah that's why I did not write it.
Anonymous
Didn't want to look like a prick...
but you could probably say "... completed XYZ in my company/school/whatever"
Anonymous
Hmm, okay. Do you think I should add anything about what I bring to the industry in that personal statement?
mentioning it once doesn't make you look like a prick IMHO. mentioning it three times does :P
Anonymous
I see that on a lot of CVs but I don't just want to throw in a load of buzzwords.
Anonymous
15:10
I feel like if I just write can bring "super awesome skills" and that kinda' stupid stuff it ruins the professionalism of my CV.
Anonymous
Or rather, destroys whatever tiny bit of integrity I might have.
I wouldn't add the "fulfill my dream" thing. You should talk about why you want to do something. Why are you motivated or what did motivate you to switch from network engineering to security?
yeah, that does nothing and every half skilled person in a management position sees through that
Anonymous
Problem is I don't even know why I want to switch to security.
Anonymous
I just like it.
then think about it
Anonymous
15:12
But I don't think I can put "i just like it" on my cv, lol.
sit down with a piece of paper, put your phone in a drawer and think think about it
Anonymous
I never go on my phone anyway so the drawer won't be necessary.
you know what I mean
Anonymous
Hmm, okay. I found a really cool job today.
Anonymous
And so I decided to update my CV because it has like 50 applicants and I really want it badly.
15:14
alright
Anonymous
So I thought, this is so much competition I really need a good cv.
Anonymous
It's for a vulnerability analyst role, junior role and they will pay for OSCP & things.
Anonymous
But with that many applicants, there will be people with degree applying so I wouldn't be surprised if my cv just gets tossed in the bin :(
can you show me?
not necessarily
Anonymous
Oh.
Anonymous
15:16
Okay, FeelsBadMan.jpg.
Anonymous
It's gone :(
Anonymous
No longer accepting CVs.
Anonymous
It was for "Maersk Line"
Anonymous
Don't they do shipping or something
Junior Vulnerability Analyst?
Anonymous
15:17
Yeah.
Anonymous
Why is that link so big.. Anyway.
Anonymous
THat's it.
Anonymous
It looks like a SOC role.
uh: Last application date: 25/1/2019
Anonymous
15:18
Yeah that's strange.
Anonymous
When I clicked Apply earlier.
Anonymous
It was fine.
Anonymous
But now it's gone..
okay, whatever
there will be new ones
the market is so thirsty for people right now
Anonymous
I don't know why that is so weird.
Anonymous
15:20
It just like stopped working, strange.
Anonymous
Anyway, I found a few today.
Anonymous
I will still submit my CV for the others.
anyway: what matters in a CV is clarity
nobody gives a flying fck about your A grades or your pets name or buzzwords
Anonymous
Yeah for my GCSEs I just put.
what matters is: what are your qualifications, what are you able to do
Anonymous
15:21
I put "A*-c"
and what do you want to do
Anonymous
I didn't put the actaul grades.
nobody wants to hire someone that applies for random jobs or that is unsure whether he/she actually wants to do the job
you want highly motivated people that can do what they say they can
Anonymous
Right now I am applying for SOC positions & pen-test positions.
Anonymous
That's it.
Anonymous
15:22
But without OSCP I don't think I will get a pen test role.
so you have to prove what you say you can: your CCNA is good for that, saying you work on your OSCP is also good, saying you participate in CTFs and in sec.se in your freetime is also great
and you have to substantiate why you want their job in a brief manner
Anonymous
Yeah I added that.
Anonymous
I didn't add anything about CTFs, I should link my GitHub.
Anonymous
I have some CTF writeups on there.
cool
Anonymous
15:24
Do you think I should link my blog?
Anonymous
I don't like associating myself with my alias very much.,
but mention the CTFs anyway, because I only check GitHubs if I'm unsure about a person
Anonymous
Okay. Should I mention the CTFs in the personal statement or under hobbies or something?
only if it is well maintained
Anonymous
My blog? It's not too bad.
Anonymous
15:25
I've got like three posts working on my 4th.
then don't
Anonymous
Okay. I only really keep it for my own learning benefit really.
Anonymous
I don't like writing much.
if you maintained it well for a year, start using it
Anonymous
Alrighty.
Anonymous
15:27
I will link the GitHub and talk about the CTFs for sure, although I have not a CTF in a hile.
Anonymous
I mentioned the HTB and Sec.Se as well.
cool
Anonymous
Hopefully the only time I will need to update this CV after today is when I need to add an exam.
Anonymous
Oh yeah, one more question - should I add my cert numbers or provide them upon request?
I think the latter will do
I hate scrolling through tons of certificates
our applicants sent us scans from their certificates that were 20+ years old
m(
Anonymous
15:33
Yeah I would prefer to provide them upon request anyway.
Anonymous
I prefer to email them from the cisco page than put the number.
Anonymous
Well, hopefully this is good.
Anonymous
@TomK. Stupid question, what's a cover letter for?
Anonymous
I mean, what do I put on it?
this is where your motivation should be explained
and in short: what you typically do is
"I can do X very good because I did Y in the past."
Anonymous
15:43
Ah thanks.
Anonymous
"Saying you’re a ‘problem-solver’ is about as helpful as explaining your preference for chocolate croissants over regular croissants."
Anonymous
LMAO
18:21
@TomK. I reckon it would be closed as too broad. Every company does things differently
@J.J when I was that age my CV was 2 sides of a piece of paper. A bit on my academic results (showing I could learn) a bit on my sporting results (interest, hobby, skill), a bit on my role teaching sailing (leadership, risk management), a bit on my computers (IT interest, techy skills) and a bit on where I had lived (some weird parts of the world - conversation starter)
That was pretty much it
18:38
@RoryAlsop alrighty

4 hours later…
Anonymous
22:37
@RoryAlsop Heh, I don't think I understand your point.
Anonymous
Presuming there is one?
