Omg do he was hacked?
did he try flooding it with electricity?
@AndrolGenhald heh, I asked the same question on SF

2 hours later…
04:01
Oh my god, SE is getting a "code of conduct"...
You can always tell when a community is going downhill when they add one of those.
Do we really have to specify that discrimination based on neurodiversity or "body size" is not allowed? Is that not covered by simply saying not to be rude?
I fail to conceive of a single situation where someone would get away with spouting racial slurs at someone just because the Be Nice policy says no bigotry but does not specifically say no racial slurs... All the CoC will be used for is as a weapon to be exploited, even if only to waste someone's time.
As an ex-troll (GNAA/ED/chan crowd), I can confidently say that codes of conduct are frequently abused by trolls and enable further community disruption. I have seen a number of communities completely collapse shortly after they added a code of conduct.
@forest shrug Its a draft, written by committee
(also, kinda what my answer says)
It's a draft which will likely go in unchanged.
Or with very trivial changes.
shrug or you can let folks know what you feel, and have a chance of making a difference
over complaining in a chatroom TPTB never see ;)
I did, with both a comment and answer.
But I realize that it will have no effect.
Heh, yeah no one will ever see this here. Right now I am just venting. :P
Odd
8 years here, and seeing everything, and I still figure that they care a little ;p
04:08
But do you really think they would just throw it away?
If anything, all they will do is add more "classes" describing what we can't discriminate against, further dividing people up. It's not like my opinion is going to make them say "Gee, good point. I guess we'll delete the draft and keep the Be Nice policy as is, even though our Lawyers are screaming at us."
I mean yeah, they care. I don't think it was made out of malice. However I do think that it's part of a spreading plague that is infecting quite a lot of the open source community, distracting people from the actual goal of such communities.
Gotta try? ;p
Cause personally I like the sheepdog approach to dealing with these things to the touchie feely approach...
Indeed. And if it passes, I'll create a new feature request to get it removed a few times and contact support over email. If that fails and I start seeing it abused, I'll just leave. Not like I never try. :P
> No subtle put-downs or unwelcoming language.
Cause I discriminate against people who think its ok to harass people.
04:12
I mean, really?
Oh, I hate that bit
its kinda insulting.
It really is. Is SE really going to add a policy on "microaggressions"?
There's a difference between saying that it's easy to Google (which is actual advice), and saying something extreme like "You're an idiot, you could have Googled that if you weren't so stupid and worthless!!!" (which is clearly "not nice").
Well eh
or post an answer, with the information lol...
and get the rep
04:16
But now this will make it difficult for me to say that someone can search for the answer. I'll have to either spoonfeed and reduce the quality of the site, not answer at all and leave the asker clueless, or mention that the answer is easy to Google, risking starting an argument where the CoC is abused.
I usually do that, but sometimes it's something really simple.
or if the question is really bad, find a reason to vtc, or downvote
question downvotes are free
Like, so simple that a comment to Google it is just a courtesy in the time before the question is inevitably closed. But apparently that's a put-down now.
I guess this all boils down to "I am very cynical and I hate things".
04:39
well its not that different from... LMGFY links
or I downvoted because links... which I hate

2 hours later…
Anonymous
07:15
LMGFY is the best service ever made.
Anonymous
Its like a small tease every time you use it.

Q: How to avoid Cox ISP customer service difficulties?

Eeshwar DasCox customer service representatives have been deceiving us and refuse to help. We have suffered severe security breaches while using Cox internet. They tend to make our issue worse whenever we ask them to help us. The least the representatives could do is help us. How do we get assistance fr...

why are you arguing with this person @forest ? this is just venting on another level
or a really bad pun
how do I avoid cox???
they want me to pay for bad service
I dont want no more cox
I want other service than cox
Good morning everyone!
I'll stop now
Anonymous
07:50
What do you mean Tom?
Anonymous
I'm confused now.
Anonymous
Is it not a serious question?
uuh
it probably is
but there's a 0.00001 chance that it isn't
which would be hilarious
Anonymous
Oh, good. Cus I answered, lol.
Anonymous
I don't get people that complain about their ISP, it's always the same outcome.
Anonymous
07:52
A. switch ISP B. deal with it.
Anonymous
There is usually nothing else that can be done. What are you going to do? Threaten them to increase your speeds...
dude
a lot of people are weird
i hate my ISP with a burning passion
but I cant change
Anonymous
Yeah I hate mine as well.
Anonymous
Same position, cannot change.
Anonymous
Well I can, but my speeds would go from 350 / 50.
Anonymous
07:53
To 100 / 10.
you complaining about people that are complaining about their isps is essentially the same thing :P
Anonymous
Well it wasn't a complaint more like a statement.
Anonymous
But yes you're right.
Anonymous
"Computer began downloading hundreds of blobs then froze"
Anonymous
This title made me laugh. I am not trying to be mean to a non-technical person but "hundreds of blobs"
08:13
Thanks for closing that Cox post - but I'd suggest that continuing to comment on an off topic post just encourages them. I have deleted it
@Joshua.J as far as I can tell all ISP's do the bare minimum to support their customers (only know of a couple of possible exceptions who major in customer support)
Anonymous
Yeah they do.
Anonymous
As Forest said in his comments they provide support as a sort of extra.
So my usual plan is to go with whatever offers the best speed/stability
Anonymous
Yeah. Thats why I am still with Virgin.
Anonymous
Speed.
Anonymous
08:17
I don't particularly like them and their field engineers do try and lie a bit to get themselves out of work which is understandable.
Andrews and Arnold would be my preference - but where I am they would be way too expensive and Talktalk hasn't annoyed me much this year
Anonymous
But yeah speed makes them worth it.
If they do I will move to Virgin - which would up my speed from 38 to 350
Anonymous
We don't have them down here, lol. I am guessing they run of the BT backbone?
As I only relatively recently moved up from 2 to 38 I'm still happy with the speed
For now
I think they use BT, yes
Anonymous
08:22
Yeah I expect.
Anonymous
AFAIK all ISPs except Virgin run off of the BT network.
Anonymous
I know that Virgin have their own backbone but I think they are the only people who do.

@Gilles Hahaha.
Anonymous
09:09
@forest I was going to answer that TLS question but I decided to wait and I've just looked at it and you stole the show lol :D
12:42
I now read @Gilles message three times. And three times I read on first glance: "The bear is vaccinating down south."
@Joshua.J Well...to me shopping malls are the portals to hell, but aside from that, yes, I think it is a great location and will do superb things for the area :-)
@TomK. as long as he's not anti-vaxxing down south
..or waxing down south..
12:56
@ Gillies hahahahah
@TomK. waxing gibbous
or better yet, waxing gibbons
13:16
I googled, and was only slightly disappointed: reddit.com/r/funny/comments/5ik7kx/moon_facts_the_waxing_gibbon
@RoryAlsop i had to google "gibbous" but it was worth it
@TomK. tis all about the moon
I figured
Many of my best pics of space things are the gibbous moon
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop Oh absolutely, I hate them. I cannot get into heavily crowded areas for a few reasons.
Anonymous
13:27
But I was referring to how it looks as in the visuals of the complex :D
@Joshua.J you have a spear through your head and can't get through revolving doors?
@Joshua.J oh, yes
that too
:-)
Anonymous
Umm, usually in crowded areas I end up having a fit from all the people.
@Joshua.J yeah - I get stressed out too much in crowds
@Joshua.J lol, you changed your name.
sure that's not from the spear?
13:28
I like places where there are literally hundreds of miles before the next human
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop Especially slow walkers.
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop Those people are the worst
@Joshua.J heh - they are fun though - you can mess with them
Anonymous
@daya Yes.
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop I agree. I really like remote places like the Lake District. It's just I usually miss the computer after a few days.
13:29
oh jeez
hasn't canada.se still not opened?
@TomK. lol
is there yet another proposal?
i really hope so
so far, every time it has closed through being badly scoped, no interest etc
but I dont think so
It's going to be a challenge to make a Canada.SE that works in the SE framework
13:30
I just thought that you two "remote places are the best!!1!"-lovebirds could go hang out there :P
@Joshua.J btw just "Jones" would be much better like 'jack & jones' :-)
@TomK. hahahahaha - looks like I get to visit Canada with work at the end of the year, which is nice. Weirdly I still haven't managed to get there
Considering where I grew up has one of the biggest connections to the Hudson Bay area
yeah, you brits better take any chance you get to leave your country legally as long as Brexit isn't reality yet :P
haha
sorry, we can forget that I said that and pull out of the politics discussion immediately ;)
Anonymous
13:34
@TomK. If I am going to any remote place with anybody it'd be Keira Knightley. As much as I love Rory I much prefer Keira ;)
Anonymous
@daya Well I decided to abbreviate my last name from a suggestion by @TomK.
@Joshua.J uuuh.. ooo..kay..
Anonymous
@TomK. >.>
Anonymous
I've liked her since I was 12 sorry >.<
again: ooo..kay
Anonymous
13:36
lol.
@TomK. lol
@Joshua.J she wasn't born when I was 12...probably
Anonymous
What year were you 12? lol.
@Joshua.J before 1985 when she was born
Anonymous
Yes she was born in '85, you're quite right.
13:37
@Joshua.J I googled
Anonymous
I may or may not have had that date in my head.
I think I only know of her from Pirates of the Caribbean
Anonymous
Nevertheless...
Anonymous
Shes double my age so... :'(
@Joshua.J you know .. when the big bang happened?
Anonymous
13:38
Huh?
@TomK. 12 years after the big bang
well - 12 years and 9 months, possibly
Anonymous
Oh. Haha.
Anonymous
@TomK. Having a celebrity crush isn't that weird, is it?
@RoryAlsop yeah.. that didn't come off right
@Joshua.J no no no no (yes)
Anonymous
13:40
Sigh I mean it is weird if you like them as much as I do I will admit that.
@Joshua.J nah, I don't know, yes? just maybe telling strangers on the interwebz is. but you're free person. do what you want
just gotta live with the consequences
@TomK. yeah - this means no stalking
You're like 16 ?
Anonymous
I am not sure there's any consequences... Maybe?
Anonymous
Me? I am 17.
13:41
@RoryAlsop true dat
OK.
Anonymous
Did you have a point or?
I was a bit surprised by the 'double my age'
Anonymous
Oh.
But it's fine :)
Anonymous
13:44
Yes it is.
Anonymous
:D
@Joshua.J there's this bash.org quote, where some guy called "xXh|tlerXx1337" or something yells: "HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO TELL THAT I'M 12??????????????". It's kinda the same when you tell me about your Keira Knightley crush. After that I'm pretty sure that you are 17. I mean I knew that before, but it just tells people a lot about you. Especially people who are experienced with social engineering. (There might be some here).
2
Anonymous
@TomK. Fair enough :D I get you.
Anonymous
You're probably right there very well might be some of those people.
@TomK. I wouldn't share who my celebrity crush was. Not because I am worried about people knowing my age, but because youg folks just wouldn't know who she was :-)
Anonymous
13:46
I am just not overly conscious of what I say, lol. Perhaps I should be but shrug
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop Marilyn Monroe? lol.
@RoryAlsop haha
@Joshua.J she was lovely, to be fair
Anonymous
Audrey Hepburn @RoryAlsop
@Joshua.J closer - gorgeous lady
Anonymous
13:47
Yeah agreed.
Anonymous
Shame she was so sad all the time...
@RoryAlsop a friend of mine had a talk about this topic some days ago with someone, his answer: Queen Mum
@TomK. hahahahahahaha
I'd like to have gone for a drink with her
Anonymous
You're really making me think now @RoryAlsop
Anonymous
If Audrey Hepburn is closer...
Anonymous
13:48
My knowledge of older "celebrities" isn't that great.
hah
She was a legend ;)
Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek Audrey Hepburn you mean?
Anonymous
Yes.
and
heh, most my celeb crushes are for people's voices ;)
Anonymous
That's an interesting comment actually.
Anonymous
13:50
Because I understand what you mean.
Anonymous
It's just kinda' strange how that works...
Anonymous
Sometimes I wish the chat told you who starred your message... thinking
14:09
@JourneymanGeek which gets complicated when all the movies you're seeing are dubbed in French when you're a teenager :P
Anonymous
@M'vy lol.
Anonymous
French accent is nice.
Anonymous
Not strong French.
No I mean, when the actress is American and dubbed in French, cause she actually sounds not at all like the French voice actress XD.
Anonymous
14:14
Oh I see.
Anonymous
Yeah dubbed always sounds strange.
Which is getting quickly disappointing :P
Anonymous
I really like a soft London accent.
I like scottish
@Joshua.J well, some dubbing really change the perception of a character
Anonymous
14:15
@JourneymanGeek Yeah Scottish can be nice.
Anonymous
I like most accents if they're not too thick.
@JourneymanGeek why, thank you kind sir
Anonymous
Just London and French are probably my favourite.
but the most strange thing is that a same dubber can dub several actors, so two completely diferent actor have the same voice
Anonymous
East London accent is awful.
Anonymous
14:16
@Kepotx I've never come across that but I can see it happening, lol.
I like how you make a diference between London and East London accent but refer to "French accent" as they were only one ^^
Anonymous
@Kepotx Well sorta' Paris area.
Anonymous
Is the French accents I've heard and like.
Anonymous
I only made the distinction in London because it's my own country lol and I sorta' know where the differences are.
Anonymous
I don't know enough about France to make the distinction.
14:20
sure, like I would not know the diference between say London and Brighton
Anonymous
Yeah.
however we learn at school the diference between american english and british english
Anonymous
If you've not heard an East London accent.
and I can also recognize some strong accent like scotish
Anonymous
I don't know how to explain it...
Anonymous
14:21
Imagine a typical London accent with all the swearing and slang, that's East London.
Anonymous
@Kepotx You mean like Glasgow?
@Kepotx ahhh - that's a tricky one. The UK has so many accents. Glaswegian is completely different from Edinburgh, and they are totally different from the north east spoken Doric, or the Norn of Orkney etc
Anonymous
^
Anonymous
It's kinda' strange how the UK has so many accents, especially in the North.
well, not sure if i could make the diference between different scotish accent
14:23
@Joshua.J Where I like is 16 miles from Edinburgh and about 30 miles from Glasgow, and it's a different accent again
@Kepotx you would between Glaswegian and an Edinburgh accent. Very different
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop Yeah. I live in Oxfordshire pretty much everyone here has the same accent. But if you went let's say to Stratford Upon Avon which is like 30 minutes in the car maybe a bit more
Anonymous
it's completely different.
well, the only geological area I know in scotland are highlands and lowlands, not sure if i could say "this kind of accent is from this city"
Anonymous
Yeah that's fair though @Kepotx because you don't live here.
yup - @Kepotx we have been invaded by so many communities over the years that we have everything: Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Vikings, Romans, French etc
Anonymous
14:25
I just know that the Paris accent is quite nice :D
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop It's really strange how London has so many different accents despite the close proximity.
Anonymous
I mean there is literally just a river between them yet they sound so different.
maybe because in a capital there are also lot of social class
Anonymous
That is true Kepotx.
Anonymous
South East London is where all the gangsters live, lol.
14:28
I mean, you've got probably more "slang language" in popular area, and more "traditional language" in rich area
Anonymous
The scary part is you think I am joking, but I am not joking when I say gangsters I mean real gangsters.
Anonymous
@Kepotx Yeah that's true.
Anonymous
North London tends to speak more traditional English.
Anonymous
Although saying that if you walk into Hackney it's slang you walk into Pentonville it's not. It's diversity at it's finest.
@Kepotx I used to spent several minutes to track with other actors had the voice I was hearing while watching new films.
Anonymous
14:30
I guess you get that level of diversity in all capitals though.
Also, capital (and big cities in general) have more foreigner than small towns, so that could change a lot in language
not sure if it's the best example as french already have a big influence in english, but there are a lot of french in London, so that could have an influence
Anonymous
Yeah, that is also true.
Anonymous
England has a lot of accents, in general, it's very interesting.
Anonymous
Some countries just don't really have that many others do.
well, every country have
you just need to leave in a country and be fluent to realise it, but it's the same everywhere
Anonymous
14:33
I'd say some countries have a lot less accent diversity.
Anonymous
Maybe language diversity.
Anonymous
I could be wrong but take Denmark for example, I've never really noticed much of a difference in accents between Danish people.
basque country (wich is not really a country, but a region between france and spain) is really small, but there are lot of difference between areas, not only in accent but also in ortograph, verbs...
Anonymous
It's near Bilbao right?
Anonymous
I've been to Bilbao it's really nice there or at least I think it is.
Anonymous
14:42
Wait I am an idiot.
Anonymous
Bilbao is in it.
Anonymous
I had to look at a map, lol.
Anonymous
To be honest I didn't even know what Basque country was.
Anonymous
Especially not when I went to Spain 5 years ago, lol.
@Joshua.J well, Bilbao is in the basque country
Anonymous
14:44
@Kepotx "Bilbao is in it."
Anonymous
Thanks. Yeah I know I just checked on Google maps.
and even if i'm fluent in basque, I can have some struggle to speak with someone from Bilbao
Anonymous
Yeah I didn't even know what Basque was, lol.
Anonymous
Bilbao was nice though. So was Barcelona. Never been to Madrid would love to go though.
even if it's not broad, it interest a lot of linguists, as it's one of the oldest in Europe
it's not even an indo-european langage
Anonymous
14:50
Huh.
Anonymous
That's interesting.
Anonymous
I really need to take some holiday soon, at least a long weekend.
Anonymous
Somewhere close to the UK, Switzerland, Italy, Spain.
@Joshua.J Madrid is quite nice, and not so big so you could walk if you like, some streets are really nice
Anonymous
Yeah it looks really nice @Kepotx
Anonymous
15:00
To illustrate how useless BT are (for anyone who knows places in the UK), BT were meant to send an engineer to Dover.
Anonymous
Instead they sent him to Slough.
17:00
@Joshua.J the worst of all punishments :-)

1 hour later…
Anonymous
18:04
I don't even know how it's possible.
Anonymous
That's 108 miles.
