I am confused...
yeah, me too
what the hell is erik doing here?
Anonymous
Who is Erik? lol.
Anonymous
I am so lost...
@Joshua.J just up there - Erik the Outgolfer
just a very inactive user over here
13:01
<3 Erik <3
Actually - what is an Ingolfer, @EriktheOutgolfer
just kidding
@TomK. uh, I'm a guy?
I'm a steady lurker on PCG
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop I know but, I am just confused lol.
Anonymous
How come Steffen cannot be pinged here? I didn't know that was a feature..
@@131666 I wish I could ping you...
@Joshua.J If you haven't been in a room for a while you don't come up as pingable
but mods have superping abilities :-)
Anonymous
Oh, okay thank you Rory.
Anonymous
I am an idiot.
13:02
@Joshua.J normal people like us can only ping other users for a number of days after they have left a room
something like 3 or 5
Anonymous
@TomK. FeelsBadMan.jpg
11?
Anonymous
Thank you! :D
@RoryAlsop to outgolf is a term over PPCG
no, not 7-11, 7 days :P
Anonymous
13:05
So which one of us is being Steffen a pint?
Anonymous
It can't be me I cannot purchase alcohol, I nominate @TomK. !
@Joshua.J trying to see if I can get him a swag pack to celebrate
Anonymous
@RoryAlsop Haha, good idea. That'd be nice. Looks like Tom is buying him that pint then ;) @TomK.
Anonymous
I think I'll order that hoodie I made tonight, lol. Just so I feel like I've achieved something in my short 71 days on the site :p
the problem is, swag doesn't exist anymore :(
13:06
if you write a function for a challenge in normal code it is ungolfed. if you try to write it in very few bytes, you are golfing the code. and if you need fewer bytes than another contestant you outgolfed him @RoryAlsop
Pints for everyone!
@EriktheOutgolfer ... that isn't absolutely true
how many mod hats do you have? 7?
Anonymous
@TomK. I cannot drink so I'll have a pint of diet coke :)
Rory has a cellar full of swag
Anonymous
^
13:07
and I don't think mod hats are "swag"
SE do provide swag for various things. SE sent me a big box o swag for the B-Sides Glasgow conference other Rory and I hosted in April
So we gave them to all the attendees
And I'm seeing whether I can get some swag to take to DefCon
that's gotta hurt... being called "other Rory"
Anonymous
Best way of getting swag is to go to a talk Rory is at :)
Anonymous
@TomK. Rory0 & Rory1
Anonymous
I wish I could go to DefCon.
13:09
@SteffenUllrich \o/
@TomK. to him I am the other Rory as well
Anonymous
@SteffenUllrich Next step: catch one of The Bears.
probably offends all the other Rories
Thanks for the congratulations. I'm usually not in the chat since this is too much noise for me.
@RoryAlsop well, then that's fitting I guess
Anonymous
13:10
Too much noise? :'(
@SteffenUllrich Well done sir. I popped a wee post up: security.meta.stackexchange.com/q/3017/485
Anonymous
My favourite part of that title @RoryAlsop "(first human member…)"
@Joshua.J 2 bears and a Steffen :-)
are we sure he's a human and not a goomba? :)
Anonymous
Soon we'll find out Steffen is actually a Bear lol.
13:11
@SteffenUllrich I think you may get a note from SE re swag to celebrate :-)
you'll need to give them permission to send stuff to a postal address
Anonymous
Rory if I get 1337 flags, 1337 edits can I have swag? Joke. :p
@TomK. nitpick: needs to be in the same language
Anonymous
Forests rep graph is incredible, lol.
Anonymous
Mine is rocky at best.
@Joshua.J lol if this is too much noise, Steffen would've hated TNB before the stricter Chatiquette was enforced
Anonymous
13:21
Can you phrase that in "I've not been here long speak" ? :P
Anonymous
TNB?
The Nineteenth Byte. BTW it's better now
Anonymous
I see, thank you.
Anonymous
Assume I know nothing and I will tell you otherwise, lol.
13:41
@Joshua.J you never know
Anonymous
Okay I will make it my mission.
Anonymous
Then I will stop with the flags and edits
Anonymous
And stay on 1337 forever lol
@EriktheOutgolfer and this chat was very chatty before a kind of explosion, which reset it somewhat
link please?
13:46
and then Tom came along and revived the chat and we all lived happily ever after
Anonymous
lol @TomK.
@EriktheOutgolfer
Anonymous
You're far too cool for me to deal with @TomK.
I hear that a lot
Anonymous
I hope everyone else was being sarcastic then... ;)
13:49
pretty sure Rory wasn't
Anonymous
Hmm.
yarr - it was a while back now
well, maybe in regard to the explosion..
@SteffenUllrich - apparently you should receive an email from SE, but that will only get to you if you have your email settings to include Community Milestones
Anonymous
Tom I think I was a major factor in lighting this chat back up ;)
Anonymous
13:54
lol.
Anonymous
I am here all the time but I dont have a life so.
14:31
@Joshua.J be less here and answer more questions :P
Anonymous
@TomK. It's hard for me to answer questions, because firstly I have to build up the courage to do it, secondly I have to make sure I am right or I get anxious and never post.
Anonymous
Thirdly, there is only certain questions I feel I can answer and remain correct.
yeah I get that
Anonymous
All in all I need specific questions which I know I 100% know what I am talking about.
Anonymous
Because even if I am 99% sure I still don't want to risk it in fear of being wrong.
Anonymous
14:35
However, I am currently working on an answer which is some in-depth network-security type stuff.
I wouldn't answer questions where I'm 60% sure, but I would definitely answer them if I'm 99% sure
Anonymous
The only thing I get sad about is because the questions I answer are usually quite specific or shall we say about a specific topic, even if I put in a lot of effort I don't tend to get much recognition / votes on it.
Anonymous
Which is fair and I get why, it just makes me sad.
yeah, I know your feeling
Anonymous
Take this one for example - security.stackexchange.com/questions/150733/… it took me quite a while to write that answer, I had to make sure I remembered all the password types Cisco support and what type of hashing they use.
Anonymous
14:37
And it got two votes.
these are my Favorite Tags:

Unfortunately I couldn't write much on the Crypto side because I am not a Bear but I tried to link as many posts as I could for the Crypto side of things so that the OP understood the "Cisco" side and a little on the Crypto side without me having to attempt (and fail) on the Crypto front.
if you write a good answer on a "popular" question tagged with iso27001, you get 4 upvotes
but either you want that or you don't. so there's the "deal with it" spirit again :P
Anonymous
Yeah, I don't tend to answer the "popular" questions that often in fear of being wrong, I just leave them for someone with more knowledge than myself.
Anonymous
Not to mention I am really not that knowledgeable in this field nor do I claim to be, I am mostly here to learn myself it's just if I can answer something, I will.
Anonymous
14:40
Yeah, exactly Tom. I don't mind too much, it's just inevitable when you don't answer the "popular" questions.
Anonymous
I am guessing it was you who just UV'd that, lol. I am almost at 1000 now :d
what?? me?? ;)
no, actually I read that answer a while ago and just forgot to UV it
Anonymous
lol. If I can publish this answer today and get a few upvotes and so some edits I might hit 1000 at the end of the day.
Anonymous
Oh, well thank you either way! :D
Anonymous
I tend to try and answer the Cisco ones as I sit on Cisco kit all day.
Anonymous
14:43
Which means if the OP asks questions I can generally answer them.
16:33
Is there any danger in putting the ID (primary_key) of an ticketing-order database on the physical ticket of the user related to that ID?

4 hours later…

Is there a good dup for the oft-repeated question "I got tons of ssh failures in my logs! Was I hacked??"
