Hey! (Nmap wise) I was wondering if anyone knew if the os detection and the service version detection was only using tcp or if it was also using udp, icmp and other protocols

Isn't it dependant on how "hard" you want to scan and thus configure the command line accordinging @BobEbert since Nmap largely just skims the network instead of active ping. So runs protocol appropriate

@AviD - it's not towel day for a couple of weeks yet...
I sort of wish the Travel.SE towel had Don't Panic written on it in large friendly letters

@RoryAlsop

@RoryAlsop oh I know, its a bit early, but still...

@JourneymanGeek - sure, I could do that...

I have a question that I'd like to ask. It goes along the lines of 'how can I explain that not all hackers are bad'. I was wondering if security.se would accept it?
11:25
hm. Good question. Have to think about that.
My first though would be, no, even if there are many people here who could give an answer.
What is the context of this? Maybe if it's correctly brought, like if you're talking about awareness programs or whatever, it could be somehow on topic?
(though I fear this will remain primarily opinion based, which is not good for the Q&A format)
Maybe people in chat will give you sone insight

If you are trying to explain it, Wikipedia has an article that deals with the different definitions. You might consider reading it to see how they explain it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_%28expert%29
Depending on the audience, it might make sense to elaborate on the historical origins of the word "hack" as originating in the TMRC at MIT where it was used to describe a technical accomplishment.
17:36
yeah, "hacking" traditionally referred to the general process of inventing and making things work
but now it's mostly known as what people do after donning balaclavas so that they can steal folders from your desk

1881 unanswered questions - seems a reasonable palindromic number
Let's answer them all with "pls"

hm, this is interesting. My NAMD computational jobs on our math server have been hanging and dying the moment they're started, taking out the terminal with them.
Did some digging, an apparently, reading from a CUDA-related file in /dev kills everything
it is the basilisk
