@Ohnana I'm almost sure tar -xvf works for everything.
wait for real?
does it have an auto mode?
@Ohnana Yes.
whaaaat
Almost 99% sure of this.
.gz files work automatically, that one I can 100% confirm cus I use that all the time.
Not sure if .bz needs to be specified. IIRC, no.

Q: How do I uncompress a tarball that uses .xz?

Jorge CastroI'm used to extracting tarballs with a -xfz flag, which handles gzip and bzip2 archives. Recently I've run into a .tar.xz file and I would like to uncompress it in one step using tar, how can I do that?

@TerryChia 99% of statistics are made up off someone's head.
@Simon It's not a statistic you idiot.
hemad
wow tar is user-friendly now
never thought i'd see the day
@Ohnana where a big boat would come in my way
14:14
@Ohnana Not really. It's just basic compression / decompression that's easy. There's still a whole host of options no one can remember.
@TerryChia it's a start though
The complexity for the harder stuff is justified though, tar can do a lot of stuff.
It can also do the pls dance.
Is it just me or has @Simon got more annoying lately?
I'm 99% sure that it's just you.
You shouldn't come here during your PMS.
14:18
Right, there goes @Simon on ignore for a month.
@TerryChia obviously you use the -j option for bzip2... duh
Bahahahaha.
@TerryChia Not sure why you're surprised
@TerryChia he did
@lady.donut Get out of here.
14:19
:o
but booob
why are you all so mean?!
@Ohnana THEY'RE ALL MEAN TO ME OHNUHNUH
oh wait i'm an asshole too lol
I'm still not convinced that @lady.donut isn't @Simon's alter ego on a different laptop.
Sigh.
What does it take to prove that it is not?
14:20
@RoraΖ an insult already?
I gotta say that the timing was odd.
It's really an insult to @Simon
@@@
It's the internet, you can't prove anything
14:22
@Simon but le chat works on my phoone!
You must really want to come here because the chat on mobile sucks balls.
@RoraΖ Because -b was taken duh! :P
@Simon well it refreshes on it's own
@Simon Chatsey improves it a lot
@lady.donut it is own?!?
14:23
-.-
rekt
@TerryChia His spelling certainly got worse, but the amount of insults thrown at him also got worse.
My spelling got worse?
Or your use of it anyway.
@Simon I don't know why I comeon here.. Ideal withyou all day long
14:24
@lady.donut #spacebarissues
yup big time
@TerryChia Right! For --blocking-factor whatever the hell that means
Throw that shitty phone away.

YOU WANT A BIG PHONE
14:25

@lady.donut OnePlus is awesome
not with oxygenOS
Well... yeah I kept mine on CM
should have
Untested OS? I think I'll pass on that.
14:26
but Simon won't help me :(
I can probably find the CM image if I stop being lazy.
I'M TIRED OF FLASHING THINGS ON PHONES
@Simon It's pretty straight forward and easy
@Simon oh come on
@lady.donut Why did you want to get the other OS anyway, there were other things that weren't working on CM, right?
Those things will still be broken, y'know.
I haven't had any major issues with CM12
14:31
@Simon hmm wasn't as bad for sure
I like new things :3
Sometimes attaching a picture to a text stalls up
that's why
@lady.donut Great, are you gonna dump me soon too?
but lâ bob!

this like some weird fight club style mental scene right now
SHE EXISTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
BRAD PITT DID NOT EXIST IN FIGHT CLUB
@Simon hey hey .. Spoilers!
@RоryMcCune The movie 153 years old.
It's like if I'd spoil that Frodo ate the ring at the end of LotR.
welp i'm going to go hang out with normal people now. have a great day kiddies
cries
14:40
@TerryChia It used not to. Initially, GNU tar needed the 'z' or 'j'. At one point, the BSD people rewrote their own tar utility, which needed the 'z' but could automatically recognize GZip and BZip2 formats, so there was no 'j'.
15:07
@AviD Surface pro 4 review looks good... anandtech.com/show/9727/…
@RоryMcCune the surface book makes me drool
@JourneymanGeek indeed it does look really nice, also really expensive (even when compared to the Pro4 which ain't cheap...)
Yeah
and less of a point outside the higher end models
16:04
@lady.donut What do you think bunbun is doing?
@ThomasPornin Good to know. I just got it by creating a new File and writing the binaries by use of a hex-editor into a new file.
@Simon stop spoiler!
@SEJPM Then Sam made sweet love to him.
@Simon who's "Sam"!?
o lawd
16:12
@Simon is that a Clerks 2 Reference?
pls roro wtf is Clerks 2
@Simon Are you aware of Kevin smith?
@RоryMcCune this one:
Kevin Patrick Smith (born August 2, 1970) is an American screenwriter, actor, film producer, public speaker and director, as well as a popular comic book writer, author, comedian/raconteur, and podcaster. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob. Smith's first several films were mostly set in his home state of New Jersey, and while not strictly sequential, they frequently feature crossover plot elements, character references, and a shared canon described by fans as the "View Askewniverse", named...
@SEJPM that's the man, maker of movies.
he did Clerks, Dogma, Clerks II (and soon to be Clerks III) amongst others
anyway @Simon 's comment about LoTR reminded me of a scene from Clerks II
He's an eater of food too apparently.
TROLOLOLOLOLO
16:17
@Simon I'm surprised that you've not seen it, it strikes me as likely to be your kind of humour...
@Begueradj "is a Scottish-born British chef and restaurateur"!?
user122738
yes :) If you are envolved in projects management (dev) you may be interested to watch Hell's Kitchen on Youtube (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell's_Kitchen_%28U.S._TV_series%29) @SEJPM
@Begueradj May I ask why?
@Simon probably getting fat :3
user122738
16:22
He has a weird management method but which is efficient @SEJPM
wot, to scream at your employees that they might have been born to a different species?
@Begueradj noted.
user122738
@TildalWave why not? You can apply a smoother version of his method :)
telly emancipation shows rarely work as a management method
if he applied such methods to me he'd end up in a mince pie
user122738
haha :D
16:25
@TildalWave would it be tasty at least?
user122738
:)
I have no idea how Gordon Ramsey tastes like but I'm pretty sure he'd upset your stomach if you ate him
2
user122738
hehe :)
@TildalWave I have two words for you: Chloroform rag.
@TildalWave depends on your cooking skills I guess...
@DavidFreitag not sure if chloroform increases eatability...
16:29
@SEJPM No but it'll stop him from kicking and screaming while you hack him to bits.
user122738
@SEJPM I feel you can be a useful member on cooking.stackexchange.com :D
@DavidFreitag in case your forgot to kill him beforehand?
are you hacking your pigs without killing them?
@SEJPM Actually I had the strangest dream about pigs this morning.
@Begueradj I only know the basics. "Don't eat your own body". "Don't eat poison". "Do not burn yourself".
user122738
:D X :D so funny dud :D
16:33
.
3
epic message as usual @Simon!
16:50
@DavidFreitag chloroform works actually pretty slow, there are other products that do what chloroform is pictured to do, but I forgot the name.
@Arperum maybe someone of us should ask over at Chem.SE?
@Arperum Although I think they'd close it as "too broad"...
@Arperum Dimethylheptylpyran? How could you forget such an easy name to remember?
Dimethylheptylpyran (DMHP, 3-(1,2-dimethylheptyl)-Δ6a,10a-THC, 1,2-dimethylheptyl-Δ3THC, A-40824, EA-1476) is a synthetic analogue of THC, which was invented in 1949 during attempts to elucidate the structure of Δ9-THC, the active component of cannabis. DMHP is a pale yellow, viscous oil which is insoluble in water, but dissolves in alcohol or non-polar solvents. == EffectsEdit == DMHP is similar in structure to THC, differing only in the position of one double bond, and the replacement of the 3-pentyl chain with a 3-(1,2-dimethylheptyl) chain. It produces similar activity to THC, such as sedative...
@TildalWave some serious stuff "DMHP and its O-acetate ester were extensively investigated by the US military chemical weapons program"
gotta love the wording too... extensively investigated LOL
17:49
Here in California we have all the THC we need, no need for DHMP
@Arperum A gun would probably work just as well.

Hi guys, a couple of hours ago I mentioned a new tool I'm working on. I already received some feedback but can I ask you guys what you think of it? It's about analyzing NTFS permissions, it scans the ACL of directories/files and (nested) group memberships from the AD. All info is saved in a database and can be used to query the database by adding filters that include or exclude members, permissions, files, or folders.
See permissionanalyzer.com for more info. If you want to try the tool that would be great, just fill out the contact form on the site and I'll get you a full license for free
Your website is still slow as hell.
Ray

working on it ;)
damm WordPress
You got balls of steel to mention that you're running an instance of WordPress in an Info Sec chat.
@Simon since when are we an InfoSec chat!?
@SEJPM Since roro da noob changed the room topic and tags.
Or was it ovid da pyramidal noob? I don't know.
19:01
@Simon so our mods want the discussion to be mostly on infosec!?
unbelievable.
Naaaah.
I don't think I've ever seen a significant discussion in here actually related to InfoSec.
BTW I've found another Simon who seems to be even more stupid than our @Simon.
pls
@Herringbone_Cat But the real question is: were you taking part of online chats before it was cool?
@Simon who do you want to adress with your "pls"? @Herringbone_Cat or me?
19:07
You decide.
@Simon so both :)
@Simon No, it was always cool, even when I had to use the 9600 baud to dial in to a BBS to go into a chatroom. :)
I must have been four years old for that, though.
Already a nurd at 4? Dayum.
Yeah, I've yet to find anyone who can beat me at a QWERTY typing test. My dad had me typing at 3.
(if anyone wants to compete with me on typeracer.com, let's go!)
@Herringbone_Cat are you holding the top score there?
19:10
@SEJPM No, but I speculate the top scores are all Dvorak typers.
@Herringbone_Cat "dvorak"?
@SEJPM It's an alternative keyboard layout to QWERTY with placement that accelerates most people's typing speed.
Pesky acceleraters.
The Dvorak Simplified Keyboard (/dᵊˈvɔræk/ d-VOR-ak) is a keyboard layout patented in 1936 by Dr. August Dvorak and his brother-in-law, Dr. William Dealey. Over the years several slight variations were designed by the team led by Dvorak or by ANSI. These variations have been collectively or individually also called the Simplified Keyboard or American Simplified Keyboard but they all have come to be commonly known as the Dvorak keyboard or Dvorak layout. Dvorak proponents claim the Dvorak layout uses less finger motion and reduces errors compared to the standard QWERTY keyboard. This reduction in...
@Herringbone_Cat so they're basically cheating?
19:13
@RоryMcCune yeah, I just read a review on zdnet...
@Herringbone_Cat that's an urban legend.
Forget about marijuana, I'm looking forward to Canada's new Prime Minister making science legal again.
@AviD Define "that"? :)
6 mins ago, by Herringbone_Cat
@SEJPM It's an alternative keyboard layout to QWERTY with placement that accelerates most people's typing speed.
@SEJPM no, they've gone and done hard work to get the muscle memory for a better keyboard layout. I have had friends do it, and it causes their QWERTY skills to decline greatly, and I use so many random workstations I can't deal with constantly switching.
well obviously I'm not referring to it being an alternative keyboard layout to QWERTY
or its existence at all, for that matter
@AviD Urban legend!!? I've seen it help many people's typing speed.
19:19
@Herringbone_Cat did you read that wikipedia article you linked?
@AviD Yes, I fail to see any mention of empirical evidence that a WPM increase is an urban legend?
@AviD people never read links they are referring to. They just do it to look smart.
@Herringbone_Cat its rather the other way around, a lack of empirical evidence that dvorak increases wpm, despite its proponents dubious claims.
> Through its history the Dvorak layout and the benefits it claims have come under much scrutiny. Many of the experiments determining its superiority in terms of speed of typing are not experimentally rigorous or are outright biased, with the most famous being conducted by Dvorak and his associates.
> In 1956, a study with a sample of 10 people in each group conducted by Earle Strong of the U.S. General Services Administration found Dvorak no more efficient than QWERTY[34] and claimed it would be too costly to retrain the employees.
@AviD Just based on finger movement, it'll increase WPM at least 4-8%. Anecdotally, all the pople I've seen switch to Dvorak typing around 40-50wpm have made 10+wpm gains on average.
though really, a study of 20 people for this is pathetic.
19:21
@AviD A 1956 study probably doesn't have solid social scientific methodology..and..that paragraph is inconclusive.
So I don't find support for your "urban legend" assertion
@Herringbone_Cat I agree with that.
@Herringbone_Cat the support is in the statement that there is no scientific support for assertions that dvorak is unambiguously better.
@AviD As as QWERTY typist who averages around 140-160WPM, I can tell you that the only people I've met at hackathons, conferences, etc who can compete are Dvorak typers. Certainly anecdotal evidence, but, supported by the evidence about finger movement time from that stackexchange answer.
@Herringbone_Cat wtf! 140-160 wpm is crazy.
19:25
@AviD My dad made me learn at age 3!
thats amazing
@AviD Required me at age 5 to spend an hour on Mavis Beacon before using the BBS or playing PC games.
I got annoyed at my parents for making me learn in grade school. I think it was 7th grade...
@AviD Now I'm using a DAS keyboard. I'm a fan of mechanical keyboards. They have some excellent ones on Massdrop from time to time. :)
@Herringbone_Cat re the anecdotal evidence, there could also be other factors involved. E.g. self-selection, elite applicability, etc.
@Herringbone_Cat tried the CODE keyboard yet?
19:27
@AviD No, haven't tried that one. I did try the crazy funky ergonomic kinesis, and hated it.
my computer classes were word and typing for 5 years
still don't type right but I don't give a goddamn fuuuck
I type great! I Have ECU tendonitis in the right arm and some issue with the thumb/dermatones/pinched nerve int he left!
Motorcyclist/Typist combination is really great if you want RSI
whaaaa D:
@Herringbone_Cat What helps increase typing speed is training. People who are ready to change their keyboard mapping are people who are ready to invest some effort into training.
The actual mapping does not matter much for that.
19:35
@AviD What is he on about forget the pot? We want that too!
@Simon dont forget, the best scientists are working on making a stronger maryjane.
@ThomasPornin yeah, this. Self-selection also plays into that.
@AviD even beterer scientists are already using it :P
@AviD Woohoo@@@
@ThomasPornin Yes, but the mapping does decrease the distance you need to move which allows you to train with less strain. It's like using a TRX instead of doing bodyweight exercises on the floor, if you're into mobility training.
if you guys legalize i might have to vacation in canada
closer than oregon to me
19:37
@TildalWave ooh, I just heard an ad on the radio for a radio show called: Scientists on the Bar.
yes, they are going around radiointerviewing different scientists in different bars.
@Ohnana I wonder if it'd be illegal for non-residents like in NL though.
@Simon awwwww that's no fun. by NL do you mean netherlands?
@Ohnana nl = netherlands
@Ohnana Yes.
@Herringbone_Cat is the "distance" weighted by character occurrence, commonness, relationship with other letrers / probablity of typing a specific sequence, etc?
19:39
It is illegal there for visitors but not enforced.
@Simon whoa seriously? you have to be a resident? how do the tourists get it then?
Unless you screw up.
oh right, selective enforcement
Yup.
Seems very reasonable to me.
@AviD YES, actually, that's the point of Dvorak design.
19:40
@Herringbone_Cat That's the theory. IF a Dvorak-specific speed improvement can ever be measured, THEN we have a nice explanation for it. However, that improvement has not actually been observed.
@AviD space cafes are now popular... basically you'd invite someone known in the industry to your bar and then distribute flyers so geeks know where to get wasted that eve
nearly all bars have a projector anyway, at least here
@ThomasPornin That improvement has been observed. atri.misericordia.edu/Papers/Dvorak.php
In fact, there was one study that concluded to an improvement, but it was conducted by Dvorak himself, who had also patented his keyboard and thus had a vested interest in the study finding that his layout improved things.
@ThomasPornin The wikipedia article that references that study is poorly written. A proper literature review can be found (albeit dated mid-90s) in that above link.
@ThomasPornin that study was thoroughly debunked at the time, was it not?
19:42
Of course if I make something, I will write a paper that states how better my design is.
@Simon you should design a better donut.
@AviD Simply stating the conflict of interest was enough to damn it (it was in the US after all).
@AviD WOW I HOPE YOU'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT @lady.donut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ThomasPornin sure, but the actual result and the methodology itself - I thought Dvorak admitted that it was bunk shortly after?
@AviD the munchkins
19:43
we should get Adam Ruins to ruin dvorak
@AviD Mmh, yes, I think there was something like that too.
20:05
If anyone is interested: Here's an infosec reading.
reading of what?
like a poetry reading, but infosec?
pls, I liked it the other way. Was about to ping @RоryMcCune and @TerryChia, now I just look foolish.
that epic discussion :D
@AviD you may want to fix this.
@SEJPM nah, it's better when it slightly confuses people.
like @Simon's genitals.
@AviD don't get us back on the sex topic. Remember your starred post from 2d ago...
heh, that is not really on the same topic... but you're not wrong.
20:16
If we get back on the sex topic, we might want some representatives of a non-male gender to join the chat room first.
@Herringbone_Cat so who do we have of them who at least sometimes visits the DMZ?
@SEJPM AFAIK, None. :)
@Herringbone_Cat does @Simon count?
@AviD Unfortunately not.
@AviD so what gender does he have if it's non-male?
20:19
hmm. okay, so lets stay of the topic then.
Yeah, let's talk about feminism and why there's such a gender disparity on online computer science/STEM related forums like this one!
2
@Herringbone_Cat dammit, that means that @Simon's genitals are probably involved again.
@AviD I can vouch for his genitals
we'd really rather you not.
XD that's too bad
20:35
I am sure it is, but we dont need to hear about it ;-)
21:08
pls all leave my genitals alone when I'm not even here
@Simon but it's more fun with your genitals?
@Herringbone_Cat I've always had a lot of respect for flying ponies.
@SEJPM :OOOOO
21:30
I'll get some sleep. Good night everyone :)
