Q: How to prevent sharing my Internet by Bluetooth tethering?

EyadIf my neighbor - who I have allowed to connect to my router - is sharing my internet by Bluetooth tethering, is there a way to prevent anyone from sharing my internet this way without cut him off?

Evenin'
Only popped in briefly before the gym - and now I have a big grin from this evening's transcript. Good work, you Sec.SE lot
@RoryAlsop byes
@Simon what's the prereq for sex.se?
Being a human being.
@Simon I need an invite ?
No.
18:15
Says set for private
@JukEboX it's in private beta which means only people who were involved in the proposal can participate
once it hits public beta it'll be opened up AFAIK
My donut made an account without an invite.
@Simon oh. :/
@raz great answer on the Android app question. Going hard for that Rep:P

A: How to prevent sharing my Internet by Bluetooth tethering?

JukEboXBluetooth does not create a strong internet signal so anyone connecting to it would have to pair to his device that is tethered. And they would have to be in a 60 foot radius of that device in most cases. I don't think there is anything on your home consumer based router that will allow you to bl...

wat
what do you mean by filtering?
ain't gonna do much to stop the tethering
I take it you music lovin' Nurdz saw this
18:22
old
@Simon yeah I know it's like 32 days back
In Internet time, a month is about 70 years.
@etherealflux took that part out
I read it a different way
@Simon the internet runs on beats not years
raz
raz
@JukEboX I just give as complete answers as I can. Lots of my answers only get +1 with the same amount of effort.
18:31
@JukEboX Apparently so.
raz
raz
@JukEboX But thanks!
@DavidFreitag yay!
@raz way better than anything I have written outside of parenting.se
@JukEboX Ah, gotcha
raz
raz
To any server admins out there, is there such a thing as "Firewall timing rules". Where if a certain connection isn't established in a set period of time it'll get dropped?
@etherealflux I thought he wanted to connect the Bluetooth device to the router with Bluetooth enabled.
@raz yes I believe their is.
raz
raz
18:33
@JukEboX You'll get there
@JukEboX Have any links?
@raz basic windows firewall rules or third party?
raz
raz
Any OS/device
@RoryAlsop musixmatch.com/artist/MetalTech might be of interest, you could add lyrics :) I found it as it's integrated with the Spotify client now...
@raz I know you could with Sygate. Let me see what else I can find
@raz pretty much every enterprise router, or iptables, lets you set packet timeouts. Default is typically 30 seconds.
18:36
@raz here is one for Cisco PIX supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/10415841/…
raz
raz
@Herringbone_Cat Yeah I guess packet timeouts are more what I'm looking for.
@JukEboX Does anyone still run a cisco PIX? :)
@Herringbone_Cat My last job did
@Herringbone_Cat ASAs are pretty common in a lot of co's I've seen
@Herringbone_Cat your in here? Awesome. Thanks for help with the Bluetooth question. I read the question wrong :/
raz
raz
18:37
@Herringbone_Cat No one updates their routers
@raz unless you want to use something like a packet shaper
Just drop all connections and send back a Christmas tree packet
raz
raz
You'll still see Cisco routers running iOS 12 out there. Old hardware in old networks.
@RoryMcCune: Yes, ASAs but not PIXes. I have an ASA5505 in my living room somewhere in a box :)
raz
raz
@JukEboX No, I'm looking for default type settings, between @Herringbone_Cat and you I think I have what I need.
18:39
@JukEboX No problem. Sometimes it's hard to decipher technical questions people pose
raz
raz
Thanks guys!
@etherealflux Merry Packetmas
@Herringbone_Cat I am not a InfoSec PRO yet so still learning :/
@Herringbone_Cat ah sure as the linked article in the thread was about ASAs I assumed you were using the term interchangeably
@JukEboX Fake it until you make it
@Herringbone_Cat Sure you do, nurd.
18:40
@raz I know Sygate had a very simple firewall adjustment interface for that. But after Symantec bought them they changed it around ALOT. I miss the old sygate :/
@Herringbone_Cat been trying. My rep proves it :P
@JukEboX What? Symantec ruining software? Nooo, not them..
n e v e r
@raz you can still find Sygate here : download.cnet.com/Sygate-Personal-Firewall/…
lolcnet
I may go home and download it again simply because when you were using it, you knew Everything that was going on. It was the best firewall
@DavidFreitag yeah I know. NORTAN is almost as bad as MCAFEE
18:43
@JukEboX I wouldn't touch a binary from Cnet with a 10 foot ethernet cable.
@etherealflux MCASSFee
@DavidFreitag softpedia?
@JukEboX McAfee was purchased by Intel.
@DavidFreitag their software still sucks to me
raz
raz
@DavidFreitag Breaking news?
18:44
@RorymcCune ah, no, I just merely read the comment in line without bothering to click TFA :)
Today is a very special day
@raz I is now "intel security group "
Swanky
@Kisunminttu Oh?
makes swanky face
Whats up @Kisunminttu
18:44
@Simon the sad part is I've been meaning to configure it as my home router and do an L2L vpn to my office but have been too lazy, thus, it sits in a box.
@DavidFreitag Just because Intel bought it doesn't make it any less crap
raz
raz
@JukEboX Googling "Swanky face" comes up with some interesting results
@Herringbone_Cat A box is its natural habitat. I bet it is as happy as a clam.
@DavidFreitag Intel makes a hexa core processor but still gets out performed by their quad cores
LOL @raz
@JukEboX Which hex core? They have made several...
18:46
@DavidFreitag any of them
That's just not true.
Was last time I checked benchmarks a month ago
Along with user reviews
Unless if by "out performed" you mean "used less power"
Users are dumb.
18:47
@Herringbone_Cat have you flashed it with DD-WRT?
@JukEboX There's compelling reasons to go with a hex-core rather than a quad core, #1: Virtualization. Each CPU core is 2 threads thanks to hyperthreading, thus, you get more vCPUs.
Around this time of the evening two years ago I met a very special person and immediately struck up an interesting conversation with him
Also, with the hex core you get quad channel ram.
@JukEboX MY nice ASA5505 flashed with DD-WRT?! Blasphemy!
I thought for the longest time that his name was Adam!
3
18:48
That's right, 128GB of ram.
Maybe if I had an old Linksys, but an ASA5505 is hardware born to run IOS and only IOS
@Kisunminttu I'm going to have to call him that from now on...
@Kisunminttu LOL
(well, a few hours until I went out of my way to find him on social media)
@Herringbone_Cat I thought you meant CONSUMER home router. I didn't know you were using a corporate level router at home :P
18:49
That was the best birthday I've ever had
I don't think I've ever had a best birthday
@DavidFreitag when intel revamps the software and make it actually catch, remove, and sense things correctly I will change my tune for McAfee
@Adi :*
So, we have roro, dovid, oszi, ovid, roz and Adam.
Lovely.
@Kisunminttu \o/
18:50
Also cotmont
@JukEboX It's more like 'small office' level, but yes, courtesy of "recycling" for a client when they upgraded to an ASA5515-x
@Herringbone_Cat that is what most of my stuff is :P Network level laser printer...... with free backup cartridges... Check
@Kisunminttu what do you think my name is :P
@Kisunminttu "cotmont" is that a finnish thing?
(or of course a young person thing that I wouldn't get...)
Probably the latter.
@raz thanks for the edits :) Me no Engrish well
18:52
@RоryMcCune I'm not brave enough to google that at work
@Simon you're saying probably, 'cause you're a bit old to know now too, eh?
I practically have a foot in a coffin.
2
@Herringbone_Cat I am rocking the D-Link DGL5500 :P
@Simon That's becaus you're a vampire.
Yeah, I love sucking on dem blood.
18:56
@Simon you can still save yourself... Just say the word and we'll throw a lifesaver donut
We have a word? Is it the safe one?
@Kisunminttu hey hey less of the donut-talk and more of the explaining the mysterious term
@Simon Pineapples!
Yes, @Simon
Ok then.
donutpls
18:57
The safe word is "doughnut"
@JukEboX Believe it or not I used an apple time capsule as a router for about 7 years. It's actually a good router. Does IPv6 tunneling well.
Go on, @Simon. Practice.
donut
Doughnut.
donut
18:58
@Herringbone_Cat LOL my friend and I built an old HP Tower from like 97 and made that a router. Was great for network gaming until someone treid to DL something HUGE and had to restart it cause the 900mhz processor crashed :P
Aaaand @Simon is dead
RIP @Simon
is le ded-
@RоryMcCune Google "woll smoth"
@Herringbone_Cat that sounds like something you should put on an obscure technology page. Its so strange others will want to do it with their time capsules :P
@Simon X_X
18:59
@Kisunminttu oh well that image search is the stuff of nightmares...
RIP in pieces @Simon
@JukEboX Not really, I mean, it's a big heading item under the network configuration. The issue is finding ISPs that support tunneling. I'm lucky to have sonic.net, probably the best consumer ISP in america, out here.
@Kisunminttu ahahahahah
@RоryMcCune kosonmonttu
@Herringbone_Cat Comcast :/
19:00
@RоryMcCune Do I even want to know?
@DavidFreitag no.. I'll say no
@JukEboX Comcast natively supports IPv6 on their modems, despite being the worst ISP in america :)
@RоryMcCune you do you do!
It'shhilarious! Come on, guys
@JukEboX I do now, that does not mean I want to!
19:01
@Herringbone_Cat I have never had a problem with them. Actually they tired to sell me on their wireless model and I was like I JUST WANT THE Surboard. I don't need your wack as box. I got something better
@Kisunminttu did you do "and fronds"?
@JukEboX Just wait until you want to cancel your account. :)
@Herringbone_Cat I have done that twice. Never gave me a problem
Since I cancelled two years ago, I think I've received direct mail spam from them every other day.
That's what you get for opting out of their phone call solicitations.
@JukEboX nope! What's that?
I actually wanted to buy my own modem with triple speed I wanted to see if I could get that activated and bounce them out of the hardware game completely. Just needed to get some PCs with TV cards and I would be set :P
19:02
@Herringbone_Cat I have yet to have any issues with them. They even sent me a $100 visa card as an apology for messing up my auto pay.
@Kisunminttu Google "woll smoth and fronds"
@DavidFreitag I've found that their "best effort" uptime in some areas means entire business days with no service.
@JukEboX That is a very very good idea. I get 180mb/s out of my modem.
@JukEboX They are not throttling you on your modem, they throttle you upstream, so "triple speed" won't work.
@DavidFreitag it works well if you can get a HD card. Then you got free DVR and you don't have to pay for it.
19:03
@Herringbone_Cat I have not had that issue. The worst I see is a sag below my rated 150mb/s during peak hours.
@Herringbone_Cat yeah I Know. I was able to do it with cablevision
@DavidFreitag Have you opted out of them using your DNS queries for advertisement?
FYI, this is the modem I have.
@Herringbone_Cat I use a VPN
I tried to do that with them with my home DVR whenI build a computer for that but they still use those DUMBASS credit card readers to read the box authentication for you.
@DavidFreitag That works, but when your VPN isn't on.... in general, I simply trust Comcast/NBC to monetize anything they can as unethically as possible
19:05
So what you have in the end is your house just gets internet and cable service but no actual hardware provided by comcast
@Herringbone_Cat My VPN turns on automatically when windows starts, and I get an alert if it disconnects.
@DavidFreitag I haven't really thought about using a VPN. Who do you use? I wasn't sure of the cost either
@DavidFreitag You can also change your DNS servers to non-comcast ones too to resolve that :) But full tunnel VPN for everything?
I can see using a split tunnel, but a full tunnel VPN kinda defeats the point of a fast internet connection in some ways
@Herringbone_Cat DNS change to google is no better :P
@JukEboX I use Private Internet Access. My download speeds are actually higher with the VPN enabled, and it's only like $7/mo
@Herringbone_Cat I use Google DNS servers, but yes full VPN tunnel
19:06
@DavidFreitag per machine or can I VPN to it direct from my router?
@DavidFreitag Download speeds being higher is definitely odd for a VPN, but, I suppose they're messing with the TCP/ip windowing or doing some caching or something.
@JukEboX Per machine, they even have an android application to enable the VPN on android devices. Not so sure for iOS/Windows phone
@DavidFreitag I have to many devices. Hmmmm
@Herringbone_Cat Presumably they are doing some SPI on the traffic to detect torrents/tor, so there's that.
Looking at like 7 computers 3 phones etc
19:08
@JukEboX I have four devices that run at the same time, it's not one device per license
@DavidFreitag You mean deep packet inspection, SPI would have a hard time with Tor.
@DavidFreitag wait so you pay for on license for all your devices?
@Herringbone_Cat Yes you know what I meant :P
@Herringbone_Cat Tor has bad speed though no?
@JukEboX One license many devices
19:09
@JukEboX Yes, anything making your internet connection into a rube goldberg machine will likely be slow
@DavidFreitag TO THE INTERNETS!
@Herringbone_Cat LOL OMG I just LOLED so hard
@JukEboX Just be warned their site is kinda shit
@DavidFreitag I can't get to it from work so I will have to go to their shitty site with my nice new computer at home/.
WOw @Kisunminttu really killed @Simon . What will we tell @simon's.donut ?
@DavidFreitag your on Comcast too or AT&T?
@JukEboX Comcast
@DavidFreitag yeah figures. I didn't know how deep they rolled out there. Was crossing my fingers you didn't say TWC or Cox
@DavidFreitag running Win 10 with auto VPN running?
I haven't run that option yet so I nterested to hear how it works?
19:12
@JukEboX I run 7, but I'm sure it's compatible with 10.
And this is my router:
that thing can definitely do a site-to-site tunnel
I get the same speed on gigabit ethernet as I do on 5GHz wireless
@DavidFreitag Sounds like your gigabit cables are hurting.
@Herringbone_Cat Nope, I have 150mb/s to the wall, and I can peak at 180mb/s at like 4am
19:14
Disabled WPS because it is a MAJOR security risk
@JukEboX I have had bad luck with D-Link. that buffalo comes stock with DD-WRT
@DavidFreitag Ah yes, gigabit is mostly useful for LAN connectivity, like file servers. If your total upstream bandwidth is <200mbps, then wireless AC vs wired difference will be trivial.
Lol, WPS came disabled by default on my router.
@DavidFreitag But here at my office, we have these huge ubiquiti AC enterprise access points and gigabit. People love plugging into the gigabit, when downloading a 4GB ISO it makes a huge difference.
@Herringbone_Cat Sure, but for youtube or netflix there is no appreciable difference.
19:16
@DavidFreitag not a bad price either
@DavidFreitag Definitely not. For casual users, nothing..unless they're gamers, in which case latency will always be lower wired.
@JukEboX I got mine on sale for $60 :]
@DavidFreitag I got mine when it first came out. Plugged it in and the world exploded.
@Herringbone_Cat Anything that matters is wired, and my nas has 3 gigabit nics.
@DavidFreitag I have a buffalo Terastation with only 1 GiG connect
@Herringbone_Cat that was also a enterprise level recycle project ;P
19:18
Mine is fully custom with 10TB of caviar red and a 64GB SSD cache drive
@DavidFreitag I always wondered they come with so many NICs. You can do NIC teaming sure..but then..you probably have a gigabit switch, so that's not going to help. YOu can do multiple VLAns, but you can just 802.1Q tag a single one. How many home environments have multiple switches you need redundancy on? :)
@DavidFreitag yeah I want to up it to something bigger. I would like the WD greens
@JukEboX Those WD greens love failing. I've started to use HGST for lower failure rates.
@Herringbone_Cat It has a single gig on the motherboard and a pci express card with two more. Link aggregation is all about 'dat bandwidths.
@Herringbone_Cat have had mine for almost 5 years now. Never failed. Seagate on the other hand..... dont' get me started
19:19
@Herringbone_Cat WD Greens are fine, you just need to disable power save mode otherwise they park themselves to death.
@DavidFreitag Yea
@DavidFreitag I've got a pile of them right here for you, in a box, thrown in after they've failed.
@Herringbone_Cat I'll gladly take them, I could make a ring launcher.
I'd never use a green as my main drive, but for a backup drive they work perfectly. As long as you disable the"IntelliPower" BS
19:22
@Herringbone_Cat you have to sh**ting me
@DavidFreitag my OS drive an SSD
backups are all WD
@JukEboX Hey man, I offered him a saving doughnut. He's the one who refused to grab onto it
Every Seacgate I have had and everyone I know who has had them they have crashed. EVERY ONE
Especially the barricuda
@JukEboX I mean a main data drive. I have a 120GB SSD and a 2TB Black caviar.
@DavidFreitag depends on the data. I have different drives for different data
@Kisunminttu well we call can't be saved. someone must be the martyr :P
@Simon just made us all look bad by being the martyr
Wait, so what happened to @Simon???
19:24
Nothing.
He went out for a donut
A jelly one I bet.
mmmmm
I am going to have to go up to the snack machine
aka a WHITE POWDER EVERYWHERE snack
@DavidFreitag I have been hearing good things on the Samsung SSDs so I got one for my OS
19:25
I know I'm American and I should like donuts but I prefer cigarettes.
Nothing says -merica like a good 'ol virginia-grown cigarette.
@JukEboX EVO 850s are pretty much the best on the market behind M.2 drives.
@DavidFreitag I thought the EVO was slower than the PRO?
But yes those 850s are excellent drives, we're using plenty over here.
@Herringbone_Cat Or, you know, Abraham Lincoln riding on the back of a bald eagle with a cheese burger in one hand and a rifle in the other hand.
@Herringbone_Cat Marginally. The benefit of the pro is the 10 year warranty with full data recovery service.
19:27
@DavidFreitag That's more a george washington style.
dovid, ever dealt with a Philips #00 stripped screw?
@Simon Drill it out.
#00
HASHTAG ZERO ZERO
19:28
Yeah, get a real fine drill bit. :)
Or you can use a dremel and cut a slot in it for a flat head
@DavidFreitag I got the 850 PRO
Chicago Latrobe drill bits FTW
It's in a Macbook Pro, I don't really wanna drill in there.
@DavidFreitag Yup, I'm fairly sure that's what I'll have to do.
Outside of that your only option is a screw extractor.
19:30
#2big
The smallest size should be enough to remove a 00
It really looks way too big.
Yes, yes, TWSS.
@Simon I am pretty sure the fact that you stripped the screw will tell them you voided the warranty :P
It will be a bit like trying to probe an IC with a hotdog, but you can do it.
I CAN DO IT
19:31
Just remember to remove the battery before you start cutting/drilling/screwing
@DavidFreitag hahah
#ucandoeet
@DavidFreitag Remove the battery from a macbook pro? :)
Yeah, totally not attempting to do that.
@Herringbone_Cat You can unplug the connector.
Psk, that's for pussies.
19:32
@Herringbone_Cat you mean it's not easy :P
I'd rather fry the board than being a pussy.
#manstatus
Just be warned, if you accidentally puncture the battery you should be prepared for a very intense and nearly inextinguishable fire right in your face.
Now that's an issue because my face is quite pretty.
@DavidFreitag Do you really want to tell him this or do you want to see pictures from when this happens?
19:33
The screw is on the opposite of the battery, I should be fine.
@Herringbone_Cat count my vote for after picture
That's the sort of mentality that leads to severe chemical burns on your face.
Alkali metals are not to be toyed with. Unless you have a very long sharp pointy stick.
Or a vat of acid behind a strong screen
Troo.
@RoryAlsop At least an acid you can dilute with water. If you tried to wash off any lithium off with water it would only serve to intensify the reaction.
19:36
@DavidFreitag Yeah but that thing is almost 60 bucks on amazon.ca
I'd rather spend more and get a Dremel.
Which will be handy for a bunch of stuff, including my car.
@Simon It is not my fault your country's currency is worth less.
pls
@Simon
Also, @Simon, now that I am looking, 40k CAD is only slightly more than I make a year, so I feel less pathetic.
And what percentage is taxable?
19:51
Boo someone downvoted one of my answers.
20:03
rekt
@DavidFreitag does Private Internet Access require software installed on computer?
@JukEboX Anything called 'private internet access' using software shouldn't be trusted :) VPNs are a standard thing, e.g. IPSec, that should be usable from a variety of clients.
Unless your name is Cisco. In which case, everyone will use your proprietary client and apple will even bake in support for your bastardizations of ipsec
@Herringbone_Cat yeah I know that is why I am asking. I have been stuck to Cisco VPN before. I haven't used outside VPN before
Oh
And also Aruba VIA
That is also required software
rolls eyes
@JukEboX Never heard of aruba VIA, in 2010 i worked at the hedge fund that bankrolled them, they had aruba access points (which were great) but used ASA5510s.
Yeah Aruba VIA is Aruba Virtual Intranet Access
Aruba is a great device. Their off network APs us internal VPN to stay connected to the home network if you work from home. Fully configurable from home network. its pretty cool
20:11
Yeah, they're great, but expensive. Got to pay back those investors somehow.
@Herringbone_Cat yeah I know. I helped install a whole campus full of them for my last job.
So those investors can spend copious amounts of $$ decorating their hedge fund office with gawdy, avant-garde art from the SF MoMA
Just had to vent for a second there about that hedge fund. :)
Yeah I dont' think I could last at a hedgefund
Have you heard from the Bridgewater Headfund?
Hedgefund?
yeah, I didn't consult at that one though.
@Herringbone_Cat I applied to that one and everyone there is COMPLETELY NUTS!
20:13
That's every hedge fund. It's basically a cult of the portfolio manager.
The owner wrote a book on how to succeed by telling people what you really thought of them
@Herringbone_Cat here is what it is really like -->
@JukEboX Isn't even close to the shit I've seen.
How about a hedge fund that everyone has to wear certain colors depending on the day, so the portfolio manage rcan hang upside down with his feet on the ceiling, in a mood-lit room matching the color people wear, to pick stocks?
Greed man. It's all greed.
I'm still grateful for the money clip I received on Chrsitmas from Paul Singer, though. Lately I hear he's been suing Argentina.
20:29
@Herringbone_Cat no idea who that is
I never liked Ubuntu. Devs seem to favor it, but I greatly prefer CentOS for a server. Desktop, Mint seems nicer.
@JukEboX Yes.
@DavidFreitag they do have software. That has to be on all machines?
20:38
Yep
@DavidFreitag thanks.
Silly Symantec. Viruses ar so boring now. Nothing is over 4 anymore :/
Hi @schroeder
@Herringbone_Cat have you tried any of the PowerLine systems?
@JukEboX I'm personally not a fan of powerline ethernet, but I've never had a real use case for it. Either run ethernet, or use WiFi tends to be my MO.
I bought one for my old house which eventually went to my parents and it works great
Great for when you can't run Ethernet and wifi won't reach
I used it to put Wifi across my ouse
@JukEboX In those situations I just end up buying the 3-pack of Ubiquiti WAPs and using those to relay. I have never had my own house though (lived in major cities), so I don't trust powerline privacy/electrical wiring in those buildings.
20:50
@Herringbone_Cat yeah it was a stand alone house so the worry about tapping in was at 0%
@Schroeder what sup?
@JukEboX not much - you?
@Schroeder trying to kill some time till the clock reaches 5:30 so I can go home
@Schroeder what movie is that picture from?
@JukEboX I have a better idea: pick a tag on this site at random hat does not have an entry, do some research, and propose an edit with content that's relevant to our site (do not copy-paste from Wikipedia)
@JukEboX I was wondering too, so I asked Google
This is why we elected schroeder moderator. :)
I really want to know what movie it is from. I want to watch it
image is from Frozen
OH RIGHT!
Frozen is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy–comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 53rd animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen, the film tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey alongside a rugged iceman, his loyal pet reindeer, and a naïve snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped the kingdom in eternal winter. Frozen underwent several story treatments for years...
hate that film
20:59
@Schroeder what do you mean a tag with no entry?
